Bah, we have a singleton class that has a helper thread, but that helper thread only interacts with the singleton class through the public interface instead of being a friend class and using private or protected methods. The helper thread is the only thing that should be calling some of the currently public methods, so I can break encapsulation by changing the state of the singleton when it shouldn't be changed.
