Le sigh. "Make a modification so that we can render barcodes of reservations in the email" does that, finishes work before deadline, gets it ready for testing. "Oh uuh, apparently reservations don't have barcodes at all, this should have been included in the task description but hasn't"

Q: Are there any time-based events in Pillars of Eternity?

DeltharisIs anything in the game based on time elapsed (except for the obvious stronghold build-times)? Can passage of time change the epilogue, influence quest outcomes etc? It would seem that, when I can afford it, it would be prudent to just build my Stronghold as much as I can doing nothing but sleep...

Q: Questions fitting more than one game

DeltharisDue to the nature of some games, it is possible (even inevitable) that some questions would fit more than one game. @PrivatePansy +1 for effort, but completely wrong assertion.

Is there a guide somewhere on what to do when your steam download is inconsistent? like it goes fine for a minute or so, then it goes back to 0 and slowly goes back to normal speed

@TZHX assert(twilight.isBestPony()) // True

@PrivatePansy var twilight = "Pinkie Pie";

oh man. this is not an easy query. Or I'm very stupid.
I have to find out all numbers that do not fall in any of the ranges specified in some other table.

@NateKerkhofs I'd search on the steam user forum, or similar.

@fredley My favorite is Derpy hooves

9:54 AM
if there is only one range where a number is allowed, then it's easy, but there are numbers that are allowed to be in either of two ranges.

String.prototype.isBestPony = function () {
    return this === "Pinkie Pie";
};

BestPonyDiscussion here? Screwball!

Don't make me break out Object.prototype (not that it would help in this case, I think)

function BestPonyDiscussion() {
    this.isBestPony = function(pony) { return pony.name.match(/twilight/i); }
}

WipqoznI don't think you'll be able to solve this without additional tools (plus you tagged it with substitute tools), so I've come up with a device which should solve your problem. You'll require some string, and a collar. You'll want to tie the string around the collar, and then put the collar on you...

@fredley The question is, can I raise my kids to be a prostitute like when I fail in Princess Maker?

Oh snap, complete pack, I'm still missing two of the DLCs

@MartinSojka wat

Princess Maker (プリンセスメーカー) is a series of Japanese life simulation bishōjo games by the video game and anime production company Gainax. The first Princess Maker, while popular enough to be translated into Chinese, was never released in the United States. Princess Maker 2 was translated by SoftEgg for a North American release, but this release was cancelled because publisher Intracorp went bankrupt. Princess Maker 3, Princess Maker 4, and Princess Maker 5 have subsequently been released. The series has been translated and released in Korea (Fujitsu) and Taiwan (Kingformation). No English translations...

the video ads are the worst

@TrentHawkins This is what frustrates me about watching episodes on network sites (just watched an episode of Forever yesterday). I'd do it more often if I wasn't slammed with five 2-3 minute ads for every "break".

@KevinvanderVelden Hey, I'm more than happy to jump on the dupe train.

2:27 PM
Yes, I understand that's how you operate on broadcast TV. This is not broadcast TV.

@Yuuki TV commercials are dying.

That and the ads have no diversity. It's just the same ones over and over again.

I haven't seen them at home for years.

@Yuuki "PLAY GAME OF WAR FIRE AGE"

@Rapitor Eh, not even the genericness of the products advertised, it's the exact same ad every time they go to break.

@frank what do you mean they are dying? They're still a thing. Not sure what you mean by you haven't seen any at home - are you watching conventional tv?

> Please note that by disabling DASH Playback will result in 480p and 1080p not being available. This is because of a recent YouTube change.
MONSTERS

2:32 PM

@AshleyNunn I haven't watched conventional tv ever since I moved into my place.
I only see commercials at my parents.

I PVR everything and fast forward through the commercials.

@KevinvanderVelden Why do you think I flagged it as NaA? :P

@Frank not seeing them because you choose not to watch them doesn't mean they're dying :P

2:33 PM
@Chippies I'm not the only one who just downloads their TV shows.

user15026
@frank then I wouldn't say they are dying, they're still rampant, you're just choosing not to consume them by altering your habits.

Cord cutters are becoming more and more common.

@OrigamiRobot What is DASH?

@AshleyNunn And that's the way people are going to continue moving.

@SaintWacko ANOTHER WAY OF SAYING "RUNNING" WITH ALLCAPS.

2:34 PM
Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH), also known as MPEG-DASH, is an adaptive bitrate streaming technique that enables high quality streaming of media content over the Internet delivered from conventional HTTP web servers. Similar to Apple's HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) solution, MPEG-DASH works by breaking the content into a sequence of small HTTP-based file segments, each segment containing a short interval of playback time of a content that is potentially many hours in duration, such as a movie or the live broadcast of a sports event. The content is made available at a variety of different...

@SaintWacko THAT'S THE THING WHERE IT ONLY BUFFERS THE NEXT LITTLE BIT

... probably this thing.

@OrigamiRobot Why would you want to do that?

user15026
@frank in a certain demographic, maybe. If you have Internet, if you know what you are doing, if you want to give up the service, etc. You are making gross judgements based on anecdotal (it seems) data.

@Frank perhaps conventional TV as we know it is dying, but there's still way too many TV commercials

2:34 PM
@SaintWacko THAT'S HOW YOUTUBE NORMALLY DOES IT

@OrigamiRobot Ohh, okay

@AshleyNunn True, at this stage it still takes a decent amount of tech expertise.

Every time I watch TV commercials I'm reminded that most people still live in a completely different world, culturally

But I can see it getting easier and easier to consume TV shows in a commercial-less format.

It's kinda scary

2:35 PM
you also generally can't download news, which is what a lot of middle aged and older people watch on TV

@Frank I am just a lowly 5.5k user, I can't see that! =p

of course you could read news articles, but that's not the same

> If DASH Playback is enabled it will buffer the video in blocks. That means that every time you seek in the video it will have to rebuffer that block and it will not buffer the next block if you're not at the very end of the current block. If DASH Playback is turned off YouTube will load normally where you can pause the video and it will buffer to the end of the video and you can jump around in the video as much as you like.

@OrigamiRobot youtube doesn't do that normally
I know it did it for me for a while and I hated it, but it then went back to being normal

UNLESS THEY CHANGED IT RECENTLY, IT DOES

2:38 PM
@KevinvanderVelden Neither can anyone else but mods. :P But I'm the instigator of dumping it into the queue.

seeking to a spot that has already buffered wouldn't re-buffer it for me

user15026
@frank my sister for example uses Netflix and stuff but also has conventional TV because you can't get everything that way and I banned her from downloading ever since I had to edit her registry to remove a virus.

@OrigamiRobot firstworldproblem

@Chippies This is the one downside.

@Frank I can't see that either! I found it because I was looking at the original question

2:39 PM
@OrigamiRobot I wonder if there's a setting somewhere to change that

@Chippies THERE IS IN YOUTUBE CENTER

@KevinvanderVelden Which is also how I found it.

In my circle of people, Netflix usage is exceedingly high. They still watch regular TV, but they watch much less of it.

@OrigamiRobot idk what that is

2:40 PM
@OrigamiRobot so, an add-on? bleh
I'm sure you can do it natively somehow

@AshleyNunn Netflix is a good example; it's a low barrier for watching stuff. It doesn't have everything, but it signals a migration to commercial-less watching.

but since it's google, it's well hidden

@Chippies it is the center of the labyrinth known as Youtube, you will need to prepare yourselves carefully, take torches or you are likely to be eaten by a grue

WHY BLEH?

Not a lot of torrenting, as they aren't tech savvy. Though the majority of them know enough to modify their settings so they can get American Netflix.

2:41 PM
@frank you haven't seen me in chat for months either, but that doesn't mean J'm dying

> GO NORTH

I'm

@OrigamiRobot I don't like having a lot of plugins, especially when the thing can be done natively

That's just because you're choosing to get your content a certain way

IT DOES MORE THAN JUST THAT

Ollie PottertonIt gets stuck on Downloading Minecraft Assets 0%. Please help. I have already tried to delete it and install it again but that just wont fix it.

user15026
@frank yes, but it is far from the harbinger of death for conventional TV like you say. If TV were dying so much, the CRTC would not be advocating for unbundling and such.

@AshleyNunn I'm not saying TV itself is dying.

user15026
There is still a real use case for conventional TV and thus also the ads

user15026
They still bring in piles of money.

When tv first started there were no ads
Same with radio
And probably Netflix

2:43 PM
@AshleyNunn Very true. There are things that TV provides that you can't get from just torrenting your shows.

user15026
@gnomeslice it was a happier time.

Current events, for one.

@AshleyNunn Basically people without marginally good and stable Internet and/or aren't willing to pay $8/month.
@Frank And that.

user15026
@frank also, torrenting isn't legal.

2:43 PM
<

user15026
@Yuuki uh, that's over simplifying it greatly.

I did preface with "basically".

@AshleyNunn Meh. It's a higher quality and more convenient product.

That makes it okay

Implies oversimplification.

2:44 PM
If they would offer a legal product that met that level of quality and convenience, I would buy and/or subscribe to it.

depends on if you have to ask your son/daughter to download a show for you and wait an hour for it to be done
with TV you just press a button and it's done

I don't see the problem with torrenting a show from a channel you're subscribed to

That's what my mom does

You're already paying for it

@SaintWacko COPYRIGHT

2:46 PM
@SaintWacko Gets murky when it comes to syndication though.

@Yuuki Yeah, I'm not saying it's legal, I'm saying that morally, I don't have a problem with it

user15026
@frank that doesn't change the fact that you are breaking the law and many people aren't okay with that. Just because it is convenient and stuff doesn't mean it is okay, in that sense.

user15026
I mean I don't care, but many people do.

@GraceNote KUZCO?

2:46 PM
I do torrent stuff but I don't try to justify it to myself as morally acceptable. I just so it because I want the stuff and don't want to pay for it.

LIKE, I GET MERLIN. HE WAS A FISH AT ONE POINT IN THE MOVIE.

@AshleyNunn And for those, I'd still advocate just using TV, if they're not comfortable with it.

I don't see how it's different to torrent a show from a channel you're subscribed to and PVR'ing said show

SAME WITH ARTHUR

I'm saying it's an option, one that people are increasingly moving to.

2:47 PM
I DON'T REMEMBER KUZCO EVER BEING A FISH

@SaintWacko And I'm saying it gets morally murky when it comes to syndication. Is it morally okay (from your standards) to torrent a show that's been re-run on ABC (which is basic TV, thus free) when it was originally on HBO (which is not)?
Not sure if an HBO show has ever appeared on ABC, but we're speaking hypotheticals here.

TV stations are starting to notice; their solution to less subscribers is to speed up the TV shows, so they can cram more ads in between.

His presence on the page implies that it apparently happened though, I guess.

"if HBO didn't want me tormenting their shit they'd give me FHD downloads of all HBO shows. GOD"

@Yuuki Oh, I see what you're saying. Yes. I can watch the show with my current subscription status

@OrigamiRobot i think in the scene when they are trying all the different potions he becomes one... I've seen that movie too much

The only thing I can think of in thinking about tormenting a TV is that you can't watch multiple episodes of one show in a row, you gotta change shows every episode.

2:49 PM
@Unionhawk If HBO didn't want me torrenting their shows, they'd make HBO Now available in Canada. Not that I'm saying that I torrent their shows.

@Unionhawk It's partially a sense of entitlement, true. It's also because the torrent file is a higher quality product, and I've kinda gotten used to that.

user15026
So this woman was supposed to call me 20 minutes ago..

@GraceNote Why's that?

how is PVR'ing a show legal, but downloading it from someone else who PVR'd it, while you are subscribed to that channel, not legal?

If we ever have to ban a user, can we instead alter their account to only see minecraft logdump questions?

2:50 PM
@SaintWacko Too much Pokemon
@OrigamiRobot Snrk

@gracenote a lot of media players autoplay

> TIME TRAVELLERS

@Chippies Basically you're buying licenses, not the actual episodes.

@MadMAxJr Oh what a horrible fate.

I think that's the justification.

2:50 PM
@Yuuki I still don't understand how PVR'ing is legal then?

Torrented stuff is not a 'product'

@MadMAxJr A modified version of hellbanning

@Chippies You are personally allowed to make copies of stuff for your own use. It was a legal battle fought when VCRs arrived.

Back go win

user15026
@chippies it has to do with how file sharing is considered. PVR = you clearly have licensing. (it's inherent in the device, and the fact that you are pulling directly from the service), whereas file sharing = no way to prove license

2:51 PM
@GnomeSlice Illegal stuff can be "product". It's pretty common drug dealer lingo. At least that's what all my police procedurals tell me.

Pce

@Chippies Because VCR recording was deemed legal. That's the precedent their working on.

Lol

user15026
And PVR is supposed to be for your use, not shared. Kinda like library ebooks

And it's less the person downloading that's in trouble; it's the person "distributing" something they don't have the right to that is.

user15026
2:52 PM
@frank uh...no

so, if I PVR it, can I put it on a DVD and watch it on my other TV?

...
Wot

@AshleyNunn You're going to need to clarify, as it's almost always seen as copyright infringement.

> "Hey buddy, you want some... product?"

user15026
@frank if I buy drugs from a dealer, I am still totes responsible for that.

2:53 PM
> "You, uh, got some that, uh, Grey's Anatomy?"

@Chippies NOT IN ANY CABLE COMPANY PROVIDED DEVICE I'VE EVER SEEN

@Chippies Legally, I believe so. However, most PVRs are really locked down.

@AshleyNunn Right, but that's because the drugs themselves are illegal to possess
There is no such thing as a license to possess them

either way, cable services are dumb and I gotta wash dishes. AFK

user15026
@SaintWacko true, but by acquiring the download, you are participating in an illegal act.

2:54 PM
@SaintWacko Except in some states, for some drugs

@fredley Well, right. In general, though

@Chippies According to the law? Yeah, I guess. But you have to get it on the DVD to begin with, which could be difficult without violating the DMCA or similar laws.
@AshleyNunn I don't think it's a great analogy, and talking about physical versus digital things is problematic at best.

@SaintWacko This.

user15026
I mean I am not advocating for the terrible that is the current TV situation and anti torrent and stuff. It sucks. But there aren't widespread better options that can completely replace it. We are moving to more streaming services, but even those, except for Netflix are often tied to you having a specific cable or satellite provider

We don't have many options because the broadcast companies are fighting it tooth and nail.

user15026
2:56 PM
@MBraedley well, yes, that's how we get into this mess. Because the law is applying physical rules to digital.

@frank which makes sense, from their business perspective.

Personally, I feel Netflix has been the best thing to happen to TV in a long time.

It blows chunks, but at the same time, business is business.

@AshleyNunn From the business perspective, yes. From the consumer perspective, it's absolute crap.

@frank I know! I am not saying it isn't!

@AshleyNunn Except it isn't. Copyright was never about the physical good. It has always been about the intangible good that, until relatively recently, has always existed on a physical good.

Man, I'm getting flashbacks to 1989, where in Okinawa we had a bootleg store with VHS copies /of everything/.
It was a popular little shop because they carried a ton of American movies.

@AshleyNunn It's a fun clash between big business and consumer practices.

@GraceNote I HOPE YOUR PROUD OF YOURSELF. I'M GOING TO HAVE TO WATCH THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE WHEN I GET HOME

Okay, trying to articulate this on my phone sucks, and I am saying all the wrong things. Gonna call it quits, hope the interviewer calls me (but it's a half hour later so I am not holding my breath) and play Harvest Moon because I just feel like an idiot because I can't seem to articulate what I mean.

@OrigamiRobot Kuzko turned into a whale in the lab area trying to find the right potion. You're welcome.
