@GraceNote I've had a StackOverflow Mortarboard since before Arqade (or Gaming StackExchange) existed!
You actually have reason to be proud of that, though.
Hmm, weird, when did I get a second Populist badge on SO? I don't remember seeing a thing about it in my feed.
September 2012, apparently.
What's weird is that question doesn't have an accepted answer.
14:04
@Powerlord It must've been unaccepted at some later point after you got the badge.
Oh, wait, I see.
The original accepted answer was Safraz's (though for a second he accepted yours before switching back). Safraz's answer was at one point a +10 or higher, specifically in time for you to take the win in September 2012. Then in June the answer was deleted, which does eventually clear the acceptance checkmark.
@OrigamiRobot WE ARE LOST WITHOUT YOUR GUIDANCE
@BenBrocka what the hell?
@5pike It's The Fighter Within, Ubisoft's brilliant motion controlled Kinect 2 fighting game that will surely be great
@BenBrocka Looks like Wii boxing.
Looks more like this:
14:10
Ugh, this
@BenBrocka In a couple years they will add some form of response to your hits, so it feels like hitting someone in real life.

Q: How do I get the "Payback" achievement?

ChrisIn Half-Life 2 Episode Two there is a "Payback" achievement. Its description reads: Kill a Hunter with its own flechettes. I have spent quite some time trying to get that achievement but I am not sure how to do it. I have tried to pick up the flechettes by hand or with the gravity gun. I ha...

Adding it to the list of questions for my rebuttal next time someone says downvotes should require a reason.
@Arperum Introducing the Kinect Power Glove with rumble. It's so bad.
@Sterno Downvotes should require a reason.
Upvotes should too.

Q: How do I obtain the Fishcake?

ScootalooI've seen a few players who had the fishcake, and though I'm aware it is just a reskin of another food item I still would like to have it. So, is my only option to trade for it or what are my options? I'm not sure if it is buyable in the store, I'll check later.

BAM
Morning, Bridge
Also, everytime you favourite a question you should leave a comment.
(it's a small list)
Also if you edit a question leave a comment too.
Also if you choose NOT to vote on a question leave a comment.
Also leave a comment if you look at a question
14:12
@Sterno One of the few areas we (sorta) agree on.
Do you have to leave a comment if you leave a comment, explaining why you left the comment?
Or even think about it
Every time you have inappropriate thoughts while looking at a user's gravatar leave a comment
@Sterno Obviously you do. Don't ask dumb questions.
If you're scrolling through the list of questions and glance at a title, leave a comment explaining why
14:12
> I'm not a political person, by choice
-- The person who runs Groklaw
> There are Sims making out in a rocket ship.
@Powerlord Are they using Grok as in to know?
Exciting liveblog of EA's conference
Because that would be awesome
@SaintWacko If you've never read Groklaw, the person who owns it saying they're not a political person when they were involved in writing the GPLv3 is what we call a "bald-faced lie"
14:14
@fbueckert "Too bad SE doesn't have a blocking feature." That, coming from a person who pissed off almost the entire Bridge at one point ... Geez.
@BenBrocka I think it would feel much more satisfying to hit some annoying brat in the face physically then through a screen. It would kind of work for friends i guess.
@fbueckert To be fair, you did offer him advice on how to improve his question. You monster.
@BenBrocka The Power Glove is exactly what the Kinect needs
@FEichinger He's just pissed that he edited his question, and I still wasn't happy with it. That's fine, it's his prerogative.
@Wipqozn I know! I should've just downvoted and moved on!
The ability to use hand gestures while still being able to press buttons
14:15
In fact, that's exactly what I said I'd do, last week.
His edit didn't really address your concerns at all. He just missed your point completely.
Turns out, helping users is ingrained in me.
@fbueckert I'm just saying, he out of all people ...
He's added more detail now though.
In theory you can use the kinect for broad motion gestures while holding an actual controller for actual controls
14:16
@Wipqozn Added more detail, and sorta proved my point at the same time.
But more likely it'll just be used for Kinect Sports 2 and...lots of really bad games

A: What are the strange planks for?

SpitfireWarning: this answer spoils the game ending.

"See title" really was a hallmark of a bad question. He hadn't done any research beforehand.
Steel Battalion 4 Break your fucking TV edition with Kinect
@BenBrocka And TV.
14:17
I wish we could close answers as duplicates
@BenBrocka Stop making me sad!
They should totally have a Kinect TV
@BenBrocka That automatically cracks the screen if you pull off an undocumented, yet easily mistaken, move.
I hate when I have two Chrome windows open (my main window with all my tabs and a second one I was watching a video on) and accidentally close the main window first. All it remembers is the other one, and I lose all my tabs -.-
I use the Session Buddy extension and just use it to restore my multi-window set of tabs for that very reason, heh.
14:20
Some Kinect game should add a really low chance on large movements to suddenly layer an image of a broken screen over your game. Or fake dead pixels.
@SaintWacko ctrl shift T reopens the last tab, if you do that before closing the second window, you'll get the previous window back
And then send the reaction of people to those things to youtube or something.
@Arperum In other news, the incidences of shock induced heart attacks has risen 100%
@BenBrocka ...I can't find the shit key
It's a pretty crappy key
14:22
@SaintWacko Good news! The new Kinect can monitor your heartbeat and call the paramedics for you.
@BenBrocka And yeah, I know about that key combo, but I never think about it until I've already restarted my computer
@TimStone It also knows exactly where you are, so it can direct the paramedics directly to your door.
@TimStone Will it wait for a voice command to do so?
@TimStone Problem solved! Plus free entertainment for the masses.
@TimStone It also uses this to know when you're having sex, and displays this on the screen:
14:24
@SaintWacko Priceless.
@SaintWacko yeah I've done that too. I'm especially at risk since Chrome seems to have stopped automatically shutting down with windows so I have to manally close it
@SaintWacko And another session of heart attacks launched.
@BenBrocka For me, when windows update restarts my computer, it just starts killing off tabs. So the first indication I usually have that it's restarting is I get the "He's dead, Jim!" message
Huh, never had it do that
@BenBrocka do you run it in multi-process mode?
14:26
I run it in whatever the default is

Carp Fishing

Proposed Q&A site for recreational anglers who specifically target carp

Currently in definition.

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment o.ô
Silly turtle, doing legwork for other users.
NO BASS FISHERS ALLOWED
14:29
@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment wat
@fbueckert Meh, sounds like he's not in a position to check the store right now.
And if you catch a salmon I swear I will fucking cut you
That is to say he's not aware there is an online store.
@FEichinger Fishing for carp is clearly completely different then any and all other fishing things.
@Wipqozn Which just means he shouldn't have asked the question in the first place. Research. Effort.
14:30
Although I agree with @FEichinger he should have just waited until he could have checked the store.
@OrigamiRobot Time for to be the star of the site.
@GraceNote I was born for this moment.
@fbueckert The asker?
@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment How do I avoid getting my head bitten off? We need fish for the colony, but those fish are dangerous!
@GraceNote Amount of mistyped "crap activities"? NOT ENOUGH.
14:30
@SaintWacko Would not surprise me in the least.
@OrigamiRobot That's a pretty carpy thing to be born for.
Man this site's a load of carp
If you want fish/poop jokes, just talk about crappies.
@OrigamiRobot Time to hit the shit key
Unless you pronounce that crah-pee like some kind of monster.
14:33
There's a line somewhere between constructive feedback and hostility when commenting on questions, and I feel like we keep going over the line lately.

@BenBrocka Don't you dare steal my soul again!
14:35
@Sterno The first hostile comment I see comes from the asker himself.
@BenBrocka They already announced Peggle2, that's not even news!
@TimStone You're not even news
@BenBrocka The unicorn looks kinda really dumb though.
@BenBrocka Your face isn't even news.
@FEichinger Your mom was news
@BenBrocka Your mom is news.
@Arperum Should make it more MLP like - sales would skyrocket.
Understand that when you leave feedback for someone with a downvote, they're already in a state of mind where they're defensive and feel like you're calling them stupid. Continuing to argue with them doesn't help. And even if they make a first hostile comment, it's not an excuse to keep it going.
@Arperum The animals always looked kinda dumb
When's the Sony thing at gamescom?
@Sterno So we should just not say anything, because anything we do say will make them cry?
14:38
I mean, the goal is to let them know what you didn't like so they can improve their question, right? Once that goal is accomplished, further discussion is just fanning the flames.
I'm sorry, but that is worthy of the Shit key.
@BenBrocka I know, I played the original too much to be healthy, but this ones head looks even worse.
@BenBrocka :O!
@Sterno Yeah, I agree. There's no point arguing with them.
I think the alternative is to ask for elaboration on the post without summarily saying "Your question is bad" with attached emphasis.
14:39
@GraceNote emphasis mine
@OrigamiRobot I was just about to ping you with that.
When they say they "fixed" the post and it isn't fixed, we have to tell them yet again that it isn't fixed, simple as that.
You don't have to tell them anything, ever.
And if we don't elaborate on how to fix it - and why it needs to be fixed - we're not helping at all.
@Arperum I don't think it looks that bad aside from the "drill" horn thing. The new PVZ's artstyle I don't like as much though
at least the plants, I think they look worse
14:40
When you do tell them things, it would be best to do it in as friendly and constructive a manner as possible. If the user doesn't seem receptive to hearing it, it seems best to just let it go.
@FEichinger Yes, but if they're just being hostile and unwilling to listen then why bother helping them?
Just let it go and move on.
Or edit it yourself, like @Wipqozn did.
You can't teach those who don't want to be taught.
@OrigamiRobot amen
Carp fishing, eh? Well, it's a relaxing hobby, really. You just have to watch out for the sharks.
14:41
@BenBrocka The drill horn and its mouth.
@MartinSojka Not a carp. This joke is a failure.
@OrigamiRobot There's a carp in the bowl.
@MartinSojka No, that's a beta
@MartinSojka Definitely not a carp.
14:43
You had potential. Goldfish are carp, but that's not a goldfish.
Carp are various species of oily freshwater fish of the family Cyprinidae, a very large group of fish native to Europe and Asia. The cypriniformes (family Cyprinidae) are traditionally grouped with the Characiformes, Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes to create the superorder Ostariophysi, since these groups have certain common features, such as being found predominantly in fresh water and that they possess Weberian ossicles (an anatomical structure originally made up of small pieces of bone formed from four or five of the first vertebrae); the most anterior bony pair is in contact with the...
Hmm. Looks like one to me, but then I just blame it on this crappy monitor. ;)
@Arperum But he's looking wistfully into the distance! You gotta love that
@skovacs1 Huh, I didn't know koi were carp as well.
14:45
@BenBrocka But his mouth/nose part thing is al wrong.
@Sterno At the same time, defending a general practice that in some cases might be acceptable does nothing but validate the asker's laziness.
@Arperum The nose is pretty standard cartoon-horsey
does look a bit family-guy-esque though
@BenBrocka I still find it wrong.
Which is the only part I'm responding to. The question, as it stood, was utterly lazy. The fact that sometimes, questions don't need the context does not apply in this case.
@fbueckert I disagree.
14:47
@fbueckert I don't think the question was worth a downvote. NOTE: I do think that you and others have the right to think that, and cast downvotes as such. But I didn't.
But I already know what you think about my opinion.
So I didn't defend the general case. I defended that case.
The context seemed unnecessary in the primary use case... someone else wants to know how to get it and googles it
@Sterno So you defended a two sentence question that showed no effort at all. Gotcha.
People looking for an answer to that question already have the context.
Oh man - Support ticket with a word file attached which only contains a screenshot.
14:48
@OrigamiRobot ...koi are named after the Japanese word for "carp".
@GraceNote I don't speak Japanese.
@fbueckert Yeah. Because a lot of times, context is useless fluff. At it's worst, it actively makes the question harder to understand.
Take, for instance
@5pike Awesome! Now fix it! Whatever it is.

Q: How is score calculated?

SternoOkay, so I've managed to beat the game on Normal. It seems like the thing to do now is work on getting a higher score. However, scoring is a complete mystery to me. What sort of things should I do (or not do) to improve my score? Hard numbers, if possible, would be a huge benefit.

I don't either, it's just I figured if people knew the word koi at all it kinda lent itself to it.
14:50
I'm not sure that question needs anything more than a title, honestly.
@Arperum No, I refuse to. Someone else should take this ticket.
(and a tag)
I agree with @Sterno that in this specific case no more context was required, however I also agree with the downvotes since he didn't do any research before asking. He didn't even check the store. As @FEichinger said, he could have just waited until he got home. IF he did a quick search he probably would have found the online store too, just like I did.
With that said, I personally didn't downvote his question, but I think the downvotes it got were deserved.
I just think that there was lots of room for improvement in that question, and the subsequent edits only proved my point. A little bit more effort on the askers part wouldn't have killed him.
Kinda like how I would assume anyone who knows about the usage of "baguette" in English to refer to what we call French Bread is derived from the French word for Bread.
14:50
I agree with @TimStone
I'm not sure what's going on, so I'll just nod sagely.
@Wipqozn The context he did add only showed how little effort he originally put into it in the first place.
@Arperum Battle Towers are annoying
@GraceNote I don't really look into why animals or foods are named what they are.
My friend and I fought our way up one, went to open a chest still in the tower, and a golem exploded through the ceiling. We finally defeated it, and the tower starts exploding around us. Killed us both, and the explosions destroyed all of our loot and gear
It was stupid
14:52
@TimStone @OrigamiRobot In that case I also agree with him
That context is critical for proper judging of question merits.
@SaintWacko Yup, one every couple thousand blocks or so is more then enough.

Q: Help with Animal Crossing save transfer

DanielI am currently borrowing New Leaf from my step sister and I have now bought a copy of AC New leaf for myself.. I am NOT the mayor on her game card, when I transfer my save data from her town to my new town, would i automatically become mayor? Or will I need to start a whole new game in order to b...

I don't think it's wrong to ask for more context. I do think it's wrong to do so in what appears to be throwing up one's arms in exasperation. Even if you are in fact exasperated, drilling that into people doesn't really make for a peaceful atmosphere.
2
@fbueckert Providing some information on prior research is always a good thing, same with context. However as @Sterno said anyone looking at that question is already going to know what the fishcake is.
14:53
The explosions were not in the original mod, and that stupid golem didn't activate until you stepped out onto the roof back then.
well, not anyone, but anyone qualified to answer the question.
You don't need to be able to vote on every question on the site.
@GraceNote "See title" in the body is one of my pet peeves. Yeah, I shouldn't have taken it out on the user.
@fbueckert I'm very well aware of this.
@fbueckert Then edit it out.
14:55
The original creator had only three kinds of towers too, and not 1 billion different kinds like now. And way less then now too. I really think there are WAY too much towers by default
@JasonBerkan I'm also very much in the "Teach a man to fish" camp.
@fbueckert Lead by example.
@Wipqozn I disagree. I think context is important.
@OrigamiRobot I am. That's why I'm commenting.
@Wipqozn You assume people only look at a question because they have some involvement - a) knowing the answer or b) having the same question. That's wrong.
@fbueckert Question askers are informed when their question is edited by someone else.
14:56
You weren't overly hostile but at the same time, it doesn't take someone going "YARR I'M GONNA EAT YOUR BONES AND THEN KICK YOU OFF A CLIFF FOR YOUR TRANSGRESSIONS" to turn a situation sour, and quite frankly a non-peaceful atmosphere benefits no one.
I look at pretty much every question for a game I own, and I would very much have been able to answer that particular question - had I known some more context directly from the question, for instance.
@fbueckert Don't give an example, be the example.
@JasonBerkan @OrigamiRobot That doesn't teach them how to do it themselves.
@FEichinger I was able to answer it without any information. I just googled.
and I never said context was abad thing, just that it wasn't required in this case.
The question was fine without it.
I am very firmly in teaching them what needs to be done, not doing it for them.
14:57
@fbueckert It absolutely can.
@fbueckert Honest question: How's that been working out here?
@Sterno Depends on the user, as always.
@fbueckert Sure, and if he makes the same mistake again then don't edit it.
@fbueckert To be blunt, sometimes you harangue, you do not teach.
@Sterno He made an effort to fix it. It didn't work, but it got him to make the effort. That's a lot more than you'll get out of someone if you just fix their question for them.
14:58
@Wipqozn If I edit, I still have to comment to educate the user on why I did what I did.
If I see a user consistently making the same problem, despite being told otherwise, I'm not going to bother repeating myself. I'll just downvote and move on.
I mean, if I see a post with terrible spelling, I don't leave a comment that says "learn to spell, please. Or use a spellchecker." I just fix the damn thing.
3
Or you could edit it yourself and then leave a nice comment to explain why you made the edits instead of telling the user what they need to do.
If I just explain what needs fixing, I still have to comment.
Either way, I have to comment, and I'd rather reinforce it by making them do it on their own.
Also, for the record I don't think there's anything wrong with just telling them how to fix it. I'll do that at times.
