I had played Magic back in the early days (and have quite a bit of cards that I should find a way to sell without getting too much scammed, including some not-really-rare-but-nice-trivia things like the original version of Blessing before they utterly nerfed it.)
I could argue for a day about WHY the whole thing is an atrocious gambling based scam, but what triggers me the most is that this is not just physical gacha, it is also crafted so that you rare cards are BOUND to lose value and get damaged.
Sometime, you could buy a booster pack and get cards that can't even be considered "mint" condition because they were already ruined before you opened the packaging.
If these scammers can turn paper to gold and sell you 8 rectangles of paper for the likes of 8$ (one dollar/piece of paper) - and that is for currently running sets, don't get me started on out-of-print ones....
.... There is no reason TCG cards aren't laminated. Out of saving money for the poor billionaire companies, that is.
Mostly anime based, these aren't made for playing, they are just collectible arts (like stickers albums), often they have some character data on the back.
and that is without getting into things like Box mapping, shops selling opened packs, WotC being an utterly horrible company, being able to rig rarity and retroactively drop the price of a card you already got, selling cards but then forbidding you from using them in official play etc etc etc....
