Best way to ensure you know which piece goes where.

The hardest part is sanding all the fiddly little bits and whatnot, and you only need to do that once.

Just usually taking off the nubs where you cut off the parts from the tree/sprue/whatever you call it.

And even that, you want to take it easy so you don't deform the part.

@Frank I like to use 600 grit paper to sand off the nubs and then go over it with 1000 grit paper and finally buff it using a sanding sponge

@Krazer I went looking for 1000 grit sanding paper; couldn't find any.

I do have sanding sponges, though, but they're rougher than my sticks.

this way the scratches caused by the 600 grit are greatly diminished, and with a quick top coat, the piece will look as if it has been painted

@Frank I'm curious how you prep you runners for painting. I usually run them through dish soap to wash away the oils and leftover sanding dust... I've always wondered if there was an advantage to using a degreaser like purple power

@Frank I was told that when the runners are released from the molds over at the Bandai Factory, they're left with a molding agent on them that can prevent your paint from adhering correctly.... so for this reason, it's important to wash all your pieces before painting with some type of degreaser

@Krazer Primer can usually do that as well. That gives the paint something to grip to.

@Frank what do you use for painting? I used to borrow my friend's iwata hp-ch airbrush (I don't use it often enough to want to invest in one) ... the brush has a .3mm nozzle which is nice for everything from priming to detail work

@Krazer I just bought an airbrush and the assorted paints.

It's probably not a great airbrush, but it'll do the job until I get too picky.

when painting my frames I've found that it's best to use a few different colors of metallic paint to give each limb that appearance of being an actual piece of machinery
