at least you won't have to actually speak
Woah, Time Lord Victorious is creepy.
@ArdaXi Waters of Mars?
This is really starting to get annoying :/
in Gaming Town Hall Chat - Questions for Candidates, 5 mins ago, by Tom Wijsman
A particular user is flooding the front page with a lot of trivial edits, in which way would you guide him to prevent other users from being annoyed for an extended duration?
Second town hall question about it, along with the meta. All of which were posted after I ceased.
Hehe.
user2334
@Wipqozn That wasn't the only incident; the recent reframing of the meta question to be solely about that was ill advised
If you are elected mod, what will you do to stop the recent rash of Wipqozn?
13:05
@ArdaXi HUR HUR HUR
@ArdaXi More calomine lotion
@Wipqozn Yes.
@MarkTrapp Well that's good to hear. Just seems like everything has been aimed at me, even though no one has been naming names.
I hate the fact the chatroom links in the sidebar don't open in a new window.
@Wipqozn :( Sorry man.
13:07
@Manaಠдಠ It's okay, I don't blame you, I only blame everybody else.
user2334
@Wipqozn It's been going on for a few days now; rarely has the front page not been consumed by retags and other minor edits since the election started
@Wipqozn Your edit's bad and you should feel bad.
@Arda No, it's "Your edits are bad and you should feel bad", silly
@MarkTrapp I have noticed that increase as well, mostly from nominees who I rarely seen on the site before nominating.
Your Your X are bad and you should feel bad snowclones are bad and you should feel bad.
listens to the sound of groans
13:11
HI @WIPQOZN
@Manaಠдಠ HELLO @MANA
Well I'm just happy to hear it's not just an isolated incident, and everyone is just blowing what I did out of proportion. Based on chat conversation the friday I started it seemed like it was perfectly fine to do. When you (@MarkTrapp) came along and pointed out otherwise I made sure to stop immediately and limit myself to 5 such edits per day, 10 edits if my initial 5 are pushed to the bottom of the active page before I head off for the night.
user2334
@Wipqozn Yeah, I was frustrated then (sorry about that!), but I considered that matter settled. My reason for asking the question in Town Hall was to see if the recent trend of "minor edits or death" was a sign of things to come. Using it as my litmus test for the election
@ArdaXi SHIFT+Click
@TomWijsman I know, but sometimes I forget.
And by window I mean tab.
@MarkTrapp Is there any way to make it so that retags and edits of already answered questions don't bump questions? That seems like it might solve some complaints while at the same time improving the questions
It's probably useful to still bump questions that don't have accepted answers yet, though
13:18
@DaveMcClelland It's bumped though as part of the peer reviewing process
@DaveMcClelland That's been asked in different forms, the problem is that you get hidden edits to questions and answers so there could slip in malicious edits into the community.
user2334
@DaveMcClelland That's by design: every edit, no matter how small, needs to be peer-reviewed. It may seem silly, but we've had people on Programmers be silly even with minor edits
If retags or edits on already answered questions weren't bumped, you could edit the question to say "LOL BUTTS" and it may go unnoticed.
@MarkTrapp Your question by itself didn't actually bother me, and I starred it. Since tag clean-up is something we need to do, but it can prove difficult if tag edits bumps questions to the front page. It bothered me somewhat combined with everything else, since it seemed like everything was aimed at me. Although I can clearly now you were not aiming that at me. Thanks for speaking up now, has made me feel better about the whole thing.
Thanks for the responses by all three of you - valid points. Perhaps there could be a new tab for "recently modified" that wouldn't bump them to the active questions?

Q: Is there a way to create a water item-slide from a creature-trap without chickens passing through it in Minecraft?

Lasse V. KarlsenI have created a vertical trap that uses water to drag unsuspecting creatures from the surface into a vertical pit, they literally fall to death. Well, except chickens, and sometimes spiders. Right now I have to open a door and enter the trap periodically to recover loot from the creatures. I ...

@MarkTrapp Indeed, that's a good example. I remember that he was angry about something I did, it's a wrong thing that he did but such things simply just happen.

From what I understand, people think candidates are making minor edits to questions just to appear that they are more active editors than they may really be to the community at large. I think that there would be less hostility toward it if they didn't get bumped on the active page and instead to a different page
~This is the world we live in. These are the hands we're given.~
~Remember when you tried to kill me twice?~
13:22
Yay for 90 minute meeting starting in 60 minutes.
@Powerlord You have another 60 minute meeting starting in less than 9 hours.
I prefer 90 minute meetings with friends involving tf2.
@Dave IMO, especially for newer sites, you need the edits on the front page for the site to appear more active. Because it is.
@badp No I don't.
anyone excited about Bastion, and From Dust today!?
13:23
You'll notice I didn't post a nomnomnom.
@Manaಠдಠ I agree - really, I think that people should be less hostile to candidates who are editing. Even if they have ulterior motives, they are legitimately improving the site, and they deserve such credit
So? You can still make bacon jokes and annoy Rebecca with them while making other people who nomnomated uncomfortable. Sounds like your kinda stuff :P
@DaveMcClelland There shouldn't be minor edit floods like that, it's as simple as that. People should focus more on quality than quantity...
@TomWijsman The fact still remains that platform tags used for games themselves rather than general questions about the platform need to go.
@Mana @DaveMcClelland I dunno. I think trying to beef up an activity record at election time is an unfortunate practice. Either you're consistently active or you're not . A flurry of activity aimed at getting votes doesn't seem trustworthy to me. What's gonna happen when the election is over?
4
13:25
@Manaಠдಠ Exactly. The issue isn't that one or two questions have them, it's that a sizable proportion of them do.
user2334
@Wipqozn Sorry about that :/ I'd just like to see Gaming, as a community, figure something out that's equitable because I really like visiting Gaming and browsing the front page whenever I get a few minutes :P
@TomWijsman I agree that quality is more important, but if the edits are truly improving the question then why chastise the editor?
@Mana: Consider that they can go without bumping a single edit onto the front page. Retag requests are made for this purpose, a moderator can do it for you...
@AnnaLear Then make a note about it and don't vote for that person in the election. That's why it's a community process, right?
Sorry- wrong person. That was meant for you, @AnnaLear
@TomWijsman This isn't a matter of deleting a tag, it's a matter of removing it on only certain questions.
13:27
@DaveMcClelland Absolutely. I'm not saying it's an unfair practice to other nominees or anything like that. My point is more that I don't think the solution here is to make edits bump questions to a different page.
@DaveMcClelland What kind of edits are you referring to? Quality and quantity often does not go together, so if they do improve quality rather than being a trivial edit there shouldn't be an edit flood that goes from top to bottom...
@AnnaLear Fair enough; to be fair I wasn't really paying attention to other people beefing up their activity.
@AnnaLear I strongly agree. You want someone working on the site because they actually care, not because they want a shiny diamond next to their name.
@AnnaLear That makes sense - I thought the argument against the practice was more along the lines of "that person keeps bumping to the front page and getting their name seen by a lot more people in the community"
@TomWijsman Something like retagging - it's a rather trivial edit, but it makes the question much easier to be found if done correctly
After all the real moderators are the guys patrolling all the questions raising flags for us to see
3
13:29
@Manaಠдಠ That indeed makes more sense, but I would still suggest to plan to do it together than a single user doing them all at once. If there is a moderator (which can do silent edits, I'm not entirely sure) that wants to jump in and edit as well that's still better than doing these things alone.
I agree @Tom, and that's why I suggested that we hold off on edit sprees until after the elections are all done and settled.
@MarkTrapp Which can probably be difficult if the entire front page was filled with "Wipqozn removed the MMORPG tag!" on the entire front page :P
Ok, 8.5 hours before Town Hall, so I have to get the apartment cleaned, pack, and make sure I've got enough laundry done before then so I can leave tomorrow morning. Gonna AFK for now so I can get some of this work done.
@DaveMcClelland True, on Super User you get away with such necessary tag edits and nobody really cares. But on Gaming the amount of activity is a lot lower so we have to take care of the front page or it won't help if we run around with T-shirts and other promotional stuff if all there is on the webpage are questions that look very similar because of recent edits.
If you delete a tag from the site itself, that wouldn't bump up questions, correct?
13:32
@Wipqozn Yes, it would not.
@TomWijsman That's why I suggested bumping edits to a different page. Maybe instead have a filter that will filter edit bumps? I don't know, there's a lot of potential solutions and I'm not sure what would work best
@Manaಠдಠ In that case, maybe the best solution would be to just delete the genre tags, and then re-tag the questions which should have had them in the first place.
The number of questions which should have the genre tags is significantly less then the questions that shouldn't.
@Wipqozn The problem there is that it would make finding the questions which had them to begin with more difficult.
@Manaಠдಠ We would make a list of them before hand.
@DaveMcClelland: The only way to actually get a change in this is to do an actual study on the already done feature-requests on this subject, and then think of an actual system that really works. Worst case the feature-request gets down-voted into oblivion, but you have at least learned why it is not a good idea.
13:34
@DaveMcClelland I really think the solution is for the people doing the edits to do the right thing and not edit everything at once. Edited questions being bumped to the front page is a valuable sanity check and occasionally can also get some new attention on an old unanswered question.
We could make a file on google docs which contained the list, and users could strike them out as they re-tagged them.
@Mvy: I think your question would sound better if it mentioned "Why so serious?"
Didn't really think of that. Hmm...it could work, I suppose @Wipqozn. But again, I think we can worry about this once elections are done.
@Powerlord wrooong chaaaat
@Manaಠдಠ In case you didn't notice, mods are aggressively pruning chat in the other room.
oh
so they are.
13:35
As for example, to be more specific: People that edit their own question need to have their edits be bumped on the front-page. And there are many cases like that where an edit actually needs to be shown, hiding edits away and having nobody (or only X users) check them isn't a good idea.
@Wipqozn @Mana A meta post is a great way to organize something like that. :)
Perhaps the concept of having trusted prolific editors? Still dangerous though...
@Mvy: Oh, and if you could make it sound like the Joker said it for the rest of the question, that'd be even better.
@TomWijsman That was my other idea - but I thought that was the entire purpose of getting edit privileges with 2000 rep anyway
@Powerlord It is basically a way to get to know our candidates. Plus I I don't want someone that cannot understand gaming to be mod :P
13:37
Honestly, we're all human and we all occasionally make mistakes. Even moderators' actions are logged and public as much as possible and there is arguably no position on a site that should be more trusted.
@Powerlord The Joker? LOL

Q: How to change the color of Razer Mamba?

DelphyI just bought a Razer Mamba and I was in the process of configuring it when I noticed that the "Lighting and Power" tab was just "Lighting" and didn't give me the option to change thing. I've seen Youtube videos and I'm wondering how to get the same Razer Configuration program as all these other ...

@TomWijsman I dislike the "all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than other animals" philosophy going on there. Except for mods/admins and very special cases (i.e. CHAOS) I think that we should stick to the rep system and the bumping system and not have different classes of users.
@Wipqozn I would think that it's unnecessary to be that specific, just the statement of questions that are tagged X but have Y don't need tag X would be enough to determine what questions need their tag removed. A meta question should fit that purpose...
@AnnaLear Yeah I'll make one.
13:38
@Lazers Wouldn't this be better suited to SU? Just because Razer mice are frequently used by gamers, it's not entirely gaming related
@DaveMcClelland I agree
@Manaಠдಠ Indeed, as Jeff Atwood says there isn't an actual problem regarding edits bumping the front page. But it is still annoying to some people because it isn't planned out well...
@Manaಠдಠ Even edits done by mods bump questions. Title editing by CHAOS is/was the only exception I'm aware of and even now they're going through suggested edit mechanism for it. It's always been peer-reviewable.
@Manaಠдಠ I can't vote to close, so I'll let you high-rep folks do your magic
@TomWijsman The reason for that is to remove all the tags without bumping all the questions to the front page.
13:39
Someone suggested it back on meta, it isn't my idea, that's why I say it's dangerous.
@Anna I know, I wasn't talking about editing specifically, I was talking about just having more privileges in spite of reputation
@Wipqozn Unless you want to remove the whole tag, there is as Anna Lear just set no way to do that.
@TomWijsman i think you need to re-read my suggestion, because I think you misread it.
@Mana Oh, sorry. Nevermind. I missed the "and the bumping system" part. :)
@TomWijsman Because removing the whole tag is exactly what I was suggesting. After which you would then you would go in and add the genre tags back in to the questions which should have had them in the first place.
13:42
It's cool, I tend to not write very coherent sentences in situations like this (and all situations in general)
@Wipqozn No... If there is an edit job that necessarily needs to be done, there are two options:
I wish installing the TooManyItems mod didn't mean mucking around with minecraft.jar
@Mana It's all my bad. My attention is split 3 ways right now.
@badp TooManyMods?
1. Working together and doing it as fast as possible to keep the mass flood as short as possible, afterwards you simply edit/answer some recent questions to return the page to normal activity.
2. A single user that does the edits to the posts out over time, so that 2 or 3 edits are shown every 15-20 questions on the front page.
user2334
13:43
@badp I really dislike using mods, but I made an exception for TooManyItems because of McPatcher. Made it really easy to add it and remove it
I'll look at it then
I can't wait for official mod support though.
In none of these options it's really necessary to put up a separate Google Docs to collaboratively track the progress, it can be done but you just lose time on it...
@Mvy You've never heard the "Why so serious?" line from The Dark Knight?
@Powerlord Ah yes! Did not match the quote!
@Wipqozn Ah, in that case, a list is indeed handy to have. Seems I missed that detail, didn't know we were still talking about that...
13:45
Besides, I only saw the Dark Knight in English once.
@TomWijsman I like that idea, and I had thoughts about doing something similar. However I think instead of making the edits afterwards, you should have a user who is editing recent questions while the other users are doing the mass minor edits. This way even when the edits are being made the page should still have recent posts on it.
@Mvy I've only seen it in English once, too!
@Wipqozn: That happens naturally, you could of course boost it.
In the theater, but still...
Plus this method would work for any type of edits, and not just mass re-tagging.
@TomWijsman The issue is if you're doing mass edits, even in a small time frame, it would still destroy the front page for a time.
13:47
@Wipqozn The problem is, that users won't keep up with the flood.
@TomWijsman Yeah, you're probably right. That user would probably be better served making the mass flood go faster.
@Powerlord Is it you native language? :P
@Wipqozn Indeed, they should only be done when really necessary.
@Mvy Yes. :P
@Mvy He's American, so no :P
13:48
@Powerlord That changes a lot :P
@Wipqozn LOL
@Wipqozn: Also, consider that they can be done at the least active time of the week. On Super User this is Saturday Night...
@TomWijsman Yeah, I think that goes without saying.
I'll make a meta post suggesting both my suggestion, to simply delete and retag; and yours to do the mass edits in a short time span. See if the community would be up for doing either, and if so which they prefer.
@Wipqozn Also, it's important to open a bunch of tags and do the actual edits in advance. And then click them all through to the front page, when I did this on Super User to do CHAOS-like work I didn't even get the Captcha once. Right after, I just went through the recent questions to restore the top half back to normal activity. Funny enough, the captcha appeared when editing one of the recent questions...
@Wipqozn It depends on the size of the questions that need to remain with the tag versus the amount of questions that are currently tagged with that tag...
@TomWijsman Oh my, you just made me think of something. During my mass edits I never once came across a captcha. Could this be a bug?
I would say that it's best to go for the least work.

Q: Ideas for improving my Sudoku game

vsyncI am looking for ideas to improve my Sudoku game in cool ways, if you can think of any, please drop a line. thanks. http://www.sudokubum.com/

@TomWijsman Yeah, I'm going to take a look through the questions that would need to be re-tagged before I make the meta, to see how many that need the tag vs. who don't
FLAG WEIGHT HERE I COME
@Wipqozn: It could've been to my relative high reputation, but I doubt if it's implemented to be a modifier in the time till the captcha. Perhaps it was triggered too much so they changed the rate limit?
@TomWijsman The latter is more likely. It seems unlikely that having high rep would make the captcha appear more often.
@Wipqozn: I mean, less often.
13:55
@TomWijsman Ah okay, I misunderstood.
@Wipqozn: But it could indeed be a hole in the system: One could work his way up to 2000 reputation on Super User, which can be done in 2 weeks if you really want to. And then flood the whole home page with really useless content...
@MarkTrapp Hm, well, adding the .zip file to the list of mods didn't really help
Well, on other communities too, but at a slower pace in terms of gaining reputation...
oh. right. I need to press Patch at some point.
who woulda thunk
user2334
Heh
13:58
@badp Don't press that button! Never press the RED button!
@Powerlord But... the button is BLU!
user2334
@badp You might have to create a mods folder in your minecraft folder and patch it from there. I didn't have any luck selecting the zip file from any location

Sort of like the texturepacks folder

@GnomeSliceツ yeah that's my favorite one
So, I finished Shakugan no Shana (first season) yesterday. Now, should I bother watching the movie or just go to season 2?
I'm thinking that one'd have to be landscape, but most posters are portrait...

@RonanForman Nah, it wouldn't. The corpse isn't the main character, just have like only the head and shoulders visible.
good idea, any suggestions for the design of the mascot?
@RonanForman I think something generic would be good.
Although I'm aware that's a very generic term (lolololololol)

@GnomeSliceツ THIS
@GnomeSliceツ What? Who? How? Why?
@sjohnston THAT.
@GnomeSliceツ Damn you, now the song's stuck in my head

@GnomeSliceツ no idea what that is.
Although it looks like something from the original Star Trek
