I don't really know why I asked. I don't know what ages mean for babies.
The first two years are pretty much measured in months.
When do they have teeth? When do they walk? When do they talk? I dunno.
The part before the baby can talk is horrifying.
@StrixVaria Some would say that the part after the baby can talk is even more terrifying.
0-5 ~= lay on their back, sleep, and cry
6-9 ~= crawling
10-12 ~= learning to walk
12-18 ~= understanding a lot of language, but not speaking much of it
0-24 ~= pooping all the time
9-24 ~= crying all the time because they're teething and it hurts
19:02
Especially since then they've learned the word, "No!", and they use it all the time.
My friend's daughter is two and a half and still can't say any words.
@Sterno Strangely enough, that works for X months before death as well.
Boundary testing! What am I allowed to say no to?
My daughter excels at shaking her head "no" to any and all questions except "Do you want another cookie?"
8
@StrixVaria Kids are all different. And hearing problems can cause huge delays.
Also, moving to another country can screw with things. I moved to America when I was two and didn't speak another word until around 4.
19:04
brb, watching all the videos I can find of little kids getting cochlear implants.
My daughter mainly knows "Mommy, Daddy, More, All Done, Outside, Kitty, and Ball"
@Sterno My nephew had an issue with his ear canals. He couldn't hear very well, so his speech wasn't very understandable.
@OrigamiRobot Oh, those videos are the most beautiful things.
The look in their eyes as soon as the implant is turned on...
When my first son learned to talk, he said "car" with about 15 different stresses and inflections - each one meant something different.
Afterwards, I will mostly be crying.
19:05
@fbueckert My daughter had a lot of fluid in her ears and really wasn't talking or hearing well until we got ear tubes in about 4 months ago.
Ooo, Men in Black is on Netflix now.
Took 'em long enough.
@Sterno I needed those when I was a kid
@Sterno Does she always say "ball" as though it were a question?
@OrigamiRobot No. Mostly "ba-all" or "baaaaall"
19:07
Huh. Every kid I've ever met has said "baw?"
@Sterno Hearing other people talk about their kids makes me want kids until I remember all the effort and time involved in raising children.
What's weird is how much they understand but how little they can say.
If I tell her it's time to change her diaper, she runs away. Usually carrying the fresh one I just laid out with her so she can hide it.
@Sterno Why is this such an awful thought to them?
Shouldn't a fresh diaper be a good feeling?
Babies are weird.
@Sterno A lot of parent teach their kids sign language for this reason. It's really cool.
19:08
@StrixVaria I often wonder this. I think they just don't like being restrained.
@StrixVaria Same reason I didn't want to take a shower, brush my teeth, or wash my hands when I was a little kid.
@OrigamiRobot They teach her a lot of signs at day care. I think she knows more than I do. :( She does the ones for "more" and "all done" all the time. What we noticed is that the things she signs are the things she also gets words for right away
She apparently knows signs for colors but I don't. I should probably not be an awful parent, and learn them
Oh God why did I open gamegen again
> An experimental game where you write poetry with drug laws but you gradually turn into a monster.
@Sterno My friend from school was telling me about how the first time his son said and signed "please" at the same time he was really confused. He just looked at his own hand in awe.
My mom told me that when she was trying to potty train me as a kid, she said something about "the toilet steals your poop" or something like that, which made me not want to give it up. I held it in for a week. Even after she gave me laxatives. I don't think I possess that kind of willpower these days.

TMI NEVER HAPPENS IN THE BRIDGE
@Sterno THAT'S MY POOP I MADE IT!
I'm like Walter White, but with poop instead of meth.
@Sterno shudder - My second son held his poop in for 2.5 years. 2.5 years of explosions after a week.
@JasonBerkan Wait, what? 2.5 years?
19:13
Are we convincing anyone to not have kids yet?
@JasonBerkan This seems impossible.
@Sterno From when he was 1.5 years until he was 4. It was ugly.
@JasonBerkan Oh, I got you. Every week he'd have to give in.
@StrixVaria No, he pooped every week (in massive ugly explosions) and then he would hold it in for another week.
I thought you were saying he literally held it for 2.5 years straight.
3
19:13
I think he means he attempted to hold it for 2.5 years.
@JasonBerkan Oh, oh, that sounds more plausible but just as horrible.
@Sterno bowels of a god.
I just wants kids for the adorable parts and to give them back for the bad parts.
@OrigamiRobot For what it's worth, there's a lot less bad parts when they're your kids instead of some other jerk's kids
19:15
@OrigamiRobot You need to skip straight to being a grandparent.
@BenBrocka Just?
@JasonBerkan I'll adopt someone who already has kids.
Instant grandpa.
Really, other than less free time and sleep, which isn't that big a deal, the two things I dislike are when she's sick and when we were doing sleep training where she had to cry it out. So, basically, when she's distressed. The rest is all pretty manageable.
I can barely take care of my cat.
FUCK I FORGOT TO FEED YOU AGAIN
I don't mind not PAYDAYing until 3 in the morning on the weekend like I would have been able to in the past. Probably because I'm too tired to give a shit.
19:17
@BenBrocka "gone home dont hav any guns itz dum fukin n00ob ga!@123!!"
@OrigamiRobot Feed your cat, zeus.
@Sterno me neither, but my dad, who sleeps in my room, does
@OrigamiRobot Your cat will just EAT YOUR FACE OFF IN YOUR SLEEP if you mess up.
I'm joking, of course
I don't get why people have feeding times for cats. Most of them self-regulate just fine, I just have a big bowl for Parker and I keep it full
@BenBrocka This makes me want to prep a database of all the games and scores, so every time any review is posted I can post that comment, listing every single game that scored above it, and then mocking the score.
19:19
@BenBrocka This is what I do. When he meows, I go fill it up again.
Except without any of the work involved.
My cat is 23lb
He does not self-regulate.
@Sterno bonus points for hilariously incompatible games
But I figured if we're going to neuter him, we at least should let him be fat.
2
The problem is he likes to stick his paws in his water, then tries to turn it over.
"You gave Super Mario Bros on NES a higher score than GTAV?! WHAT DRUGS ARE YOU ON THESE GRAPHICS AREN'T EVEN 3D"
@OrigamiRobot Parker will put his paw in any water-filled container in the house
19:21
Wow, thanks a lot kitty. How rude. I just pet my cat and she started cleaning herself right after I finished. Apparently my cat thinks I'm filthy.
if I leave my desk half the time by the time I'm back he's on the table splashing water around
@Wipqozn She sees where your hands have been.
2
@BenBrocka Carter just plays in his water bowl and then wont drink it because it's full of litter that he put in there.
Desire to watch Dot Dot Dot, A Review By Axman13 rising.
This game is so esey
19:24
What apout quests?
@Wipqozn It's funnier when a cat falls or misses a jump or something and then has to clean itself. Like it's cleaning the shame off.
The athore coments al totol lies!

Q: Distance between portals in Ingress

WillburtHow can I determine the distance between two portals in Ingress? The intel map doesn't have a scale. Figuring out a linking strategy whilst at home is difficult without a scale.

David M. Cotter0 down vote i'm finding this level absolutely impossible. i've been trying for days now to get thru it. i can't get past even the first two or three turning platforms. note i'm playing on a computer, not xbox. is it really this diffucult? it's been such a fun and relaxing game until now, now i ...

Is this another stackexchange clone? answers.unity3d.com/questions/25227/…
@MichaelDunfield Without looking at the site I'm going to say yes.
19:28
Oh. No it's not. It's on unity's home site.
@Sterno Teehee
But the community section looks suspiciously like SE
@MichaelDunfield If you say so, MikeyD.
@MichaelDunfield It's Answer Hub, an SE clone
@BenBrocka Woo, ripoffs
19:30
they even cloned Orange Slidey, have they no shame
@BenBrocka What, the thing at the top?
Yeah the notification thing that slides in at the top
Their FAQ mentions SE and the licensing changes. @MichaelDunfield
"What are the main differences with the new QATO backend?"
I can't help but wonder why people are like, "Yeah, sure, StackExchange exists, but let me make my own crappy knockoff and see if I can build a smaller, crappier userbase".
@MichaelDunfield Looks a bit like OSQA, one of the SE clones
19:33
@Sterno "They're doing well with that, I must do well with my own"
@Sterno There's a variety of reasons to do so. It gets weird when the knockoffs are distributed to other communities.
I set up an OSQA site for internal Q&A at work. For stuff basically we can't ask on SE about because it contains proprietary client info.
It didn't end up used by many people.
There are in fact multiple, competing SE clones, most of which very heavily borrowing from Stack Overflow's design with "just enough" visual changes
Also, whatever version I grabbed had some problems with markup. It would all look fine in the preview, but when actually posted links and other things just wouldn't look right.
Honestly, I guess it's not an awful plan to do something like that if you don't think you'd get past Area51 but still think your particular topic would be useful to your business needs.
19:37
Who needs Stack Overflow when you have Yahoo! Answers?
@Wipqozn sane people
@Wipqozn I should go ask that on Yahoo! Answers.
@KevinvanderVelden whoosh
@Sterno It speeds up the process, gives a lot more integration with the rest of your portfolio ... And you'd avoid the "roar Customer Support outsourced to SE!!!". I see absolutely no problem with it.
You also avoid being tied to the rest of SE with a lot of things, for that matter.
@FEichinger Yeah. Thinking about it, I can see how it could be pretty useful even for something like D&D, which is already covered by rpg.SE. Because it would be branded the "official" place for experts on D&D
And would help out their business by building the community and effectively doing some of their work for them in clarifying rules and such
19:43
Meh. I hate (or at least dislike) SO.
One of the people who left a comment agrees with him a million percent. That's a lot of percent.
@Sterno I wonder what the mapping of "SO sucks!" blogposts to SO closures/bans is
@Sterno Eh, I've been seeing behaviour that seems like this here on Arqade too.
Not much you can do about it.
Well. That was fun. Panic attack ahoy!
19:47
@MichaelDunfield There's actually a lot you can do. You can not get all huffy over a single incident and work to change things you disagree with. It can happen!
@Sterno Not if you're as inarticulate as I am.
Or if you have the stigma I have.
Or, if what you want really doesn't fit what the site allows (like homework being off-topic), you can just suck it up and look elsewhere
@MichaelDunfield hahaha, wtf is this?
what is up with his 'd's and 'b's
@Wipqozn I have no idea, somebody linked it in the indiegamestand IRC
Snow White I guess.
19:48
@MichaelDunfield Tales from the Brothers Grimm
@fbueckert ?
I didn't realize until the first time I sang it to my daughter that Rock-A-Bye-Baby is horrifying.
@GraceNote I've been getting chest pains for the last few months. They tend to trigger panic attacks.
Oh dear. That's unfortunate.
They were pretty grim back then.
19:49
@GraceNote Indeed. It's a pretty ugly cycle.
@Mana Hej.
It's been going pretty well lately. Today's...not a good day.
This is my new favourite Steam background steamcommunity.com/id/GnomeSlice
@MichaelDunfield The example question linked by this blog is not a example of "stack overflow doing it wrong."
@Wipqozn I meant the 'moderator army of retards' thing, so to speak.
19:54
@MichaelDunfield Frozen Synapse?
@3ventic Yeeeeeesss <3
@MichaelDunfield Yes, I know,a nd I'm saying this question is not a good example of that.
Jin

Jin
Jin
GTA5
i read it's multi-player
@Jin Nope. there's a group working on a huge multiplayer mod for it but it's buggy and only available on certain weekends
Oh I thought you were talking about JC2
I don't know if GTA5 is
Jin
Jin
no i'm talking about GTA5
i'm pretty sure it's multi-player from the trailers
19:58
@GraceNote Did you ever see Coraline?
@Jin It has a multiplayer mode
Coraline is a 2009 American stop-motion 3D horror/fantasy film based on Neil Gaiman's 2002 novel of the same name. It was produced by Laika and distributed by Focus Features. Written and directed by Henry Selick, it was released widely in United States theaters on February 6, 2009, after a world premiere at the Portland International Film Festival. The film was made with Gaiman's approval and cooperation. The film opened to very positive reviews from critics and made $16.85 million during opening weekend, ranking third at the box office. As of September 2009, the film had grossed over $12...
@OrigamiRobot I liked that movie.
Have not seen it.
19:59
@MichaelDunfield JC2-MP mod is coming late this year.
@3ventic Eh.
