14:00
@GraceNote I did. Still nothing.
it's like "ARGH" but all Gracenote-y
@3ventic Heated arguments were never really a solution, nor are they a necessity.
@GnomeSlice Say it again.
"Gracenoty" is a nice word.
@Sterno Sorry, lower
14:00
@Wipqozn I've said it like a billion times
Relative, not absolute.
@GraceNote Agreed, but they seem to be unavoidable wherever I go..
@GnomeSlice Then say it a billion more. If that doesn't work, say it another billion times. Surely the third billionth time will be the charm!
We've had our fair share of heated arguments but we've also found methods to get around that.
14:01
and I don't think I'm causing them either since I usually just listen until it's heated already
Are we heated right now?
I don't think we are.
I would much rather people take some time before asking questions than say "UH OH PROBLEM GOTTA ASK A QUESTION" the second they hit a pebble.
@Sterno No, not right now.
LOOK EVERYONE I CANCELED THE STAR ON MY OWN MESSAGE
14:03
I CANCELLED A STAR ON ANOTHER MESSAGE!
I like this game of owner abuse!
I don't think I have anything new to contribute to this conversation, so don't assume I'm agreeing, but I'm going to stop going in circles. :)
STOP STARRING THAT ONE STAR THIS ONE INSTEAD
What is so great about stars anyway
Oh for heaven's sake ...
Star canceling is literally worse than Hitler.
14:03
Y'all make me feel left out :(
Can we just, I dunno, stop clearing stars?
9
@FEichinger Sure, as soon as we stop starring inane things.
@Sterno In similar fashion, don't assume I am yelling, I'm just prepping for my AutoCAD work today.
@fbueckert That is, quite frankly, bullshit.
@FEichinger As is starring crap.
14:04
@fbueckert You don't get to decide what's inane.
You abusers are going to end up making me lose room owner status and the precious ability to read deleted messages.
@FEichinger Heh, frankly...
So it's par for the course.
@GnomeSlice Yes he does.
@Wipqozn Oh, okay.
14:04
@fbueckert I'm confused how to parse this considering a good portion of stars are to the inane and silly, and appreciably so by the community.
@OrigamiRobot I didn't assume such, and I can agree with that!
Uuuuuuugh... Is it home time yet?
Or did you mean that as a rhetorical question?
@GraceNote Silly I don't mind. Out of context things I don't mind either.
14:05
@OrigamiRobot Did any of the users asking give a timeframe for how long they've been stuck at a question?
@Sterno Or rather, the AutoCAD work that I am going to put off and stay here isntead.
@fbueckert if you're clearing stars you think are silly, I humbly suggest this is not a good room for you to be owner in.
14
@Powerlord It was to a point, rhetorical, but to another point I could've also said game rec... had we not come to a begrudging consensus on that.
@Sterno I just finished saying I don't mind silly.
@fbueckert That's silly.
14:06
@fbueckert i type slow on the ipad. Screw this. Time to go to my pc
@Wipqozn I wasn't talking about any specific case. You can usually tell by the question.
@Wipqozn To a point it's not so much literal the time spent on the problem at hand but also logical grouping of the problem itself, I think is a fair point.
I only clear stars when, in the middle of a serious (for here anyway) discussion, people are clogging up the star list with things related to that discussion. That's what meta is for.
Sweet, sweet keyboard. You making typing fun!
Let's all remember the text on the star: "star this message as useful / interesting for the transcript"
3
14:08
@GraceNote I agree, but it all comes back to that view that "You're wrong to ask this in the first place", which I disagree with.
I'm pretty sure the only situation where I'd clear a star is if it's done specifically to be mean or hurtful. "Hey guys, my aunt just died and I'm sad" STARRED
What people tend to keep calling "passive aggressive starring" is precisely what the star list is to be used for.
@FEichinger Yes, because the literal application is the only usage to which it is applied.
@Wipqozn I don't think of it as "wrong" so much as just hasty and/or concentrated. It's not a fault, just a different logical approach.
@FEichinger This is The Bridge. Come on.
14:09
@fbueckert It's the precise usage that has been cleared a lot of times recently.
When one is encountering a piece of a problem that is profoundly irritating, it's natural to ask about that piece of the problem rather than the whole. That ain't wrong in a general sense.
morning bridge
Oh no, now people are starring things in a serious discussion about starring. I'm so conflicted now.
2
@FEichinger Because it detracts from the discussion at hand.
I kind of feel like room owners should not be trying to control the narrative via star clearing. I mean, yeah, you have that power. The Bridge culture really doesn't support that, though.
14:11
@fbueckert I beg to differ. It keeps track of a reasonably important discussion's cornerstones for people who missed said discussion.
In some cases that ends up fine. In other cases, a step back and that author could expand it. Getting someone to expand on a question about a piece, into the whole parcel, that's not saying they asked the wrong thing. It's quite like the variety of other guidances we give to help structure the problem someone asked into something we are better suited to answering.
@Sterno I make star clearings when something NSFW is starred without a warning around it, or is a direct insult to another user.
@Sterno That's not really controlling the narrative; it's not like we can delete messages out of hand.
Mind you I'm sure that's not the kind of thing you were talking about.
(Not to mention that I'd rather see five stars than five times "Hey, I agree with that." in chat, but that's beside the point.)
14:12
@fbueckert It is. You're deeming what is or is not worthy of being on the list for future visitors to notice.
Oh the joys of Hallowmas.
@Wipqozn No, that seems like pretty much the only case it should happen
You get to meet the most interesting people.
@RedRiderX ~This is Halloween, everybody make a scene~
Or some random troll getting in here, maybe. Like when we all went to the DMZ and starred things. And by "we", I mean "you jerks", not me.
14:13
@Sterno I think we're going to agree to disagree on this one.
@Powerlord But this is The Feast of Masks, when opposites meet at midnight!
I still feel that starring things when in the middle of a discussion diverts from having a proper discussion.
@GraceNote That's fine, but the problem here is that almost every riddle already was asked and answered about, and then a user came along afterwards and made a collection question which they self-answered.
@fbueckert I'm probably going to keep disagreeing with you, because room owners doing this, and room owners being an unelected, clique-y thing, could make this toxic.
@Sterno here's some drama for ya, now I'm disagreeing with my supporters!
14:14
@Wipqozn This is a trickier situation.
@MBraedley That is actually a situation where I'd say keep 'em separate. It meets the scope criteria, but not the relatedness. That said, I also think those were terrible questions to begin with. It's pretty obvious where to go to start each of the DLCs. — OrigamiRobot 29 secs ago
Granted they are fairly similar.
@fbueckert The problem is that I think the majority of us disagree with you.
I know it makes me feel defensive when arguing my point of view, and having the dissenting viewpoint starred.
THis isn't a case of a question organically coming into existence, where the user had a problem with one of the riddles and then asked a question about all of them. The entire point of asking was to close all the other questions as a dup of it, and have the information in one place.
I think that's why it bothers @Sterno so much, because it wasn't organic. It was very much so forced.
14:15
I'd say that organizing is not actually a sin if it makes logical sense, as long as the intent is to make a logical grouping. That said, I don't know enough about the game to know if this was a good time to use it.
For what it's worth, despite arguing heavily against closing all those singular questions, I'm actually not all that far from being on @OrigamiRobot's side of things. Some of you may remember when I tried to create a blanket question for questions. It didn't go well.
Not only that, but the only blue-name present seems to be actively avoiding getting involved in the conversation about stars.
...Except, we have a blanket question for that now.
This is a different case, but I do tend to prefer the grouped questions over the non-grouped ones.
@Sterno I remember that.
user15026
14:16
wishes she had a proper machine so she could poke and understand what is going on
If you guys feel that strongly about it, fine, I'll stop clearing stars.
@Sterno As do I, provided the scope and relatedness is good.
@AshleyNunn We're arguing about that candy box question and the merits of star clearing.
@AshleyNunn Wait... you have a blue name again?
@fbueckert We do, but we also still have a ton of unclosed versions of it for specific games
14:17
Question: Did every squirrel riddle get asked before the group question?
@Sterno I have close votes! Point me at 'em!
user15026
@powerlord Pets mod!
@AshleyNunn Woo!
@GraceNote So far, yes. I think.
..."so far"?
user15026
14:18
@wipqozn I don't like star clearing unless things get really egregious and like atomic bomb style terrible.
That was an easy yes-or-no why must you make it complicated argh
@GraceNote Meaning no one has asked a dupe since the big one was asked.
@AshleyNunn Hey that's great!
You can once again partake in the joys of mod abuse.
@OrigamiRobot Let me rephrase. Is every Squirrel Riddle in the game, covered by the collection of the individual riddle questions we got?
14:19
@AshleyNunn I feel the same way, in addition to the other situations I said (direct insults and unmarked NSFW material)
I didn't realize these were actually getting closed now. Last I looked at it, the plan had failed miserably.
I'm not even sure I support it anymore.
Although I only ever clear stars for those situations I stated.
@GraceNote Oh, I misread.
@Sterno As I find them, I dupe them to our catch all one.
I was under the impression that was exactly why we had it.
@GraceNote first one isn't
14:20
@fbueckert It was the plan. It didn't really work out.
Mmkay.
I don't want to look it up because it's a huge pain to look for the individual question.
Mainly because it's so trivial no one needed to ask it
@Sterno I dunno; it seems to be working out pretty decently.
user15026
@wipqozn makes sense to me, that is covered in my atomic bomb category.
14:20
The first one being "yes" to the question "Do you like candies?", which apparently no one has gotten stuck on yet.
I'd be more partial to keeping the individual questions. Maybe including some links betwixt them, but at this point, if we've got 5/6 already on the site, then we've already got all the data.
@Sterno I wonder if, "Is that a trick question?" would be a valid answer.
23
A: How should we handle questions about game completion time?

SternoI think it would be nice to have one semi-generic question for "How can I find out how long it will take me to beat a game?" This one is pretty close, though not exactly perfect: How can I tell how long (more or less) it will take me to complete a game? Close (but don't delete) all questions ab...

@Sterno So it basically wasn't a question at all.
Some history for you.
14:21
@Sterno Who would ever answer "no" to that?
Hmm... TF2 Halloween update should be today, unless Valve is being slow.
@GraceNote This is how I feel. If we only had 2/6, go nuts, but we didn't.
@Sterno Yet people got stuck on spelling "candies" backwards....
@OrigamiRobot Somebody wearing braces?
@Wipqozn This is a condensation of my logic, basically.
14:22
@GraceNote It's important to be concise!
@TZHX Well, if "no" didn't work, try "yes"
@Sterno This was back when all my experiences with you were this and the chat thing and so I hated you.
@fbueckert Nop
@Sterno I upvoted that, and I dupe game completion question as I run into them.
14:23
@Sterno That's putting more effort into finding your own answer than we generally expect of people, I think.
@TZHX ...a two second test is more effort than we expect?
Since when?
@TZHX Clearly, it's what happened for this particular riddle though, since no one asked about it.
It's hard to claim that anyone was going to ask about the first question when no one did.
@fbueckert This is the internet. I don't expect anyone to test anything.

Q: What constitutes a bash?

BeofettThe basic "Bash" attack card has the ability of "Add 2 damage to any other Bash you play. Keep.". The "Bruiser" Martial Skill has the same ability. What cards qualify as a "Bash"? Is it only cards that have the exact name of "Bash", or is it any card that has "bash" in the name, or any melee ...

Q: How Do I get into the castle walls?

YamsI already have the pink and red leather gloves, the armor, the crown, and the monkey's staff (and they're all enchanted). Regardless of how many health potions I use, I always die. Help!

14:25
@OrigamiRobot Then I guess I'm more naive than you.
Because I do expect askers to make an attempt to solve it on their own. Unless the game just came out, and there's a serious lack of reference material.
@fbueckert That would be nice and preferred, but I don't expect it at all.
I expect that from good askers.
Now I want to know if it accepts "Indeed" as an answer
munches popcorn
I feel like i am the only one who doesnt or hasn't played candy-box-2 lol
user15026
@fluttershy steals some
14:28
I played roughly to the squirrel, got bored, and quit
user15026
@zerostack I don't play it.
@ZeroStack I've no intention of playing it. I never even touched the first one.
@Sterno nope
Fun fact: I absolutely hate popcorn. <_< When I was 6, I broke a molar on an unpopped kernel while watching Jurassic Park. It was traumatizing.
@GraceNote Me either, rebels unite!
14:28
I had just bought the merchant's hat, then my powers blinked :(
@ZeroStack I haven't either, nor do I intend to.
candy Box 1 was enough for me.
@Fluttershy I eat all the unpopped kernels.
@Fluttershy You hate popcorn and cake? You're a monster.
user15026
@fluttershy more popcorn for me
I understand the appeal of creating such a game, but not of playing it.
user15026
14:29
@origami what why
Oh wow. well i stand corrected. Time to add another item to the ignore list lol
@AshleyNunn They're good and crunchy.
@OrigamiRobot You're weird, but that's also part of why you're awesome, so keep on keepin' on.
@Wipqozn The popcorn is the monster in this story. Not me! I was just minding my own business, watching someone hack a Unix system, and BAM! No tooth.
WHY DO YOU WANT ME TO LOG IN WITH GOOGLE+, YOUTUBE? FU
14:30
@TimStone No here either. I refuse to play that game until I complete Progress Quest
@Fluttershy "This is a UNIX system... I know this..."

Q: Assasination Missions. How to invest money and make more money?

DreddI have finished the main story and all my main characters ended up making close to 31 Million apiece from the Big one. I only finished one Assassination mission so far which was the Hotel assassination, but i didn't play others because people advised me to reserve the Assassination missions to th...

Q: Locked chests in the dungeon: where to find the keys and what to expect inside?

kotekzotThe 1.2 update added some new locked chests to the dungeon. Where can I find their matching keys and what can I expect to find inside these chests? Are the rewards unique? Will I need to generate many worlds to get all significant rewards from these chests?

This could have been a bunch of little questions about each dungeon chest, but one question about all of them is better.
@OrigamiRobot Overall I like things grouped. Where it gets weird is when games add updates, and now you need to bounty some ancient question that covers everything to get an answer about something new.
14:33
@kalina Except it really was a UNIX system. IRIX specifically.
(unrelated to the squirrel problem, as it is unlikely to get 100 new riddles)

Q: Minecraft Launcher Problem

KyleI was recently using Nodus and added my account and everything said bad login so i closed minecraft and tried to log back in and it said credidentail exception and all of my info is right all servers of minecraft are up and running what is up with that?

@Sterno Yea, that's a good point, but better than having to update a million individual questions.
I'm not up on my MC lingo; what in this question is pointing out that it's pirated?
How a teenage girl in the 90s would know a specific obscure 3D shell to a UNIX only used on high-end SGI workstations (used to make movies), though...
14:34
@fbueckert Nodus is a hack client, apparently.
@fbueckert Nodus is a client that can be used for hacking.
@tombull89 Does it allow play without authentication?
The dev quit working on it because while it was supposed to be used by admins to run servers it was being abused.
Also, the terraria wiki probably has those chests on separate pages which is awful.
@fbueckert Not that I know of, never used it personally.
14:35
@Sterno I find this latter point relevant but also equally irrelevant. It is fully valid, though.
Hrm. I think I'll leave that one alone.
The irrelevance stems from the fact that any question can really suffer from "DIG THE ANCIENT GRAVES THAT WANT NOT TO BE DISTURBED" and in fact I recall an editing fiasco from a few weeks back about this very same issue. Like many, if not every, things else about gaming, our system is not very well suited to handling updates that absolutely change the correctness of existing content.
DIG THE ANCIENT GRAVES THAT WANT NOT TO BE DISTURBED is a great sentence.
Morning, Bridge
@SaintWacko Yes, it is morning.
14:39
@SaintWacko You're not @fbueckert. WHAT ARE YOU PLAYING AT?
@GraceNote I am not proposing that we ban such questions, or even that we're bad. Just that they're not without downsides.
@Wipqozn No, @fbueckert would call it a good morning.
@Wipqozn He made no claims as to the quality of said morning.
peers at @Wipqozn Eh?
Oh, right, carry on.
14:40
One could theoretically retroactively scope the older question to just cover the older content, and open a new question for the new version or DLC or whatever
@Sterno ...where at all did banning come into play here?
@GraceNote I'm unclear on exactly what you thought I was saying.
I was commenting on a downside to such questions. I'm not sure where relevance or lack thereof comes into play unless you thought my comment had a goal behind it.
You were saying "Having a compilation question may get complicated when say, a game updates, because then if someone wants to ask about the new stuff they have to bounty up an ancient question in hopes for an update", yes?
@GraceNote Indeed. I would say they are more prone to it than other questions, since they inherently try to cover all the small things, and small things tend to be what gets added.
I don't necessarily feel they are more prone to it than other things because the scope of compilations can vary, and the scope of gravediggeryliches is rather widespread in being "Entirely unpredictable you stupid loaches".
14:44
@GraceNote I don't think we're disagreeing about anything.
I'm honestly unsure what we're talking about at this point.
We never were.
You made a comment, I made a related commentary. Not every form of discourse is birthed from conflict.
I'm also having 2 other conversations elsewhere and had 3 hours of sleep so I'm losing the thread easily.
@GraceNote I know. This always makes me so sad. Opportunities for drama, squandered!
@Sterno Were you up all night with SkyDrift?
@GraceNote Yes it is! You're wrong!
@OrigamiRobot Skydrift is amazing.
14:48
How old is she right now anyway?
@Sterno One of these years, she's going to wander into this chat room, we're going to start calling her Skydrift, and she's gonna wonder what the hell just happened.
@GraceNote 16 months
She has strep throat right now, so her sleep is troubled.
Uf. I hope she gets well soon.
@fbueckert If we're all still here and understand that reference by the time she's old enough, I'll be both amazed and a little scared.
@fbueckert It's never too late to add a middle name!
14:50
Man, strep throat is the worst.
@Sterno Would you be most scared about the fact that we'll have managed to identify your daughter swiftly?
@GraceNote Clearly her user name will be "@Sterno's Daughter"
I should go grab her a gmail account.
Were SkyDrift's first words "No" or "I disagree"?
@Wipqozn I figured we'd just cut the middleman and just ensure her display name is SkyDrift.
14:52
@GraceNote This.
@OrigamiRobot bottle (ba-ba), outside (out-go), kitty (kitty!), dog (woof woof!), and uh-oh were all tied for first
That's right. Dogs are woof-woofs
Jin
Jin
@kalina penis
That flag was predictable.
cya soon!
Unnecessary messages are unnecessary
14:54
"Penis" survived the cleansing, somehow?
@Sterno out-go!
Oh, you self-removed that.
@Sterno I removed my message because it wasn't necessary
That is the best.
Yeah, out-go is pretty awesome.
SkyDrift is adorable.
14:55
Oh for heaven's sake.
I saw the number 5 by the flag circle. Was that 5 different messages flagged, the same message flagged 5 times, or what?
@Sterno Same message flagged 5 times apparently.
Jin
Jin
I got Tales of Xillia yesterday. pretty neat jrpg
@Sterno Same message flagged 5 times. Note that everytime someone presses "Valid" it gets another flag.
Not sure what people have against giant chickens.
14:57
@Wipqozn I wasn't sure that's how the number in the circle worked.
From what I understand that's just the net score of VALID - INVALID, where valid is every flag on the message + everytime someone hit Valid on the flag message.
@Sterno IMO that's not how it should work, but apparently that's how it does work.
@Jin The sequel comes out early next year!
I got Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies yesterday.
14:58
It actually kinda bugs me how many typos I've seen so far.
@Sterno It just means that there's five flags, distributed over n messages
Are we really leaving her banned? Yes it was obviously intentionally made to look inappropriate, but isn't that what we always do here?
She seemed okay with disappearing for 30 minuts.
Also, it sounds like Phoenix Wright is going to have an additional case available later as DLC. :|
Jin
Jin
14:59
@fbueckert i've never heard of "Tales of..." series, apparently it's been around for a while.
@Jin what
@Jin Since the SNES era.
Given the complete lack of context, it almost seemed like she wanted to disappear for 30 minutes.
get Tales of Symphonia HD
And you might wanna rectify that; they're quite good.
