Q: PS4 - 3 fast bleeps during some games

djsmiley2kMy PS4 makes bleeping noises during some games (it may occur in all games and I've not noticed?) It's 3 fast bleeps, then silence for anything between 5 and 30 secoonds. There's no indication of anything happening on screen, or in any menus. Any idea what it is? From reading online I've seen e...

20:26
@ATaco He had an accomplice, an extra small medium at large too.
/movelast 4 android hell
@Lazers2.0 oh dear I can rant so much to this
Not anymore because it's delete
I mean I suppose you can do anything you want in bridge
I can rant here
Well not anything
20:38
y'know what
it's not worth it
BACK IN MY DAY GAMES WERE HARD
nobody cares
user15026
There will always be weirdly elitist people shaking their canes at the world.
And if you can't find difficult enough games, it means that you're not looking hard enough
@Ash wait, how do you watch your eyes roll out of your head
@KevinvanderVelden one word
cyborg.
20:49
The eyes being cameras doesn't help if they're not in the head
well
it works the same way you see lakitu in SM64
I can't english.
21:03
I love that in SM64 they like, made the camera an actual entity with an in-universe reason for being there lol
Back in my day, passwords were just a huge memory dump. ya had to hope you had paper or you were NEVER going to finish Legacy of the Wizard.
@Maximillian Psh YOU GOTTA GET GOOD
IT'S SPOONFEEDING I TELL YA
Also hey, didn't notice that you got a new username.
I mean I saw you on pc but i.stack is banned so
I retired my previous because it's not 1990 anymore and I'm not the admins son on the Thunder Dome BBS.
21:19
That's a cool name for a BBS, I guess.
It was back then.
I envy Ryan Gosling for his ability to pull off looking cool in jackets.
I was born a little too late for BBSes though, but I used dialup so #success.
Actually, I envy Ryan Gosling for a lot of things, but that's probably one of the biggest.
My first modem was a 2400. Imagine your internet speed limit being 2.4 kilobits/sec
At it's peak we had 56k, slightly more if you had one of those weird connections with compression enabled.

Cat. Put that back in the proper case please.
22:13
lmao spy party
> A mentioned above, we were in the unique position of actually needing to put a blonde white guy in our video game for diversity reasons, so we went for the full Northern European royalty look just to seal the deal. He also takes the lead in terms of most formal outfit, with white tie and tails. We wanted somebody in white tie for sartorial diversity, but we also needed a bit more blue at the party so we put the sash on him and he instantly stepped up the class hierarchy a notch or two.
22:25
@Unionhawk i care and agree. Games are too easy these days. OG Castlevania was one of the hardest games I ever played, yet Skyrim was the easiest
Well we don't have to follow quarter-eater game design anymore.
It just has difficult gameplay, not the idea of lives and stuff. It would still be almost as hard with infinite lives!
Over this way to Dark Souls, good sir.
Yeah but only to make the game last longer because they couldn't fit much game into the game. These days there's just more content so they don't need to make you play the same bit over and over
@Maximillian I have heard alot of stuff of the terrible stories of the Super Duper Evil land of dark souls
I beat dark souls so it can't be that bad
To your castlevania->skyrim I raise you Kirby->Dark Souls. Clearly games are getting harder.
Games Should Be Difficult To Approach And If You Don't Agree Ur No Hardcore Pro Much Gamer
The Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde game is clearly the best game ever made.
@Ronan I see your point on the Dark Souls thing, but that, as far as I know, is one of the few challenging games I know of. Fallout 3 was hard for me, mainly because guns suck, and there is little point in describing Skyrim's lack of challenges.
22:42
Bad Rats can put itself in an unwinnable state therefore it's hard and good
@TheMattbat999 Geometry Wars, Crypt of the NecroDancer, Super Hexagon, Shovel Knight, XCOM, Invisible Inc., Undertale, etc.
Wait. I own Stardew Valley? When did that happen?
You a Mountie? Yes Sir I am You? Nah mate, beaver. Ah, sweet
Cc @canadians
@Ronan Not challenging enough, 2/10
@Ronan never heard of any if them
I know there are some hard games, however, just not as many
A smaller percentage of games maybe, but more games total. In the 90s there were like 5 games a year.
22:49
@TheMattbat999 Where are you getting your stats from?
What counts as "hard"?
Objectively
@TheMattbat999 back in the NES times, not all games were hard, there were just a lot of really badly designed games
many of them were hard not because they were intended to be hard, but because of things like bad controls, unfair enemies, glitches and all kinds of things that wouldn't be tolerated today
Clearly games should kick you down the stairs then tell you to get better at not getting kicked down the stairs.
(For $10 you can have camo skin stairs)
@GodEmperorDune the tweet makes more sense not-oneboxed. The lack of punctuation was killing me until I opened the tweet
@Chippies yeah onebox really breaks most formatting
@DanmakuGrazer mainly my own experience. Could be I played all the easy games of the few past years and all the hard ones of past generations?
22:57
@TheMattbat999 You might have some selection bias there.
@TheMattbat999 You probably didn't play a large fraction of the games in any generation
@Ronan oh... well
Also, games get easier as you get older and play more games
then they get harder as you get older
@murgatroid99 depends on the game
22:59
@murgatroid99 could be that. I played alot of older games as a child and newer games as I got older
@GodEmperorDune I'm just saying that any individual game is probably easier after you've played more games in general
replaces @TheMattbat999 with a very tiny clip from Commentocracy
3
You get familiarity and practice with common control schemes, mechanics, etc.
@murgatroid99 oh because you are more familiar with genre mechanics?
inb4ed by lag
control schemes... maybe. I find that some games think they are too cool for standard controls and make everything feel terrible
looking at you ME andromeda
If your game doesn't permit control rebindings, plz get in the hell
23:02
so true
@badp I am not entirely sure what Commentocracy means, but from the results I got on Google, I am going to take that as a slight insult
@murgatroid99 can confirm - I recently played Donkey Kong Jr on NES, which I enjoyed a lot back in the day, but could barely beat it. This time I beat it without losing once on first try, it was so easy
@ToxicFrog A game that lets you rebind strafe left, but not strafe right.

Q: How can I get better performance using Playstation Now?

Spam_HamwichI attempted to use playstation now recently (playstation's streaming service for ps3 games on a ps4) and the performance was extremely poor. Aside from the video rendering at 720p, the input lag made games unplayable. Is there anything I can do to optimize my connection speed? I want the service ...

@Maximillian Lets you rebind both, but the strafe left key needs to be further right on the keyboard than strafe right
23:07
So, overall, "games used to be harder" can be interpreted as "I used to be younger"
Re game difficulty over time -- I think that games are easier on average now -- there are a lot of childhood games I remember being brutally hard that, when I revisit, are still brutally hard.
@murgatroid99 also get off muh lawn
But I think this is largely because we have gotten better at making games.
@ToxicFrog also, a lot of games have added a lot of convenience features which have made the games somewhat easier. Like infinite lives and save points
There are also a lot more games. So even if games are easier on average, you can still find more than enough difficult games
23:08
@ToxicFrog i think a lot of this is due to UI/UX improvements that ended up becoming standard
Difficulty is, for the most part, no longer something that happens by accident, because the UI was terrible or the game was balanced for the arcade or something
having to restart a game that you've played for 4 hours because you died would be pretty devastating
or having to finish Skyrim in one sitting
shudders
Things like the ability to save are now assumed as a standard feature
@GodEmperorDune yes, exactly
That and greater understanding of game design and how to create the kinds of difficulty you want
Also, old arcade games were super difficult because they wanted to extract as much money as possible from people
@ToxicFrog exactly. I got no better at Castlevania: Bloodlines after all these years of trying it over and over. I actually got worse! :)
23:10
like go back and play KOTOR 1 and the game feels atrocious
and really, the whole thing about games being balanced around having microtransactions these days, and everyone complaining about it - that's literally how arcades worked
@murgatroid99 yeah, and a lot of early console and PC games were balanced around that assumption even if they weren't direct ports of arcade games
I would just argue that the arcade game days were the bad old days before the good old days of early console games that don't try to take all of your money
@Chippies on that note, I have no nostalgia for arcades and I'm glad that business model is, or was, dead~
Yeah, that
23:12
look, gaming has gone downhill since pong so...
@murgatroid99 the early console games though were basically arcade games with infinite coins
@Chippies and that makes a huge difference
@murgatroid99 it does, but it was still balanced around you getting killed at every corner
@Chippies This is how we got Nintendo Hard games.
Games that couldn't be beaten in a rental period.
If you accept this framing (which I don't; there are still lots of good games coming out today that don't use MTs), the "good old days" were the post-arcade, pre-microtransaction days and what's happening now is a regression to the "bad old days" that predated them.
23:14
@ToxicFrog see even this only applies to a subset of games
Horizon was good about this, but it did have a tiny preorder incentive, and it does have one DLC region.
AAA games may be going hard microtransactions and DLC but indies are not necessarily doing that
@GodEmperorDune yes, I literally just said that
I am a little irked that the latest CoD has acheivements for WATCHING PEOPLE OPEN LOOT CRATES.
@ToxicFrog my bad, i didn't read properly
@Maximillian CoD going to CoD though
23:16
NEW RULE. CONTENT OBTAINED WITH MICROPAYMENTS MUST BE MICRO IN GAME SIZE.
On the subject of good games that do not involve microtransactions, but which nonetheless are hard, I just finished Cryptark and started Salt & Sanctuary
The latter is unashamedly 2d Dark Souls
I've been playing Hollow Knight, which is a different approximation of 2D Dark Souls, and the final boss of the new expansion is brutally hard
Dead Cells any good?
@Maximillian I think it's OK, but not great. As Yahtzee points out, the brutal difficulty of Dark Souls doesn't really mix that well with the permadeath of a roguelite
And, oddly enough, I hear The Mummy: Demastered isn't half bad for a Metroidvania.
23:27
I have to say again that Hollow Knight is an amazing game, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Metroidvanias
@Maximillian That's actually pretty hilarious.
@Maximillian Call of Duty just felt lazy and became just bad (to me) after Black Ops 2 (not including that game, however)
Grumble grumble urge to reinstall Quake
23:44
Hmm... do I take a nap for an hour or do I play some games?
@Fluttershy How good is the Wardcliff Coil?
@Yuuki It's... fun? I've heard it's good for some things, but I'm not a fan, myself. Still fun to use though.
@Fluttershy Just from the item description, it sounds like a quasi-Gjallerhorn.
@Yuuki It can be, if the target is large enough. Curtain Call or Sins of the Past are more Gjallarhorn-ish, imo.
And reset's tomorrow, right?
Oh hey, I have a Nightfall strike milestone on my Warlock.
