There's hardware performance, but there's also a slew of Linux-specific performance issues related to driver configurations, desktop settings, and so on.

@fbueckert Color reproduction is the main difference. It's higher quality in IPS monitors. The viewing angle is also much better. I'm into photography and art and stuff in general, so proper color reproduction is important to me.

LG makes some very affordable IPS monitors. I used this one for 2 years. Has a decent form factor too if you're into that.

This is my new one, but that's the German LG site. I don't think this one's available in the US yet. No fancy form factor (more of a plain, business-style frame and such), but it's 16:10 and was also a decent price.

What I found annoying is that most monitors went to Full HD resolution instead of 1920x1200. Though now I have a 27" 2560x1440, and at that resolution 16:9 is quite okay.

If anything, games should support multi-monitors for extraneous information, so you don't have massive HUD clutter.

Point is simply that the whole removing-TL-because-misused is ridiculous when we now just use OT for what we used to close as TL - just because there's no other option anymore, even when it isn't OT.

@badp It's due to the nature of the thing - it depends on the distro, the desktop environment, the various drivers, the kernel version - there's a lot of factors that I doubt we'll ever see replicated. And, again, there seems to be no pattern by which to determine whether or not a game runs reasonably. All we can do is offer some general tweaks to make the whole system faster, which, in my opinion, has nothing to do with gaming anymore either.

Hi guys. I love TBS games and plan to get Civ 5 next week. I have never played any of the Civ games before. What would be the best way to learn it? (Is there a really good website out there that guides you through the basics? Or is the best option just to play the tutorial, read all the game hints and figure it out?)
