The good news about my new armor set is that it's significantly lighter than the Elite Knight set. I can now wield a tower shield with the rest of my equipment.

In fact, I still have enough weight load leftover that I'm considering swapping out the Archdrake Gloves with Elite Knight Gloves.

I'm also thinking about replacing the Saint's Trousers because they require Twinkling Titanite to upgrade.

Speaking of Twinkling Titanite, I should probably go farm some at the Shrine of Amana.

I would use the Drakekeeper Greatshield, but I don't have enough Strength and I don't like popping 7 levels just so I can wield one shield.

Tower Shield is a good all-around.

You could also kill the merchant for the +1 ring, but I think 10,000 souls is pretty easy to get.

Not to mention killing a non-hostile NPC penalizes you with Sin.

He already parried him at low health. Pretty much a guaranteed win right there.

It drops off an NPC phantom in NG+. And unlike the other phantoms, he only drops one piece at a time.

So you'll be dropping ascetics left and right to get that set together.

If you're in NG, the first ascetic will make that area act like NG+.

If you're in NG+, ascetic will raise it to NG++.

So on and so forth.

And the effect is carried over when you clear and restart.

So, if you used an ascetic and the area is NG+ in your first playthrough, it'll be NG++ when you clear the storyline and restart.

By NG+++, some of the monsters (namely giants) will one-shot no matter how much defense/health you have.

If you have a 100% physical reduction shield, they'll eat up all your stamina for the block and finish you with a second hit.

I think reading the "no direct influence" made me think of one thing and the actual game did something else.

Permadeath. There are stakes! It really matters how well you play because when you die, that's it. A new world is generated for you to start fresh.
Non-random entities are a part of the random genration so that you can still memorise & exploit patterns.
Classes that you can choose from to vary your play. Unlock new ones by finding secrets!
