@GraceNote: So, now that TF2 is free, will you be joining us at some point?
Hasn't TF2 been free for a long time?
(And also didn't I already state we have a copy of Orange Box at home anyway?)
04:21
@GraceNote A few months now.
@GraceNote You also said you had problems with Steam because it's hard to share games over it.
The Orange Box version is basically useless.
I do. I still do have qualms with Steam. That's the obstacle, not price
Unless the PC orange box gets the same updates.
@GnomeSlice No it isn't, it raises your inventory to 300 items (instead of 50) and you can get random hat drops and stuff.
Oh, and free players can't trade items to other people (but can receive items in trades)
Oh. Well, the console Orange Box TF2 is useless. No hats, no drops, no items.
04:22
Granted, it takes a single purchase in the in-game shop to remove all these restrictions, even a $0.49 item, and Steam accepts Paypal...
Ours is a PC Orange Box
@GnomeSlice No arguments there.
That's the only TF2 I've played.
I was terrible.
As I recall, the PS3 version of TF2 had one update, the Xbox 360 version had 3, and the PC version has had 297.
That number isn't random, it was pulled from my server updater... the version for 'Team Fortress 2 Content'
But the fact that I'm horrible at every real-time game I play online suggests that my lousy connection may be more at fault.
04:26
@GnomeSlice As strange as it sounds, certain classes in TF2 sometimes benefit from lousy connections.
Sniper, specifically, because of how the game does lag compensation.
I imagine Sniper ain't one of the...
...or I could be totally wrong
I assume the Heavy is not one of those.
@GnomeSlice That's... questionable.
Figures.
btw, don't EVER play Spy if you have high lag.
04:27
I actually did well as a spy.
Lag compensation doesn't really apply to melee weapons, and your knife if your "primary" weapon as Spy.
And by 'well' I mean... yeah I got a few kills.
Spy is the only class to not have a Primary loadout slot... Secondary (revolvers), Melee (knives), and PDA (cloaking devices) instead.
Guess that explains why stabbing people didn't always work.
Even worse, I use the fake death cloaking device as Spy. That requires split second timing to use it effectively.
04:29
I suppose the Pyro is good for bad connections.
@Powerlord Dead Ringer, right?
@GraceNote Yup.
@Powerlord Not an issue, because that's not in my version.
I just got the default.
To put it in perspective, the other day, I got hit by the very end of a Pyro's flame as I rounded a corner and got "killed" without being set on fire.
...and?
04:30
or was it I activated it as I rounded the corner.
But yeah, cloaked spies can be set on fire, which gives away the illusion of being dead.
They didn't continue shooting you after you'd died?
The thing is, I was disguised as a team member on my team, specifically a Pyro,.
Pyro set on fire = obvious Spy.
Pyros are not flammable, I s'pose
@GraceNote Exactly. They take damage from flames, but they're the only class that doesn't stay on fire.
I shoot people after they die, and the dead ringer isn't even IN my game.
04:32
Anyway, when you're disguised as a friendly class, you drop a fake corpse of said class when "killed"
@Powerlord Ooh, I see
Don't they see the spy standing there over this fake corpse?
@GnomeSlice You're cloaked for about 8 seconds or so afterwards
@GnomeSlice You cloak right away, giving the illusion you've died.
Granted, if anyone is nearby when you decloak, they'll hear it; it's louder than the standard decloak
Also, ' next to enter is evil.
04:34
The obvious solution is to continue shooting people after they die.
@GnomeSlice It also greatly reduces damage taken when you're cloaked.
90% reduction to be exact.
That seems unfair.
@GnomeSlice You can't attack when cloaked.
Still seems unfair.
04:35
And decloaking takes about 2 seconds.
Can't you run away?
Ammo boxes refill your cloak meter even if you're cloaked, but the damage reduction always wears off after 8 seconds.
Plenty of time.
@GnomeSlice Yes, and that's the idea. Spies are also the main reason why teams always need at least one Pyro.
If you know the enemy Spy is using the Dead Ringer, they're quite easy to counter.
04:37
Pyro is good against Spy?
SPYCHECK!
@GnomeSlice pyros can just randomly spout fire
at teammates or empty space
just to see if they happen to catch a cloaked spy on fire
The Dead Ringer has 3 properties important to know. 1. 90% damage reduction when cloaked, but only for 8 seconds. 2. Their outlines don't show when enemies touch them like the other cloaking devices do, but only for 8 seconds. 3. They still can't pass through enemy players.
04:38
which makes his cloak particularly ineffective
Oh, right, you can't hurt teammates.

Can't hurt teammates and you can pass through other teammates.
Eh...
I like the Heavy. He's not complicated.
But yes, the Dead Ringer has its limits. The louder decloak being the major one, unless you have the entire Saharan Spy set, which removes your disguise kit.
04:40
Headed to bed. G'nite all ♪
I still use the Saharan Spy set on Payload defense.
I imagine that if I played TF2, I'd probably gun for Demo. They have a ricochet on their grenade launcher, right?
I think so. I liked DemoMan too.
@GraceNote Standard one yes, Loch n' Load no.
(but Loch n' Load does more damage)
Think I only played Engineer once.
04:42
Well, if there's one thing that Javving it up in Trench Wars taught me, it's that I do well with bank shots.
@GnomeSlice PC version upgraded the Engineer... by making it so Teleporters and Dispensers have 3 levels like Sentry guns do.
Wiping out all of BLU on a Payload map using the YER is quite satisfying.
Never built anything past level 1, I don't think.
@KevinY Been there, done that, got 13 backstabs in one life on Upward doing it. :D
@GnomeSlice If you whack a built building with your wrench, it uses 25 metal to upgrade your building by 25/200 toward the next level.
Yeah. I just don't think I ever did.
Kept dying.
04:44
@GnomeSlice That's a shame, level 3 sentry guns are great defense. They're the reason a lot of maps have a 60 second startup time.
Oh wait, that's right, you only played the console version and its 6 maps.
Eh. I mostly played Heavy.
As opposed to the PC version and its... 52 maps?
And DemoMan.
It has more maps?
@GnomeSlice They've added maps to the game, both maps made by Valve and maps made by community members.
Plus, all the custom maps still in development.
04:46
Community maps? Hmph.
What about racist levels.
@GnomeSlice These are maps Valve thought enough people liked to add them to the game download.
Or penis levels.
Or racist penis levels.
I think some of their choices of maps to add are... questionable, but not that questionable.
I mean, I dislike cp_junction quite a lot, and ctf_turbine isn't exactly my favorite map either.
@Powerlord TURBINE IS THE GREATEST MAP
Except it can get very stally without a 2-Engy limit.
HARVEST EVENT!!!!!!
04:49
I find maps like ctf_doublecross tend to flow better.
ctf_turbine_pro is really good though. Solves all the problems with regular Turbine.
Also, for whatever reason, I like ctf_well, even though no one else seems to.
I remember one that had a bridge. That's about it.
@GnomeSlice ctf_2fort.
Sounds right.
04:50
ctf_doublecross is a newer design rather than reusing an old Team Fortress 1 map... and I think it's better for it.
Now 2Fort is a map I dislike.
I used to stand around dancing as the pyro.
Pissed everyone off. Good times.
Like the name implies, doublecross has two bridges... the wider upper bridge and the narrower lower bridge perpendicular to it. Over a bottomless chasm.
I still think doublecross came about when someone at Valve said "Hey, we should make a better 2fort."
I hated that game.
> This map was originally planned to be 5CP, according to Iikka, the map's creator.
04:53
Furiously.
Double Cross? 5CP? :/
No. TF2.
@GnomeSlice Nah, I was talking about the thing I quoted. I played TF2 on PS3 once. It's horrible.
I hated it.
You really need a mouse for TF2. Particularly for Sniper.
Even if Valve's lag compensation does like giving people headshots around corners.
04:55
The most entertainment I got out of the gane was waving at people as the sniper.
Not dead people. Just everyone.
Speaking of mice, I got a Razer Orochi so now I don't have to play TF2 using this anymore.
@GnomeSlice In the PC version, I can throw a jar of piss at them, whack them with a knife, THEN laugh at them.
Oh, and that's still as Sniper.
Admittedly, that was pretty entertaining.
Admittedly, the laugh taunt costs money. :/
Who said anything about laughing? I just liked waving at people.
04:57
Well, the Schadenfreude taunt does anyway.
Well, if I have the bow equipped, I can't do the wave taunt any more.
Instead, it does a stab with the arrow.
Then what's the point?
@Powerlord Noooo not the Huntsman
@KevinY You have a problem with the Head Magnet... er... I mean Huntsman?

Q: How does inFamous 2 decide if you were good or evil in the previous game?

EnderThe way I understand it, is that it takes the information from your accumulated trophies, but what if I've beaten inFamous-1 as both evil and good and have both of the relavent trophies for doing so? How does it decide then?

@Powerlord So true, so true.
Oh. I get it.
That comic needs another frame with the Sniper right next to the Heavy, with the Heavy consisting only of a head.
@KevinY I've mentioned this before, but at very close range, you could fire the Huntsman straight down and still headshot an enemy directly in front of you.
05:02
Is it that unfair?
Because it fires from your had level.
Which is why I hate the Huntsman. Especially when my favourite map is Turbine, where it's common to find Huntsman-ers camping the vents.
@GnomeSlice TF2 has all sorts of... interesting issues. please don't ask about facestabs please don't ask about facestabs
Sounds like it.
Anyway, I'll explain about facestabs anyway... it's possible, as a Spy, to be so close to an enemy that stabbing them in the front will count as hitting the back of their hitbox, and result in an instant kill.
05:04
I knew you wanted me to ask about them.
Also, lol.
Well, it should.
However, it's not a good tactic to try, because smart people will use their non-melee weapons to kill you.
Also failstabs, where you clearly backstab someone but it only counts as a regular melee hit.
As it is, Spies can hit you from behind within an 180 degree cone to instantly kill you.
@KevinY Which is the flip side of the same coin.
Turns out it works both directions!
@KevinY is that the opposite? Lol...
Yup.
05:07
Well, it can be annoying, since Spies lose their disguise on stabs, doubly so for Your Eternal Reward spies whose backstabs are silent.
The YER removes your disguise kit and instead steals the identity of whomever you stab.
It works absurdly well in some circumstances. Like KevinY said earlier, you can sometimes clear an entire team if they aren't paying attention.
How do you get the first guy?
@GnomeSlice Cloaking devices.
I thought you said..,
Oh.
Payload is a gametype not present in the console version, but basically the BLU team pushes a cart toward the RED team's spawn... but it only moves so fast.
Does it take their username too? Or just the disguise.
05:09
Well, as a YER Spy, you can sometimes chain stab all the people pushing the cart, and since the stabs are silent and corpses vanish...
@GnomeSlice Yes! :D
What. And no bodies?
@GnomeSlice Basically, the corpses cloak. :D
That seems very unfair.
Actually, any kill with the YER causes the corpse to cloak, which I find a bit off.
@GnomeSlice Yes, but the first kill is really hard to kill, because anyone behind you will see you're an enemy Spy.
Experienced teams/players will always have at least one person watching behind.
But youre cloaked
05:11
They should anyway, since even a normal Spy can get off 1 or 2 kills.
@GnomeSlice You can't attack while cloaked.
You must decloak (which takes like 2 seconds) before you can use your knife, sapper, or gun.
Oh, and decloaking does make noise.
YER with the fake death cloaking device is one of the harder combos to pull off, but if you can do it convincingly or without being spotted, you can have a field day with it.
I don't get it, would chain stabs with that thing just look like people vanishing from a team?
@GnomeSlice Pretty much.
@GnomeSlice Yup, unless the other team members look back or watch the numbers on the cart display (for payload) they may not notice until it's too late.
Can you see the spy every time he stabs someone?
@GnomeSlice The corpse does stick around for a second, and if the Spy misses a backstab, players may hear the knife sound.
The worst thing is when someone backs up at an angle away from the Spy as they stab.
05:16
The Heavy has a really big gun. I like the Heavy.
Whoops, missed stab plus they saw you, you're pretty much dead.
TF2 has three Glass Cannons: Scout, Sniper, and Spy. Not sure I'd include Engineer.
You'll have to explain that. I'm on my phone.
High damage (like a cannon), but low survivability (like glass).
I see.
They have two other types on that site. Heavy is definitely a Mighty Glacier... which is high attack and defense, but low speed.
05:21
Do people spam the medic call on the PC too?
@Powerlord Huh, that's a new term for me.
@GnomeSlice Sometimes.
@GnomeSlice Server limits how often they can call it these days.
It's still like once every three seconds or so, though.
Lol. click the right stick on the xbox to call.
Oh, and if you're playing Medic, little pop ups appear on your display indicating the direction of people calling for Medics... including enemy Spies disguised as your team.
clickclickclickclickclickclick
05:24
It's the E key by default on the PC... or Z 1, but who would hit Z 1 when it's bound to the key right next to move forward?
Gosh darn those silly people!
Oh yeah, you have additional voice commands in the PC version. Some people like playing Scout and spamming "Build a Dispenser here."
@Powerlord :D
I certainly don't have a bind that cycles through "Need a [dispenser/sentry/teleporter] here!"...
Recently, they made it if you have a melee weapon equipped, face an enemy player, and hit the Battle Cry voice command, it'll do melee dare voice commands instead.
Along the lines of 'lets punch it out'?
Wow. It's late.
05:34
@GnomeSlice I can't think of any specifically, but I think they were unused voice clips that were added to the game in the various class updates over the years.
Valve did a lot recently to actually use those.
I still can't say I've ever heard the Heavy's "Uh oh, someone's building diaper changing station!" quote.
I assume it's supposed to play when a Heavy destroys a Dispenser.
Oh, but the Spy's "I murdered your toys as well!" line is working now if you kill an Engineer and his stuff. :D

@IanPugsley It's still the only one I can use
@GnomeSlice You horrible person.
@KevinY Meh, typically scouts and spies stop function normally on this map and stop killing the enemy medics; the enemy team can then easily group by the lower entrance of your int room and just charge uber after uber after uber after uber to eventually take down your shit and force cap anyway
then they'll camp your flag room as the engies are the only person who are actually defending, and they're going after rocket and demoman spam
and capture crits
@KevinY Nah, it isn't too bad. Unlike other maps, such as Mach4, it doesn't have two or three obviously good sentry placements (a sentry in the flag room is just a bad idea, but there's no place where you can't be easily spammed)
Obviously the fact that 99% of the time you're playing it on a 24/7 server where people just DM instead of playing and half the teams are bots anyway doesn't help
@Powerlord Doublecross makes it kind of too easy to build a base in the enemy sewers. Certainly, the drop down by the flag room helps in this regard, and you can even put a sentry above to send fire down... but it's a tricky proposition. I think it ends up being stalier than other CTF maps.
One pyro can bring his intelligence from the bridge to his flag room rather easily.
