Q: Weapons upgraded automatically

Chris NicholsonI definitely crafted myself a Copper Broadsword. I remember because it was the first thing I crafted and it had taken me ages to find all the copper ore. Later on when I went to craft a new weapon (found silver by this point) I noticed my copper broadsword had a green line at the bottom (+12% da...

@GrumpyLazers This question is so bad.
@BenBrocka Crap, how long ago was this firmware pushed? I just updated mine the other day.
@Powerlord Last night
13:17
@BenBrocka Oh, OK, I'm good then.
Good morning, Bridge
Good morning, Trolls!
Good morning, Goats Gruff!
@OrigamiRob of course he is. But we will never forget.
Also, can we talk about the Apache Tracker for a minute?
@LessPop_MoreFizz That white guy who wears the offensive and stereotypical Native American headdress?
13:29
Good afternoon, Users! and Powerlord!
Good morning non-prinnies!
@OrigamiRob Yeah, him! What a jerk!
Can you believe be said he used "Indian Magicks"?
@LessPop_MoreFizz I haven't heard from him since he claimed to use "Indian Magic" at the Post Office.
Also, I wonder where I can get my own hover cat.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Gypsy magics are better. Just ask Pinkie Pie
> This is no duplicate, because the question has the opposite direction. In this question the effect is known, but the menu option is unknown. In the other question the menu option is known, but the effect is unknown. The other question was no help for me, because I did know the name for the menu option.
"Not a dupe, because it's the other side of the same mechanic!"

Re: hover cat: STAY TUNED.
@kalina Is it that important?
You know, technically I guess it's only @GrumpyLazers and the other bots that are Trolls, since no one else actually lives under The Bridge.
yes
it means I'm no longer here
@fbueckert Her job is actually to maintain the time until they go home. It was cheaper than a new clock.
13:43
WOW
you just became my least favourite person
This position changes quite quickly
Sorry @OrigamiRobot I hope you enjoyed your run
he is only my fake least favourite person
ooooh, so there is a True Form Least Favourite Person Ladder.
@kalina Did you mean "Least Favorite Fake Person"?
@OrigamiRobot Now, now, robots are not fake people.

Q: How many neighbors can I have?

OrigamiRobotMy town is starting to look pretty crowded in places. What is the maximum number of NPC residents my town can have? Is there anything I can do to affect this?

@OrigamiRobot no, as in I pretend to hate you in public but will happily chat with you on Steam when I should be going to bed
scribbles a line casually
a line?
hm?
a line of what?
13:48
what?
coke? mdma? amphetamines?
What line? What are we queueing for?
there is no queue
Is it ritual ban time yet?
I thought that was tomorrow
I don't deserve banning, I have insulted nobody in the last few minutes
13:49
It's a ritual
There's no need for a reason
I don't take parts in rituals
@kalina I'll be the ritual scapegoat if you need it.
@fbueckert How heroic.
@fbueckert I wouldn't want you to get banned on my behalf
Don't worry. The ritual is very fair and equal opportunity
13:50
@OrigamiRobot I have much experience in being blamed for things that aren't my fault.
There's going to be bans for eeverybody
It comes with having four sisters.
eevery
@kalina eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverybody
you should ban yourself for butchering the English language
13:51
Meh
@kalina I'd have to be banned, too.
@fbueckert I only have two and I know this to be true.
Capital-M meh
2 hours, 38 minutes, 47 seconds...
I do that daily basis.
13:51
@OrigamiRobot 1 suffices
stop with your sexism
Not my fault I don't have brothers!
having sisters means you are going to grow up to be well rounded men, with respect for the superiority of women
I see you have no brothers, too
@kalina Respect, yes.
13:52
I have a brother
Superiority....no.
@kalina My sisters are the last people to contribute to that.
@kalina Does he know?
Just different in different ways.
@badp he knows that I am superior, yes
13:53
TIL: Pokemon BW2 has a hack check so you can only use legit Pokemon in online battles.
@fbueckert cheater
@kalina Reader.
I don't even own BW2.
inb4 pirate.
@fbueckert pirate
yarr
@kalina foul, victory goes to @fbueckert
@fbueckert cool
13:55
I have a picture relevant to me saying yarr
@BenBrocka Yeah, it was sort of needed.
no I'm not going to link it
...no one asked for it!
pre-empted
@fbueckert I wonder how they do this.
13:55
links to @OrigamiRobot on Steam
The hack programs can alter every aspect of a pokemon.
I imagine it can also flip the "nope, this is legit" flag.
@StrixVaria Probably an online check of what moves a Pokemon can and can't learn.
@fbueckert What you mean all those people with perfect IV, level 100, all shiny teams were cheating?!
And if a Pokemon has a move it literally CANNOT learn, you know it's hacked.
Not sure how it handles IVs, though.
I thought it was funny, in the battle tower or whatever in Diamond, all of your NPC opponents use 100% shiney pokemon. Indicating that they, the NPCs, are clearly cheating bastards
13:57
the solution obviously has something to do with cake
@fbueckert if the checks are made client-side they can be "easily" overridden
@badp On a handheld?
@fbueckert How do you "cheat" to begin with?
@fbueckert also wonder guard on pokemon with no weakness
I suppose some memory editing program/hack/chip/mod/something?
13:58
@badp he's not about to reveal all of his secrets to you
@BenBrocka That, too.
@badp they're online matches, I would assume the server checks
learn how to exploit by yourself
@badp With flashcards, you can easily transfer savegames back and forth to a PC.
Drop it back to handheld, and now you can trade it to unsuspecting people.
@fbueckert Oh. Okay.
So no direct access to the game's memory.
13:59
@badp save editors and simple gameshark like memory editors and all sorts of stuff
because if there IS a gameshark like memory editor, they could just patch those checks away, if they are client-side
I'm not sure there's a Gameshark-esque device for DS.
@fbueckert Some flashcarts have built in Gameshark-esque features.
@OrigamiRobot I hadn't realized.
the regular DS can also be emulated on a computer
14:02
I know the R4DS did.
dunno if there isn't yet a 3DS emulator around
@badp I haven't found one
Morning, Bridge
@badp There's a 3DS flashcard coming out at the end of the month.
It's pretty restrictive, though, and hella expensive.
2 hours, 38 minutes, 47 seconds
@fbueckert Well I guess blatant ones could be removed, but there's still IV and EV hacking so that you don't have to waste 15 hours per pokemon.

Q: Does your level serve any purpose outside of PvE?

spaunyIn Guild Wars 2 you can play PvE, WvW, and PvP. When you play WvW and PvP you are at level 80, not your actual level. So is your level meaningless outside of PvE, or is there some reason for me to level my character even if I only intend to play in PvP and WvW?

I don't think that should have been closed in the first place, but I've edited it up to remove all the pointless fluff he point in there. There's no reason it shouldn't be re-opened now.
@StrixVaria I doubt it could be perfect, but there's a difference between "Within the realm of possibility" and, "There's no way this thing should ever exist."
@Wipqozn I agree. Voting to re-open
It's a good question
@Wipqozn RIP @MarkTrapp

weird, close list keeps the name? They're renamed to user343253253523541234 in most places
@BenBrocka Yeah, it's weird.
14:26
Thought you might be interested in that.
@Wipqozn He has a point.
@fbueckert In previous games, he forced you to upgrade your house once you finished paying off the loan.
@OrigamiRobot What happens once you get all the upgrades?
Because so many of us totally don't want better houses
14:32
I want some 0% interest loans in real life. I don't care if I'm not asked first.
@fbueckert you get a statue for paying off your debt in AC one. Gold for first, silver for second, bronze for third to pay off the loan
@RonanForman That's what I say.
If someone gives me an unlimited, interest free loan, hell yeah I'd take it.
@fbueckert Quite. Thanks for pointing it out
@SaintWacko I figured he'd post something like that. That "voting ring" was happening on SO, at the very least, as well.
@fbueckert I'm glad I brought it to light, then :)
Also, hellbanning is an awesome idea
14:38
@SaintWacko More counterproductive than useful, I feel.
It wouldn't take much to determine if you're hellbanned, and if you are, you know to abandon the account.
@fbueckert In this case, yes. Their questions were already only being answered by each other, so they really wouldn't have seen a difference
@SaintWacko The trick with that is that they still get privileges.
Could you imagine a voting ring with 3K rep each?
They could close and re-open questions regardless of community policy.
@SaintWacko No really it isn't.
@SaintWacko I can definitely see a couple instances were a hellban would be super effective...
One chat thing I've used before used hellbans. Didn't even tell you that you were banned but let everyone else know
and one of my friends like banning people as a joke.
14:42
@Powerlord The way I've seen hellbans implemented is that no one knows. Your posts don't appear for other people but as far as you know people just aren't responding to you.
So no one else even knows you're there, and you think everyone is just ignoring you.
It's kind of a hilarious concept.
@fbueckert Oh, I can't imagine they'd still have privileges. Not on other people's questions, at least
@SaintWacko It'd be too much work to implement properly.
@StrixVaria Until you're on the receiving end of it I can see why you might think that.
Having been on the receiving end of it, it's downright sadistic.
@Powerlord Oh, I think it's terrible in practice.
If someone's banned, tell him he is and tell him why.

Why thank you, Git! Random spurious commit messages are JUST what I wanted!
15:17
@MartinSojka Is that in response to me? If so, despite me being the only dev and keeping my two local repos on different computers up to date, git decided to helpfully generate a Merge branch 'master' commit on this repo.
@Powerlord Git is too complicated for its own good
I think it happened when I deleted a now-defunct branch that I forgot to remove when I merged it.

@kalina What are you counting down towards?
For something that doesn't even involve user interaction

@Fluttershy No, but it should be starting soon.
GoG actually started theirs already.

@BenBrocka It's just the very definition of "strawman".
@FEichinger Reminds me of EA's "people think we're the worst company because they're homophobes" thing
@BenBrocka How'd they figure that?
@BenBrocka A bit, yes. But EA's message was less of a "because they're homophobes" but a "they'll be associated with homophobes".
@RonanForman EA defended itself with "But we stand up for the LGBT community SO MUCH and we take SO MUCH flak for that!"
16:08
@RonanForman They one time had an event for LGBT so clearly all anger at them is because of homophobes not because of their consistently poor business practices
@BenBrocka Oh, you actually gotta give them credit for their pro-LGBT mindset. The sad thing is that they most likely do that for either a) fixing their PR or b) free publicity.
I don't have to give them credit for PR stunts
"I was nice to a black guy once. Please ignore the human-sized patches of upturned soil in the back yard."
@fbueckert Now they need to allow you to sell or give away your games, and I might start to be persuaded they're not all evil.
@MartinSojka This is definitely a step in that direction.
The EU already ruled that they have to allow owners to be able to sell their games on Steam, so it's progressing.
@fbueckert That passed? I don't know how that would work.
16:16
@RonanForman Revoke license to user A, add license to user B.
@RonanForman I was pretty sure it had. I don't live in the EU, so I'm not 100% on the details.
@fbueckert It has.
@FEichinger So if I were to make a digital product and then sell you the file, do I have to allow you to resell?
11 minutes, 2 seconds
If so, you have the right to sell it to others at half my price. Despite the fact you didn't make it. And if not, where do you draw the line?
16:19
@RonanForman You're mistaking resale and redistribution here. You are only allowed to sell your copy. That means: After the transfer, you no longer have a copy yourself, and only one person has gotten the copy from you.
@fbueckert Holy shit that guy is hostile.
Which is very easy for Steam to implement. It's much harder with DRM-free distribution.
@Wipqozn Yeah. And people wonder why I'm so anti-new-user.
@FEichinger I see, you can sell your product that you bought of me. But can't keep it after doing so.
@RonanForman Yep.
16:21
@RonanForman Exactly.
Just like physical goods.
@fbueckert IT's a good example of why you shouldn't need to comment when downvoting.
@Wipqozn Hell, I didn't even VTC it. But all I get is, "You're wrong, this is different, I don't care about your rules."
//inserting food
@fbueckert what the hell? The closure points him to an answer
Some people are just jerks
@BenBrocka Indeed.
16:24
@BenBrocka Exactly.
I'd say this question is actually improved by being marked as a duplicate.
I didn't even know what he was talking about at first; I figured there was a limitation between using Magic Weapon and Familiar at the same time.
@FEichinger Technically with a DRM-free version, reselling just involves me giving you a working/installable copy of the game and removing my own access to the game entirely. It's just impossible to enforce that I don't have the copy, and with systems like GoG I can, problematically, redownload the item freely
An answer has already been posted to the question. There's nothing else someone could add to an answer that wouldn't be duplicating the content in the other questions. The duplicate closure results in users who don't know about elective mode discovered the answer stated in a concise format in the posted answer, and then they can learn more by visiting the dupped question.
D: Planescape: Torment is only $5 on gog! Curse you bi-weekly paychecks!
@Wipqozn But I didn't know what it was! It's different!
16:27
In fact this is a good example of why duplicates exist.
@Fluttershy If you want it, something can be arranged.
@fbueckert I think I know where this is going.
@Wipqozn Most likely.
@fbueckert I will check with you when I am off work. In 6-ish hours.
Unless you're thinking bridge-fic. In which case, no.
16:29
@fbueckert Dang, I was getting ready to queue the creepy porn music and everything.

@fbueckert I'm always thinking bridge-fic
@kalina lucky... I have many more hours
@BenBrocka Bridge-fic is best fic.
@Fluttershy No credit card? I buy everything on card and I just pay so I never get interest/angry calls from Tom Nook
16:31
@fbueckert I was going to offer my condolences that he had played so long without elective mode, but then I read the comments and instead I was happy that he was crippled for so long.
Honestly, every time I realize elective mode is a thing I want to kick an orphan.
@Wipqozn It should be the thing, with no alternative.
@StrixVaria Yes, exactly.
The fact it exists is insulting.
And therefore shouldn't have a name and discussions.
@BenBrocka Credit cards get me in trouble. <_< So.. I avoid them.
16:32
Not to mention they've hidden it away in some back menu no one will find.
Aww. You guys flagged that comment of his.
@fbueckert I BURNINATED ANOTHER COMMENT
I doubt he'll ever be back.
And to that, I say, "Good riddance"
I know they did it to help users learn good skill structure, but you know what's an even better way to do that? Let people experiment and then discover which combinations work and which fail.
When someone keeps dying to the same area the first thing they will do is start experimenting with their skills.
@Wipqozn The most popular Wizard build right now has 3 skills from the same "group".
16:35
Are you able to retag a question and edit it at the same time?
@StrixVaria Yup. That too.
@Sconibulus Yes.
I think I just tried to do that and failed
I wouldn't say that having to pick one of each group is "good" structure.
It's just arbitrary structure.
@StrixVaria No, I just mean they're trying to give users balance in their skills.
As opposed to just picking a bunch of skills which all do the same thing and consume mana or something.
but you learn that's a terrible idea by playing and failing.
@Wipqozn yeah, I definitely failed...
Oh, is it because I can retag, but can't edit on my own yet?
16:36
@Sconibulus Probably.
I have no idea how much rep you have.
But I'm assuming less than 2k.
about 1850
but greater than the retag limit, which I think is 500.
in anycase, the point is, Diablo 3 failed on many, many levels and was plagued with bad decision after bad decision.
IT's still a good game, but in it's current form it just doesn't compare to Diablo 2 as far as I'm concerned.
I was let down by Diablo 3, but I'm not disappointed about that because Torchlight is a thing and I can always just play that if I start jonesing for an ARPG again.
@Wipqozn It never has.
Fan-made mods are something that also helped D2 immensely.
@fbueckert They helped, sure, but Diablo 2 is an excellent game all around.
16:40
@Wipqozn I concur.
The battlechest for Diablo 2 still sells for $40 for a reason.
I think much of it came about from the fact that we didn't have devs telling us what is and isn't "fun".
Diablo 3 just simplified the formula way, way too much. Not to mention they completely ruined items.
They made some good decisions. I like the fact that you now will use multiple skills in Diablo 3, as opposed to just using 1 or 2 like you did in Diablo 2.
And being able to customize skills was a nice idea too.
But the complete and utter lack of any sort of skill or attribute tree was just stupid.
@Wipqozn I sorta get why they did that.
And, much like elective mode, the skill tree was removed because they assumed it was too hard for players. That is they seem to think their playerbase is stupid.
16:43
@Fluttershy Ah...I can't currently put more on my card than is in my checking account anyway. Stupid being young credit limits
@Wipqozn D2 basically had one or two cookie cutter builds for each class. They took it out because what good is a skill tree if nobody actually uses it?
@fbueckert Because it's fun figuring out which builds to use. Finding out what works, what doesn't. Plus as you're leveling up it gives you a sense of progression. I honestly didn't care about leveling in Diablo 3 at all. Half the time I didn't even notice I leveled.
Besides, the solution to the cookie cutter build solution is to fix the skill tree. Don't just remove it. That's just lazy.
I didn't think we marked things as duplicates just because the answers were the same if the questions were different. Maybe it's just me. — GnomeSlice 11 mins ago
Dammit, @Gnome! Again!?
@Wipqozn I happily agree with that. They took the easy way out.
Besides, part of the reason Diablo 2 had cookie cutter builds has because you'd usually just build your entire build around one skill.
The biggest problem with the skill tree was that if you didn't use a specific build, you gimped your ability to progress.
The difficulty ratcheted up immensely if you didn't go for maximum efficiency.
16:49
That's a problem, but something you can address with good skill tree design.
Also the ability to freely respec.
One of the biggest problems I had with Diablo 2 is that you could never respec your character. Sure, the sense of permanency could be fun, but it sucks to get all the way to level 40 only to realize your build is crap and you need to start over.
Plus a lot of cookie cutter builds will often be crap until higher levels, and those lower levels can just be boring.
@Wipqozn That was deliberate 90's game design.
It added "replay value" to make you have to re-do it.
The ability to freely respec was one thing Diablo 3 did better than Diablo 2.
@fbueckert Yeah, it was a sign of the times for sure.
In other news, I'm almost done FF6! Got everybody, got a couple more dragons to kill, Doom Gaze to drop, and then it's on to Kefka!
Torchlight 2 has a really good skill system.
@badp They're the ones Strix suggested last month. meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/6957/…
16:53
@Wipqozn I can't say that I've played that one.
@fbueckert It's a good game. The skill system is really well done. There are no skill dependencies, so you never need to waste points just to unlock skills. You have the 3-tree system just like Diablo 2 had, and all but 3 skills on each tree are active skills, and the other 3 are passive bonuses. It gives you the variety in your skills like Diablo 3 had, but also the a skill tree to customize without limiting users to cookie cutter builds like Diablo 2 did.
It's not perfect, but is better than the skill system in Diablo 2 and Diablo 3.

Q: How to successfully EV train?

Shadow ZorgonI have a level one Bulbasaur, and I plan on EV training him to a Venasaur. If I wanted him to be a tank, how many wings would I need to get him to have best HP, S DEF, and DEF? I used wings because they are 1 EV point each. Also, if I use a Macho Brace, would I get 2 EV points per wing, or does ...

I would say that Diablo 3 still has a bit more variety in terms of the number of skills you'll be using at any one time, but Torchlight 2 still has you using more than Diablo 2 did.
I kinda liked Dungeon Siege's method; the more you use it, the more you level up in it.
That sounds nifty.
16:57
@Wipqozn unsure, D2 allowed you to bind 9 skills at once, and all the others were 2 clicks away
@Wipqozn Don't play DS3. It's absolute shit.
@kalina Except you never really used those other skills.
The mechanic was pretty cool; everybody could use all types.
@Wipqozn hence "unsure"
Because of the way the tree worked it was always better to just choose one or two skills and then do your entire build around that.
16:58
I only ever seem to remember using ice orb and teleport + the various shields
If you used Combat Magic, like Fireball, it would level up, get better, and allow you to use higher level Combat Magic spells.
Also, you could bind it, but I think all it did was make the binded skill your active skill. I could be wrong though.
So the UI wasn't great.
DS2 added in a perk system, I believe, so you would get even better at your chosen skills.
@Wipqozn in d2 you mean?
