Interesting thing, the line of the Marquis de Lafayette are all considered to be natural born citizens. No matter if they're currently French citizens or not.

And there's some case law regarding citizens born in US territories that later became states (Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona pre-statehood) and military territories (John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone.)

If you are the child of a US citizen you do not need to apply for American citizenship. You have it regardless of where you are born or live unless you explicitly renounce it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Interesting. I know in most places you are not granted citizenship automatically but once you fill out some paperwork, become a citizen automatically (I've had friends with this situation for other countries)

Similarly if you are born on US soil you are an American citizen regardless of the citizenship of your parents. Again, this is automatic.

The flip side is that the US is also uniquely expansive in how it claims you are subject to US laws and taxation - American citizens abroad are supposed to pay federal income taxes.

Which is something that almost no other country does to their expats.
