Q: CSGO Cooldown system reductions after more than one 7 day ban? Do bans affect getting overwatch?

MykstrI get cooldown often.... I kill teammates, yeah, I'm that guy. That might be why I'm so low ranked(GN2) anyway, I understand first time banned 30 mins then an 2 hours and so on and so on. I get cooldown for a week everytime now and I have been for the last few month, I usually play a few days bef...

Does the Bridge not know what inb4 is?
I guess not, wow.
Do you not see my message containing the video before @Yuuki's?
Clearly I am victorious.
Clearly.
I'm sorry, your victory failed to get through the compiler.
17:08
@Texenox I think it would be more accurate to say that nobody here cares what the "strict" definition is, according to Urban Dictionary and KYM
@murgatroid99 Pretty much this.
Yeah, who cares what urban dictionary thinks
@Unionhawk
I don't
@murgatroid99 But it still makes no sense the way the Bridge uses it.
Oh who am I kidding, nothing makes sense in The Bridge!
17:09
Now you're starting to get it.
@Texenox "I got that post in before you" seems pretty obvious to me
@murgatroid99 Actually, it's used to foreshadow a possible event that may happen as a result of somethin else.

@Texenox I think it would be more accurate to say that nobody here cares what the "strict" definition is, according to Urban Dictionary and KYM
@murgatroid99 BAH.
You're not getting it: the fact that people use it differently here does not make it "make no sense"
17:12
Thank you for correcting the entire Bridge. We will take your correction into consideration in the future, and a board of directors will decide whether to accept or ignore your correction this Thursday at 7pm UTC-5.
@murgatroid99 Fine, I was just referring to the fact that it looked like people use it randomly from the chatlogs.

@Sterno Obviously it's @Wipqozn's fault. His large turtle presence is blocking your intertubes.
@Sterno Wait wat
@Texenox Did you look at the context of those chat logs, or just the individual messages?
17:14
If you look at that, it's primarily used the way people used to say "Ninja'd"
@murgatroid99 Individual messages.
@Unionhawk right?
@FAE He should get his large turtle presence out of my intertubes then. Gross
As a bonus, wireless is (usually) fine, coming in at 17mbps
@Sterno when it's not wired to the router, how is it connected
directly to the modem
i.e., no router involved
(which also means no wireless in the house :( )
@Texenox "These messages make no sense [without context]." <- literally what you are doing
17:18
@Unionhawk WELP.
WHAT'RE YA GON' DO.
A message containing just the word "yes" makes no sense out of context what's your point

@FAE none here fortunately, my parents have a party tent thing that's been damaged (but it was like 20 euros or something so meh)

There's a bunch of books that are the tv episode in novel form from my understanding, I thought they were pretty good but I like dr who
@FAE That sounds all kinds of awesome.
"A Sound of Thunder" is an influential science fiction short story by Ray Bradbury, first published in Collier's magazine in the June 28, 1952 issue and Playboy in June 1956. As of 1984, it was the most re-published science fiction story up to the present time. The story is inspired by the concept of the Butterfly Effect, although it was published a decade before physicist Edward Lorenz introduced the phrase into popular usage. == Plot summary == The story is set in the year 2055, when time travel has become a practical reality, and the company Time Safari Inc. offers wealthy adventurers the chance...

She said she probably won't be wearing the springstelten all weekend, mostly Friday, but yeah
@Sterno Magic School Bus.
@FAE it's been a while, I don't remember them =[
I should reread that series
@Sterno All of Heinlein's books that include time travel are amazing
FAE
FAE
@Arperum Yeah, she's been planning this costume for years. It was going to be the main reason I went, to see her, but we've just got a lot of stuff going on recently and we're sort of worn out. x_x
One highly rated time travel novel is the "The Doomsday Book". It is one of the most boring novels I have ever read.
17:34
I'm a big fan of Variable Star
Browsing some Internet lists, and it appears that The Time Machine is one of the few time travel books I've read.
@Sterno Magic School Bus.
Ah, here's the one I was looking for!
I have an appreciation for older time travel stories, such as the Heinlein stuff, Bradbury, etc, but I've A) Already read the old stuff and B) Find that while it did "new" things at the time, those are all just sort of considered basic time travel now.
@Sterno Read Heinlein's "By his Bootstraps"
17:34
I'm not explaining that well
It's fascinating
@Yuuki That's a kids book, right?
Unless you count books with time travel in them, like the second Dragonlance trilogy.
You can read it online
17:35
@PrivatePansy aha! There was a film based on that
@JasonBerkan That's what I count. In fact, it tends to be what I prefer.
Well
I knew I knew that title from somewhere but I knew I didn't read the book
@KevinvanderVelden I believe the film was kind of crap
I tend to enjoy it more back and forth
17:36
@Sterno They go to all sorts of time periods!
I read this collection and liked it quite a bit

@KevinvanderVelden The cloud of yellow monkeys that helped Orlando out when he first got in. I haven't finished the series yet, but I've read the first 2 books twice, lol. I need to get around to finishing it. A friend of mine has been a part of the Shadowmarch community for ages and has met Tad Williams quite a few times and also like, his kids and stuff too.
@FAE nice, yeah I looked it up but don't remember it =p
It's been a few years since I last read it
At least 10 I think? I dunno
@FAE You really should finish them, IIRC, they get better later on.
FAE
FAE
Yeah, I'd need to reread the first 2 before I finished it as well, it's been like 5 years.
@Arperum I never like... planned to stop, I just got distracted by other books, haha. I really enjoy them though.
17:38
Alternate reality books (where people know they're in an alternate reality, or can switch back and forth) are also fascinating to me

@Sterno The Long Earth?
Definitely not Methuselah's Children.
@FAE I actually added that avatar after I sent out the requests because I didn't realize until sending out the requests that most people wouldn't know who I was

I fear time travel. Mostly because I think Rick and Morty scenarios will play out from it.
I spent a while browsing the Time Travel goodreads group, but man, they recommend some really boring books.
@Wipqozn One thing though, the person who asked this hasn't been around since the beginning of April.
Or I guess boring might not be the right word, but... I don't know. If I'm already interested in time travel books, telling me to go to "The Time Machine" just feels like maybe you haven't read enough to have some better recommendations

FAE
FAE
17:49
@JasonBerkan I've never actually sat down and watched it myself
@FAE I think I primarily like it when things change on them unexpectedly. I don't know how to define it. A book where someone goes back in time, observes things, and then comes home (with nothing changing, and having been fairly certain nothing would) is tetchnically a time travel book, but not what I'm interested in. Hence me being bored by Doomsday Book
@Sterno Have you played 999 and Virtue's Last Reward?
Something where they're suddenly in an alternate version of their lives, or are playing around with the present by manipulating the past, or the future by manipulating the present, are all interesting to me
@Powerlord no
There's... kinda time travel in it, in that you can go back in time to change what you've already done.
Virtue's Last Reward more so than 999.
The worst timetravel book I've ever read was Timeline. It was so bad that I never read anything by Crichton ever again
17:51
On a show like Stargate, I love the time travel and alternate reality episodes, even when they usually suck. I don't know. That's just my jam.
Radiant Historia has a similar idea, but is an RPG.
FAE
FAE
@MadScientist oh god I read that too
@MadScientist It was not great. Nor was the movie. Though it lead to an awesome gif.
In fact, I think Uchikoshi was heavily influenced by Radiant Historia when making Virtue's Last Reward as they both have a similar Flowchart thing going on.
FAE
FAE
@Sterno Cool. :) I'm just curious. I always like hearing about when people love certain stuff.
17:52
The worst was the motivation of the villain, it just was so thoroughly stupid
Can't find the .gif :(
@MadScientist I admit, I've only read one Crichton book.
FAE
FAE
@MadScientist It's been over 10 years since I read it but I don't remember much other than it feeling contrived and being kinda dumb
People say the book was better than the movie, and it was I guess, but usually you'd say that because the book was good, not simply less awful
The movie had the benefit of being over in 2 hours.
and explosions
The book manages to contradict itself almost immediately. They make a point of saying that it's travel to an alternative universe, so no danger of changing anything important. But a scene later they find the watch of their boss in a dig site, directly contradicting the whole thing.
17:54
Oh wait, I may have also read Crichton's A Case of Need.
So while looking for Time Travel recommendations I came across reviews of the Outlander series
The motivation of the villain to build the time travel/alternate universe machines was to explore the past to build authentic theme parks
Is that actually a romance series disguised as fantasy/time travel?
Because that's what all the reviews are focused on
Or could you chop out the romance bits and still have a decent story?
FAE
FAE
@MadScientist YESSSS THIS, AUGH, I FORGOT ABOUT THIS

This is urgent. The vulnerability is triggered by nothing more than the phone receiving the message, and the attacker has access to system, not just the user sandbox

FAE
FAE
They are placed in the romance section, to the author's chagrin actually, as she would prefer they weren't.
Oh @Sterno, this guy has a lot of things about how time travel works in films, maybe there's one you haven't seen? qntm.org/time
FAE
FAE
There are a lot of romance aspects, but the historical fiction aspect of it is really well done. Gabaldon puts a ton of research into the books.
I haven't read them in a really long time though.
17:57
Is the time travel in those books used as anything other than simply putting a modern character in a past setting? Like, do the past and present ever interact?
The setting for MMS auto download is on by default, I believe
This reminds me of Day of the Tentacle, which also incorporated time travel into the game very nicely
I really wish someone would put that game on a digital platform
(that isn't The Pirate Bay)
I expect a special edition of this to come out at some point like with the Monkey Island games
Hmmm... what's the programming bug type where you check something before you change it, but since you didn't acquire a lock on it first, another thread could change it before you did anything with it?
18:01
@Powerlord a race condition?
Race condition, yeah
In computer science, read-modify-write is a class of atomic operations (such as test-and-set, fetch-and-add, and compare-and-swap) that both read a memory location and write a new value into it simultaneously, either with a completely new value or some function of the previous value. These operations prevent race conditions in multi-threaded applications. Typically they are used to implement mutexes or semaphores. These atomic operations are also heavily used in non-blocking synchronization. Maurice Herlihy (1991) ranks atomic operations by their consensus numbers, as follows: ∞: memory-to-memory...
Very related
In software development, time of check to time of use (TOCTTOU or TOCTOU, pronounced "TOCK too") is a class of software bug caused by changes in a system between the checking of a condition (such as a security credential) and the use of the results of that check. This is one example of a race condition. A simple example is as follows: Consider a Web application that allows a user to edit pages, and also allows administrators to lock pages to prevent editing. A user requests to edit a page, getting a form which can be used to alter its content. Before the user submits the form, an administrator...
This one
yes
Basically, remember to use your mutexes or one of the atomic operations I linked
@murgatroid99 Well, in this case I was warning someone else about something.
18:06
@Wipqozn No one likes you. Even your mom was just telling me how she doesn't like you.
@Powerlord Though, it looks like that article concentrates on file-based inter-process race conditions, which aren't solved by mutexes
Oh wow. I missed this. Binding of Issac finally released on Nintendo stuff last month?

Although right now my wireless is pulling 1mpbs instead of the usual 17, so maybe it's not my PCs fault at the moment

@MadMAxJr I think it was last week
At one point today it was up to 9mbps (which is good... the card itself only supports 10mpbs)
I haven't tried today, but past experience shows that if I just plug directly from pc to modem, I get a steady 10mbps

@Sterno Sorry for the delay, my browser crashed and then I had to work on grabbing dinner. The author is a research scientist actually, got her doctorate in ecology sciences or something, so she's pretty thorough in what she writes.
@MadMAxJr Whoa, really? Nice

C_BFor instance, if the world was created when version 1.7 was out and then 1.8 was released. Questions So, is there any way to upgrade a local minecraft world? Or does this happen automatically?

@Unionhawk This is why programming is difficult.
Someone needs to invent a language that just reads my mind through magic... somehow.
@Unionhawk unicode.
heh
indeed
20:08
everything is broken
People have tried to create a natural-language type programming language. The problem is that programming is fundamentally the process of telling a computer exactly what you want it to do
I don't know about reddit but this person right here won /r/homestuck
Yeah yeah yeah I know fundamentally that would never ever work
Man, homestuck is still a thing?
@MadMAxJr 1 more update, then a long pause, then the final content stretch
20:09
And then Andrew Hussie will finally admit he's out of ideas?
@MadMAxJr You do know he's working on an Homestuck-themed game, possibly on Steam
@Unionhawk I guess the real problem is that natural language is high-context, and getting that context into the computer is hard
And my magic language exists in a space where I don't make stupid mistakes anyway
That damn context always ruins everything
Which...
Is coincidentally a space that fails to exist
20:11
Yeah, I recall the kickstarter thing. I just lost interest about a year in, secretly wishing there was more Problem Sleuth. :P
@Unionhawk Your language is... Unicode?
@MadMAxJr there was exactly as much problem sleuth as required to unleash his (spoiler alert) most magnificent masterpiece in the history of world unto the world.
(warning: cartoony ghost tail muscles)
Sadly I cannot observe that from here.
@badp The day Andrew Hussie out-shitposted /r/homestuck
even my cat started staring at it in pure admiration
Hmm. I guess that needs sound for context.
That or I'm mistakenly looking for context in homestuck again.
20:15
@MadMAxJr You might need to read the previous seven thousand pages for context.
I'm just trying to dodge writing some javascript, that sounds like work!
seven thousand pages is a lot of dodging.
@badp I think it's closer to eight thousand at this point
@murgatroid99 Page 1 is #1901
@badp And the current page is #9829
20:17
so, closer to 8k indeed.
There's a few holes here and there IIRC but not nearly enough
Nevermind the raw page count is pointless anyway
I think the pages that aren't numbers make up for the holes
Trippy flash and the occasional puppet antic escapade.
(although the heaviest flash animations usually have a few expository pages explaining what the fuck just happened a little afterwards so avoiding double counting is super hard)
@MadMAxJr the latest of which is about 4 pages old
Trying to recall the sword thing from many moons ago.. Caldescratch!
puppets were also discussed at great length a few days ago
20:28
@MadMAxJr Interesting fact about that sword: it was created from the sword Caledfwlch, which is the Welsh name for Excalibur. Excalibur is also called Caliburn

IF targets both enemies, but Neptune does not. You can't explain that.
Neptune is clearly tired of this shit.

Fun user ticket of the day:
User to other users: "Hey, who's been updating this info! You're not supposed to do that!"
Other user responds: "We didn't. They're linked in different areas. IT should fix that."
Gets sent to me.
I respond: "Investigated. Issue: They're not linked. This is because somebody forgot a setting when setting up this job. "
aka: User error.

Q: What's different in Journey for PS4?

splattered bitsJourney is now available for PS4. Is there anything different and/or new in this version of the game compared to the original game, released on the PS3?

@Frank Recommendation: Replace user with refurbished user.
@MadMAxJr I have a better solution: Jettison the client, and the job, and get a new one.
I would like to order several replacement users
@badp Preferably ones with common sense and enough brains to actually provide additional information when something breaks.

@Frank Don't get me started, man.
And don't call me in a panic when they choose the wrong damn printer so it doesn't print.
@badp I've probably seen and experienced much of it.

Q: Hold reset while you turn power off

schil227Why are these directions required? Do some games actually run instructions that would be interrupted if the player just hits the power button? Note I'm not looking for speculation, but rather a technical distinction between what would happen when the user holds down reset then power vs. just wh...

@Frank I've only had to deal with three weeks of it and I'm already so done with it
@badp Just think; you only have another 40 years of it to look forward to!
@Frank oh I'm not actually in a support role. A bunch of people are testing our product before we ship it
Week 1: totally productive, important bug reports
Week 2+: censored
they aren't even USERS.

Week 375: Food supplies are low. We suspect accounting has turned feral. We are hoping to trade with the HR tribe for fire making materials.
@badp And trust me, users will find even more esoteric bugs.
You'll have one submit a ticket as follows:
@Frank Esoteric? They make Jeff's giant S of bludgeoning seem totally inadequate
Smashed face into keyboard. Submitted. Clicked back. Jumped up and down on keyboard. Broke keyboard, but submitted form again. Errored. Fix, please.

@KevinvanderVelden OMG YOU'RE BUILDING FACING WORLDS
@Frank FUZZY TESTING IS USEFUL
21:58
@badp MUST TEST ALL EDGE CASES! MUST FIX THEM ALL, TOO! BECAUSE ALL CODE MUST WORK FOR ALL CASES!
Not useful: "I misread the spec and what happens is a bug."
Not useful: "when this happens, I expect this other thing to happen." This other thing is not on spec.
@badp I get to speak to our Australian branch one day this week.
Not useful: "when dealing with this out-of-case spec, the software does not behave to spec."
And explain that what they want their inventory control software to do, it's not supposed to.
And when the previous programmer added it anyways, he broke the shit out of it.
