@Yuuki Good point
Once the linear opening part (like 2/3 of the game) was over, it just got tedious.
I like some really linear games and I also like some non-linear games. Typically it's harder for me to enjoy non-linear as it means each individual area has less care put into it, although that depends on the scale
@GnomeSlice I honestly paid so little attention to it that I don't even remember why I hated it.
Whoa, Oculus Rift pre-orders start on Wednesday
You should give it another chance
18:01
No I shouldn't.
I trust past me.
Something like Just Cause 2 was big and I had fun, but I have no desire to play 3 ever.
I'm not even kidding when I said I hated it.
It was anti-fun.
@twobugs Why's that? It's so much fun!
18:01
Honestly, some of the best games are linearly-designed. Because they have a tight control over how you experience the game so it's easier to craft a better story.
I mean, they're not always successful, but it's easier.
JC3 has so many performance issues for my dad
I kind of want to play through FF13 again, and that's the linearest game ever.
I already did everything I wanted to do in Just Cause 2. It was basically all unstructured flying around. That's fine, but it's not for me.
@Yuuki Personally I like the games that have a linear suggestion, but you can go "off road" if you want and do whatever.
@GnomeSlice Something something ED joke.
18:02
As long as the linearity is coupled with a good storyline
@GnomeSlice Is he playing the console version? I heard they got stuck with a horrible port
Whoo, Steam Sale over! Now to not touch my discovery queue until the next one rolls around!
@twobugs PC
I'm still mad Sony ended their dumb sale early so I couldn't impulse buy a few things
@GnomeSlice Weird, I heard the PC version was supposed to run super well.
18:04
not for him
I had a pile of those sale cards. They got a shiny nickel each on the market.
he is on AMD though
and they had a launch problem with that
@MadMAxJr Hey, they'll buy me a ton of cards for games I care about
I had to turn my JC3 graphics waaay down and decrease the resolution, but the gameplay was so much fun I didn't even care
18:05
Oculus Rift Preorder
Also, I'm probably going to be getting a new computer soon
One of my two graphics cards died a while back, and the other one occasionally crashes, so I'm worried it's going to die soon, too
So I'm keeping an eye out for good deals on computer parts

Q: When are attacks/defenses no long able to be shared

PythonMasterFor example, assume my attack and defense log is full and I am still in my current season (about mid-way). Some of my attacks/defenses are still able to be shared with my clan while others cannot be shared. This excludes attacks/defenses that can be replayed by me but cannot be shared with the cl...

I'm replacing my ram. ran memtest overnight. at 64% completion of all tests, I had over 5000 errors and of tests completed, 2% were successful.
Download some new ram!
@Yuuki You're a monster
18:09
@MadMAxJr wow. that is advanced fail
@TimStone I don't know if Planetary Horizons has made things better, but ED had very little depth when I stopped playing.
Planet landings are pretty cool. It's becoming more cohesive, but there is still work to be done.
@MadMAxJr I'm actually kind of impressed. I've never seen memory fail to that degree
I'm suprised it even booted.
Thankfully Corsair has a lifetime warranty.
Haha, some fashion company used Lightning from FF13 as a model apparently
18:13
And they don't require proof of purchase.
Welcome to 2016
Hell if you just put 'failed memtest' as the reason for filing an RMA, it's auto-approved and you get a shipping label.
@TimStone Two full-price expansions later and there might be a full game?
The only company I've seen do better than that was G.Skill who shipped me new ram sticks while the faulty ones were still being shipped to them.
I mean...Destiny shrugs
18:15
At least there's already a game for Elite. Star Citizen? Best $100 million ever swindled.
That's kinda what turned me off. They clearly weren't finished with ED at the beginning and then they throw out a full-price xpac.
@twobugs Hmm, I should probably play the Alpha to see where that's at
Star Citizen is getting there, little by little. It's not quite vaporware yet.
@MadMAxJr Good to know
Considering I backed it for so much
18:16
There were people who seriously pulled money out of their savings to back Star Citizen, and that scares me.
Elite would have been the much better option had I known about it, since I could have gotten all of the expansions for free (which would have worked out better in my favour)
@MadMAxJr Funny, G.Skill and Corsair are the only two companies I'll buy ram from.. guess I backed the right horses
Jeez. I just threw money for a constellation at Star Citizens Kickstarter. I did not throw extra money at it since.
@twobugs ...I was not that stupid, whew.
Star Citizen is going to be huge.
18:17
Meanwhile I have a friend in new york hyping over his non-existent space yacht and freighter hulls
"Now son, you don't have a college fun like the other kids... but you do have this deed for an imaginary space ship in Star Citizen which I'm sure will be out sometime soon" - Quote from a 2025 Father-Son conversation
And they are developing it in a different fashion than elite
Yes I use developing for elite
Since elite is slated to be huger
@Yuuki Oh lovely. It wasn't too long ago that some burger chain (forget which one) found out that a large portion of their "beef" was actually horsemeat.
18:19
@MadMAxJr Oh good, we are equal-parts irresponsible then
Oh, sorry, no. I threw $10 extra to get my shiny metal Admiral business card.
@Yuuki why is the country of origin important again?
@Ohnana Diseases are usually localized.
@Ohnana Because some countries have no ethics and will pass off other animals as beef.
and diseases as well
@TimS. bk
18:20
wouldn't improving screening and quality checks be a better solution?
@MadMAxJr I have this too >_>;
@ardaozkal Ah that was it
@Ohnana Yes, but it's impossible to test every piece of meat
I mean, I can't make fun of people too much because I threw $250 at the Pillars of Eternity Kickstarter. But at least I got a game out of that!
And a box! Signed by people!
If they can start getting Squadron 42 off the ground this year, I'll be happy with my payment.
@twobugs wat
18:22
> Despite an aggressive push by the food industry, lawmakers decided not to add language that would have blocked mandatory labeling of genetically modified ingredients.
Err, but that's something to care less about? >_>
Some people care
Wait
@Ohnana Exactly how many inspectors do you think the US has?
They didn't block mandatory labeling
Clue: it's not a lot.
18:23
I'm against the whole GMO labeling thing because it's generally being used by anti-GMO types as the early part of their "ban GMO" campaign
So my steak can be coming from literally China but at least I'll know it's not gmo
@Yuuki that's a problem
@badp Yeah, the decision to mandate the labeling is up for review in a few months
@twobugs that too
so that means they are not forbidden to reveal that information
18:23
So they didn't preemptively try and force the outcome of that process
@Ohnana Indeed it is. But with all the anti-government going on, nobody wants to hire more inspectors.
"why do you not want to label it?!" because it's literally just corn and you'll take the opportunity to be a hysterical idiot
Plus there's so much misinformation about what GMO means and the health effects (i.e. science has consistently shown there are no negative effects from eating GMO food)
They are allowed to label their product as containing that stuff
@twobugs Silly Chipotle
18:24
@twobugs That depends a lot on how it's modified though
But I agree on the tons of propaganda/misinformation
I hate that about Chipotle, but I will still eat there because I am a sucker for burritos.
@twobugs Hahaha same here
Basically IMO we should have significant independent testing for anything that would be consumed on a major scale. Then you get into the question of who pays for this testing and honestly I don't know, I'm just some jerk on the internet.
@badp They won't, of course. The relevance is that regulatory agencies can still decide to force them to do so, instead of the law saying regulatory agencies are not allowed to force them.
Many do if they are not gmo
Most even
18:26
But from my understanding right now GMO foods are under stricter regulations than "organic" which is a very nebulous label
@Yuuki I'm actually super confused why Pat Roberts was for this action, what about "'MURICA"?
@twobugs i was on cooking.se and someone called a food "biological"
turns out that's another word for "organic"
Now your beef could be from Mexico, and you won't get your daily dose of American freedom straight to the arteries.
i was so confused. what the fck else is that food then
Exit rooooooow

Q: Minecraft (from alpha to 1.8.8) throws EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) right after launching the game

MrPinguSo, my pc recently broke and I needed to get new hardware pieces really fast and for a very low price, then I got this: OS: Windows 7 Ultimate CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz RAM: 2GB DDR Graphics: SiS 661fx (64MB shared) I know it's really outdated and slow, but it works for alpha ...

Q: Can I select the nearest quest to my location in my Pip-Boy?

AnthonyBlakeI've gone wandering through wasteland finding and pursuing various side missions, and have found myself in the top right corner of the map. When selecting a quest in my Pip-Boy is there a way to select the nearest one to me, as most of them are way back in the middle of the map?

0
Q: Can I select the main mission in my Pip-Boy?

AnthonyBlakeI have been pursuing various side missions and want to get back on track and play the main mission or main story, whatever you want to call it. Is there a way to tell which is the main story in quests on my Pip-Boy?

Wubalubadubdub
Furthermore there is a limited amount of viable farm land on the Earth and organic yields are necessarily lower. Using land for organic food drives up the cost of food for everyone else and it's basically a first world middle class or higher luxury.
@Unionhawk if the plane crashes everyone's lives are in your hands
enjoy your leg room.
In conclusion: I'm going to stop thinking about this and go play video games.
2
18:28
Dude, I was a divemaster. I think I can handle that risk and responsibility
> think
@Unionhawk wow that's impressive
@Unionhawk With or without the Zora's scale?
@twobugs Although TBH we're not anywhere near a shortage of food, we're just assholes and don't distribute it to end hunger
Yep, although we don't really know for sure what the Earth's carrying capacity is. It's something we will need to think about in the coming centuries
18:30
We aren't even close to it, whatever it might be
Some of the lower estimates place us at or above the carrying capacity, but those are pretty extreme.
Now if you want everyone to eat meat more than a few times a month that might be a problem
I think most middle of the road estimates place it around 20 billion? And yeah - meat is not sustainable sadly
Universe is circulative
...but still, we're gonna run out of oil much faster than food
18:32
Solution: cars that run on hamburgers
Sounds like a good WB question: Whats the max pop the Earth can sustain with current tech?
Wait that makes the meat situation worse
Better solution: vegan cars
Betterer solution: instant free teleportation
Carrying capacity refers to the maximum sustainable population level, not a weight.
@twobugs those goddamn thermodynamic cops get in the way
Veganism confuses me. If you can't eat proper fried rice (due to lack of egg), what kind of life are you really living?
18:34
oooooooooooooh
@twobugs TIL
@TimStone that sounds pretty disgusting
@ardaozkal Damnit I was reading that :P
I hope we can find sustainable ways to create tasty meat en masse (and without cruelty) but I'm not holding my breath
but still. Life without risotto is hardly a life worth living.
@James you can read the considerably stupid post here: chat.stackexchange.com/messages/26592990/history
18:35
@badp risotto is terrible and you are terrible for suggesting it
It wasn't stupid, just not familiar with a biological term
@twobugs We are over it.
@twobugs yeah.
I've never had risotto.
I am so sorry you are so thoroughly wrong, @GodEmperorDune
@twobugs We have the tech, we just need to make it cost-efficient now.
18:37
Risotto is very good and you should apologize to everyone @GodEmperorDune
It sounds good, though.
Butternut Squash Risotto is my jam
Heard on the radio that artificial beef has been made and it was actually pretty tasty. But super-expensive.
The real criminals are those who gave @GodEmperorDune terrible risotto
@StrixVaria even just saffron risotto is good enough
@twobugs nope, risotto is just sour rice
18:38
@Yuuki I read it on a mag or smth, yeah, that is real afaik.
@Yuuki Oh neat. I'd heard they were working on it, I didn't know there was some success. That's great
@GodEmperorDune Rice is really good, and sour things can be good, so I'm not sold that this is a bad thing.
@GodEmperorDune yes if you use butter from 1684 results might be suboptimal
hmmm cottage pie for dinner \o/
18:38
also risotto is a pain in the ass to cook and not worth the effort
Sony store is back up and still displaying the sale prices, but it won't let me add anything to my cart
DAMNIT SONY
I do hear it's quite annoying to make, I sure don't feel up to the task
Really? I've made Risotto before and it was pretty simple
regular rice is add fluid and walk away
We've already established that I'm extremely good at everything, but especially video games
18:40
Our consumer-end technology didn't change that much in the last few years, they just got more powerful... but the research level technology is crazy. We can create a world like jetsons, but it wouldn't be cheap to make nor maintain. People wouldn't get to that mindset easily too.
Regular rice is good maybe when you're sick
risotto is add fluid, stir until it absorbs, add more, stir more, until the end
Add tomato sauce and it can be okay on a normal day too
i'll take pasta any day over risotto
You're forgetting the wine and the onion and probably other things too
18:41
yes, the fluid preparation is a bit intense
Meat broth if you're hardcore
I forget exactly the specific kind
but most fancy things require sauteing garlic and onions and whatnot
the babysit the rice while it absorbs small amounts of fluid is specific to risotto
Eh, we usually skip garlic whenever possible
18:43
what kind of italian avoids garlic?
"We" as in our family
The kind that really minds what garlic does to your breath
but it improves the taste of most things exponentially
I don't care too much but it drives my family up the wall
18:46
i mean too much garlic can kind of be a mess
i knew this one guy in college who lived on kimchi
and basically exuded garlic from every pore
but that's an extreme case
I just had this awesome idea... it's called going home early.
@ardaozkal ...isn't Ricochet a Valve game? Since when has Valve ever created a Doraemon game?
@Powerlord ricochet 2 is a meme
@GodEmperorDune that is the easiest thing to do
heat oil. put raw thing in pan. stir. raw thing is now cooked thing
@Ohnana yes, which i why i focused my complaints on the subsequent steps
11 mins ago, by GodEmperorDune
the babysit the rice while it absorbs small amounts of fluid is specific to risotto
18:53
Speaking of raw things to cooked things, I forgot to buy Subnautica in the Steam sale. Whoops.
Nearly there!
So, according to my calendar, I have a 2.5 hour meeting that starts 30 mins from now.
@Powerlord good luck
Slight problem: I forgot to bring in a pillow.
@Powerlord lifehacks.se
18:58
@GodEmperorDune Are you saying I should ask a question on lifehacks for what I can use to substitute for a pillow for when I fall asleep during a meeting?
@Powerlord yes
do it
that is exactly what i am saying
i want to see the insanity they come up with
@Powerlord The shoulder of the person sitting next to you makes for interesting watercooler discussion later on.
19:00
On another subject, the only DB dev in our office is leaving for a new job in two weeks. Us C# and Java devs aren't supposed to touch the stored procedures and triggers. Stored procedures are mandated for all operations for security reasons.
This is going to be fun...
@Powerlord uh oh
@Powerlord lifehacks.se
@Ohnana On the bright side, maybe we can convince management to let us just do SQL queries directly. Somehow I doubt that, though.
@Powerlord lol no
<cough>so stored proceedures should stop you doing somehting bad right?
19:04
@Powerlord security.se called, they said that they cringed.
not deliberately bad, but accidently bad?
@djsmiley2k Of course. Because we've never had issues where there were bugs in them or anything!
right
just checking, because pretty sure that's what I suggested to my ex-employeers
I mean, it's not like we had a stored proc that had a VARCHAR sized 1/8 of the size of the DB column it represented and all input to it was being truncated.
@Powerlord :hamstare:
19:05
password was 1 char long? :@D
@djsmiley2k I forget which field it was. I know I pointed it out to the DB Dev who promptly fixed it on our dev DB, but never made a script for it to be pushed to UAT or Production.
So, those remained broken for some time.
Our DB Devs (there were originally 2 of them) also designed the app I currently work on to use Oracle User Defined Types, which adds to the "fun"
lols ;)
well, if you decide to employ any good sysadmins who can maybe help with that
give a shout
I really need to update my CV as it's tech lacking atm
@Powerlord hire fredley
no hire me
Yeah hire djsmiley2k
He says that he is bad at games, but he is awesome. If he says that he is a good sysadmin, he must be the best!
19:09
ty
I've seen the code on both sides of this app, why would you ever want to work on this?!
I'm currently playing FFVII
Speaking of admins, I need to bug our Oracle DBA again and ask her to copy the MapViewer tables over from old test to new test.
dbs are hell in earth.
@ardaozkal Well, this is an Oracle Spatial DB and our application is based on Oracle MapViewer. Whose tables are missing on our new Dev DB server.
I have no idea why that data wasn't copied over.
(Well, not missing... just not populated)
19:17
@GnomeSlice though some time has passed, thanks for your suggestion! It's on my wishlist! :)
@Powerlord its not like you need data to develop in dev... just base it on the schema!
that moment when you realise you've forgotten wtf you were meant to be doing in FFVII :
I just left kalm
@djsmiley2k well kalm is before the storm, so
/me facepalms
hehehe, @uni is in flight and can't tell me to GTFO
19:19
@GodEmperorDune Part of my job last week was to make sure that the application was running properly on the new dev server. Clearly it isn't since MapViewer just tosses 500 Internal Server Error because its data is missing.
oh yes chocobo
More accurately, the code attempting to create the MapViewer object tosses an exception which causes the 500 Internal Server Error, but...
@Powerlord well yeah
11 mins ago, by ardaozkal
dbs are hell in earth.
@ardaozkal dbs are very powerful when used correctly
19:23
I'm tempted to modify this code to toss an error back to users saying "MapViewer done f'ed up" instead of just showing an error page.
@Powerlord "PC load letter"
@GodEmperorDune What the f' does that mean?!
@ardaozkal i've seen many a db with a horrible implementation because the devs didn't understand how to use a database
oh fu chocobo
19:25
@GodEmperorDune You just described me.
like a table with an ID column and a data column, and the data is all xml configurations
@GodEmperorDune Everything goes in one table, there are only 5 columns for data with vague names like "integer1", "string2", etc., and the integer columns FK back to the table's own primary key.
@GodEmperorDune worse:
@ardaozkal lrn2cache or pull what you need appropriately
Step 1 is probably to normalize the db.
19:26
@GodEmperorDune I just forgot to add a delay between calls.
@GodEmperorDune Sounds like the one the company we work with has.
Caching is a very important power that should be used responsibly!
If you don't know what you're doing then you're definitely storing data wrong.
seriously wtf is up with catching chocobos
19:27
the "architects" at a previous company came up with this convoluted way to store xml config data in the DB because they literally did not trust what the DBAs told them to do
Just 13 hours was enough to double my call limit though
@djsmiley2k SO YOU THINK YOU CAN RIDE THIS CHOCOBO
@GodEmperorDune I can't cache. I'm doing a terrible job and sending commands to my app using SQL.
@ardaozkal y u do dis
Well, now I "pull everything I need appropriately": Once every 10 seconds
@GodEmperorDune to make your cringe
19:30
In the grim darkness of the future there is only rate limiting
oohhh I see
I was on free plan

Q: Throwing Knives

FredDiggerI have been trying to recreate this, . I found that it would possible be spinning armor stands but I can't figure out how to do that. Could Some Please Help Me?

So apparently PSN is experiencing an outage. Hopefully this one doesn't last for several months and involve massive infosec breaches.
I just upgraded it and now I can pull commands every seconds without worrying.
ah urgh
wrong type of greens
19:34
@Wipqozn BUY IT FOR ME THEN I WILL

@twobugs That'll explain why I only have 1 friend online
Oh I just saw the part where you said you would've done that

Q: Are there any different endings to Emily Is Away?

IsziI've played the game a few different ways, and so far have not had a lot of variation in the ending. Is there any way to bring the game to a conclusion that's substantially different, particularly with regards to the Player/Emily relationship?

Ugh the new Mistborn book comes out so soon. I have so much other stuff to read, though.
@John If only you spoke up before te sale was over
19:47
my bot hyped way too much for the new xkcd
@StrixVaria It'll probably be medicore anyways, if the last one was any indication
I really wish he just decided to skip this trilogy, and just do that one stand alone novel.
Maybe book 2 will be a lot better, but neither of us really enjoyed book 1 all that much.
@Wipqozn I'll probably not read it right away.
I still just started Locke Lamora 3 and there's another book I already bought that I plan on reading immediately after I finish that.
@StrixVaria I'm not sure when I'll read it. I'll probably finish the three Robin Hobb books I'm reading first.
@Wipqozn You're reading 3 books by the same author in parallel?
@StrixVaria It's a trilogy.
Although I plan to get through all of her books in the same universe this year.
19:50
@Wipqozn That sounds even harder.
@StrixVaria one word at a time
So word 1 book 1, word 1 book 2, word 1 book 3, etc
@StrixVaria I always need to read trilogies together. I just want to get to the next book.
I know a lot of folks break them up, but once I finish one book in a series I move onto the next.
In fact for Robin Hobb she has a few different trilogies all set within the same world. I read the first trilogy this year, and now I'm on the second. I've got two more complete ones to go through, plus one which is currently being written. MY plan is to get through each of them this year, but in-between each trilogy read something else.
After liveship i'll likely do mistborn... after the next trilogy I'll probably do the Dunk & Egg novellas (GRRM / asoiaf)
I prefer to break up trilogies. If I read too much in the same style for too long, I get tired.
@Wipqozn Isn't like a lot of the robin hobb books in the same world?
Anyway, I'm out.
