Fun bug here. We encrypt certain secret values in our database. the fields these passwords are stored in have a max length of 255 chars, and we have validation for this. However, encryption makes values longer, so if we enter a max length of 255 in our frontend, values that are long enough trigger validation errors because the encryption makes it longer than 255 chars.

Hence block based encryption, you can say "It's up to X long". The other options for encryption algorithms are to have a max input size (bad) or having a N:M relation for input:output size (bad)

Basically, we got a 255 char hex key, we turn that to bytes and use that as our AES key

this hex key is unique for each instance of our product

And if we enter a 255 char password to test it, we get an error that our encrypted password is too long
