7:00 PM
@Unionhawk that looks like it removes trailing backslashes, possibly as some kind of win32 path normalization?

@ToxicFrog You're probably right, considering how little I follow the genre. I was just stating that I enjoyed it

Guys, I just found out I can buy food with bitcoin here

@Yuuki What is the functional difference?
I don't use that language ever but I'm interested to know.

If param is false then it goes to default

Wait, no I'm not misunderstanding, it also would have accepted '\\' as the param

7:01 PM
@KevinvanderVelden Oh right.

@StrixVaria The first one will assign default to foo if param is false-y. The second one will assign default to foo is param is null or undefined.
The most noticeable difference is if param is 0.

@ToxicFrog Yes, I'm more interested in the use of a char[] instead of a char here

@John so did I, but I also think that's about my fill of the genre for the next decade

since, sanity check passed, it's perfectly happy with .TrimEnd('\\')

@ToxicFrog Same, for no small part because I was terrible at it :D

7:03 PM
@Unionhawk Oh, you're right. I think I'm thinking of something else

(behind the scenes it's probably exactly the same, but)

When working with numbers, please consider whether or not 0 is a valid value.

There's somewhere where this is done in a really dumb way
But I am too lazy to remember

@Unionhawk that's interesting, because the docs say it only likes arrays: msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/…

I am growing way too fond of Ruby.

7:03 PM
If not, then the first expression is perfectly fine. If so, please do not do the thing.

@ToxicFrog params is varargs

@StrixVaria I'm sorry, I hear there are surgical options available for that though

@TimStone aaaaah

@KevinvanderVelden I had been coding like 90% or more Java for 4 years before switching to a job using Ruby.
So it was a system shock at first. They're so different.

Oooh that explains it

7:05 PM
Ok, my next guess is that C# lets you pass an array to functions where varargs are permitted, basically having builtin apply

One is lasagna the other is ruby

Now I've been doing this for 4 years and this is what's comfortable.

@ToxicFrog it does

NEat

I hate the implication that, if I potentially had to use PHP for 4 years, I might grow to like it.
8

7:05 PM
cc @Wipqozn

You might also have become @Wipqozn

Yeah, which is why it lets you do this, but it looks odd just allocating a char[1] inline

@StrixVaria don't worry. I don't think you're as terrible as @Wipqozn

when you could like, not do that

The important part is that you eat the allocation cost either way
mmm allocations

7:06 PM
I like that when faced with someone possibly liking PHP, we all cc @Wipqozn.

@TimStone I mean yeah
It just looks weird

@StrixVaria I had to work with PHP for a couple of years, and in that time I grew to hate it

@murgatroid99 As it should be.

Yeah I can't really think of any PHP convenience that isn't implemented in a less horrible way in some other language
Maybe it's unique as a package deal but not worth it IMO

@TimStone i mean sometimes i just want things to really break in a bizarre way where error logs are entirely unhelpful

7:09 PM
PHP is what happens when you aren't good at programming but you slap a bunch of programming related stuff together anyway and it ends up Turing complete
7

@TimStone It's convenient for creating hatred and frustration with an efficiency that no other language can match.

@murgatroid99 It's not even snark since this is basically what happened

@TimStone Exactly. That's the actual history of PHP development

@GodEmperorDune yeah but we have malbolge for that

@StrixVaria Speaking as someone who has used PHP for years I can tell you that you don't need to worry about that
The more you work with PHP the more you grow to hate it
Especially if you use it alongside another language, like how I use Python and PHP at my work
Because then when you do something in PHP compared to Python it's just "whhhhy PHP whyyy, why are you soooo bad"
"why would anything ever work that way"
@TimStone Quite literally the only thing that makes PHP worthwhile is just how easy it is to integrate into web development or to spin up basic website with PHP. But, like, it's not worth it. Not if it's something you'll be responsible for afterwards.
Because spinning up basic shit in PHP is pretty easy and quick, but the less basic a thing becomes the more of a problem PHP becomes

7:16 PM
casts about for a next book

@ToxicFrog Robin Hobb
cc @StrixVaria

@ToxicFrog php the good stuff. it's a quick read because it's blank.

@Wipqozn been there, did not enjoy the visit

@ToxicFrog City of Stairs?
I can't remember if we talked about that series already.

7:18 PM
Wondering if I want a nonfiction (in which case probably SPQR by Mary Beard), the Steerswoman books by Rosemary Kirstein, or perhaps finally check out Gene Wolfe
Or perhaps go more SF, since I've been reading a bunch of fantasy recently, with Code of Conduct by Kristine Smith, or Embedded by Dan Abnett

@StrixVaria Another excellent choice

Or Children of Time for maximum spider aliens.

user15026
@ToxicFrog If you read SPQR, let me know how it is

@StrixVaria I don't think we have, and that looks very much my jam

user15026
Right now I am reading Scott Kelly's book, Endurance which is about his life and his adventures in space and such. It's pretty good

7:20 PM
@ToxicFrog I recommended it to @Wipqozn and he finished the whole series in like a week.
It is complete, also. No waiting for books to be published.

@StrixVaria Yup I couldn't put it down

@Ash will do. I just finished another nonfiction (The Zen of Graphics Programming) but that's something I'd been working on on and off for a while

I think every spare minute I had went to reading it

@StrixVaria good to know, I try to avoid unfinished series these days
@(exceptions Cherryh, McGuire, Brust)

@ToxicFrog GRRM and Patrick Kingkiller chronicles makes me hesitant to pick up incomplete series too

Waiting always sucks, but waits without end are the worst.

Maybe I will read Embedded or Code of Conduct because I am in the mood for some SF, then SPQR, then City of Nouns

thankfully there are always more books

@Wipqozn that and by the time the whole thing is done I've forgotten everything and need to reread the whole series from the start anyways

user15026
@Wipqozn This is a blessing and a curse - I will never read all the things

7:23 PM
Also fffffffff Last Dragon Standing comes out in like a week
adds that to the burgeoning queue

user15026
Oh man I somehow missed a October Daye book at some point...

I thought I was running low on stuff to read but I just checked out my queue and I'm good for a few years.

user15026
Oh, holy crap, Tricks for Free comes out in 12 days. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS

i have not been here in forever

And I have 7 more Realm of the Elderlings books before I can even get started in earnest on the rest of the queue.

7:25 PM
is GnomeSlice here

user15026
@ToxicFrog Is Brightest Fell in Library or do I need to find it

@nine Not this moment but he still hangs out here.
Oh you're texenox, ok.

@Ash Tricks for Free WHAT HOLY CRAP
flails

yes but i'd rather not be called that

Why is everything coming out at once

user15026
7:26 PM
@ToxicFrog According to GR, it comes out on March 6th

i havent gone by that name for several months

@StrixVaria oooooh

user15026
@ToxicFrog Because the world is terrible and wants to drown us in books

At least the Murderbot series won't be done until later this year

@nine That's fine, I'm not going to change your name.

7:27 PM
@StrixVaria ngl i wouldn't mind getting my name changed as long as it was actually 2 characters

We have a particular troll who changes names a lot (not you), so I'm really paranoid about new names is all.

"troll"

@Ash and no I don't have anything past Once Broken Faith

user15026
@ToxicFrog Alright, I will hunt it up then

user15026
@ToxicFrog I thought those extended to 2019, but happily that looks to not be the case :D

user15026
7:29 PM
And it looks to be 4 books now? I thought it was three. Yay more Murderbot than expected

@ToxicFrog Murderbot? I don't want @Ash to get that upgrade, hugbots are way better

@Ash Don't be modest, we both know you eventually will

user15026
@KevinvanderVelden why not both/

Murderhugs.

@KevinvanderVelden The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells
Also you can totally have both the murderbot and hugbot modules installed at once, c.f. documentary Big Hero Six

user15026
7:30 PM
Yeah, so we're fine, everything fine, there can be hugs and murder

I posted this earlier today but it was in the middle of the night so I don't know if anyone actually saw it or paid attention.

@Yuuki I figured this was about sword art online until I followed the trail

user15026
@Yuuki Oh, that's why my Chrome tab had this open when I woke up.

@Ash It's a pretty amazing sight.

user15026
It's neat, for sure. I was just like "where did I get this from" when I woke up this morning, and this answers that!

7:32 PM
@ToxicFrog Oh, Gene Wolfe is the next thing I plan to give a try once I finish Realm of the Elderlings.
I've heard it's pretty dense writing and I don't want to get wrapped up in two of those at once.

Apparently if you don't have any startup projects set for a solution ("Multiple Startup Projects" with all as "Action->None"), Visual Studio is more than happy to build and pretend it's running something

So for context, this was taken shortly after torrential rain in... I wanna say the Amazon. The rainwater overflows the river and since it's rainwater, it's crystal clear.

stupid... automatic "set startup projects for our project" extension not working right

It's also at the bottom of a basin and the surrounding rock is limestone.
So the overflow is naturally filtered.

These are all but 1 of the books in my to read list. Not pictured: Pride’s spell by @MattFnWallace, which I am currently reading. Just off the right: Furies of Calderon by @longshotauthor , the previous book I finished.

7:37 PM
I read the Codex Alera series relatively recently and I really enjoyed it. I like Jim Butcher's writing in general

I have not yet read a jim butcher book I haven't liked

@KevinvanderVelden I can't stand his writing :)

user15026
I read a bunch of his Dresden Files books, I found them...very similar so I got bored

user15026
I am not sure if Codex Alera would be different enough

The Dresden Files books were like exemplar of how to misuse deus ex machina.

user15026
7:39 PM
Mind you my Goodreads Want to Read pile is 422 things, and I have 120 unread books on my ereader....

I know I read more than 1 Codex Alera book (possibly not 2 full books though) and that I got bored, but I remember very little otherwise.

user15026
So I suspect I wouldn't get to it for a good long while.

But this is why there are all sorts of different authors and styles.
I'm having a lot of trouble with the style in Red Rising as well and that has pretty universal acclaim.

Codex Alera is different. They're less episodic and more something on the scale of say a Jordan or a Goodkind

I think it's fine.

7:40 PM
@Ash FWIW I did not particular enjoy Dresden Files but I did like Codex Alera

user15026
I always feel bad when like....other people are like THIS BOOK IS AMAZING and I can't get into it

Also, I see books 4 and 5 of Wheel of Time in that picture. If I remember right, that's getting close to the slow part of the series

user15026
@ToxicFrog Good to know :)

I liked Eli Monpress more, though

@ToxicFrog I remember when I realized how magic works in Eli Monpress I thought, "Oh, so Codex Alera but it makes more sense."

7:41 PM
But it's also only a dozen books, so it's going to be more condensed

@StrixVaria hah! Yes.
Also all the revelations about the overall cosmology of the setting that you get in the later books had me rolling around in delight

@murgatroid99 I'm not even sure if I'm going to continue reading that one, along with Feist

user15026
@ToxicFrog Ah, I kinda burned out on those

@ToxicFrog Eli Monpress was really rough in the middle but it was so worth it.

I haven't read WoT in like 4 years

7:43 PM
@Ash I liked them all, but books 2 and 3 are definitely the weakest of the five, I think

@Nzall The thing is, I kind of rag on the series, but personally I think the ending by Brandon Sanderson is worth the slog in the middle

It finishes really strong, though
@Nzall which Feist?

user15026
@ToxicFrog That's where I am kinda stuck, I read til book 3 and I jsut can't make myself read more

@ToxicFrog Magician, the very first book

user15026
I have too many other things that I want to read more

7:44 PM
it's the gold one in the center

@Ash that's fair
@Ash I mean, like I said, I enjoyed all of them and loved the last book, but if you aren't enjoying them as much you probably won't love the last one either, and even if you'll still like it you have a big queue, so...
@Nzall oh right

@murgatroid99 When I finish Elderlings and The Book of the New Sun and Malazan, and have built up my tolerance for this slow-paced and plodding style, I might give WoT one last chance.

Hadn't looked at the time

I gave up in book 5 last time.

Honestly, I liked Magician a lot when I first read it, and I still take it out from time to time to re-read favourite individual scenes, but I don't think it would survive a reread
(and I first read it when I was like 12, so)
IMO the Ideal Feist Experience is to play the Dynamix game Betrayal at Krondor and read Daughter of the Empire by Feist & Wurts, but OTOH I did both of those things after reading the Riftwar trilogy and maybe I wouldn't have enjoyed them nearly as much without that context.

Ave
7:47 PM
So, I ended up grabbing A Hat in Time. So far, I'm loving it.

@StrixVaria I gave up in book 9, which is even slower and more plodding than any previous book

The Elderlings books have given me more of a perspective on how to enjoy books like this, though. I could read about Fitz doing just about anything at this point and enjoy it, just because he's such a good character.
I don't know if WoT will work the same way but it might be worth another shot.
I did like Mat, and I could probably find some compassion for Rand and Perrin if I just watch them grow rather than waiting for the next big plot point to happen.

@StrixVaria see, I bailed on those not because nothing was happening but because I didn't like any of the characters or any of the things happening to them and it just seemed to be total misery porn

@ToxicFrog The first trilogy was ok, and I almost gave up on it. The Tawny Man trilogy was much, much better.

Whereas I bailed on WoT because each book introduced twice as many plot threads as it resolved, with the result that book 9 spends a thousand pages on three days of total non-events
Despite actually liking some of the characters and being really interested in where the story was ultimately going

7:51 PM
I didn't like how it was a played-straight "good vs. evil" plot.
The bad guy was bad because he was bad and he had to be stopped because we're not bad, we're good.

Yeah, that part wasn't so interesting, but there were enough interesting things in it that I wanted to keep going. But each book took longer than the one before it to say less.
Ultimately I have much better books to spend my time on.

Ah, it’s that part of my day where I cross another restaurant off my “lunch options” list because they snuck cheese into my food even though I specifically asked them to remove it.

:<

Aw, I missed a WoT discussion?

@Fluttershy just barely, there's still time to join in~

7:58 PM
@Fluttershy I'm pretty sure you can keep it going

@ToxicFrog Oh, okay!

I mean, I don't really have much to contribute apart from what I already said, except perhaps that the WoT FPS was surprisingly good.

My dad started reading the series shortly after I finished it. He's on book six, and asking me questions, and I'm genuinely surprised at how little I remember it.

I mean, when there’s details like the specific shade of someone’s robes, I’m sure there’s plenty to forget.

@StrixVaria This was disappointing, but the characters made it enjoyable for me. Mat and Perrin, specifically. I found myself wanting to skip ahead to their next chapters any time Rand was the focus.
@Yuuki If stuff like that bothers you, never read A Song of Ice and Fire. lol

8:00 PM
Also, WoT brings up another one of my pet peeves. “Crossed their arms” is perfectly fine, you don’t need to write “crossed her arms under her breasts” every single time.

@Yuuki :crosses arms under breasts: :smooths skirt: :tugs braid:

@Fluttershy I literally only liked Mat as a character, which made most of it excruciating.

sniffs

@Fluttershy I liked Rand, but book 6 was boooooooring.

@Yuuki How will you know she's still got breasts and hasn't lost them since last time though?

8:01 PM
@Frank Rand was easily the least enjoyable character for me. Egwene was a close second, though.

@Fluttershy @KevinvanderVelden What's your fortnite game name?

@StrixVaria I can understand that being troublesome.

(I think Kevin was the other one who said he played)

I think my stance on WoT these days is "it was hugely significant 30 years ago, but even if you specifically want gigantic doorstopper fantasy series you could beat someone to death with there are now better options"

@Sterno I was

8:02 PM
@Fluttershy Rand I thought was decent, but he got seriously shafted in character development later on.

@Sterno Uhhh... I'll have to tell you in a couple of hours when I'm home from work.

@Fluttershy Min supremacy

I'm one of those people who hated Mat
Okay
I didn't hate Mat
I just overreact that direction because so many people like him
The whole "I dont' want to be a hero" thing grates after a while

@Sterno The guy's a lazy grifter that manages to luck into things.
Which, to be fair, is what his whole shtick was supposed to be.

@Sterno Mat easily had the best character development in the series, imo.

8:04 PM
And you can't help but like him anyways. He's too honest about his motives regardless.

@Ronan I mean, given that major female characters in epic fantasy are almost always described as having big breasts (or "bosoms", rather), I feel like crossing their arms that way is about the only option.
So "crossed their arms" is more than good enough.

@Sterno I am Yourdoom
And you're already in my friendslist

@KevinvanderVelden Obligatory comment about how you don't have to threaten someone just because they asked for your username

Oh, your'e already on my list

@Yuuki Yeah I was being satirical

8:06 PM
@Sterno I think I'm NihilistRonin, and feel like you're already friends with me in the Epic launcher?

@Fluttershy It's a crazy low bar though

@Ronan Just felt like elaborating on it further.

His development is "I'm SELFISH but not really BUT I SAY I AM" to "okay I won't say I am quite so much"

... someone wants to give me 109 gold and let me borrow some wild pigs for 2 pieces of art
I AM THE NETHERLANDS, I HAVE 300 GOLD PER TURN INCOME

also, "blergh girls, but they sure are pretty"

8:07 PM
@KevinvanderVelden It's been awhile since I've done an out-of-context star.

"I AM THE NETHERLANDS" -@KevinvanderVelden

Have you heard the Tragedy of Darth @KevinvanderVelden?

circles around on their hoard of ebooks for a bit.
Ok, I think Embedded next, then either Code of Conduct or SPQR depending on if I'm in a fictiony or nonfictiony mood.

WHY DOES EVERYONE WANT PRIDE AND PREJUDICE

8:12 PM
Of the 13 books in the image I linked, the Codex Alera ones and the right upper 4 books are the ones I definitely want to finish reading before starting to read other books in the Cosmere worlds
the other 4 aren't really as enticing

8:36 PM
@KevinvanderVelden only 300? Thems rookie numbers

@Dragonrage I'm also currently in a war
No genghis khan, I am not giving you the famed dutch novel pride and prejudice.

I was playing on prince once and I just bought cities from people. It was great

I'll never understand why people get my name wrong in text only conversations
as in, I've only talked to them in text and I introduced myself to them in text
and I mean my RL name, not my internet handle which you all know and love

@Wipqozn *hate
It's the worst name after all

@Dragonrage none of them want to sell :(

8:39 PM
@KevinvanderVelden I love when people declare war against me. They send a bunch of troops which I slaughter and then they try to make peace and I refuse until they give me a bunch of stuff
@KevinvanderVelden that's a bummer. I forget who I was playing as, but I had like 3k gold per turn at one point

Civ 6? o.o

So I just threw gold at people for stuff I wanted
It might not have been 3k but it was over 1k I know that much. And yeah civ 6

I DON'T WANT YOUR NITER AND 38 GOLD IS NOTHING. YOU'RE NOT GETTING SENSE AND SENSIBILITY

user15026
@Wipqozn I get that a bunch too, and I am just like....ITS RIGHT THERE

@Wipqozn yeah, that sucks @Wopqizn

Ave
8:48 PM
(screenshots have weird glitches for some reason but yeah)

Yo you playing hat in time?

Ave
yup

that game made me so happy

Ave
The crows are going full r/totallynotrobots on me
@quartata it's good

@Dragonrage I used to do this in 3 all the time. So much fun

9:01 PM
@Wipqozn whizz coupon is hard to pronounce

I just bought Nier: Automata
It was like $30 man that came down quick

For those that are interested I am currently converting VB6 code to VB.net code, and to make things more fun I haven't used either language previously.

i used to do that back in 2007
VB6 is not fun

Q: Anyone know the name of this game

rochasdvI am trying to remember a mobile game (I played this in Android, but I'm not sure if it was available for iOs or even for pc). I remember this game had a very relaxing and beautiful soundtrack, the game was something like that: I think you're an "atom" or something like that, and something big ...

@Dragonrage protip: both are terrible

9:11 PM
@Dragonrage don't get poisoned
@GnomeSlice it's really good

@GodEmperorDune so I've learned. It might be worth throwing everything out and redoing it in c# but I don't know the code base well enough to do that
Also I dont have the ability to make that decision

rewrites just for language are never a good thing

@GnomeSlice It's a damn steal at that price.

@GodEmperorDune we were just talking about PHP, c'mon

I'm updating to vb.net because they are similar enough to make it not that huge of a headache and it will allow me to not have to use a vm running xp to use vb6

9:15 PM
@ToxicFrog you gotta have a better reason to justify to business
new bells and whistles, better maintenance, etc

@GodEmperorDune fair
That said, I think that's implicit in any language rewrite

9:29 PM
@ToxicFrog @Fluttershy oh I know. I love PlatinumGames
Have you seen their new project?
3d arpg based on one of those shitty but really successful mobile p2w rpgs

Thank you for many reply about 1st anniversary of NieR:Automata. But I wanna show all message to our team. So, please reply to this official tweet. Thank you. :) https://twitter.com/NieR_JPN/status/966692159834304512
@GnomeSlice i'm curious if it's retelling the story from the mobile game, now not all broken up with freemium mechanics, or whether it's a new storyline in the same world

@Memor-X I have no idea, the mobile game doesn't look like it even has a story but I also haven't played it
Probably does
I wonder how weeby the platinum games game will be. They're usually pretty good at not doing that, even with shit like Bayonetta lol
My favourite devs for action games though. Probably buy it anyway

@GnomeSlice it does but like other games like it you're limited by how much you can advance if you try and play for free
like you can get passed it buy paying real money or waiting for free give-a-ways

Q: Are questions asking about game files on topic?

Shelby115Are questions like these, What does each option in game.cfg mean? Where and in what format are the in-game assets, sounds, models, etc. stored? Asking about the games files and such on topic? Looking at the help center, they don't appear to be on topic but they don't appear to be explicitly o...

@Lazers2.0 Off-topic, but still upvoted.

@Frank A quick glance could make someone think those are article in-game images, but they're not

@Lazers2.0 "something like this image" technically off-topic, but it was close enough to get some very probable answers imo
I was thinking "Osmos" halfway through the question
it fits everything but the screenshot

@John yeh but one answer is only correct because it matches the images
I checked the play store and agree with you that based on the screenshots provided, this is the game. However, the initial release of this game was 5/16/2015, which doesnt fit into the OP's timeline. So either the OP is off on when they played it, or this is not the game they are actually looking for. — Kyle Rone 25 mins ago

@Memor-X yeah that's def a problem

10:07 PM
Actually I should clear the comments up a bit too

I look forward to a p soon

Honestly the answers and commenst around that question is a good example of why we don't allow ITG without an artifact

@Wipqozn but....we do allow ITG with an artifact?
unless you mean why we shouldn't allow ITG even with an artifact
in which case this question does make a rather strong case for that

@John Gosh darn it

@Wipqozn I know, I know, I didn't wait 2 minutes
:(
Unless you forgot what questions we actually allow :p

10:10 PM
@John 2 minutes don't apply to modabuse

@John I just close all questions. IT's the only way to be sure.

@Wipqozn Ooooh good idea

@Yuuki should like this new hotfix (2nd bit)
(everyone should like the first bit)

That's so great actually
Bushes and lures in my face were actually my 2 biggest problems with eidolon hunting
> Removed the “while sliding” and “undetected” requirement for the "Kill X Dargyns with a Bow" Riven challenge to alleviate some frustrations. Any existing challenges with this requirement will revert into one without it.

Drivable Dargyns that are commandeered by Pilots now count towards the "Kill X Dargyns with a Bow" Riven challenge.
oh thank goodness

I didn't mind the undetected one tbh
Step 1: Grab a sniper. Step 2: ???, Step 3: Riven

10:36 PM
> with a Bow

@John ooh missed that part
Yeaaah
@Yuuki also, I see your 1 zoompig and raise you, many zoompigs: i.imgur.com/7ncU6QC.gifv

user15026

Jessica Jones returns in MArch
I thought it was, like, still 6 years away or something

@Wipqozn yay, i'm looking forward to that
and luke cage season 2
daredevil and iron fist can go in the sea

Iron Fist : The Defenders :: Thor : The Avengers
Except Loki was actually a good (for Marvel) villain.
And The Avengers was a good movie.
Actually there are some stunning parallels here.
Season 1 of Daredevil was good just like the first Iron Man was good.
But then it all went downhill from there.
Now to figure out whether Jessica Jones or Luke Cage is the Captain America analogue.
