@Wipqozn It was on meta, it got closed as a migration to main, got closed there, too, so it got dumped back onto meta.
Actually, other way around.

Well, it seems like I found a theme to my relatives' visit: really strong smells.

Two days ago it was some kind of preserved fish that stunk up the entry hallway and this morning, it's some kind of bamboo that, when cooked, has a smell that reminds me of dry heaving.
And also makes me want to dry heave.

Q: Questions that don't answer the question

JutschgeI know it's rather rare but sometimes answers are posted that don't answer the question that's being asked. What exactly should be done with these answers? I mean technically they are answers since they are a bit more than a comment but they aren't wrong or low quality.. they just deal with somet...

Wait, questions are supposed to answer questions?

1:12 PM
@Yuuki oups... i'll edit that

@Jutschge I was just about to make that edit.

Saying english is complicated would be a bad excuse here I guess =P?

@Jutschge Yep
But you can use the, "I'm on mobile" all day long.

I don't think I can take a step downstairs due to fear of throwing up.

Newegg's got a deal on RAM at the moment. 8GB G-Skill for $85.

1:18 PM
@Yuuki a big 8-legged NOPE down there?

Inhale. Hold breath. Walk downstairs. Leave building. Exhale. #lifehack

Arg, why is UDP so complicated in Java?

That's like half of what I paid for mine a few years ago.

@Sterno Said building is my house.
@Jutschge Just really, really bad smell.

@Yuuki Making it a more specific building does not nullify the usefulness of the advice!

1:20 PM
@Sterno Where do I go after leaving the building?!

@Yuuki Doesn't matter.

I haven't eaten breakfast either.

It's for the fresh air.

@Yuuki Strip club

If this happens again, I think I might have to invest in a gas mask.

1:21 PM
@Yuuki I wonder, do they neutralize bad smell?

> It depends on the type of cartridge in the gas mask and what it is intended to filter out. One of the most universal cartridges has activated carbon in it, it will filter out many types of noxious substances. It is also a great odor removal substance, it filters out many odor causing organics. Without activated carbon, it has little guaranteed chance.

Yesterday we saw Doublelift build a Trinity Force on Vayne. However, I asked my self a few questions, since i never really played Vayne: Does her Q proc Spellblade? (I highly asume YES) Does her Q affect Trinity Force bonus damage? Example (armor calculation ignored) We have 100 AD and maxed Q. Our next attack after we Q (without TF) would deal 150 AD (100 *

Then again, that's from Yahoo! Answers so take it with five tons of salt.

You're drunk again, Lazers

Broccoli!
@MBraedley Complicated?

1:28 PM
After having kids, it's amazing how many foods I used to like now just smell like smelly diapers to me. My wife gets pretty insulted when I sniff and say "Is there a poopy diaper somewhere?" and then she says "No, I'm making dinner."

@Powerlord Well, receiving multicast packets. I'm not sure I'm doing it correctly right now.

@Sterno Your sense of smell has simply evolved to become prescient.
You're not smelling the food as it is now, you're smelling it as it will be in a few hours.

@Sterno Indeed.

Oh jeez... on The Daily WTF, I just saw someone call electronic gadgets "male jewelry" (when talking about the Apple Watch) and someone else said "You're supposed to put it on your wrist, not your penis."

@Sterno Yeah, I can see why.

1:37 PM
Oh yay people start to ask league questions again. Finally something I can answer

1:49 PM
@Sterno I find this amusing.

Ugh, stupid work computer. It seems like something is sucking down the CPU cycles, but nothing is showing up in task manager. Then when I try to restart, it can't even log out. It's a huge cost to my productivity, and I have to do this almost daily.

@MBraedley ...that sounds like what I go through except I actually can log out.
Then again, I know what my problem is: Symantec Endpoint Protection.

@MBraedley so you can't log out? You can still pull the plug =p

Not using Symantec, using McAfee instead. I can tell that I have to restart when my audio starts getting wonky. That's the first perceivable indicator, but by then it's too late.
@KevinvanderVelden Yeah, I do forced shutdowns with the power button.

Q: "Laggy" cutscenes with my ps4

Joao VictorI've bought a ps4 with some games. But the "laggy" cutscene behavior occured only with two of them so far: Tomb Raider and Watch Dogs. To be more precise, the initial cutscenes are "laggy": the one which lara gets hit on the head at the beach and the one which shows the bikers chasing Aiden (Tom...

2:03 PM
Hmm, apparently Ars Technica is saying Destiny isn't that interesting.

@Powerlord It's most likely hype backlash.
I don't think anything could've lived up to the hype Destiny generated.

I checked out a Destiny stream on Twitch... and they spent over an hour killing one boss in one area, no changes to patterns or anything

@3ventic A similar boss was in the demo. Just a huge ball that shot energy beams (which were easy to avoid), that took an insane amount of punishment, even with heavy weapons. The only challenge was to get ammo drops.

@3ventic Yeah, I've heard many complaints about the game thus far.

@3ventic Yeah...that's the one thing I find I don't like about Destiny. The Bosses take so long and really don't do much, especially that one spider tank.

Q: For which item slots are Warforged Items not available?

HowlinWulfI want to know which item slots do not have the potential to receive Warforged or Heroic Warforged Gear. I know that the 2 slots I listed under 'Cosmetic' Slots cannot contain them, but what about the others? I have only seen Warforged versions of all the Main Slots, as well as Wrists and Neck ...

Not that it matters to me, it's not on PC.
3

IK!!
So ticked about that

Not on PC = I'm not getting it
mostly because I'm not going to buy a console to play one game

@3ventic Good boy

It's a video-only answer, and the poster has ignored requests to summarize the information.

2:12 PM
@3ventic Yeah, I'm rather annoyed at the assumed deal that Ubisoft made with Sony and Microsoft to release AC:Rogue exclusively on 360/PS3 and ignore PC. The producers refuse to answer questions about that though so I guess it's just a waiting game until that exclusivity window expires. (Assassin's Creed is a guilty pleasure, shh)

And it's attracting a ton of spam suggested edits.

Honestly, if you're thinking about Destiny and haven't yet played the Borderlands games, you should take a look at them.
(Plus they're on PC as well as consoles)

Q: Can i give away unplayed DRM-free games?

br4inwash3rJust wondering if it's ethical or not to giveaway some of my unplayed games. To add some perspective, i got these games from humblebundle.com. i want to give it away because i'm not interested in playing and/or it's not available for my OS.

@Powerlord mmm playing both I struggle to see similarities. I find myself comparing Destiny to Halo much more

@Rapitor Do you have Destiny? How are the guns? Do they still feel the same or did that change?

2:20 PM
@5pike I got it, yes. feel the same versus what. beta?

@Rapitor Yeah, the beta.
Because one scout rifle really felt like the next.

I didn't really play the beta that much to deeply analyze it or anything. just for like an hour or 2 to get a feel for it and confirm if I wanted to buy it or not. So I can't really say.
from what I have played guns do behave differently even if they are in the same "family"
I use pulse rifle (the burst fire) and as I've gotten new upgraded guns the recoil, reloads, mag size, and appearance have all been pretty different

Question for other techs: If a piece of software you support comes up as a virus, and the vendor refuses to tell you how it works, what do you do?

@Rapitor Mhh... sounds good. Because in the Beta, the only difference I noticed, that one had 10 bullets and the other had 7. Same ROF and reload time.

@5pike also I've noticed low level gun families don't vary too much. all of that comes in at level 20 gear. where each weapon as their own progression tree and look.

2:32 PM
@badp when I can charge it!

@Frank Ummmm.... well, good thing that isn't my job here. :P

@Powerlord What would you do?

@Frank that would sound an alarm...
Is is a false positive?

I'm curious, as I don't think I'm being unreasonable to make my concerns known that we shouldn't be using this software, if that's the sort of thing I get from the vendor.
@juanvan Oh, yeah, definitely.
But the response I got was, "Yeah, we're waiting on Norton to fix it."

Ah - ya then adding the Exception to the anti virus

2:36 PM
@Frank Norton ... well there's your problem

#1 problem connecting peach tree across a network - NORTON!

@Rapitor Yes, I'm surprised Norton is used in a corporate environment.

Gah! I can't find @Wipqozn in the user list. shakes fist

Then again, we use Symantec's corporate antivirus and it's causing performance issues on my PC whenever the definitions are updated (it does an immediate background scan on everything running/critical system files)

2:40 PM
V_V Phone Phun!

apple cultists are the WORST

I run windows on my mac -_-

The reality distortion field at work.

@Batophobia We are. The absolute worst.

@Rapitor So it's not the vendor I need to worry about? But Norton?

2:43 PM
@Unionhawk ...you did notice the Galaxy Note is wider?

@Powerlord I did. Looking up how much of a difference it is now.

@Frank run it through an actually competent anti-virus and send them those reports.

@JasonBerkan I am here.

@Rapitor I've had decent experiences with Norton.
A bit of a resource hog, but the virus scanner does the job rather well.

2:44 PM
@Wipqozn I found you eventually. Hitler.

@JasonBerkan I'm such a monster.

It's wider by 0.06 inches.
(1.4mm)

@Rapitor Apparently they get the same thing from Avast.

I don't think that difference accounts for the difference in reaction.
At all.

@Frank I was the same way, then after a switched to Kaspersky it found a ton of viruses Norton just didn't notice, but as it is a bit expensive I went over to Avast(free) and even that found more than Norton

2:48 PM
2 mins ago, by Frank
@Rapitor Apparently they get the same thing from Avast.
@5pike I'm stealing this for our daily huddle meeting.

I wonder if, now that the iPhone gets into Android-shaped territory with one third of the Android-typical RAM, they'll still be able to run properly and smoothly

@Frank You do that. I also took it from twitter.

@5pike Apparently I've had my iPhone 6 for a while then

@Batophobia the future is 2012, apparently.

@5pike the sad part is Apple will still sue.

2:58 PM
@Rapitor Yeah, but that's nothing new.

@Unionhawk It's almost as if The Verge is biased towards apple! gasp
@Powerlord Whoa, wait. Destiny can be compared to Borderlands?
Okay, I need it now

41 mins ago, by Rapitor
@Powerlord mmm playing both I struggle to see similarities. I find myself comparing Destiny to Halo much more

@Unionhawk It's worth noting it was written by two different authors.
I saw this earlier via reddit and quite a few comments pointed that out.
@5pike This, however, is hilarious.

Oh, wait
Destiny is console only
Nevermind

3:05 PM
@SaintWacko for a few months. seriously. the interface/UI is already 100% mouse compatible.

@Rapitor Ah, well that's good to hear
Actually, that's a good thing
I have a month to finish up the BL2 expansions I haven't done yet
Then a month to play Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
Then maybe Destiny for PC
Anyone have any good KSP youtubers they'd recommend? Besides Danny and Scott, I already subscribe to them

both Bungie and Activision want it to happen too, apparently. They just wanted to get it right and out on console first as that is where all the money is.
@SaintWacko Robbaz if you like comedic spins on it.

@Rapitor I looked at his stuff. Didn't do anything for me. He's a little crude

Anyone, is this a good PSU? newegg.com/Product/…-na--na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=
Corsair CX600M 600W 80+ Bronze certified
It's got a really good deal on it right now and it more than meets my needs

@RPiAwesomeness Corsair PSUs are usually pretty good.
...although I'm not sure what the difference is between the CX and HX lines that make the HX more expensive.

3:21 PM
@Powerlord So I've heard. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it. I know it's way overkill for what I'm planning (AMD FX-8320 Vishera 8-Core + GeForce GTX 750/750Ti) but it's cheaper than some higher wattage PSUs and will give me plenty of overhead in case I OC or build a better PC later...
I have to buy it today to get the deal...so I've got to decide...

@RPiAwesomeness looks pretty good.

@Powerlord IYO, should I get it? @Rapitor?

shrug

@RPiAwesomeness can't really say. It looks good enough. Does it have enough wattage for your needs?

@Rapitor More than enough
At least 100W over
probably more like 150/200
Okay, does this mean that this mobo can only use 1600MHz RAM if the RAM is OCd?
DDR3 1866(O.C.) / 1600(O.C.) / 1333 / 1066

3:27 PM
Well, Corsair's PSU Finder hasn't been updated for the GeForce 700 series, but it's recommending CX power supplies based on the 650 and AMD FX processors.

hmm....

If I had the ~$200 more, I could purchase my build right now: pcpartpicker.com/p/bQckqs
:(
I'm trying to decide if it's prudent to pounce on the GTX 750Ti 2GB for $20 off now, or wait until I can buy all the parts at once, and maybe not get a deal on it.
I'm afraid it's gonna not be compatible and by the time I have earned the money to get the other components, I may have got out of the return period.

That is a cool site pcpartpicker.com

@juanvan No kidding. I couldn't do my build without it

to get all the parts to match?

Yeah, and to check on wattage and compatibility

3:48 PM
@RPiAwesomeness I've never used sites like that. I just throw bits and pieces together.

@Unionhawk I don't really use my gmail, but since I use the same password everywhere this could be a problem.

@Unionhawk Two factor, FTW.

3:51 PM
@Lazers That sounds like speculation.

@Unionhawk Curses

And it's apparently not your Gmail password.

Unless your Gmail password is the same as your password on some other site.

That is cool I use 417W hehe in my current setup

3:57 PM
@Unionhawk If I worked in Gmail, the first think I would do is force everyone on that list to change their password.

@JasonBerkan Exactly.

I walked around a lot today, apparently

@PrivatePansy My 3DS tends to stay at home, so I rarely accrue steps.

3:58 PM
@PrivatePansy 20,142 exclamation marks? Man you really gotta read your notifications

@murgatroid99 on that list

I also climbed a mountain today. No biggie.

@Unionhawk Why? They know whose passwords were leaked. There's no reason to make other people change
Plus, two-factor is useful

"meh"

They literally have the list of addresses that they need to reset in a convenient text file. That's probably a simple script

4:04 PM
Yeah, you're probably right. I'd still at least suggest everyone else change too.

@JasonBerkan I've been meaning to do two step for a while. Seems like a good time to do so.

@murgatroid99 it is called a RainbowTable for the password file
Bank passwords match - email password match - dumbsites all match - that is how I work my passwords

@Wipqozn Given that the "second factor" for almost every other site / password is control of my Gmail account, I figured it was prudent to lock that account down as hard as possible.

@JasonBerkan I'm beginning to think the sites you're talking about are doing two-factor authentication wrong.

@Powerlord They are. That's why it is in quotation marks.
(I'm referring to password resets, which require something I have - control of my Gmail account - but not something I know.)

4:13 PM
Yeah. I hate sites that ask you for your email as 2fa, then gleefully accept the same email for password resets

@JasonBerkan Yeah, my thinking as well.

I think Steam does this

Changes complete! All four gmail passwords changed and hooked up to my phone.

I need to re-setup 2-factor authentication

I don't think anything other than my Gmail and bank uses 2fa properly out of all accounts I have
Steam Guard is a complete nuisance and pointless to boot

4:16 PM
Blizzard does, don't they?

Oh, and LastPass, of course

Remember when lastpass had that grid-based 2fa? That was a fun time.

FAE
My copy of Destiny got here today! :DDD

Blizzard's got almost airport-like levels of security theater

I should probably add 2fa to PayPal, but... arstechnica.com/security/2014/08/…

4:21 PM
and for as "pointless" as Steam Guard is, it's still infinitely better than Blizzard's proprietary authenticators
Fuck everything about Blizzard's proprietary authenticators

@PrivatePansy I need to edit that too.

Actually, I don't think I'm entirely correct there
Steam Guard makes having a Steam password completely pointless

Why?

Since everything is still 1fa, tied to your email

wat

4:23 PM
Since you can reset your password every time with that same email, yup

Assuming an attacker compromises your email, he can use it to reset your password

But if that email has 2fa auth, then it's more secure

Of course. I'm saying that Steam doesn't actually have 2fa

Not sure it's been publicly announced yet...

@3ventic TIL you're from Finland. I thought you lived in the US of A.

4:29 PM
lol

Security is only as strong as its weakest link.

> If I type my password in here, can you guys check my account for me?!?!

I'm often up late at night

@3ventic I miss translating sometimes, then I see the list of moderators for Italian and I stop missing it.

Shit, my email is in that list.

\o/

4:33 PM
@murgatroid99 what list?

@badp The list of every email address that had a leaked password

@murgatroid99 where?

Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus (519–430 BC) was a Roman aristocrat and statesman whose service as consul in 460 BC and dictator in 458 BC and 439 BC made him a model of civic virtue. Cincinnatus was regarded by the Romans, especially the aristocratic patrician class, as one of the heroes of early Rome and as a model of Roman virtue and simplicity. He was a persistent opponent of the plebeians. When his son, Caeso Quinctius, was convicted and condemned to death, Cincinnatus was forced to live in humble circumstances, working on his own small farm, until an invasion caused him to be called to serve...

I use my spam email on all sites until I deem them safe & important enough for my main email

both the list and haveibeenpwned aren't loading :/

Mine is apparently not in the list.

@badp You should type your password into chat, so we can check it for you.

@JasonBerkan hunter6

4:37 PM
@badp All I see is *******

@PrivatePansy Yes, that's it.

Guys! Type your password backwards! It censors it! *******
god I remember those days

Mount Tai (Chinese: 泰山; pinyin: Tài Shān) is a mountain of historical and cultural significance located north of the city of Tai'an, in Shandong province, China. The tallest peak is the Jade Emperor Peak (simplified Chinese: 玉皇顶; traditional Chinese: 玉皇頂; pinyin: Yùhuáng Dǐng), which is commonly reported as 1,545 metres (5,069 ft) tall, but is described by the PRC government as 1,532.7 metres (5,029 ft). Mount Tai is one of the "Five Great Mountains". It is associated with sunrise, birth, and renewal, and is often regarded the foremost of the five. Mount Tai has been a place of worship for at least...
I climbed this mountain today

Virtualbox is hijacking my alt-tab and I don't like it

I have the list open

4:38 PM
Well, climbed it half way to be more exact, mainly because the cable car broke down

@PrivatePansy yes, yes, uphill both ways, snow, school, every day, I know, I know

@badp If that's all there is before the @, then no, it's not in there.

@Frank did you seriously just check "hunter6@gmail.com"? :P

@Frank Reread @JasonBerkan's message.

My email address is in my profile

4:39 PM
@badp I checked it against the list.

It's possibly the most decorated mountain in the word, certainly in China

And, no, it's not.

It seems that the mountain is irresistibly beautiful, at least to a certain type of emperor
They pen down their thoughts on any stone they come across and some poor chap will then have to carve it into the mountain for future generations to see

@Frank woot woot! I can keep using this password for years then!!

4:41 PM
@badp Or until the next hack scare.

Anyone have experience with those/heard about them?

Also, a surprising number of quotes from Chairman Mao, who I don't think has actually visited the mountain, but which patriotic communists feel obliged to carve into the mountain anyway, alongside quotes from emperors thousands of years ago

actually it's not enough to check the list for exact checks

Also, my feet hurts. Actually, everything hurts. I think I'm going to lie down now.

because gmail ignores dots in your email address, and that list has dots in it

4:43 PM
@murgatroid99 I'm at work. Can you tell me if my email is in the list?

@Fluttershy What is it?

fluttershy@ponyville.com

I AM FINE

nihilistronin @

None of my emails have been leaked

4:45 PM
@Fluttershy Nope

I'm not finding it either

mediumdeviation, if you please

>>> x = set(open("google_5000000.txt").readlines())
>>> x = set(email.replace(".", "") for email in x)
>>> "mediumdeviation@gmailcom\n" in x
False

@badp I've always wondered if that is part of the specs or if it's just Gmail

@PrivatePansy not that either

4:46 PM
@Wipqozn What in the world is your gravatar now?

er

@RPiAwesomeness His gravatar is terrible. That's all you need to know.

I'm dumb; I need to check without the dot and with a newline

@PrivatePansy Fair enough

@RPiAwesomeness A cooking turtle. @LessPop_MoreFizz provided it.

4:48 PM
@Wipqozn lololol

Anyone else would like me to check?

@badp sed s/[.]//g google_5000000.txt | grep 'mediumdeviation'

That's actually pretty good. Not as good as it could be, but still :D

@murgatroid99 that'll also match subsets

4:49 PM

Q: What is the point of buying new Jump Ships?

CaulynDarrSo the game starts you out with a basic Jump Ship to get around the system. There's a vendor in the tower who sells other Jump Ships. Do these other ships do anything special? Or are they just hats? Expensive, cool looking, warp capable hats?

@badp Then you can just look at the 4 lines that appear
Or 0, in this case
Grep returns lines, not true/false values

WHAT IF MY EMAIL ADDRESS WAS "foo"

@badp grep '$foo@'

That'll stlil take linear time, whereas membership check on a set is o(log(n))!

4:50 PM
Or, grep '$foo[@+]

open the file, ctrl+f, type email, press enter, duh

@badp You're spending linear time getting the lines, and again making the set

@murgatroid99 yes. And now I can run multiple checks

Anyone here used/seen an Intel 520 SSD?

4:51 PM
I sorted the list and scrolled down
lol

I'm trying to decide if I should spend $60 on it or not...

Then I remembered I could search too

@badp Actually, you're probably spending closer to n*log(n) time to make the set. It has to check membership before it can add a new element

@murgatroid99 not really

@Lazers I like the description "Expensive, cool looking, warp capable hats"

4:52 PM
@badp Then what is it doing?

you go look at the slot the element would fall in based on the value of the hash function; if the element is already there, stop working; if there's something else, use your fallback strategy and repeat.

@badp There's such a thing as hash collisions. At worst, checking a hash collision is linear

@murgatroid99 Yeah, good luck picking a worst on a set of 5,000,000 elements.

well; 4,754,335 elements.

4:54 PM
There's something irresistible about a blank mountainside that causes Chinese emperors to scribble all over them

@badp Hey, you're the one who started with discussing asymptotic analysis

@murgatroid99 And I'm the one who's claiming that, since this is a list of real data and not a hash attack, there is no need to consider that the hash function will fail so spectacularly.
Henceforth denying your claim of set creation taking o(n²) time!

@badp I didn't say that

Yes you did: linear hash collection checking per element.

4:56 PM
So that's O(n²).

Also, these stairs. I climbed these. My feet hurt just looking at them

If you have k hash buckets, adding an element to a hash set is going to take an average n/k operations

@PrivatePansy so what's your PTSD plan?

Lay on bed for three days while doing nothing but stare at ceiling

@murgatroid99 Thank you!

4:59 PM
@badp If, instead, you're using a tree set, adding an element takes an average log(n) time, which is what I was originally talking about
@Fluttershy you're welcome
