@ArdaXi indeeds
Apparently, I win!
@GnomeSlice a few seconds
@badp Shit.
Why does my download manager keep trying to redownload when I load the page?
:S
@GnomeSlice IP or Steam ID check. (Sorry, got called away from my desk)
18:02
Oh wow, I just figured out I can control Spot's shape by accident >>
(I'm not going to bother if you beat this time. Go ahead make your day)
@FallenAngelEyes Yeah, the game is bad at explaining that.
Which is bad since you need it to solve puzzles.
UNITY, Y U NO WORK. ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
Also, how come doing a chat search for "Y U NO" returns 0 results?
@Powerlord Yeah, was able to open the Stove now that I figured that out. I was just moving my mouse around randomly when I noticed the corner fold down.
18:05
@RonanForman that's my link
I'm confused.
About downloading Unity. How do I actually reinstall it. :S
@GnomeSlice it's a browser plugin
@FallenAngelEyes Yeah, but when I downloaded it before, it had an executable I ran that set it up.
This page is trying to make me download it again, but I don't see the executable now.
(luddite)
What do I win?
18:08
Wait, what?
:S
Anyway you wont beat my time so nevermind.
@RonanForman Getting cocky are we?

Q: How do I swing a polearm while on horseback?

yx.Most polearms come with a swing and thrust damage number, but while on horseback, the default attack seems to be only thrust. How do I swing a polearm while on horseback?

What the hell, Unity...
How do I set this up...
I just thought of a crazy TF2 game mode: Medieval Prop Hunt. D:
I think that would be too hard for BLU to win, though.
18:12
@ArdaXi Have you seen my time?
Invalid auto-update file format. Please install manually?
@RonanForman Fine, whatever, you win
SOMEONE HELP ME.
Why does the invisible link to the unity site on that page now give me that auto-update error.
I thought it was just a link...
(I spent half the time cutting 2 hundredths off this time, so you're going to clock one second faster at the first try and I'm again going to pretend I don't care)
18:15
DAMMIT.
@GnomeSlice I would help you , but I don't want to go to said link in the first place.
I don't understand...
What's this .zip folder it's downloading?
just turn the download manager off
@GnomeSlice probably a virus
Erg, I should probably just unistall it.
I only really used it for the speed limiter when I was downloading 3Ds Max.
18:18
@GnomeSlice Yes.
There, I just moved my Prop Hunt file mirror
sv_downloadurl "http://files.ocrtf2.com/prophunt" <-- prop hunt mirror. :D
What is the population on your prop hunter server normally like @Powerlord?
I know the OCR ones are normally empty when I take a look
@Wipqozn Pretty much empty. :/
@Powerlord SNAAAKE?
Prop Hunt hasn't had a high interest lately. Which is a shame, since it's one of only two servers I know of with !propmenu enabled.
@badp Yup, that plays when you're a prop and die.
No idea why the Prop Hunt guy chose two Metal Gear sound clips and a clip from Chesney Hawkes's The One and Only.
18:25
...Why did you need to reboot, laptop.
Oh look, I uninstalled the manager, and it's working.
Wtf.
Holy shit, this is amazing.
@CRoss The trick is to play popular games early, and ask the dumb questions everyone has about the game ;-). It also seems that RPGs are very good for attracting lots of traffic to the site.
lolololololololololololololololololol
I only make $400, 000. FUCKING OBAMA!
HA! That's the best you've got? springbreakhero.com/?g=4awdrz
I hate this chat system

18:31
Oh, that's not your most recent time.
This track is terrible. Who made it.

Q: How do I install PS3 Game Utility for Dead Island

Krazy_TalkI haven't played Dead Island for a few days so I missed the release of the new patch over the last weekend. So when I tried to play with my buddies I obviously couldn't because of version differences. I tried to delete the game utility from my HDD, but when I opened up the utility folder, the fil...

@Lazers Game... utility?
What is this person talking about?
@GnomeSlice Mines the fastest so far.
@RonanForman Nope.
See if you can beat my first/only run on this much better track @Ronan.
So, how about that (choosing subject...) ?
18:39
Actually, that time shouldn't be very hard to beat.
Hmm, Alphas seems easy to catch up with.
17 hours ago, by GnomeSlice
I hate TF2.
@GnomeSlice @badp: Why haven't you suspended @GnomeSlice for a month yet? ;)
@GnomeSlice You... monster.
@Powerlord because I'm waiting for Jeff to implement proper permabanning
18:41
@GnomeSlice Seriously? I have that tag on "ignore" in gaming.SE, since I don't find that in the least interesting, but ... hate? :D
or punch over ip
I think this may be the new .
whichever comes first
@Powerlord See, at least I'm better than GnomeSlice!
@GraceNote Whom aren't you?
@ArdaXi Who am I not better than on the scale of liking TF2? I imagine everyone who actually plays the game.
Oh look. I finally found a case where the who/whom distinction actually matters to the meaning.
@GraceNote I don't (I don't use Steam, Origin, GFWL or similar services on principle).
How come as soon as I start playing a game that people are sharing times on, everyone else stops playing it.
@GraceNote Sans the "on the scale of liking TF2"
18:44
@MartinSojka what principle?
@MartinSojka That would put you on the list below me, then.
That's a weird principle.
By definition of the exact words I used, in fact.
@ArdaXi Well, revising that message like that, I hardly think that putting all the TF2 players as better than me, sans some appropriate scale, is fair.
2 mins ago, by GnomeSlice
How come as soon as I start playing a game that people are sharing times on, everyone else stops playing it.
@Wipqozn Stuff like "Don't support business models which I think are bad for the market as a whole in the long-term" and "I'm in control of every computer I'm the admin of", mostly.
18:46
@GraceNote You just can't take a compliment can you?
@GnomeSlice I didn't start playing it, if it makes you feel better.
@GraceNote: Now that we have Game On events scheduled in TF2, will you at least try the game?
@ArdaXi I find that reinterpreting statements is more fun than politely declining when I don't agree with a nebulous compliment.
@MartinSojka So you use a version of Linux from Scratch I assume
@GraceNote You're the only person I know who regularly challenges my vocabulary. Thank you.
18:48
@GraceNote So basically a convoluted way of saying that you indeed can't.

A: Reviving Game On

GnomeSliceFuture Game Suggestion: Super Spring Break Hero SD

@badp No, but I control very tightly which software gets to run, in which version, and when. Both on the 1000+ Linux servers and 10+ Windows computers.
@GnomeSlice You need better acquaintances.
@ArdaXi Well, if you said "Hey, your hairstyle is cute today", I'd say "Thanks!" or "Thank you much!", depending on affection level.
@ArdaXi Or a less-developed vocabulary.
18:49
@GraceNote 1. I probably wouldn't say that, definitely not like that. 2. How would I know what your hairstyle is like?
@GraceNote How high on that level would '=3' be considered? :P
@MartinSojka That's an impressive number of computers you have, still I don't see how Steam undercuts that
@GnomeSlice You're not getting a smiley out of me, nevermind an abomination that uses an equals-sign like that.
(a.k.a. a fancy package manager)
@GraceNote Heh.
EQUALS CLOSE SQUARE-BRACKET =]
18:51
@GraceNote Finally. Someone who agrees.
@badp It starts to get nasty when I prevent it from auto-updating, and it offers no features for me which would justify spending even a single processor cycle running it in the first place.
@ArdaXi Well, you probably wouldn't give a compliment like that, but note how that's not so formless.
...and why'd you prevent it from autoupdating?
I guess that's the problem
@GraceNote Formless is my style.
See above: Because I'm in control what runs, when, and in which version.
18:52
@MartinSojka No you're not. Not for multiplayer games at any rate.
Okay, let's change the question
And seriously, wanting that kind of control is beyond reasonable.
what's a typical reason for you to reject a newer version of something?
Just hating it for the sake of hating it.
(just curious, not trying to make a point)
18:53
@ArdaXi The only multiplayer game I play regularily is an MMO (Lineage II), and I can indeed control when it updates, and to which version. Even roll back updates, though it tends to cause instability.
Huh, you can't 'undo' shark tiles in the track creator.
@MartinSojka With 99% of MMOs you can control when it updates or when you play. Not both.
@GnomeSlice norepro
Playing and not updating are mutually exclusive.
@MartinSojka Really? I was under the impression that MMOs wouldn't let you play on their servers if you don't have the latest versions.
18:54
@badp A typical reason to reject a newer version is "I didn't run it through the testing environment yet", of course. I'm a sysadmin besides being a software developer.
@MartinSojka We're talking about games...
@badp Weird, when I was undoing, that tile just stayed there. When I rebuilt back to it, it continued on from the other side of it...
@Powerlord It works for Lineage II. Only the "big" updates every half a year or so are mandatory.
@MartinSojka Your job description was kinda implied by the "1,000 linux computers" bit, yes :)
You don't need to guarantee triple-nine uptime for your own gaming.
18:55
@badp And now it's undoing normally. :S
@ArdaXi I'm a software developer too. Games are just that - software. No reason to apply different standards to them. :D
@MartinSojka Yes, yes there is.
@badp Lol, and now it's not.
The purpose is different, so the standards you apply should be different too.
What you're doing is exactly what I said, finding reasons to dislike it for the sake of disliking it.
If you mean "entertainment", I play around with VS and IDA Pro as much as I play with "games". :)
18:57
@MartinSojka For the sake of playing, there is no reason to put VS and IDA Pro through such testing either.
For production, of course, that's different.
Anyway, even if I would be more lenient with games (which I don't see any reason at all to do; I have enough games which work fine under those constraints), there's still the case of me not agreeing with GFWL and similar business models.
@MartinSojka Speaking of Visual Studio, did you test out the updates for VS last week before applying them in your environment?
@MartinSojka But why?
@Powerlord I didn't apply them yet.
What reason other than nit-picking over assumed control you think you have over your computer is there to reject such solutions?
19:01
cricket
@ArdaXi I don't like the wilful destruction of the second-hand market, and I don't like the companies trying to undermine my rights of ownership of the software I buy, and I don't like DRM of the kind which is possible with online validation after purchase.
@Fabian Are there plans for Diablo III?
I imagine that it will be a huge game, and it seems like it would have a large question space
@MartinSojka It's interesting that you play an MMO at all, then.
@MartinSojka You've never had any more rights of ownership to software you buy than those any EULA grants you, within restrictions of the law.
With an MMO, I know I'm paying for a service, and I know it. The client is free. With other games - especially single-player ones - I pay to own a copy of the software.
19:03
Especially Steam has very unintrusive DRM which provides a great compromise between what companies need to stay viable and what consumers want.
@MartinSojka "I pay to own a copy of the software." This is the flaw in your reasoning.
@CRoss I'd guess that it will be part of the community promotion, but I don't know if there are any further plans.
You pay for a licence to use the software.
@ArdaXi No worries. It's the truth. I even checked with local (German) lawyers. :)
It's been that way since the dawn of commercial software.
I have a few of them as very good friends since 20+ years. :D
19:05
@MartinSojka Can you cite a law directly denying companies the right to grant you a licence rather than a full, unlimited right to the software itself?
Because the only way what you're saying is true is if there is a law that invalidates the provision in EULAs.
@ArdaXi Wrong question. I don't buy "unlimited right to the software". I buy usage rights to a copy of the software.
@MartinSojka You buy a licence. The copy of the software remains owned by the company providing it to you.
BEAT THIS
if you can be bothered
I can't
@ArdaXi As I wrote, you're wrong as far as German law goes.
19:07
@MartinSojka Then please enlighten me. (I can read German)
Ok, let me dig out the relevant BGH decision from last year ...
@MartinSojka Really? Lineage II's software was free? Why is it that Amazon doesn't seem to agree with that?
Probably depends on the region.
(and the prize for the lamest track goes to...)
@badp I still can't figure out if you guys are talking about racing games or music games.
19:09
@Powerlord Racing games
It's like Trackmania but more bare bones
(he's at work, he can't open that)
That's officially linked from lineage2.com/pds/pds_client.html
@MartinSojka then only buy games when they're dirt cheap, and accept the fact you're buying an inferior product for a lower price, giving an appropriately smaller margin :)
You can download the client for free, but do you still have to pay $40 or whatever to open a new account?
19:11
but I'm no one to tell you what to do with your computers and your money
@badp I just spent like 10 minutes making a great track, but it turned out to be terribly, terribly difficult.
I never even managed to make it all the way through.
@Brant I would hope it isn't $40, even WoW is only $20 for the base game (which includes the first expansion now)
Heck, you can even play the first 20 character levels of WoW now without paying them anything.

Q: Minecraft: Harvesting cobblestone

fbreretoI have been working on a cobblestone generator. Being ultra-lazy, I don't want to spend countless minutes (and who knows how many pickaxes!) actually harvesting the cobblestone. Is there something I can add to the system that will "pop" the cobblestones so I need just run them over and pick them ...

Edited...

@Powerlord I have qualms in buying games that are already purchased in this house, which is the root of my distaste for Steam.
I should go play through the first 20 levels of a WoW race every time I have the itch for WoW.
@MartinSojka Lineage II player eh? I admire your tenacity. I couldn't handle the grinding.
Any minecrafters here now?
@DaveMcClelland @GnomeSlice just posted a message a minute or two ago!
19:16
@Brant More or less. As I said, the software is free (there's a free 14-day trial available too)
@GraceNote Already purchased? TF2 is free. Or do I misunderstand?
@GraceNote You could just play the free games on Steam, then.
@MartinSojka Hmm, makes sense. Still, Steam is legal in Germany.
@Powerlord Yeah, I was hoping @GnomeSlice was still around
I hate Steam.
19:16
Oh, right, TF2 is free. I forgot that part. Hah.
My brother has the Orange Box, y'see, so that's what I usually think of.
@Brant Grace means the fact that Steam doesn't allow sharing games.
See, I knew I should have mentioned the free part in the Game On
Portal may still be free depending on when Valve is ending that.
Which is quite probably my only qualm with Steam.
@ArdaXi Doesn't mean I have to like their business model (same as for GFWL and Origin, really). So why would I support it?
You mean you didn't?
19:17
An Orange Box that I can't even play
@MartinSojka Fair enough.
However, you will soon have to face the fact you will no longer be able to buy games.
@FallenAngelEyes To be frank, I hate the grind too. I much rather just kill people. Consequently, after 6+ years, I'm still just level 83. :D
If it was a matter of "I can't play at the same time as my brother", that'd be manageable. See Diablo II for that (before we bought a second LoD disc)
@GraceNote I've only played the Orange Box version of TF2 as well. It doesn't even come close to the content of the standalone PC version of TF2, apparently.
@GnomeSlice It's still part of the PC/Mac version of Orange Box.
19:19
@ArdaXi Then I'll be stuck playing Paradox Interactive games then, I guess. :)
(which is what, $20 now, $13 when it goes on sale?)
@Powerlord You're right, thanks.
Watching the tone on the TF2 Xbox forums over the years has been fascinating.
The funny part is, even as recently as... I think March this year... Valve was still saying they want to port the PC version changes to the Xbox 360.
@MartinSojka I played it on a uh.. private shard for a bit that had boosted values for XP/whatever their currency name is that I can't remember, but it didn't catch me enough to make me want to seriously dedicate myself to the game
@Powerlord Stupid Microsoft policies
19:20
First they were complaining about the lack of updates, then complaining about the bugs and exploits and neglect, but over time it shifted to bragging about how their "version" of the game is better.
@Powerlord Can't you only get TF2 for xbox360 via the Orange box?
My brother's is the PC/Mac Orange Box
@FallenAngelEyes Not just that, Valve is running into memory limits trying to port stuff.
@Powerlord Ah :(
@GnomeSlice Yup. Originally, that was also the only way to get it for PC. Then Valve broke the Orange Box into separate games.
19:21
Yeah I got it originally through the Orange Box as well
Which was humerous, because they were $20 a piece or $30 for all 5.
@FallenAngelEyes As always with MMOs, it's not really the game which keeps you playing, it's the community. In case of Lineage II, a community of hungry, cannibalistic sharks. With friggin' lasers on their heads.
And to think, at the time TF2 and Portal were merely a couple of games they threw into the HL2 bundle just to sweeten the deal.
@MartinSojka Hahaha. Didn't know it was that bad. Though most of my MMOing money does go to NCSoft (Guild Wars, City of Heroes, I played Aion a bit as well but no longer, and Guild Wars 2 will be a future purchase)
@Brant What surprised me is that Valve canceled the Black Box for PC, which would have been HL2: Episode 2, Portal, and TF2.
AKA Orange Box without the 2 games that were already out.
19:24
I was disappointed they did that because that's the version I actually wanted to buy.
I mean, who the hell didn't already own HL2?
@Brant er... I didn't.
Meh. :P
Granted, I didn't get OB (or more accurately the Source Premiere Pack) until April 2008.
@Brant I still have not played HL2
19:25
@FallenAngelEyes What.
I personally can't think of a more accessible game for SE Game On! than Super Spring Break Speedboat Hero SD.
@FallenAngelEyes I guess that makes my "only 3/4 the way through HL2" seem less bad.
I don't remember how late my brother got the Orange Box, and how much later still it took to install it and play Portal.
See how your first attempt on my custom track matches up to mine.
@ArdaXi Still haven't played. I don't like waiting for sequels.
19:25
@FallenAngelEyes It's not "bad", it's just how (nearly) unrestricted PvP games turn out. EVE Online or Darkfall have similar communities.
@FallenAngelEyes Why exactly would you play Valve games?
So I'll wait until HL3 is announced, then I'll get around to it.
It's not like I don't have enough to play in the meantime.
@ArdaXi Portal ended quite satisfactorily.
@badp wtf, did you fill the entire map when you built this track.
Granted, I owned HL1 for a good 10-11 years before finishing it.
TF2's just a MP game with no intended ending
19:27
Ah, so by sequel you mean narrative sequel.
@MartinSojka Point. I'm not much of a solo PVPer (though I enjoy team PvP), I mostly play for PvE. :)
@ArdaXi Aye. This is the same reason I wait for a book series to finish before reading it.
TF3 will likely come out whenever Valve decides to make a game with "3" in its title.
LOOKING AT YOU GEORGE R.R. MARTIN
Even the new Counter-Strike is really only Counter-Strike 2, because Counter-Strike: Source is just a remake.
@badp ...5 laps. Really?
19:29
@FallenAngelEyes Neither L2 nor EVE are much for solo PvPers (no idea about Darkfall). Without some 100+ people on your side, you'll have a hard time achieving anything worthwhile.
@MartinSojka Yeah, but I've never been in a large enough guild/corp on that scale. Though I could get into Goonfleet probably...

Q: Developer Commentary without Completing the Chamber

RanieriI've played (and finished) the original Portal on my Xbox 360. I really liked the game, and thoguth many times about having another go to listen to the developer commentary. However, I do not fancy another play-through using that wicked game-pad contraption. Recently I picked up the PC version ...

@GnomeSlice yes
@GnomeSlice yes
gotta give it to me I finished it :P
What was your time?
11 minutes give or take
Mostly penalties
19:36
Oh, wow, I don't think it would've taken me near that long.
You can skip up to two track pieces without a penalty, I think.
I really want this to be upvoted on the Game on! thread.
I think you can do four too if you swerve enough along the way.
@badp I made a really complicated track earlier, and it kept giving me like 19 second penalties for skipping track, even though I wasn't skipping any pieces.
Just getting bumped off a lot.
but as you've seen there's probably a bug with cutting pieces right away from the start
See if you can beat my track.
as seen in that 6 pieces map, where you can cut right away with no penalty
19:40
@badp I'd noticed.
If you try and go all the way to the bottom and then cut on the return trip (the dual) you get a 'dude you skipped too much' message
@badp Bottom of what?

A: Reviving Game On

GnomeSliceGame Suggestion: Super Spring Break SpeedBoat Hero SD To be completely honest (for once!), I actually can't think of a more casual/accessible game than this for Game on! sessions. It's undeniably fun to build tracks, share them with other players, and compare your times. There was some grea...

@badp did you ever get a time on my track?
Wow, look at the URL that was generated for this track.
@GnomeSlice I tried to beat your score, but then I was terrible
@GnomeSlice I can see the problem there. You're not supposed to actually do that
@Wipqozn Which?
19:51
@GnomeSlice the one your posted in the meta
@badp Not supposed to do what? What problem?
@Wipqozn Oh. Heh. Can you upvote it please? I hate asking, but I'd dearly love for that to be featured from time to time in Game On!.
@GnomeSlice I already downvoted it, sorry
@Wipqozn ಠ_ಠ
...as you can tell by the fact is has no votes of any kind
@GnomeSlice I did a crowd takedown ×16 and hence outdo you no matter the time
@GnomeSlice Do eights in tracks
19:52
@Wipqozn I see. Also, you said you never installed Unity.
@GnomeSlice was too lazy to*
but then I decided to do it anyways
@badp But the randomly generated one generates crossovers too.
@badp Wait, what. Where did you get a crowd takedown x16 lol.
Did you just drive on the beach, rather than take the jumps?
@Wipqozn So... you did play it?
@GnomeSlice yes, and failed miserably
@Wipqozn =] Hooray! :D
The track is a little difficult.
Not even close to the first one I tried to make though.
You're a sick and twisted person @GnomeSlice
19:55
@Wipqozn I didn't realize it was going to be that difficult. I never even managed to get all the way through it, so I didn't have a link to share.
@GnomeSlice oh wow
Still no upvotes. =[
@GnomeSlice everyone is probably just bitter they suck at it
I know I am
@Wipqozn Well, I would have eventually made it through it, but I had craploads of penalties and crashes.
@Wipqozn Everyone is... what?
missed a "t"
19:57
@Wipqozn And a "because".
@GnomeSlice I disagree
@Wipqozn ಠ_ಠ
Can you upvote it anyway.
however
good bye for now
=[
Byebye.
@GnomeSlice you're so cool GnomeSlice, begging for up votes
19:59
@Wipqozn I know, it's terrible. At least it's CW, so I don't get any reps.
