I would have sworn that was a dutch pokestop
I'm fairly sure there is (or was) a cow statue like that by one of the stores in my street
(It's a cheese shop)
(Yes, cheese shops are things that exist in other places then monty python)

Q: Is there a way to get more candies in Pokemon Go?

demirbCatching pokemon, transfering, hatching egg all brings candies. Are there other ways to increase the candy amount? For example if I use my lucky egg, would I be able get 2x candies from transferring?

We have a pokestop called "back of trainstation" nearby. it's extremely nothing special. Whoever got that submitted to ingress was good at getting bullshit points accepted.
@Arperum Is it so nothing special that it's actually noteworthy?
@Unionhawk That's brilliant
I approve of both your joke and existence @Unionhawk

Q: Anyway to change mount speed?

DH.What buffs/debuffs/accessories can affect the mount speed in Terraria, PC version? I've been reading that nothing changes it's speed, but I wonder if there's anything that can change the speed, even it's slower or faster.

11:28
@Wipqozn Has let you live another day.
oh m fuck this intern
@Ronan Damn that @Wipqozn guy is really abusing his modpowers
she just asked how to reboot her computer
@Wipqozn RIP intern
What
"pres the reset button...?"
"it's frozen"
"press the power button on the laptop...?"
"I just thought there was a key for linux"
"Not if it's frozen"
*fails to reboot it*
"hold ithe button down until it reboots"
@TimStone I was trying to find that archer clip that cracks a joke about responsible gun control laws, but I failed (cc @fredley)
11:31
Both Archer and lack of Archer is now ccable?
Lol
@Ronan I think so (cc @fredley)
I'm in sea catching pokemon
Waterproof phone? =p
11:35
@KevinvanderVelden or he's on a boat. Or in an underwater evil villain base.
Yep
@Wipqozn the first isn't in the sea. I'll allow the second one for cool factor
@KevinvanderVelden yeah but @arda is youngster, he uses all kinds of slang
True, he's also a bidoof and you can't trust those.
I mean, they're not even in the original 150!
Youngster @arda?
11:36
@Wipqozn yes
Also, @arda, how did you learn English? Do they teach it in school in Turkey?
Yes but as
A 2
@arda A 2?
A2 level
I worked my way up to C1
11:40
That's a turkish thing, not a global thing =p
I live my days in English. Books. Movies. Games.
Wait no it's not o.o
TIL that those letters an numbers @arda just used are an actual thing in actual world
The A Level (Advanced Level) is a subject-based qualification conferred as part of the General Certificate of Education, as well as a school leaving qualification offered by the educational bodies in the United Kingdom and the educational authorities of British Crown dependencies to students completing secondary or pre-university education. A number of countries, including Singapore, Kenya, Mauritius and Zimbabwe have developed qualifications with the same name as and a similar format to the British A Levels. Obtaining A Level or equivalent qualifications is generally required for university entrance...
Well then that's very impressive @arda
11:41
Afk swimming
We learned French in school nd I sucked at it
languages are hard (like your mom)
Same. I'm always impressed at how well people speak English.
We're taught english, french and german in high school. Highest levels also gets taught latin. We're allowed to drop either french or german after 2 years
@Ronan we start at a relatively tender age
I'm just happy that I speak the language other folks feel they need to learn. I think it used to be french, WAY BACK WHEN, but pretty sure England fixed that.
MOTHER ENGLAND
SPREADING HE EMPIRE LOVE TO ALL HER CHILDREN
11:44
I chose to study some French in middle school for an additional three hours a week
WITH HER LOVESHIPS
We should all just go back to the glory days when the netherlands ruled everything
@badp How many languges can you speak and/or write?
Italian, English
@badp I learnt some french in primary school, but probably not to the same extent.
11:45
and well kinda read most latin languages because latin
and I guess I can recognize common words in German and Dutch at least when it comes to public transportation
or at least eyeball them when they appear on the screen
I need to spend the time to learn Dutch numbers
I can sort of understand most train announcements but the important stuff -- the numbers -- are nigh incomprehensible
Heh, they're just standard arabic ones =p
It's all like "uur zeifen strinder stistech from dreedport spoor feh ahhh"

Q: How do the Discord Orb and Headshot multiplier interact?

NerdyCanuckAnother question has addressed how the Discord Orb and the Caduceus Damage Boost interact, but stacking is inconsistent in Overwatch. So far, it appears that unlike bonuses are multiplicative, while like bonuses are additive if they stack at all. But I'm unsure if that is truly the case across ...

Q: How to backup Minion Rush?

KeyWeeUsrI wonder, there's an option to sign in with Google or Facebook account, mostly this tracks achievements which that much important to me. I have some costumes in the game that I won or bought with the tokens from challenges. I'd like to know where does the game saves the data about what costumes ...

@badp I have no idea what that is supposed to be
(you know, after romanization)
@KevinvanderVelden something like "is departing at ??:?? from track ???a"
11:51
Feh aah => Vijf A? (5A)
I guess
I dunno
10 at least stands out
I mean, that'd be closest to that one
I wasn't thinking of any numeral in particular
And zeifen would be zeven (7)
yeah, I can tell 7 because it's usually my track number
and, uh, acht? (8)
I remember when they added English announcement for some trains in Milan
they used a TTS package for both Italian and Engilsh, but somehow the English messages were nigh unhearable and all mumbled together
11:54
Een, twee, drie, vier, vijf, zes, zeven, acht, negen, tien, elf, twaalf, dertien, number+"tien"
@KevinvanderVelden English numbers aren't so far off this.
@StrixVaria pronunciation very much is
I don't know how to pronounce Dutch, so I will take your word for it.
How similar is it to German? They look pretty similar.
11:56
Eins, zwei, drei, vier, fünf, sechs, sieben, acht, neun, zehn, elf, zwölf, dreizehn, number+"zehn"
I love fünf
easily the most memorable thing of German
@StrixVaria Yeah, pretty much the same
Though more an eh sound then an ei sound
@KevinvanderVelden The vowels are pronounced slightly differently it seems.
I still can't say most numbers with 6 in them in German. Sechzig (60) is the hardest thing in the language for me to say.
Sechzehn (16) is also pretty hard.
11:57
After 20 it's just "$number en $decimalnumber"
With 20 (twintig), 30 (dertig), 40 (veertig) being non regular and the rest just being $number tig
so 42 is something like veertig en zwai?
Twee en veertig
because I take a train at :42 fairly regularly and I never hear anything that sounds even remotely like that
Other way around but yes
Same in German, the ones digit comes first, so 42 is zweiundvierzig.
Of course you remove spaces too since German.
11:59
I can read Dutch and mostly understand what it's supposed to mean, but I don't understand them when they are talking.
@StrixVaria well there's no spaces in numbers either
the spelling doesn't mean much to me since my problem is that when they make voice announcements about the train all I can do is read the faces of people around me
But for pronounciation there's a pause so I put a space in there
@KevinvanderVelden In English, when numbers are written out they still have spaces. It makes it easier to read.
that's pretty much the one moment when I need some Dutch in my life
other than that I can make do with total ignorance of the local language
12:01
@StrixVaria oh yeah, we don't do that. We do put dots on random vowels (drieënveertig)
5/7 would recommend
Numbers are one of the hardest things to understand at speed in a new language, too.

Q: Pokémon go Pokémon attack

F8iCan I change my Pokémon attack or it is just random, and if it have high attack moves when the Pokémon evolved do they have higher chance to get powerful moves

the announcement of Amsterdam Zuid on the metro is hilariously long and convoluted
12:02
they spell out six or seven different tram and bus numbers that stop there
wish there was a recording somewhere
I mean okay if we're talking long
the announcement for Milano Porta Garibaldi usually starts as soon as you leave the previous station and is barely over by the time you get there
but that's because it's given in Italian and English
Well this is slightly annoying. The Windows 10 Redstone update is scheduled to release the 2nd of August, and I'm leaving on vacation to the Scandinavian countries on the 6th
so I have only 3 evenings to patch my laptop and my desktop and make sure that I don't have any issues with either.
apparently some people in Italy like the train announcement system so much there's dozens of different videos where they just recreate train announcements one after the other
@Ronan Nope, most of the other stuff around is exactly as unnoteworthy.
"IT'S LIKE I'M REALLY TAKING A TRAINVENTURE"
@badp Especially since you live in Amsterdam IIRC, my girlfriend once had to switch to English in Amsterdam to be even understood in the shop.
12:11
(I don't live in Amsterdam, but yeah, almost)
in Pallet Town, 3 mins ago, by Himarm
i was double fisting a clarfary
@Arperum wait. she's... dutch, right?
I mean I can imagine trying to run a shop in Amsterdam without speaking any Dutch and so long as I have a good attorney and a good lawyer I might even be able to pull it off
Welcome to the netherlands, we have dialects. We have the best dialects
I wonder if it would make news
a shop in Amsterdam with a "sorry we don't speak Dutch here" sign outside
@KevinvanderVelden who's paying for them?
12:17
fair enough
@KevinvanderVelden so, @Arperum
betalen, @Arperum
I was about to speak up against @KevinvanderVelden, but then I realized that would mean i have to pay as well
@StrixVaria Isn't seventeen in German Siebzehn?
BEEEEETAAAALEEEEEENN
instead of Siebenzehn?
12:20
@Nzall Yeah, and sixteen is a little different too.
Oh well.
just claim it's the pre-reform spelling
you'll probably get away with it
@badp I'm fairly sure I could say anything to you in dutch and you would not understand it

Q: Running GTA V on a MacBook Pro (Late 2013 13")

Dubstep_catsI have a MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013 13") with intel iris 5100. @Nzall I would only take that bet with negative odds
it's not a bet, it's pretty much a guarantee
@badp Negative odds? Isn't that more like "I pay to insult you"?
12:21
yes
if I get it, I get paid. if I don't, I get paid.
Only worth it if it doesn't involve getting banned afterwards for insulting you
no one said the payment would only be monetary
oh
MY PRIJSLIJST ISN'T QUITE SO SIMPLE
you can ask @Wipqozn for details
or should I write pryslyst to troll @KevinvanderVelden?
I don't think he'd really mind
fun fact, "Wippen" is Dutch slang for humping. so every time I read @Wipqozn's name, I make the inappropriate link to hump cousin
or is that TMI?
12:24
you'd have to ask @Wipqozn's hump cousin
3
@Nzall My word drops monocle
@Wipqozn I'd say that's a pretty appropriate reaction to my inappropriate mind
@Wipqozn btw, how do you pronounce your name?
the canon is soft-q, but the canon is wrong. The q is obviously hard.
whip-kh-ozn
This is always how I've been pronouncing it
@KevinvanderVelden No, the people in the shop actually did not speak dutch at all.
I know what the canon is
@Arperum Don't the Netherlands have similar laws like Belgium when it comes to immigration? learn the language, accept the new culture, find a job?
but headcanon and canon and cannon are three different things
@Nzall Hell if I know. They had a job. Just were unable to speak Dutch.
Oh my god this is hilarious
The developers of DvZ did a screw-around stream
12:34
@Arperum Every single EU country, as well as the UK, have assimilation requirements for immigrants, meaning they need to learn one of the national languages, amongst other things
> We recently discovered that the Pokémon GO account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account. However, Pokémon Go only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address) and no other Google account information is or has been accessed or collected.
and they got rid of a particular section of bedrock because "it will change the second half of this map in ways we cannot possibly fathom"
> Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access. Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon Go or Niantic. Google will soon reduce Pokémon Go’s permission to only the basic profile data that Pokémon Go needs, and users do not need to take any actions themselves.
Yay
@badp I mean, sure have fun
@KevinvanderVelden reallij? nah
reallijch, even
12:38
@Nzall plenty of first-generation (or heck second generation) immigrants don't speak dutch. Source: My sister who teaches 20 turkish-dutch children in her class
I mean, it's a feature, not a bug
...if you ask me
@KevinvanderVelden not that. Cefr
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated in English as CEFR or CEF or CEFRL (compared to the German abbreviations GeR or GeRS, the French abbreviation CECR, the Italian QCER, or the Spanish MCER), is a guideline used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries. It was put together by the Council of Europe as the main part of the project "Language Learning for European Citizenship" between 1989 and 1996. Its main aim is to provide a method of learning, teaching and assessing...
the real problem I guess is for advertisers. A growing segment of the population can't be targeted by ads in Dutch
@KevinvanderVelden Those are actually grandfathered in. Belgium and Netherlands had immigration actions in the 50s for Turkish and Morrocan citizens with relaxed requirements. It wasn't until the Afghan and Iraqi wars 15 years ago that we started to have issues with immigrants not knowing the language
@badp I dunno, if you're planning on raising a family here I think you should learn the native language because that's what your children will be taught in.
12:40
@arda I forgot if I ever took a C1 cert in English
I don't know of any tests that were specifically named like that
it's not the name of a specific test
it's an equivalency system for tests
@Unionhawk Is there a punchline to this "hilarious" stream, or was that "we don't know our own game" the entire joke?
basically you can have a bunch of language competency tests, but you have to map your test results to a A1-C3 spectrum
@badp I'm not certified C1 yet. Missed by one single point last time though.
12:42
so that you can require, say, at least B2 english
and it doesn't matter who gives you the B2 certification
any* certification that's a B2 level certification will do
@Nzall It was "let's play our game, except not properly, if you want to play it properly, there's a real server to do that"
Yeah that's what I'm saying. I have never heard those terms used on any certifications for language
a.k.a. TOEFL is not perfect and does not do all the things
Well they need to be recognized tbh
@KevinvanderVelden what
it's pretty common to say "I need a B1/B2/C1", at least in Italy
12:43
The only reference to the netherlands in the linked wikipage is for immigrants =p
eh
this is at the European Union level
I'm surprised the NL is referenced at all
I'm not sure what to do now tbh
Not sure if cefr will apply once England leaves EU
Hahahahahahahahaha
@arda /cc @fredley
12:46
@arda the UK leaving the EU won't mean that those recognitions become useless
@Arperum it's unlikely I knew anyone on that train, but still :/
the apulian private railways were always pretty iffy
@Nzall arguable
@Arperum You could at least have mentioned that this was about an Italian train. when I saw you mention Belgian media my instinct was a bombing in Belgium
without the CEFR usually companies say "I want you to have scored at least 90 in the TOEFL"
@badp I don't even want to read the article for not wanting to deal with flashbacks of a crash I was involved in.
or "I want you to have passed the Cambridge English Test"
or whatever
and then you kinda have to take them all
even if they are equivalent
12:48
@Nzall No pls. I've had enough with 30+ dead on my birthday.
@badp yeah some Universities list scores needed, some just relies on cefr
@arda you usually can map scores back to CEFR
if they insist on TOEFL, fuck them
see also my sister's university
@Arperum Believe me, I felt physically weaker the entire day from watching één report on it for 8 straight hours
fuck that university
Probably could have something to do with just sitting in front of the TV for 8 hours and intently watching and chatting with you lot
12:50
I'll take PTE. Prepped for that.
@Arperum Holy fucking fuck
I'm just happy @badp wasn't on it
I turned the sound up but they're all speaking Italian. I'm not sure what I expected.
@Wipqozn he's not even in the same country
@KevinvanderVelden I can never keep track of where @badp is
@Wipqozn he is in the netherlands
I just know he's Italian and rides a lot of trains
12:52
Apparently, the train was often used by commuting university students
Where he works =p
Or at least, is employed. I'm not sure if he actually works
@KevinvanderVelden Canada
and also that @badp loves trains and thinks they're the best form of transport and thinks all train routes are brilliantly designed and love us to call him @trainp
I have lived for years in Apulia
took a train only once there tho
Oh, I read that as "I'm not sure where he actually works"
12:53
@badp And never again?
@KevinvanderVelden I didn't need to take trains
@Nzall :(
I could just walk to my middle school
I HADN'T YET DISCOVERED THE JOYS OF COMMUTING
Wait, there is joy in commuting? When did that happen
@badp when I was commuting, I wasn't really enjoying it. Mostly I just try to mute the other commuters mentally
I might have to commute home tonight though
12:57
it was mainly sarcastic
but, I mean, back when I took real 40 minute train rides, I got to sleep on the train
I didn't mind that one bit
here you guys even have Silence cars just for sleeping
I'd still rather have another 40 minutes of uninterrupted sleep
sleep is pretty good, especially when you like to go to bed late and have to wake up early
Just live in the office
@badp :(
GOING TO BED EARLIER IS NEVER AN OPTION
12:58
@badp and people who talk in them are the worst and need to be kicked out off the train
#lifehack
@badp is that your train?
@KevinvanderVelden the first time I didn't know. Some lady snapped her fingers and pointed to the window, then we understood
I find that if I don't sleep in 90 minute increments and at least 7.5 hours a day, i spend the first 3 hours of the day as a living zombie
@fredley he lives in the netherlands you know =p
12:59
last time I took such a car though, there was some dude with headphones on, and the music was playing through the speakers
@KevinvanderVelden I assume @badp is on all trains at all times
@fredley no, I've never travelled between Bari and Barletta by train
Which reminds me, I saw some sign today for some app which supposedly had Life HAcks in it cc @Sterno
@fredley @quantump

I mean, I think that's congratulations worthy, I dunno
If only I could fix that bug in my brain where I start doing random stuff while still asleep at 2AM, like rearranging the speakers on my desk or moving my backpack around in my room.
13:21
@fredley I know right? A YouTube link from @fredley that's not Friday. Definitely 10/10.
@Nzall I just rolled out of bed.
@Frank can I go back to bed? :(
@KevinvanderVelden I could say yes, but I don't think your boss would approve. :P

Fun bug here. We encrypt certain secret values in our database. the fields these passwords are stored in have a max length of 255 chars, and we have validation for this. However, encryption makes values longer, so if we enter a max length of 255 in our frontend, values that are long enough trigger validation errors because the encryption makes it longer than 255 chars.
@Wipqozn wat
1
Q: Does the CP of a caught pokemon result in a different max CP?

Chavi27If I catch for example a pidgey at CP 10 and then power him up to max, would his CP be better or the same as a pidgey that I caught at 150CP and powered up as much as possible?

@Nzall Shouldn't validation happen before encryption?
Validating an encrypted value makes zero sense
Or is that a database error
Sounds like it was a database error
See also: max length of 255 in frontend => trigger validations
@PrivatePansy Our validation happens between the service layer and the database layer. At this point, the values are already encrypted. Our database column for these values support lengths of up to 255 chars
@Nzall Why does your encryption result in different length values? That in itself is a security issue. The length of your encrypted value gives away information about the length of the original content. and that's bad.
@Arperum We use AES encryption, so that's more like a bug with AES
unless we're supposed to pad our input value until we reached the max length needed, but then how would we reverse the encryption?
@Arperum Hashing would do that, but not necessarily encryption, unless there's padding
13:48
@PrivatePansy Yes. I'd think that if something was important enough to encrypt that you could add padding to it to hide it's actual length.
@PrivatePansy yep, exactly. We need to be able to recall these values, because they're things like passwords for external software that doesn't support auth tokens
@Arperum actually the opposite
@Arperum The problem is that we need to reverse the encryption, else what's the point of encrypting it?
If the length of an unencrypted string is derivable from the encrypted string that's a problem. Hence the string being padded
and if you have a random value, you can't reverse the encryption
13:49
@KevinvanderVelden Yes. That's what I'm saying.
Which is a feature of any block based encryption system (read: most good ones)
@Arperum not really, you're saying that it's bad that it has different length values. I'm saying it's good that it has different length values as long as you can't work backwards
Hence block based encryption, you can say "It's up to X long". The other options for encryption algorithms are to have a max input size (bad) or having a N:M relation for input:output size (bad)
@KevinvanderVelden Well, in this case: shorter encrypted value means shorter original content.
Basically, we got a 255 char hex key, we turn that to bytes and use that as our AES key
this hex key is unique for each instance of our product
And if we enter a 255 char password to test it, we get an error that our encrypted password is too long
@Arperum yes, otherwise you have a max input length
AES uses 128 bits blocks, so 16 bytes
@KevinvanderVelden They have. Except it's not what they expect it to be.
13:54
So I looked up cryptographic padding on Wikipedia and found this instead
"The world wonders" was a phrase used as security padding in an encrypted message sent from Admiral Chester Nimitz to Admiral William Halsey, Jr. on October 25, 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The words, intended to be without meaning, were added to hinder Japanese attempts at cryptanalysis, but were mistakenly included in the decoded message given to Halsey and interpreted by him as a harsh and sarcastic rebuke. As a consequence, Halsey dropped his pursuit of a Japanese carrier task force in a futile attempt to aid United States forces in the Battle off Samar. == Background == On October...
@Arperum talking about the algorithm in general. Not the specific use case
@KevinvanderVelden I was talking about the specific use case.
This specific use case has a max input size of floor( 255 bytes / 16 bytes ) * 16 bytes
Because of the padding thing
@KevinvanderVelden wait, what do you mean by that?
if I encrypt a and aa, both of them return a 32 char string.
@KevinvanderVelden so 240 bytes.
13:57
@Nzall there's a header then probably, so substract the header size as well
@Arperum apparently you need to substract the header as well but yes
If I just encrypt the alphabet, I get a 64 char string returned
@PrivatePansy holy shit
From the moment I get a string that's longer than 15 chars, the output doubles
Goddammit
