Elona has no permadeath (unless you choose to just lie in your grave), that's probably the main bonus. There's no major time limit, starving to death is pretty easy to avoid, and such like that.

It's meaner because this leniency over normal roguelike difficulties gives it major leeway to be an absolute jerk to you every now and then. Especially in the much much later levels.
