6:00 PM
ok what on earth is "excessive immersion"

@quartata Poopsocking.
I'm not sure if you are familiar with the culture, but it's not unheard for people in Korea and China to spend days in internet cafes.
I can't remember how often it is, but it's definitely occurred more than once, where a person has been found in an internet cafe dead after gaming for days straight.
Gaming culture is a lot different in the East, partially because of how games are typically consumed.

Yeah there's a reason gaming addiction was recognized by the world health organization
it's not because little billy stayed up until 3am raiding with his buddies in WoW

In the West, the typical gamer has a home set-up. Either a PC or a console that they personally own.
In the East, the typical gamer rents time at an internet cafe.
Personal computing, at least for gaming, is virtually non-existent in the East.

@Yuuki oh ok
I thought it was like blood/gore/realistic skeletons

There's a reason why both Dark Souls ports had issues with the devs tying all sorts of game logic to framerate.

6:06 PM
Like China
OK I'm assuming this is the code:
> Distributing computer programs, apparatus or device not provided or approved by a game products related business entity for the purpose of disturbing normal operation of game products, or producing them for their distribution.
?

I'm seeing a similar text and that's possibly the violation cited. But no news article is really going into depth on the particulars of the case.
Probably the most important clause is "in order to disturb normal operation of game products or producing them for their distribution".
Or from your text, "for the purpose of disturbing normal operation of game products, or producing them for their distribution".
So the violation was for A) making a hack, B) distributing the hack for the purpose of allowing other people to use the hack, and C) selling the hack.
All three had to be true.
But I am not a lawyer, let alone a South Korean lawyer, let alone a South Korean lawyer specializing in the field of game law.
Interestingly, you could argue that Overwatch itself is in violation of the clause "Game products having a view to harming customs by destroying family morals, such as assault on, homicide of or such, of an familial ascendant or descendant" by virtue of having both Ana and Pharah in the game.
It's a dumb argument but I think it could technically be made.

yeah it's dangerously vague IMO
"disturbing normal operation" -- it pretty much all hinges on "disturbing"

I can't say whether it's dangerously vague because laws are weird and I have no legal expertise.

There's probably something else though

For all we know, it could actually be incredibly restrictive.

6:19 PM
@quartata Probably not as much as you think
Many legal systems are more considered with the spirit of the law, aka the intent behind it, then with the letter of it
Canada law is like that I believe
Means you can't twist stuff around with legal nonsense

does making my sentry gun sound like Terry Crews count as normal operation
asking for a friend

I dunno, is aimbotting the exact same thing as personal cosmetics?

Still point was if that's the correct law, then it has nothing to do with money per SE. That's just the reason they chose to prosecute it, ostensibly
@Yuuki no that was a joke
my teleporters making the old spice whistle is game breaking however
can hear it from anywhere

user15026
I feel like there are a lot of random assumptions being made here on a very limited understanding of the actual laws as they're being applied
2

user15026
I'm not sure this is a productive conversation, in its current framing

6:26 PM
Sorry that this has become so polarizing, I didn't really expect that. My original motivation really was just that software IP laws and co. tend to be bad regardless of how they're being applied today
Things are a bit different but we don't really know what the deal is

In any case, these laws likely focus on competitive gaming.

In other news, I should really take another stab at manus in my SL1 run this weekend

It's a big thing in Korea and the government has been making a concerted attempt to grow the industry.

I really do want to kill the big jerk before finishing the run

@Wipqozn Manus is probably the easiest boss for SL1 since you can just suicide in his boss room and then plink him to death with a gajillion wood arrows from outside his fog gate.

6:31 PM
@Yuuki yeah but that's lame

Hmm... I should play Dark Souls 3 tonight, I think.

Q: Java on Ubuntu is so much faster also Optifine makes my fps lower

Matrx007Platform: Ubuntu(preferred) & Windows dual boot Java version: In Ubuntu OpenJDK 8, In Windows Oracle Java JDK 10/8 (tested both, here talking about 8, Java 10 has 10 fps improvement). Why Ubuntu, well Java on Ubuntu is so much faster. Compare 50 fps in Windows min settings and 110 fps in Ubuntu...

@Yuuki I'll probably play that again next
@djsmiley2k is really tempting me into some xcom though
Also @Yuuki too, but for different reasons

@Yuuki if pros were cheating or something then money really is on the line, hell yeah they should prosecute
That I agree on

@Yuuki have you played through souls 3 before?

6:34 PM
Like, unconditionally

@Wipqozn I played some but then stopped because it started stuttering on my super-old rig.

@Yuuki Womp Womp. Which kind of character you playing as?

I've been told DS3 is really different from the previous ones

@Wipqozn I always love pyromancy.
So I pretty much always start as a pyromancer.

@Yuuki pyro is fun.

6:36 PM
I played 1 on console a long time ago

I haven't played a Souls game in a long time so I was a little rusty at it.
Took two tries to beat Iudex.
My dodge timings were all over the place.

Playing Souls and beating Souls I've learned are very distinct

Souls games are like custom designed to be the least compatible games for my psychological gamer profile.
They look like they'd be so fun but I load it up and I just get instantly stressed out and have to stop.

It's such a weird break from Hyrule Warriors, which is ATTACK!ATTACK!ATTACK!

I kind of want Hyrule Warriors for Switch even though I already have it on Wii U.

6:41 PM
Do you have any of the DLC?

Nope, base game only.
No idea what's even in the DLC.
I just wouldn't mind playing it again and I have a Switch handy, but the Wii U is in a room I never go in.

If you don't have the DLC, then getting the Switch version might be nice.
@Exeggutor More characters, more adventure mode maps, extended legend/campaign mode.
IIRC, the base game had like one or two adventure mode maps.

@Yuuki What is "adventure mode", is that the one that's like the classic zelda and each tile is a different challenge?

@Exeggutor Yeah.

I didn't even finish the first map.

6:44 PM
I never counted, but there's like at least seven maps.

That's an insane amount of playtime to get through.

The Switch version has a lot of content over the base game.

I have Mario Tennis and I have Octopath Traveler preordered but I will keep this in mind if I feel like I need even more.

Knack 1 was the original battle royale actually

6:56 PM
dark souls kbd/m support was literally the worst ive ever seen. which is why i stopped playing

FromSoft may have been founded in 1986, but their bulk of their work has been on consoles.
The Japanese game dev job market is almost solely focused on programming for consoles.

Wait, '86? Armored Core was on the PS1...
What were they doing for the first ten years

> FromSoftware was founded on November 1, 1986, and developed productivity software for the first several years of their existence.

Lol

Their first game was King's Field in '94.

7:01 PM
Now they develop anti-productivity software

Q: Minecraft: Bank accounts

user209814I wondered what the smartest way was to make bank accounts in my minecraft world. I originally thought of using /setblock commads and pistons, so using blocks to represent "tokens", but I wondered if there was a way you could use variables in minecraft and if so, how. If not, what is the best way...

8:31 PM
I just noticed that if it wasn't for some people uploading profile pictures, the Google Chat sidebar in my Gmail would otherwise read "BAGGINS".

9:00 PM
@Yuuki I don't know why this amuses me so much but it does

@Ash The hobbit stole our precious emailses!

@Yuuki tricksy! false!

9:12 PM
@Yuuki this depends on what the developer has allowed. I know of at least one game where you are allowed 2 accounts per ID

Q: So the Foundry appears to be quite silly

the bappoI've upgraded quite a few things in the Foundry. However... None of them are actually in effect. Do I have to do something in addition to letting the Engineers spend some time on the project? Or is the game effed?

Q: Can anyone help me clear a whole forest?

KikitheToucanI'm trying to clear a Birch Forest for a future Minecraft Roleplay and /fill x1 y1 z1 x2 y2 z2 log 2 replace air doesn't seem to help. Could it be because I'm playing in 1.12? I think it will take me a while to just fly around using Fire Charges

10:45 PM
I played a few more matches of Mario Tennis in simple mode and I've come to the conclusion that this just isn't a very good game in its current state.
CC @Wipqozn @Yuuki
I probably won't play much more unless one of you wants to play for fun in free play or something.

@Ash the mountains episode of planet earth 2 has bears doing bear things and it is great
it's on US netflix, not sure about canada

user15026
yes good bears

user15026
I am not sure if it is but I will check

(TIL that bears have favorite specific trees to use for scratching their backs, and will travel far after waking from hibernation to get to the best trees)

10:56 PM
I like knowing tihs

they use the branches like a handle and really get into it... it's hard to describe but wonderful to watch

user15026
it sounds pretty great

11:24 PM
@Ash i'm surprised my head didn't explode from that. so god dam cute!

user15026
Isn't it sweet? :)

BRIIIIIIIDGE
I just got my longest distance ride ever, and also longest time riding
Only 18 KM n 73 minutes, but it's past where I was 2 years ago before I completely shit the bed on eating healthy and being active!

@Wipqozn what game is this in?

@GodEmperorDune Real Life: The Game

@Wipqozn i heard the season pass for that sucked

11:39 PM
@GodEmperorDune It's really expensive, and you'll be constantly paying for new DLC which wasn't included in the season pass

@Wipqozn right?! so why even offer a season pass in the first place

Exactly!
zero mission run is laaaaaate, but at least that means there was no chance I'd miss it

@GodEmperorDune it also has monthly subscription fees for all kinds of things :(

I wish they'd say something about how long it would be until the zero mission race actually starts. Curious if I've got time for a quick thing.
@Exeggutor Due to balance issues?

Q: Xbox One S controller (via Bluetooth to Linux) isn't binding Start or Select in Nestopia

RolloI'm trying to use the emulator Nestopia with my Bluetooth Xbox One S controller. I'm able to use the controller completely fine in other games and emulators, but for whatever reason when I'm binding the buttons for Nestopia, it doesn't detect that I'm pressing Start or Select. Every other button ...

It's almost 30 minutes late now and they haven't said anything or updated the schedule, really annoying :/
Finally here we go
