@kalina Being suspicious is not rude
09:20
@badp it doesn't hide messages...

@badp Air cake is so delicious
@badp and special for @kalina firecake
Fire contains 0 calories
Part of a healthy diet
And setting people on fire
Fire actually burns up calories
09:24
@fredley in fact it burns calories
inb4 @Wandang
DAMN YOU KALINA
I HATE YOU !!!!
@Wandang Only if what you're burning contains calories in the first place
@fredley "fire in the hole"
@Wandang No you don't, you think I'm the best person in the bridge
09:25
@kalina well you are perfect...ly not
@Wandang Worst use of quotes ever
@fredley given that calories are a measure of energy... jeah they contain it
@KevinvanderVelden Iron burns. Iron does not contain calories.
@fredley it's a sexual innuendo, obviously
3
@kalina ^_^
09:26
@fredley 1 calorie = 4.18400 joules
1.21 gigafires
@KevinvanderVelden Man, no wonder I've been getting fat, it's all that iron I've been eating
when this baby hits 88 miles per hour, you're going to see some serious shit
@kalina Those are tiny fires.
@MartinSojka I'm sure you're about to dazzle confuse me with science demonstrating your point
09:27
i except all units as long as they are standard physical ones
How far up do you have to go before you get to the prefix 'lotta'?
NO english pounds and shit
3 Lotta Bytes
i prefer bits
"Bitte ein Bit" = One Bit please
good beer
@Wandang I agree
09:30
@Wandang Does it involve bitcoins?
@Wandang I prefer Krušovice
@kalina I don't see the need.
@badp no, dogecoins!
fine!
Anyway, "calories" refer specifically to the amount of energy an animal's body can extract from a molecule. Essentially, the parts that don't end up in the citric acid cycle (entering either as acetyl-CoA, succinyl-CoA or pyruvate) don't matter. Like iron.
As such, it also depends on the organism. The same molecule can have different amounts of calories for a human compared to a lizard, depending on which of them can actually break it down and process it.
09:40
Calories are also the only thing of which a thousand equals one.
Nah, that's just silly confusion caused by lazy people who don't understand or forget "kilo".
Well yes.
But what I'm saying is that the confusion is quite unique, innit.
Nobody would pretend a byte and a kilobyte are the same thing. Or a meter and a kilometer.
Thus, I prefer to use "(biologically usable) kJ" when calculating nutritional facts.
@RegDwigнt Yet there are two "kilobytes".
@FEichinger I like to call one of them "chibibytes". The bigger one, to be more confusing.
09:47
i will assure you that "bring me one byte please" will confuse people
@FEichinger Right. Hm.
Actually there are more than two.
I think Wikipedia had a whole table full of them.
Or perhaps it was XKCD.
@MartinSojka anyway, the bit about biologically usable is news to me. I think the way we were taught back in fifth grade, it was just warmth. If you can burn it, it's a calorie.
Teachers are always such liars.
Always oversimplifying things.
And then never correcting themselves later on.
@RegDwigнt The original definition was something about heat (before it was clear it was the same as energy), but that's a few centuries ago and it's not an official unit anymore, so it refers to just biologically usable part by now.
I see.
But how would you go about calculating which heat is biologically usable and which is not?
For the most part, we know the pathways good enough to simply calculate it. Before that ... well, careful measuring basically. :)
But is there a standard organism to measure against?
I mean, there's a lot of energy available to a cow that is not available to me.
I'm not even talking about plants.
09:57
Homo sapiens, since very few people bother with cooking for other animals, and when there's a need to fatten them up for the slaughter the general rule is "the more, the better, as long as they eat it."
morning @RegDwigнt
Ah, okay.
hello @kalina
I actually have the CD.
Somewhere...
