I think playing magic with no turns, abilities, spells, effects, zones, or cards would be really boring

Q: Origins of the Mass Effect plot

Playing through Mass Effect 1 revealed one of the most rewarding stories I've encountered. The proportions of the pump and dump plot the hero unravels towards the end is mind boggling. Does the plot from the original game borrow from pre-existing writings?
