@Arperum smell-o-vision?
whats the 'description' for it?
@Yuuki They tried that. Built a movie studio. Spirits Within had a big budget, decent voice actors.. Oh. Japanese style plot to American audience. Tanked. CLOSE STUDIO. NEVER DO THIS AGAIN.
See also: the plot from FFXIII.
@MadMAxJr Oh yeah, every time I'm reminded of Spirits Within, my mind just automatically releases canisters of mind bleach and I forget it ever existed.
It was mostly the Japanese-style plot that ruined it for Western audiences. I watched it when I was younger and didn't know too much about the culture.
I'm at least somewhat sure that if I watched today, I might like it better.
I know I watched Spirits Within. That's all I remember about it, though.
14:09
I certainly didn't hate Spirits Within when I saw it. It was more of a "meh" movie.
morning bridge
Spirits Within was a technical marvel at the time. They just needed to tell a story better suited to the target market.
What should Squeenix do with their crazy good CG then? Can't make good movies and the games haven't been too hot lately either.
The new X-Men thing is bringing back the most useless mutant ever: Jubilee.
The thing I remember about Spirits Within is that the girl's hair took something like 50% of the CPU cycles to render. Which is why everyone else had crew cuts.
14:12
They should team up with Blizzard and make epic Squenibliz CGI epics.
@MadMAxJr Warcraft movie is dropping next year, I believe.
Or this summer. I can't recall.
I hope knowing the plot to WoW isn't essential to that.
I stopped at WC3.
@StrixVaria I want to bring up a point but I can't think of a more useless mutant power off the top of my head.
Hmm... there was that one guy who had two slugs instead of a digestive system.
But I'm not sure if his powers developed and became more useful later.
Maggott (Japheth), is a Marvel Comics superhero who was briefly a member of the X-Men. Created by writer Scott Lobdell and Joe Madureira, he first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #345 (June 1997). A flamboyant South African mutant who spoke in exaggerated Afrikaans slang, Maggott was advertised as one of the strangest X-Men. His digestive system took the form of two slugs which could eat through practically any substance. After feeding, the slugs reentered Maggott's abdomen and passed nourishment into him, giving him incredible power. == Fictional character biography == Maggott was first seen a...
> His digestive system took the form of two slugs which could eat through practically any substance. After feeding, the slugs reentered Maggott's abdomen and passed nourishment into him, giving him incredible power.
Ah, never mind. They could eat anything and make him stronger.
eating anything is pretty awesome
pointless powers, gawd theres so many and I can't remember any
silver surfer always made me laugh
Which is why I disqualified him from "most useless mutant".
14:16
'he can fly and invincable'
'but has no thoughts of his own'
@djsmiley2k He has some other powers, but they're not terrible well-expanded.
The Power Cosmic is weird.
it's a catch all
deus ex machina
'how did he....' - power cosmic.
Also functions as Diabolus Ex Machina!
@StrixVaria she had fireworks power, right?
Since it's Galactus's thing.
14:18
The guy on the skittles advert.
@GodEmperorDune Yeah.
Dazzler? She has pretty much the same powers as Jubilee.
@Yuuki erm, explain?
Beast?
Then again, I think they had some kind of mind-altering property.
@djsmiley2k It's not entirely clear to me, but it sounds like a horrible version of black/death combined with things that don't sound like I like them.
14:20
@GnomeSlice calandar man is not a marvel mutant
@djsmiley2k Diabolus ex machina is the opposite of deus ex machina. Rather than unlikely events falling into place to save the protagonist from an impossible situation, unlikely events conspire to make the protagonist's life worse.
@GodEmperorDune oh right
'mutant power'
nevermind
Wtf wikiwand?
14:21
Calendar Man is a successful inventor, capable of designing the machinery needed to deploy his various schemes.
plus that damn wikiwand is not letting me read the article, just popping up some bs ad
not a super power, but useful at least.
@GodEmperorDune it let me mouse over to the article
idk what you guys are talking about
@GnomeSlice you have the toolbar or w/e installed, we don't
There's no toolbar
There's just an extension that automatically sends you to wikiwand instead of wikipedia.
14:22
Wikiwand now has a more annoying thing than Wikipedia.
Clicking that article sent me to a page that was all, "Dude, Wikiwand is totally more awesome than Wikipedia! Look at this comparison thing!"
lol check hush.
@Yuuki same for me
wow that's dumb
@Yuuki Same for me, which is why I took a screenshot =p
is this wikipedias new begging for money thing?
14:24
@djsmiley2k Wikiwand != Wikipedia.
k
didn't know if they'd finally lost it
Think Bing back when Bing copied Google's search results.
gah. I want to go close the door but Pixel is asleep on my lap.
@Rapitor i looked at this and immediately thought banjo-kazooie
14:26
@GodEmperorDune that's exactly what they are doing/going for. a spiritual successor.
@Rapitor excellent, well done then
@Rapitor So it's Banjo-Kazooie.
@Rapitor Hmm, byline from Nintendo Life suggests it's at least going to be on the Wii U?
@Yuuki their kickstarter (...) is launching today, that will probably have the platforms they are targeting.
I only made a cursory inspection of the site, so who's Yooka and who's Laylee?
Is Laylee the bat and Yooka the chameleon?
@Yuuki i'd guess so, based on color scheme of the title
@MadMAxJr That happens when a movie plot is awful
@Yuuki This would hold if it's literally Banjo-Kazooie.
I really don't like those character designs.
I really loved Banjo-Kazooie, though, so we'll have to see if the gameplay seems to outweigh that.
@fredley what is broken age a successor to?
@badp Huh, apparently the market decided that the Indonesian Rupiah, which is trading in the real world at 13k:1 USD is actually worth 1:1 USD
14:38
@Rapitor Monkey Island et al.
Which caused the market to go into meltdown after a few player noticed they could vacuum up everything for pennies
Calendar Man was probably the most annoying part of Batman: Arkham City.
'cause you have to visit him on like 20 different holidays over the year.
(or change your system clock)
Hellooooooo Batman. I hope you like this game, because to get 100% you'll be here all-HEY WHY ARE YOU CHANGING THE CLOCK?
Granted, it's nowhere near market-efficient yet, but the fact that they've done it (and proved that the enzyme can be produced more efficiently) is awesome.
@Yuuki how long until human trials?
This is big if this is real
@fredley Well, it seems they've already tested it on human blood.
Not sure if they did any transfusions with the converted blood though.
@Yuuki sure it doesn't just change the blood to type eh?
Yeah, doing the testing on human blood isn't a big deal =p
15:00
@GodEmperorDune lol

Q: Are you invulnerable during a Killstreak in Call of Duty Ghosts?

FrontEndI've been trying out some of the killstreaks on COD Ghosts and was surprised that I've never been killed while using them yet. I'm not sure if this is pure luck or a game mechanic. For example when aiming the Trinity Rocket or when in control of the Gryphon is it still possible for other players ...

Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh
FUCK
That is all
15:11
Hmm burning copper
@KevinvanderVelden Trimethyl borate. So no copper.
Boron and copper both burn green
Yes
That is why I assumed copper
@KevinvanderVelden In the middle of reading Alloy of Law and I didn't understand what you were talking about for a second.
15:14
@StrixVaria Heh, well fortunately we have nothing to hide here, right?
Eugh, so the two storylines in Fire Emblem If will actually be on separate carts.
><
YOU'RE ON SEPARATE CARTS
user15026
Aw, boo. I am 33 cents short of Google Play credit for the new Kairosoft game.

From now on when I see ITG questions I'm going to just straight up delete instead of closing.
To prevent that wishy-washy nonsense where someone answers in the comments and then a screenshot is retroactively edited into the post.
user15026
@yuuki I have seen those before and I love them so so so so much.
@Yuuki those are the best
15:29
Yeah, no, mod deletion is like the opposite end of the spectrum from wishy-washy
user15026
@StrixVaria if it is on a not-new user, perhaps a comment telling them why might be good, just to prevent inevitable whining meta?
user15026
Like more than 1 Rep driveby
@AshleyNunn Sure.
Cat butt coasters are on back order. This is an emerging market I need to get in on. https://www.etsy.com/shop/hooksandballs?ref=l2-shopheader-name&source=aw&utm_source=affiliate_window&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=us_location_buyer&utm_content=85386 http://t.co/PzGtU5JAjO
What
user15026
15:32
@unionhawk my mom has cat butt magnets but they are better done than those coasters. Still weird though.
@AshleyNunn do them surveys
user15026
@Rapitor Yeah I am waiting for a new survey so I can get the credit I need for it.
Ugh why is wired so goddamn broken on chrome
@AshleyNunn I fall into this problem with that google survey app. Always like a dime short of something.

Q: Is it possible to continue a "flash-games-setion" on a different computer?

SwitchSituatuon: I'm currently playing a flash-game (Mardek RPG chapter 3) and I found it pretty long. I've done quite a lot of progress on a computer that's "not mine" (it belongs to my relatives), and now I want to continue playing this setion in my computer. Note: I'm playing it off-line. So the sa...

user15026
@MadMAxJr Yeah, it is frustrating they don't let you split the payment.
@AshleyNunn you have different wallets?
The google surveys app goes explicitly into play store credit, not wallet
right, but it pull sfrom that first, then your wallet (if it has funds)
15:38
No it doesn't
It won't use the credit unless the credit can pay for the whole thing
All my attempts to not pronounce dict as dick has ended in failure in Python class
hm, can't really science it cuz i've been overloaded with surveys and have like 30$ in credit... I could've sworn I bought GP story that way
@PrivatePansy just say dictionary
@Unionhawk I only recently learned how to use spacebar
Gr someone suggested a bad edit that got approved and I have no way of pinging the editor or either approver.
15:40
I just clicked on the thing like "this could be neat" then meh
It was a tag edit and they clearly didn't even read the tag wiki
user15026
@Rapitor nope. Not possible. If you try, it just pulls from whatever isn't the credit.
> The Mysterious Library is a map, not a mod.
> Questions about custom maps... fall under this tag.
well then.
grrr
15:41
@KevinvanderVelden But it's so loooooooooong
> - Grace Note 2011
Heh
Comixology is running a refer a friend program - if any of you don't have a Comixology account and want to buy some comics, I can get you $5 off your first purchase. (Actually, anyone with a Comixology account should be able to - I know there are others here.)
@Unionhawk Hm?
Grace Note is responsible for that tag wiki. Fun fact.
Oh, cool.
I feel extra right, now.
It's kind of telling that when the writers for Steven Universe decided to put a reference to the show itself in the form of a TV show in the TV show, they decided to name it Crying Breakfast Friends
All right, I must leave you, but I leave you with the song of my people
@Yuuki yay vinesauce
I must be the worst GTA 5 player. I've been fairly entertained just driving around, usually following traffic rules, stopping at lights, and just admiring the quality of the simulation.
Though I am greatly amused by the Taxi AI challenges
Holy shit last day of semester let's gooooooooo
@MadMAxJr Well... I did that for a while in L.A. Noire
In fact, I only turned on the siren in that game when I was actually radioed about a crime in progress.
@MadMAxJr that's generally the part of GTA games I enjoy most as well.
Granted, when I got tired of driving around the city, I started making my partner drive.
15:58
I don't much care for just running around being a maniac. I like just driving
I was amused to have Michael visit his therapist and when asked about 'relapse' it was accurate about what I had been doing. Stole a car, no drugs, sex or non-required violence.
Vet day
Last week of work! I'm getting fired! Oh god, I'm so excited!
?
@MadMAxJr I like to do that in Just Cause 2
Wasn't there a survey that showed that the large majority of players, when given a choice between good & evil actions, choose good (at least for their first playthrough of a game).
16:04
Driving down the highway in a tank blowing away ever car you see is fun too
And running over cyclists
Also tying jets taking off to trees

You're playing the wrong game kid
@fredley Somehow, I don't believe you.
16:12
@AshleyNunn are you available?
okay that could be interpreted in various ways
@AshleyNunn are you around and available for a bit of help? :P
O god
If I die taking this exam, I leave all my rep to @KevinvanderVelden
2
@Chippies I can't tell if the emoticon makes it better or worse.
@Yuuki definitely worse, but the added text should remedy that
actually it probably doesn't, which is why she's not replying
How about "I need your help, @AshleyNunn, you're my only hope", complete with holograms and astromech droids?
"Help me <x>, you're my only hope." Sheesh.
16:20
can anyone have a look at my resume image link) and help improve it? Mostly the "Skills" part, because it's a mess
@Chippies Asked here, you are mostly likely to receive help on lying on your resume.
@JasonBerkan that's how you get a job these days though, right?
@Chippies That, and nepotism.
user15026
@chippies what do you need?

can anyone have a look at my resume image link) and help improve it? Mostly the "Skills" part, because it's a mess
user15026
16:22
Sure, let me get to my desk, so I can look at it properly.
Awesome, thanks!
Gander? Crap, you are out in the middle of nowhere.
@Chippies Use not-default fonts
@Chippies Remove 'Fast learner'
Ok
List the versions of Office you used. (year stamps)
If you worked with excel macros, list that, noting if any of them were complex.
user15026
@MadMAxJr Eeeergh, I wouldn't go into that much detail on a resume
16:24
@Chippies So what you want to do for the skills section is be a little bit more verbose
Would not recommend 'Experienced at finding information online'
@fredley any recommendations for this?
Qualify what you're saying with exampled
E.g., don't say 'Good Office Skills', say 'Have used Excel to model X, using Pivot Tables and custom macros'
@MadMAxJr it is a useful skill nowadays that many lack, but the wording on it is bad
@AshleyNunn I would (and do).
16:25
Much more informative
user15026
For the skills section - show, don't tell.
@AshleyNunn Yeah, this
user15026
@JasonBerkan It depends, if you're going to list every incarnation ever, that's too much
user15026
something like "up to version x" would work
Pick the best example that demonstrates each skill and talk about that, don't just list the skill
16:26
@AshleyNunn Yeah, I guess I don't get into version numbers, but I do have a table of all software and computer languages I have experience with.
And cut 1,2,3,4 and 8 altogether
anyone can write that stuff and it's pretty meaningless
Perhaps loosely list the kinds of projects you were contracted for.
user15026
@Chippies link these things to the jobs you've held - just listing the jobs isn't enough. What skills did you get there? What were you good at, and how? For example, I say on my call center one that I handled calls 25% faster than average, because that is a measurable metric that I can prove that shows I am good at it
Also for experience, write a line or two about what you actually did at each place.
@Chippies - Your experience should list some information of what you did on each job.
16:27
@fredley that's what I was thinking, but wife insisted it looked empty otherwise. Removed
@JasonBerkan This right here 100%
@Chippies Yeah, fill it up again with detail
Don't go giving away company secrets, but defining what kind of work you did there is a big plus.
You've done 5 bits of contract work, but I have no idea what they were
user15026
Really, recruiters/HR are going to look for stuff that matches their needs in provable ways that connects to your previous stuff
16:28
Talk about how you fulfilled each contract and how amazing you were and how amazing you were
user15026
if you bog them down in wishywashy skill language at the top, they'll get bored, anyone can say they're good at MS Office in this day and age
And don't forget to talk about how amazing you were
user15026
but if you can do crazy shit like pivot tables (people seriously keep asking me about this) then say that
Also, I know this is a sanitized document, but if your last work was in 2012, check with your references to make sure their information is up to date and that they're okay with being your reference.
The thing is 'MS Office Experience' could mean anything from 'can open a Word document' to 'Can write Excel Macros like a boss'
16:28
Yikes. My resume is apparently 10 pages long. Probably time to trim some of the older jobs off of it.
Clarify
@JasonBerkan uwot
2 pages max
user15026
@fredley Yeah, this. Explain exactly what you mean.
@fredley Not in my line of work.
@MadMAxJr the references aren't professional references, I've been told that non-professional references are better than none, so those are some people that know me
user15026
@JasonBerkan 10 pages is at least 8 pages too many, if not 9?
16:29
Out here in the midwest US, my contracting agencies tell me the length of the resume depends on who you're pitching it to. In the age of digital processing, some want the 10 page resume.
@Chippies University tutor is usually a good one to have
@JasonBerkan Fair enough.
user15026
Re: references - ususally you don't list those on the actual resume
user15026
they're usually desired in a separate doc listing names, contact info, and how they relate to you
@fredley the problem is that I have no one like that that speaks English
You put references on a second sheet, available on request.
16:30
@AshleyNunn I'm a contractor - my resume gets shipped out with 200 page RFPs and it needs to be detailed as to why I am the best ft for the job.
@AshleyNunn Write 'references available on request' in your cover letter.
user15026
@JasonBerkan Okay, yeah, you're a unique case then :)
user15026
@fredley Or on the bottom of the resume, depending on style :)
@Chippies Hmmm, difficult one.
@AshleyNunn (Also, my resume is more or less written for me by the HR staff.)
16:31
Yeah, as contractors we're not human beings, we're expenses to the companies we work for. :|
@JasonBerkan Oh ok
user15026
@JasonBerkan Well, aren't you lucky :)
Letse... My resume details 5 jobs, going back to 2004, across 4 pages.
Also list key projects from your course. Was there a group project? What was your contribution? Did you write a dissertation? What was it about? Is it published online?
I mean, I have to provide the details of what I did - they just massage it into their template and make it sound the way they want.
16:32
Do you have github? Have you worked on any open source projects?
user15026
@fredley Yeah, like for mine, I list 3 relevant courses that I did stuff for that relate to the job to prove I learned stuff :P
This is a divisive one, and it'll depend on where you're applying to, but a short sentence at the end about hobbies/interests can be good. Use judgement though.
Yeah, those of us who code or do stuff in the IT world, you throw all your project work on your resume, because the HR goons just run it through their automated keyword scanner and get a percentage value of how much you meet the target keywords. Sometimes they don't even read it.
@MadMAxJr 2 jobs, 8 contracts, going back to 1995. :P
@MadMAxJr wat
16:33
@fredley I do have githubg, but I haven't done anything with it really
also, fyi, this resume is probably going to grocery stores and crap like that, since there's nothing else around here
user15026
@fredley I know HR people I've spoken to say this usually shows you don't have enough work/volunteer experience to prove your skills, and they toss it out
@MadMAxJr So I could write "I hate asp.net, java and c#, in particular framework_x and framework_y" on my CV and that would boost my score?
user15026
@MadMAxJr Oh yeah, that happens for more than just dev/IT work
@fredley In this region, HR offices often have no idea what the tech keywords mean, they just need to know what buzzwords you know that match the buzzwords their IT people told them they want. In your example, the scan would just pickup 'asp.net, java, c#'
@AshleyNunn As I said. Less good for a big firm, better for a startup where cultural fit counts for a lot.
user15026
16:34
@fredley True.
If I'm hiring, I like to see stuff like that.
user15026
But if he is applying to grocery stores and the like, it's not going to help
user15026
Trust me on this one.
That is also true.
@AshleyNunn No
16:35
If I was writing my own resume, I'd add personal / volunteer stuff. Our resume rules don't allow it, though, as it is irrelevant on a technical contract.
@AshleyNunn For best points, include that paragraph, but make it the only thing on the second page.
user15026
If then, you want to show off your team skills and your "I am not a drooling idiot" skills
@AshleyNunn University Group Project is a good one to put in for this
user15026
@JasonBerkan Yeah, I have volunteer on mine, mostly so I can be like look I put up with you lot for forever
(If you did one, I think most courses these days incorporate group work?)
@AshleyNunn Volunteer moderator! Look how good I am at working with other people!
BANS EVERYONE I DON'T LIKE
16:36
Just don't list your ban kill-count in skulls on your resume.
They might bump you up to management for that.
user15026
@fredley See, just about every course ever has one of those, so it's not really all that punchy unless you can prove you did something super cool with it that is more than "we messed about with powerpoint for 4 seconds and did the bare minimum"
@AshleyNunn :P
user15026
@JasonBerkan Hey, it helped me get the sportsbook job! :P
@AshleyNunn It's still useful to outline what you did, link to project site/github
user15026
@fredley Yeah, if you have stuff you can show off, most certainly do
user15026
16:37
Which is really my point. Just saying "I did group orjects" isn't very good
Also, if you are on facebook, delete facebook. If you post regular random thoughts and pictures in public circulation.
user15026
but going "here's some cool shit I have" that's better
@AshleyNunn yarp
user15026
@MadMAxJr Or just, you know, lock it the hell down?
@MadMAxJr Even better, just use a pseudonym
And check yo' privacy settings on all online accounts
user15026
@fredley This.
Social scraping is a increasingly big deal when hiring, doubly so for contracting.
Oh by the way, I have Crystal. Let me know if you want details on anyone
user15026
@TimStone HOW DID THEY EVEN GET THERE
It's super creepy!
user15026
16:39
@Chippies for the Excel expert stuff -what did you do that made you an expert? List it.
user15026
Trust me, if you are working with temp agencies, they love Excel knowledge.
user15026
(It's something I keep thinking about improving, but I get distracted)
@TimStone I have no words other than "I'm sorry because my state representatives are dumber than clams."
And at least clams are delicious too!
@TimStone What. The. Fuck.
user15026
16:40
I'd like if more than half of that article would load anytime soon.
Can we just File > New Game for Texas already?
@AshleyNunn I'm trying real hard to remember the important things I was doing and how to put it all in words...
Thanks for your input, everyone!
user15026
@Chippies If you want to just brain dump on me and I can help sort through it, you can always hit me on Steam or IRC :)
16:42
@Chippies Putting a CV together properly takes a good while. Especially since you want to tailor it to each job you apply for
@Chippies Resume/CVs are a weird world of changing standards. Good luck.
It can take days :-)
Some of us update our resume so often it could be mistaken for an incremental game.
@AshleyNunn They're just spewing stupid shit in light of the Supreme Court hearings right now...the attorney representing states wanting to enact such bans suggested that the purpose of marriage was entirely about procreation, which prompted the obvious question "Uh, what about heterosexual couples who don't have kids?" and (even better, from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg) "Say a 70-year-old couple wants to get married..."
The response to the latter question was basically that 70 year old men can totally still produce children and hey, let's not talk about old people sex.
@fredley I'll tailor it to each job when I'm applying to stuff that matters, for now I just need a generic resume that doesn't look completely empty :)
16:43
@Chippies Fair enough!
@TimStone this is both hilarious and sad.
user15026
@TimStone cracks up If I had to have a favourite, she'd be it. :P
cockpit of the diamondback
@Chippies am i too late for resume help?
@GodEmperorDune never too late for that, I think
16:55
@Chippies are you trying for a programmer job or just "anything that pays"
@GodEmperorDune the latter
no programming jobs around here :/
@Chippies :/ but there is always remote work :D
it's just a generic resume that I'm gonna drop off at random places
@GodEmperorDune I suppose, I don't really know how that works :P
anyway, you'll need to list accomplishments at your various experience places
for the seo content writer, how much did your stuff help with seo
excel expert, what cool stuff did you do with excel?
@GodEmperorDune I'm trying to figure that one out now, I should still have the stuff on my old laptop, it's been a while...
16:59
like "developed formulas to generate charts for management 10x faster" or something
