Most of the story is just drab instanced content that repeats the same tired mission templates and doesn't really have any story outside a cutscene or 2 at the bookends and some dialogue in the middle of combat

@Unionhawk Yeah, the game does not do a good job of explaining its systems.

I'm still having fun with it though. However, mileage may vary because I'm playing with friends.

A lot of stuff that would otherwise be frustrating to deal with as a solo player mitigated by the fact that we're in Discord and talking to each other.

Freeplay is really poorly designed.

Yeah, the problem is that the mission story pacing is off because everything is done in matchmade multiplayer, so there is a lot less developer-managed control over the pacing

Like, in Mass Effect, Bioware has control over the missions and everything in it: they can show cutscenes, trigger ingame events, stuff like that. But in Anthem, because it's multiplayer, they can't know for sure where all the players are, so they can't do cutscenes or stuff like ambushes from around a corner

you have Fort Tarsis and you choose a mission when you leave it and you can go there with 3 other players

Well, the thing about freeplay is that there are events in the open-world map that you can complete. Except that if you trigger an event, nobody that you're matchmade with in freeplay will know about it unless they're right on top of you.

It's not like Borderlands where you move from one area to another fluidly.

It's essentially a bit like in Starcraft 2, where you got a base, you then select your next mission, you start it and at the end automatically return to the base

Everyone has to find their own path to whatever gender stuff works for them. Some people just have a clear path, some of us have twisty messy ones where the signposts are missing. But they're all different, and lead to different spots. So when I get to see people find a way to clear some of the brambles or find the right roads for them for whatever moment they're in, my heart is happy.
