so okay, I want to play my xbox via a window on my PC monitor. input's no problem, controller's wireless. audio/video seems like I could capture the HDMI and stream it to my PC, and there must be some way to do that, I'm sure the tech exists.

I can't quite find the right "thang" that I would plug between the xbox and the tv to encode and stream the video, though

@agent86 bad enough to make most games that weren't turn based unplayable. But again, this was a good 5 years ago. And steam is a bad comparison - the latency was in the capture the HDMI portion, not the stream to my computer portion.

come to think of it, this is one of my areas of expertise... I wonder if I can get a SOC on a devkit that has HDMI in. I can probably build what I want, although I doubt I can build it cheaper than something commercially available.

@badp I've done it, so yes it's possible :) Not with HDMI in, but with another input source. It takes a pretty beefy SoC. A lot of them have hardware encoder blocks. The one I used was an i.MX6

@les I think the main bottleneck is probably RAM. Downscaling early would reduce the footprint considerably and make all following proceeding easier. I'm not sure it's enough though

although I had one not too long ago from Korea, an ODroid, I think it was called. that thing was a monster, and it ran X pretty darn well

I don't recall what the chip was inside it

mostly it's the android smartphone revolution that is driving these SoCs; they're getting some pretty advanced features and the cost is dropping as a result
