Quick question: Using this as an example, would it be worthwhile making a meta post about the value/benefit of making a completely separate v. heavily editing an original post to meet the guidelines/site requirements?

1 hour later…
3:07 AM
@Ben I think having the community discuss it to reach a consensus is always a great idea, but me personally, if the post requires heavy editing to meet guidelines, it's not likely to be salvageable by the community (with rare exceptions). Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question though?

Ben
I don't think so. The question is (if there isn't already) should we post on met about it

@Ben I would if it didn't exist already, but that's just me lol

4:07 AM
@Ben If it's an answer, just make a new one

Q: How do I Poison Someone?

GnomeSliceThis is difficult to ask. Ok, so this guy is really getting on my nerves. He's stubborn, obnoxious, idiotic, and completely driving me up the wall. It's time for him to go. However, there is a bit more to it than that. I could simply organize the other people involved to banish him from ...

RIP murder
it eventually got cleared from the site as a noise tag. which is fair

Q: Meteor in minecraft no mods?

Aaron HendersonSo, a pretty long time ago I and my friend were building a giant basketball court, and out of nowhere a big explosion happened and there was then a big crater in the ground. We had absolutely no mods at all and no one could have done it because we were not playing online (we were playing split-sc...

Saw some posts about popular/most down voted questions, and it reminded me of the time me and @Ave posted an answer at ALMOST the same exact time - if you hover of the date of the answers it will actually report the same exact time, but I think we determined that my answer was just smidge sooner using Data Explorer:
https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/318491/what-additional-features-do-you-get-after-spending-five-dollars-on-steam
The community then took it upon themselves to try and make sure both answers maintained the same votes. It's mine and Ave's most voted answer.
Or maybe it wasn't data explorer - somehow we knew that mine was posted first. I think the tooltip might of had more time data originally, but looks like it stops at the seconds mark now, and data explorer doesn't seem to go further than that too data.stackexchange.com/gaming/revision/1444322/1773440/…

Q: Tag Warnings: Looking for suggestions of tags that often got low quality questions and would benefit a warning when trying to add that tag

Fredy31Per this meta question: Give moderators the power to add tag warnings and this one too: What's the protocol for requesting a tag warning? There is an option, that needs to be added by Stackexchange admins, to add warnings on the usage of tags. So what are tags you often see bad/low quality questi...

So Titanfall 2 has been experiencing some pretty heavy DDOSing issues over the past year or so, to the point where the multiplayer is considered unplayable. Several weeks back, someone posted a fix for the DDOSing issues. Turns out, this person was involved with causing the DDOSing issues in the first place.

@Yuuki wow lol. And someone, I think @GnomeSlice, was telling me yesterday that TF2 servers were perfectly fine

yeah, they're fine now because the dude posted a fix for a problem they caused
apparently, this was an attempt to get hired by Respawn

@Yuuki I had just a moment where I was wondering what Respawn had to do with Team Fortress 2

@SaintWacko But I purposely never said "TF2"
ah, that was @Fredy31
oh and the cherry to top off the sundae, this guy has/had a swastika icon on discord
because of course everyone has to be a neo nazi these days

4:08 PM
Oh, yeah, I guess I started reading on their comment lol

video games were a mistake

@Yuuki ?

I really wonder how you can have a swastika anywhere near your name and think 'this will not impeed me in any way ever.

Also 'I'm the source of your troubles for the last year' is not a good pitch if you want to be hired by someone

@Fredy31 neither is "i'm literally a scooby doo villain"
4

Like show the loop hole hackers can use to demolish the servers, show how it can be used, and then apply for their cybersecurity or server defense team. BUT DONT DO IT FOR A YEAR STRAIGHT BEFORE SHOWING YOUR HAND
But yeah Respawn's server defense team or whatever is called seem to be... well not the best in the bizz
and that sucks because Titanfall and Apex are fucking great
But if he's casually using nazi iconography, he's, like we say in quebec, not the most thawed pogo in the box
and yes, its a real expression to say 'no the brightest of people'
and for those who a completely confused... a pogo is a brand of frozen corndogs walmart.ca/en/ip/pogo-original-10s/6000001851760

4:26 PM
haha

well, so much for making elote for lunch

just a minor politician that dropped that in a press conference in 2017, and since it became basically a running gag in quebec
just because its so freaking out there

@Fredy31 i actually learned that just this week

about pogos?

yeah

4:36 PM
lol
probably just has a different name in EU and the US

greetings fellow humans

but that was one of the things that if you had that for lunch in high school, you were THE shit

@Fredy31 they're corndogs in the US

even if microwaved they are garbage
but fried or oven baked, oh they are good

If I name myself "an idiot" in a game when I kill someone they were killed by an idiot

4:38 PM
Yeah its a frigidaire thing here, where the name of the brand overshadowed the name of the actual thing

@CiurkitboyN but if they kill you, then they killed an idiot

like how frigidaire is the brand, refrigerator is the thing
but everybody calls it a fridge

@Fredy31 for that one, i'm not sure if it comes from the brand or refrigerator

@Yuuki exactly if they kill me not much of an acheivment but if I kill them...
@Yuuki but isn't it spelled refrigderator?

that still might be a quebec thing; maybe the right example might be that the dark fizzy drink is reffered mostly as a 'coke' when thats the brand. By got no idea what the actual name of that product is
In quebec a fridge is often referred as the 'frigidaire' which is straight the brand
my examples might get lost in translation

4:41 PM
@Fredy31 There's distribution maps on what people call soda. It's kinda interesting.

@Fredy31 what do you only have one brand?

mmm that map's a bit of a mess

never had anyone I ever knew call it it anything but "soda"
or me
I call it soda too

@CiurkitboyN Nah we got coke and pepsi like everyone else, but the discussion will often go 'what you drinkin; coke; is pepsi ok'

@Fredy31 I meant fridges

4:43 PM
@CiurkitboyN so assuming you live in the US (entirely probable that you don't), you live on the east or west coast?

@Yuuki mars
I live on mars

nah we got all brands too, but it is often referred as a frigidaire even if its not of the frigidaire brand

@CiurkitboyN the west coast, got it

it just sounds better than 'Réfrigérateur'

Aggressively sweats

4:47 PM
im just looking for other examples of 'things were it is famillarly called the brand name instead of the actual name' but that stuff is usually regional

band-aids

^ there you go

Hi

or using advils/tylenols

velcro

4:48 PM
im not sure

cellophane, breathalyzer, frisbee
xerox
zamboni

okay think we got enough examples

I had some but the ping noise distracted me

no, we need exactly one more: plexiglass

or, but only in quebec, a kodak

4:49 PM
The sun

to refer to a photo camera
even if the brand is dead lol

jello

@Fredy31 god, kodak fumbled so bad. them and sears had all the groundwork to make it big. well, bigger than they already were

Kleenex

like sears literally could've been amazon

4:51 PM
and Blockbuster could have been Netflix

@Yuuki i will always find it funny how they had the tech for digital cameras in 75, decided to not do crap with it because their business was built on selling you film, and then got destroyed when their competitors figured it out in the late 90s

@Batophobia that, not so much, imo. blockbuster did physical rentals. building a streaming platform is something different.

and when they finally switched they looked like they were the ones behind and not the innovators

Netflix started out with mailing physical DVDs

4:53 PM
like @Fredy31 said, kodak literally invented digital cameras years ahead of the curve and sears was already doing physical deliveries
heck, sears was shipping houses

@Yuuki Blockbuster had an occasion to buy netflix for i think 1 mil 10 years ago. They denied

@Fredy31 lol rip

yeah other 'missing the boat until its too late'
Sears did the internet shipping thing before the internet was even a thing

I mean, they could've even shot for the Redbox slot

and they fucked it up hard when the internet became a thing

4:54 PM
@Fredy31 at the time that netflix was offered to blockbuster, i don't think netflix was doing streaming at the time, they were still a physical DVD rental delivery service

Also, speaking of the internet, yesterday was the 30th anniversary of the first webpage

what was it?

don't say that

only 30?

that makes me older than the internet D:

4:55 PM
@Yuuki Yeah we laugh with the hindsight, back then they were far from being big

yeah, i think the blockbuster goof with netflix is still a big screwup but not on the level of sears or kodak

like in the Queen movie where they say YOU ARE THE ONE THAT WILL BE KNOWN FOR REFUSING QUEEN. The guy is like 'yeah sure' because he has about 20 up-and-coming artists a week that give him the same line

sears and kodak were already good at the thing that supplanted them but decided not to do anything with it whereas streaming wasn't a thing yet

@Yuuki it might have been in the cards back then, but still, being a streaming video service back then? it was a day dream, shit that was 'yeah sure thats gonna work lol'
and it did
survivor bias: we see all the ones who bet it all and it worked. But we often forget the 20-30 that did the same bet and failed, because they were too early, or just could not get the funding to make that dream a reality
Like for every Stardew Valley, there is probably 40 indie games that just didn't get any traction. For every Minecraft, there is 30 voxel based games that their creator will barely even make a living off the sales of that game.
Like CubeWorld, that I bought in beta. It released 8 yrs later, and has like... 9000 reviews on steam. store.steampowered.com/app/1128000/Cube_World

5:18 PM
@Yuuki Blockbuster just stayed the course until it was too late to save anything. A little bit like Gamestop rn. Even if you could say that GS is at least trying shit

@Fredy31 The problem is that the up and coming technology directly competes with their core business of selling existing technology

Its just that the basis for GS business model, the brick and mortar store, is doomed to fail, and in gaming, well, you are part of the first industries that went full digital product sales

It could even be argued that this is the rational thing to do, given the risks of selling a new technology which itself might fail

Like I still love having the physical game on my shelves, but I know that I'm not in the majority
@PrivatePansy A bird in the hand is better than 2 in the bush like the idiom says. Another way to run a company in the ground is to throw yourself on every new and upcoming tech

I still prefer physical copies. If nothing else, just so I don't have to deal with managing disk space

5:22 PM
@Batophobia and when I suddenly wanna play like mass effect, i pop the cd in and play. I don't have to wait 3 hours for the download
But I guess that will be a lot less of a problem when gigabit gets to NA

Yea, if game streaming ever becomes reliable that will likely take over

to a decent price. hell I already pay 60 for 60 down 10 up, and it would cost me i think 200 for gigabit
@Batophobia yeah, stadia still running around but I still think they might have been a bit too early
sucks that it will probably end up in google's graveyard

Maybe it'll just hibernate until the tech catches up
or Steam will just dominate it
kinda unfortunate how the pioneers are rarely the major success stories

Yeah when a new tech comes around, the first one to jump in often just runs with the whole bag for years. But jump in too early, or too late, and you will have 10% the success
every tech seems to have just the right point where boom it clicks
Like Twitch for streaming, Netflix for streaming series, Amazon to buy shit online

I still miss GameFly

5:29 PM
whats gamefly

Like before Twitch there was Ustream, but it was too early and did not succeed. Justin.tv arrives and boom, just the right moment, becomes a success
netflix for games

hmmm

Old netflix, where they send you the physical copy

they shipped you games by mail, you keep them as long you want, ship them back when you are done

why would you rent a game?

5:29 PM
to play it?

When was the last time you came back to an old, single player game?
So you rent it, play the story, send it back

and if you wanted to, you could always rent it again

cheaper than buying the 60$ copy

I don't play many single-player games lol

well could be also to try a game before dropping a 60 on it
needless to say a lot of the industry didnt like that and must be happy with the all digital market we got now
you can't give the game to someone else to try, they need to drop the cash for the game to have it

5:33 PM
Kinda depends on the games too. Like if you played CoD multiplayer for a couple months before moving on to the next game, you'd still end up saving money
Yea, and you can sell used copies of digital games

it was so freaking disruptive that xbox wanted to put shit in place so you could not pass around disk copies of games and it being blocked by the console itself. But outrage made them back down
or maybe just the fact that sony did one hell of a victory lap on them for that one
like it was freaking funny how sony just saw their opportunity and DUNKED on microsoft for that decision

That was hilarious
Their E3 presentation that year was like constant applause

even if sony, with their diskless console now is doing the exact same thing, just not saying it outright
with the current generation of XB and PS its basically 'want to be able to trade your games or dive in the preplayed bin at gamestop? pay 60$ more'

@PrivatePansy that would be the case for kodak, but not so much for sears

@Yuuki yeah, Kodak that new tech would cripple them because they made most their money off the films.

Sears, well, just had to put their catalog online, and make you able to buy from the website. Every thing else they already had the infrastructure for
Because i'm pretty sure sears didn't make their money off customers actually picking up the phone and calling them
but yeah I really wonder how long we will still have malls, and if they close, what will be made of those buildings?

5:46 PM
Amazon warehouses

that or cities might buy them to do like a municipal center or something. Like with sport fields, libraries, etc

Or just the clothing stores will survive. People seem to be keen on trying on stuff
I still think some paintball company should setup shop in an abandoned mall.

@Batophobia well my SO still needs to try stuff. For me a medium is a medium but her, she's plus sized. And it seems that Large, XL, XXL is not the same, even for the same pair of pants from the same company

Yea, women's sizes are weird and seemingly inconsistent.

@Batophobia that is very possible. That or other 'in person experiences' like escape rooms and shit

5:51 PM
It's also possible that the decline of stores will lead to new in-person activities
I mean, I'd probably check out a place devoted to playing couch coop games

yeah i personally think we are on the edge of a revolution of all those spaces. Malls will have to change like we said, but office spaces too. I imagine a lot of companies, after covid, will scale down their office space and have most people work from home
@Batophobia there are 2-3 bars with tvs and consoles for couch coop in Montreal. Never seem to fly high budget wise
Think one of them shut down due to covid
they had some hightech sims for racing games and that was fucking cool tho

yea, lockdowns would do that

but when I went there was a guy of the company that builds them there and I casually asked him how much a setup costs... if I remember right it was something like 20k

that's exactly the kind of thing that could draw in customers though
throw in some good marketing like competitions and stuff, it could work
Heck, I'd go just for a Guitar Hero competition

I was there for the official NHL tournament (the video game) of the Montreal Canadiens
help the organisators in their Dreamhack tournament, went to encourage them
And yes, going to a gaming bar for an NHL tournament is VERY CANADIAN
canada intensifies

6:00 PM
I can't judge. The only "Olympics" I've watched this season is the marble league

lol. Idk the marble league is funny, but like for 5 minutes. But it will never be not satisfying for me to watch his old videos where he built huge tracks that there were like a thousand marbles at once in

oh absolutely. the sound alone on those drives me crazy

Orangers have been a huge disappointment this year

Like I'm not much into asmr, but that fucking hits

6:47 PM
god idk why but today, I am so fucking done with my day of work
only 2 hours to go

Well, it's Friday

dly
7:19 PM
Thank god it is. Damn Covid still gives me a headache at work.

what do you do for work?

dly
Police :D

yeah I'm gonna guess having to deal with the anti everything crowd of covid for the 26th time this week might weigh a lot at some point
just seeing those in quebec that raid store with 25 people with no masks, and then do their victory lap that they made the man bend the knee
only to get a ticket by the cops at the exit
I'm not a violent person, but i think if I was in the store when they did that shit I would have to keep myself from throwing hands

dly
7:35 PM
Yep, we have those anti covid protests pretty much every day, but that's usually not my problem. I'm part of cyber crime and IT investigation, but we're often low on staff, so everyone has to go there from time to time.

just to have them scream at you that this is now a dictatorship/police state...
where you can openly defy the government without expecting to suddenly dissapear

dly
Or being filmed for Youtube for being overly violent when just shoving them away
Oh, and getting shouted at for being racist is a classic.

@dly Aren't most of the "covid is a hoax" protesters white Republicans?

dly
I live in Germany, so we have a couple more parties :P

7:50 PM
@Nzall Here in canada too, its not a 2 party thing, us vs them
but I would be willing to bet most of them vote very conservative, for those small parties that never get a seat, or dont vote at all
In quebec one of them became a party leader, of a party that pools at 6% and never elected a deputy
but hes talking like 'WHEN WE WILL WIN THE ELECTION!' Next elections in Quebec are Fall of 2022. Calm down bucko
And thats not getting in the subject that it would be a historic win to go from no deputies elected for about 20 years of that party to suddenly be the ones in charge
Especially since we seen with Maxime Bernier in the federal (Canada wide) election that running the Republican/GOP playbook here in canada doesn't work
He elected 0 deputies, was lucky to be 3rd in most circonscriptions
But yeah, I'll stop here, pretty sure most of you do not give a crap about the politics of poutineland

@Fredy31 Yeah, I definitely understand that. I'm in Belgium, and while we do have some people who are opposed to the measures, they are few and far between. The biggest recent event was actually a manhunt on a soldier known for extremism who threatened some federal functionaries and went missing after stealing a p90, a pistol, 2000 rounds of ammo and 4 anti-tank rocket launchers from an armory. a local mayor found his decaying corpse in a ditch after smelling the rot. autopsy ruled suicide

Here in Quebec they look at the french doing demonstrations in the streets anti-covid-mesures and scream LOOK, THE FRENCH ARE TAKING THE STREETS AGAINST COVID MESURES
Bitch it was 2000 people, and the french take the streets for pretty much anything

@Fredy31 I consider any non-union protest involving less than .5% of the population to be for a fringe cause

Pretty sure there was a bigger demonstration the next week about how much butter is in baguettes

or something like that, the real number is a bit vague

8:01 PM
@Nzall yeah here the movement leaders are basically all ex members of 'La meute' or 'StormAlliance' which are basically our mild alt-right
the 'immigrants are all here just to kill us' crowd, you know the ones

8:28 PM
Oh, you're in Quebec
Lol. How's covid going 😂
I'm in Ottawa
French Canadians are nuts when it comes to stuff like this

Well I'd say the covid morons in english canada are even fucking weirder
with their woman that would have been suddenly appointed Queen of Canada by Trump/FBI/the US Army or whatever
And I'm not even kidding; I wish I was. independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/…
But the basis are the same. Take whatever Q diarhea was produced, change a few words so it applies to canada, and post it everywhere. Seems like the CDC DID NOT APPROVE THE VACCINE IN CANADA!... The CDC doesn't have jurisdiction in canada you dummies

Man, splashing wind strike is such a slaw way to train

anyways, we should try to not just pollute this gaming chat with politics

Ha i was just about to say something similar

I asked the question my SO was longing to hear for a long time this week. The question every girl wants their boyfriend to ask. Do you want to play Coop Stardew Valley

8:42 PM
@SaintWacko ?
whta does that mean?

@Fredy31 hey bby wnt 2 strdew vally
2

@PrivatePansy That is what seeming counts as dirty talk in my home

@PrivatePansy I put on my robe and wizard hat

9:10 PM
jammin to this

Anyone else attending the rift tour event in Fortnite tonight?

nope

9:27 PM
@CiurkitboyN Well, "slaw" was supposed to be "slow"
I'm playing Oldschool Runescape

Aren't most trainings slow in OSRS

Yeah, but this is slow
Like <4k xp per hour slow
It's cheap, though

that is indeed pretty slow

And completely afk

9:30 PM
doesn't it require runes?

Yeah

so is it limited by inventory space, or how is it afk?

I mean, technically
But you can have a bit over 2 billion runes in one slot, so...

oh dang. I thought it capped at like 99

Ah, no, that would be severely limiting

10:00 PM
I've also been playing some OSRS recently. I always like to do quests as early as possible to skip some early levels.

Q: Should we begin consolidating/removing unused/minimally used tags?

Taco タコスWith the rise of this question related to tag warnings, I became curious and started looking through the tags available on Arqade. To my surprise, we have approximately 6,400 tags (approximated from a 4x9 grid of tags across 178 pages), and my educated guess would be that we only use a handful of...

11:00 PM
The aforementioned question may be ignored; Wondercricket linked a very, very similar question: gaming.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/15865/…
I concur with Penguin's answer there, so I deleted mine.
Rift Tour was short, but enjoyable lol
Started with a few mini games which were pretty fun, then about 5 partial songs before you end up flying through rings for experience points for about 3-5 minutes. Overall, not disappointed, didn't really expect more than that lol
Someone already posted footage lol
Like I said, short lol

11:38 PM
@Tacoタコス Nope. Nice one. Thanks.
The 'dark version' is dope af too. Wavey stuff
Only knew 'Meet Me' by that guy before. I'll have to go through some more now
