Hmm non-programmer version: Git does a bunch of math (a one way hash (sha-hash)) to make sure that every commit is uniquely identified by one name. That hash is represented as a hexadecimal number. That program modifies the commit slightly (changes the time it was "saved") until the calculated hash starts with a certain text

Federation essentially means you agree on a standard, like a protocol

and email is the best example for it

In networking, it essentially means that 2 networks with separate programs can still agree with each other through a previously agreed upon standard

so in the context of Signal, it would mean e.g. being able to send a message from a Signal app to a whatsapp or telegram app without needing an account with those other services or they needing an account with you

As a counter-argument, I believe that we need federated systems if we want to preserve privacy.

Problem is that if you federate 2 clients, that means that both clients effectively cannot change their protocols anymore, unless they want to risk breaking the interoperability

@Ave IRC definitely counts as federated; it's less common these days, but historically a lot of IRC networks were federations of individual servers with each server owned and run by a different person (or team) with their own hardware, policies, etc

If you've ever connected to an IRC network and seen "we are not accepting link requests" or similar in the motd, that's what it's referring to -- the existing network administrators don't want to add new servers not under their control.

When trying to write my own library I got really confused as some stuff were just, well, not exactly stuff that were described in the RFC.

These days most networks have a single netadmin team responsible for the entire network, and sometimes individual serveradmins answerable to the netadmins, but it's still "a network" that happens to have multiple servers as an implementation detail, rather than "a federation of servers".

@Ave ircv3.net documents the (ongoing) work on IRC3

Part of the promise of irc3 is that it's adding capability support and attempting to standardize such extensions under different capabilities, so the client can then ask the server "what capabilities do you support" and get back an answer about what weirdness the server is going to do.
