@AshleyNunn I don't have an image response to this yet

@OrigamiRobot :(
If only I liked the new name:
@QAna Have you heard the new Frank Ocean track
user15026
@OrigamiRobot I'd play that >.>
@QAzer You're more proficient in Illustrator than I, as well.
03:04
@AshleyNunn Don't be sad
user15026
@OrigamiRobot YAY HUGS I LOVE HUGS
@Fluttershy Why? This sounds great.
@GnomeSlice Great? There's nothing "great" about using rape as a plot device.
user15026
@Fluttershy This.
@Fluttershy I'm given to understand it's not a rape scene.
Even if it were, rape is a theme used in countless movies and other games to set up the characters.
user15026
03:13
@GnomeSlice That doesn't make it okay.
@AshleyNunn I respectfully disagree. I'm not saying rape is okay (it isn't), but I don't see why it should be treated any different from numerous other disturbing, and dark themes that get explored for the sake of drama in certain media.
@GnomeSlice Their post there doesn't change the fact that the scene in question does come off as attempted rape. They can call it bunnies and butterflies if they want. But it is what it is.
@Fluttershy So? It's a dark game.

Q: Lycanthropy cure in Dawnguard DLC?

A.C.M.Bethesda has recently announced a massive DLC for Skyrim and I was wondering if anyone had heard if they were going to include a new way to cure lycanthropy. I ask this because I would like to be able to play as a vampire lord on my main character however my quests are bugged and I cannot cure my...

@GnomeSlice "We're not trying to be over the top, shock people for shock's sake." It can be a dark game without rape elements.
03:18
@Fluttershy Why is 'rape' more offensive than 'murder' or something else?
@GnomeSlice The problem is that they're using a moment like that as a marketing point to say "SEE, SEE? LOOK HOW DARK AND MATURE AND SERIOUS OUR GAME IS," which undermines it's dramatic and thematic value and makes them look stupid.
@GnomeSlice As to that question... that's a can of worms I am not prepared to open on the bridge.
@LessPop_MoreFizz That's what people are saying, yeah.
user2334
Sounds like using shock elements to perpetuate the fantasy of being the one to save the helpless girl
@MarkTrapp this too. The way the whole scenario plays into a classic male power fantasy is a little discomfiting.
The trailer looks awesome to me, and the theme gets put across just fine, I think.
03:19
@MarkTrapp But their argument is "she's not helpless. And this is why."
user2334
> "They're more like 'I want to protect her.' There's this sort of dynamic of 'I'm going to this adventure with her and trying to protect her.'"
user2334
White Knight Syndrome, the game
@MarkTrapp I think that was worded poorly. I think what they're trying to get across is a difference in roles for Lara. i.e. she isn't supposed to act, and feel like she's in charge, or has a plan for everything.
Sort of like that lady from Hydrophobia.
user15026
@MarkTrapp Yeaaaah.
user2334
@GnomeSlice Right, she's the helpless victim and you're the guy to save her. Can't have a strong female lead, can we?
03:23
@MarkTrapp ...Have you even played any of the other games in the series?
Don't tell me everyone is getting worked up about not having a 'strong female lead'.
@MarkTrapp They're saying this is the game that defines her as that strong female lead. Personally... I think they could've made her defining moment anything else.
Can't have a not 'strong female lead', can we?
user15026
@Fluttershy Pretty much.
@Fluttershy I think the defining moment is when she's forced to kill another person for the first time...
user15026
@GnomeSlice Because tehy tried to rape her, no?
user2334
03:24
@Fluttershy Indeed
@AshleyNunn Because they captured her and held her prisoner.
I dunno about you, but I'd kill someone who tried to rape me if I had to.
@GnomeSlice Watch the trailer again. She was forced to kill a person for the first time.... Because he tried to rape her.
What, you mean the guy that tried to touch her ass? Have you never seen a violent movie with a scary bad guy?
Couldn't just say... Kill him because he was trying to stab her or something. They used rape. Because they felt it was "edgy" and shocking enough for male gamers... Implying females don't play Tomb Raider...
Everyone is getting so worked up about it when much more graphic depictions of attempted sexual abuse appear in movies every day.
user15026
03:26
@GnomeSlice Those are bothersome too.
user2334
@GnomeSlice I played the original. Comparing it to the earlier Lara Croft games as if those are the only exemplars of female lead characters is asinine. If they really wanted to make her into more than walking boobs with guns, there's a rich canon of strong female lead characters to pull from. Making it so "oh, she's only bad ass cuz rape" is at best lamer than lame
@AshleyNunn Why? It's not like they're promoting rape.
In this case, the defining moment of the trailer is when she has to kill a person... as far as I'm concerned, they just needed a way to work in the 'fight or die' aspect to lead up to that.
@GnomeSlice Please. Please don't make me explain concepts like triggers and rape culture to you here. PLEASE.
@MarkTrapp I think the point of the game was to make her a 'not strong' female lead.
@GnomeSlice It is basically saying she can only become a hero if someone tried to rape her. Then end.
user15026
03:28
@GnomeSlice But they kinda are. echoes what Origami said
@OrigamiRobot I don't think the 'rape' scene was intended as an important thing. The murder scene was.
FAE
FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'd like to take this moment to say thank you to you for being a voice of reason here. I've got a lot of words on this but right now I'm way, way too upset about how the conversation in here is going to voice them.
user2334
@GnomeSlice @Fluttershy was saying that they are making her a strong female lead. If she's not supposed to be, that's what I read: you play her "assistant" (read: white knight) who protects her
They needed a reason powerful enough for her to will herself to kill. Nobody wants to be raped. That seems pretty powerful to me.
@MarkTrapp I didn't take that literally.
user15026
@FAE I am going to just say that if I could, I would upvote this, because this is how I feel as well.
03:29
@MarkTrapp You still play Lara. But it's an origin story. She's not yet evolved into that strong female character from the older games. But they're going about her evolution in the wrong manner.
You feel like you could help teh weak characters in movies, right?
@GnomeSlice There are a million other ways to do this.
@OrigamiRobot Sure there are. Doesn't make any particular ones less valid...
The scene in question was about... 3 seconds long.
If anything, the trope of the 'creepy bad guy trying to feel up the captive woman' is more 'ridiculous', at least to me.
@FAE No problem. I'm sorry to say that I mean it when I say I have no intention to elaborate, as I lack the patience to talk to a brick wall tonight.
for fuck's sake, how come whenever my opinion is different from anyone else's I'm suddenly a 'brick wall'?
03:32
But I figured the least I could do is throw out a few keywords for @GnomeSlice to google if he was feeling sufficiently inquisitive.
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I honestly do not blame you - it is useless to speak when the intended audience is closing their ears
Again... ears open.
@GnomeSlice It's like saying "Lara Croft is a strong female character, but she wasn't always like this. She never could have gotten where she is today without rape. It's no big deal. Rape is empowering."
FAE
FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz I understand, and deeply, deeply appreciate what words you have said.
I just don't think you're going to change my opinion, because this is how I view most media...
@OrigamiRobot ..That's not what it's saying at all. If anything it's 'Murder' is empowering.
Or 'Plane Crashes' are empowering. There are a million contributing factors shown in the trailer. If she hadn't landed on that island, she wouldn't be where she is today.
FAE
FAE
And I am going to leave now for the sake of my sanity. Have a good evening all.
@GnomeSlice The entire point is that the rape part is totally unnecessary and they are only doing it because it is a female character.
Zeroing in on the 3 second scene where she's groped by the bad guy and complaining about it as 'the defining moment' is just... silly.
@OrigamiRobot Source? It's a sad fact that rape generally targets women. That doesn't mean that every rape scene ever was done specifically because the character was female...
@FAE Night... Sorry tonight has been so bleh...
03:35
I would imagine if they wanted it to be a rape scene, it would have been longer than 3 seconds.
@GnomeSlice You are fundamentally missing the crux of the argument, which is that rape is uniquely offensive amongst the crimes that you've mentioned. The fact that you don't understand why that is the case does not exonerate you from having to deal with that reality.
It looked to me like a way to segue into 'she has to commit murder to survive'.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm sorry, but murder is pretty offensive.
The bad guy tried to cop a feel, she fought back, this made him so mad it quickly became 'kill or be killed'. She kills him.
I honestly don't see why people are making it out to be a 'rape scene', what do you think would happen in those circumstances?
@GnomeSlice It could've been "kill or be killed" just as easily with any other medium. They chose rape because they seem to think it is empowering.
Lets put the rape part aside. It's really just the final straw in this vastly sexist plot.
@GnomeSlice Murder victims don't have to cope with being reminded of exactly what happened to them constantly after the fact. Like I said, if you feel like googling and doing some research, 'triggers' and 'rape culture' are good phrases to start with, but I really don't have the energy to fully engage with you on this tonight.
03:38
@LessPop_MoreFizz I understand that, and it's unfortunate, but it's called 'mature' for a reason. It's not supposed to be pleasant all the time.
@GnomeSlice I play video games as a means to escape the harsh reality of the real world. I don't want have it thrown in my face because some developer has to be edgy.
@Fluttershy Isn't Diablo about Satan? That's pretty heavy stuff.
@GnomeSlice I used to do some typography work. Lets see how these fare.
Saints Row 3 is full of prostitution and murder.
@QAzer I like the horizontal ones more.
Have you guys ever seen any gory horror movies? Those are pretty offensive.
@Fluttershy And apparently "edgy" is nudging into areas people find offensive.
03:39
@GnomeSlice You have the biggest misunderstanding of maturity that I've ever seen.

@OrigamiRobot I wasn't talking about 'maturity' like that.
@GnomeSlice I was talking about whatever you were talking about.
Am I the only one who's thinking this is rehashing the same sort of process as the racism debate a few weeks ago?
I am so sick of people telling me that my opinion is wrong and that I'm a bad person for having that opinion. It seems perfectly plausible to me that in those circumstances, given the 'creepy bad guy' he might try to cop a feel which could lead to a fight to the death out of anger.
@fbueckert That wasn't really the same thing.
03:42
@GnomeSlice something still feels missing :/
@QAzer the r
@GnomeSlice It seems to be following the same process to me.
@GnomeSlice You consistently misunderstand what every single person is trying to tell you and you seemingly refuse to even make an attempt to.
@OrigamiRobot ...I beg your pardon?
user2334
@GnomeSlice You're not a bad person (or maybe you are, I don't know you that well), but you're definitely showing a hefty disregard for what other people are saying.
03:42
@MarkTrapp I could say the same about you guys...
I didn't say I disregard it, I'm just explaining how I see it.
user2334
I'm sorry, I don't really find much sympathy for the "rape is a good plot element" argument. We'll have to agree to disagree on that.
@GnomeSlice and we are explaining the part you dont see, but you ignore it
I didn't say 'rape is automatically a good plot element', you know.
@OrigamiRobot Because I don't see it that way. I'm not ignoring you, I'm just not changing my opinion yet.
Putting 'rape' or 'sexual abuse' in your plot doesn't necessaarily make it a good plot. Putting the theme in your plot doesn't necessarily make it a bad plot either.
@GnomeSlice You don't have to see it that way yourself in order to understand how other people see things.
@fbueckert You're right, it definitely is, which is why I have no desire to fully engage with Gnome on the subject. He can take what I've offered, do some homework, and ask some questions if he wants, or he can continue to live in ignorance. It's not worth my energy to convince him that he's not opening his eyes if he has no desire to.
03:45
@OrigamiRobot ...Who said I don't understand?
Just because I don't agree with you doesn't mean I don't understand.
I don't always say things the right way, I've not been intending to come off as such.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm not taking part, one way or the other. I'm just observing that it has a parallel.
@GnomeSlice You clearly don't, because your language continually and completely fails to engage with the arguments being made to you. Instead you keep falling back on trying to draw parallels that aren't really appropriate.
@GnomeSlice The fact that you are repeatedly ignoring the points people are making. Please take @LessPopMoreFizz's advice and read up on the subject.
Whatever, I'm done trying to defend why I see something differently than you guys without sounding like an asshole.
@GnomeSlice You consistently misunderstand what every single person is trying to tell you and you seemingly refuse to even make an attempt to.

I don't agree with your opinions.
@OrigamiRobot I don't see how that supports that.
@GnomeSlice You dont have to agree to understand
@OrigamiRobot Who said I don't understand?
user2334
You know what the sad part is? Lara Croft doesn't need a backstory, she already has a non-rape one for why she's bad ass:

user2334
03:47
> A plane crash left the character stranded in the Himalayas for two weeks; the experience spurred her to shun her former life and seek other adventures around the world. Croft wrote books and other published works based on her exploits as a mercenary, big-game hunter, and master thief.[5][6]
user2334
> The story was later changed to include her mother in the plane crash. While searching for shelter against the elements, Lara Croft witnesses her mother vanish after tampering with an ancient sword. Her father disappears in search of his wife.

@GnomeSlice The fact that you are repeatedly ignoring the points people are making. Please take @LessPopMoreFizz's advice and read up on the subject.
@MarkTrapp That's the same story. It's like a synopsis. It just doesn't mention the fact that she had to commit murder, because they probably hadn't thought it up yet.
@OrigamiRobot Ignoring? ...Source?
3 mins ago, by LessPop_MoreFizz
@GnomeSlice You clearly don't, because your language continually and completely fails to engage with the arguments being made to you. Instead you keep falling back on trying to draw parallels that aren't really appropriate.
I can keep this up all day. I am a robot
@GnomeSlice Sure, it's the same story. But... That is backstory enough without having to add "Oh, by the way, she was almost raped."
03:49
@OrigamiRobot Just because I don't speak in such a way that makes you think I give a shit about what you're saying doesn't mean I don't.
user2334
@GnomeSlice Really, you don't think two weeks stranded in the Himalayas, losing her mother, and having her father run off isn't enough to harden her? She needs to be raped, too?
@Fluttershy Because it's not an important part of the story. It's a 3 second scene to get from captured to murder.
user15026
@GnomeSlice but why does it have to be rape that gets her there?
For the record, I don't even know what 'drwaing parallels' means.
23 mins ago, by LessPop_MoreFizz
@GnomeSlice Please. Please don't make me explain concepts like triggers and rape culture to you here. PLEASE.
03:51
@GnomeSlice Again, a 3 second scene that could have been anything fucking else.
@AshleyNunn I'm not even sure I'd call it rape, but it seems extremely plausible to me. SThe evil bad guy could get the idea at any moment, and rape is historically motivated/acted upon by anger. He seemed like a very angry dude in the trailer. I assume it was because it was plausible.
@Fluttershy Okay, sure. Like... they could have murdered her friend.
OMG MURDER IN THE TRAILER
@LessPop_MoreFizz I've been reading, man.

@GnomeSlice Please. Please don't make me explain concepts like triggers and rape culture to you here. PLEASE.
This conversation reminds me, I do need to do my monthly sweep of (mostly LoL) answers to remove the annoying misuse of the word 'rape' to refer to defeat of ones opponent.
@LessPop_MoreFizz ...We still get that?
user15026
@GnomeSlice Murder victims do not have to live with constant references to what happened to them assaulting their senses every.damn.day.
03:53
@AshleyNunn Their families do...
@LessPop_MoreFizz Does that... actually happen?
@GnomeSlice rather often.
@YiJiang Yes. For instance, I just edited this answer.

A: What is the best strategy for Samurai vs Zombie Defense to protect my Sacred Gate?

SabideeI say the best way is to farm coins at the designated lvls (or any that gives good amount of coins when u lose or quit). Just quit right before winning (90% if u want to be safe). Maxing farmins asap helps quite a bit as you can spam them once u reach lvl 3 leadership in battles. Keep in mind air...

@LessPop_MoreFizz Can't we ask for a filter feature or something?
(Yes, I know it's still incoherent, I don't have the mental energy to fix it right now, but I wanted to at least fix the offensive language).
@LessPop_MoreFizz ._.
03:54
@LessPop_MoreFizz That entire answer needs some serious editing
Dammit... My flag was marked Helpful. =( I got my 1 rep back...
@Fluttershy This isn't going to be helpful, I know, but just for kicks, what other 3 second scenarios could have led from capture to lethal combat?
@YiJiang To be honest, the whole question is just a cavalcade of incoherent answers
Yeah, I noticed. Ugh.
I mean if you look at the context of the trailer, she's just nearly escaped, which would have been sure to piss off her captor...
@LessPop_MoreFizz I can't understand a thing in this.
user15026
03:56
@GnomeSlice So what, he has the right to try to rape her?
3
Q: How do you breed a Dodo dragon?

EBongoWhat dragon combinations can I used to breed this dragon? Which dragons should I breed and how will I know whether I got one? How long are they available?

Try some of those
@AshleyNunn He's an evil criminal guy... since when do they follow rights?
user15026
@GnomeSlice He is a MADE UP CONSTRUCT
@AshleyNunn So is the sexual assault.
You don't think there are people like that in the world?
user15026
@GnomeSlice Oh, let's just say I am intimately familiar with the fact that there are people like that in the world.
03:57
@OrigamiRobot My knight in shining gameboy case...
@GnomeSlice Please do not pursue this argument any further.
You have already driven several people away from the chat.
If he had just hit her or something, because he was angry, I don't see why that would provoke her into attacking him back, judging from her character description in the game. The unwanted physical contact seems like a a very believable way to make her fight back, to me.
And many others are getting very emotional.
@QAna That's my problem?
@QAna YOU'RE GODDAMN RIGHT.
@GnomeSlice so drop it.
you can do research on the subject
user15026
03:59
@GnomeSlice Just....stop. Please. Just stop.
Oh @Mana, not you too
I AM NOT A BAD PERSON GODAMMIT
@GnomeSlice Homework assignment. Go research the word 'trigger'. THen go back and read @AshleyNunn's last statement. Then reassess your commitment to having this argument here, now.
Every time I express an opinion, I feel like one from the reaction.
user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz I took a stab at it
user15026
04:00
@LessPop_MoreFizz This. Oh, this.
@GnomeSlice you are not a bad person, but right now you are seriously hurting people.
if you are committed to not being a bad person, you are going to drop it,
@GnomeSlice If it makes googling easier, you may wish to search for the word rape in conjunction with trigger, or perhaps for the phrase 'trigger warning'.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I told you, I've been reading about it since you first linked it.
@MarkTrapp Uncrappified some of the other answers
@GnomeSlice Then perhaps you should do a little critical reading of the last few dozen lines of chat, draw some inferences, and think very hard about continuing this conversation.
user15026
04:01
@LessPop_MoreFizz This.
user15026
I am trying not to be blunt as fuck about it, but this conversation is not a fun place.
I just wanted to talk about the game... I didn't want a conversation about rape.
@GnomeSlice The two subjects are fundamentally inseparable at the moment. WHICH IS THE WHOLE PROBLEM THAT YOU COULDN'T COMPREHEND IN THE FIRST PLACE.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Well, they bloody well are now.
I think the game looks like a really nice prequel to the series, and seems much more cinematic. Which is a good thing.
@GnomeSlice They bloody well were the minute that trailer hit with no context, no other gameplay to talk about, nothing else except for that trailer.
user15026
04:05
@LessPop_MoreFizz This. They sensationalized it.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I wouldn't have even 'noticed' the 'scene' if someone hadn't brought it up...
I got to the murder and I was still waiting for the so called scene'. Which was after it. Just... I don't explain myself very well okay?
The problem is that all there is to talk about re: that game is the trailer.
I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feelings.
@LessPop_MoreFizz That game is not about rape...
@GnomeSlice No, the game probably isn't. But right now, the game isn't finished. There's no demo or gameplay videos out there, all that's been released to the public is a short trailer.
This is the problem, I didn't get RAPE from the trailer, and everyone else did, so when I talk about it, I feel like I'm just talking about the game...
04:06
Which prominently implies an element of rape. Which is a big problem.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I dunno if I'd say prominently but that discussion will go nowhere, and I don't intend to pursue it.
@GnomeSlice Right. the point is that you have no sensitivity to the subject. So when you go blabbering on and don't listen to people who are trying to get you to develop some, you come off as a willfully naive misanthrope, which is not a fair characterization of you, but it's the persona you seem to retreat into when these subjects come up.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I was just talking about a game. =[ There's all kinds of offensive shit in the media these days.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Also, give me a sec to look up 'misanthrope'.
@GnomeSlice Please. Don't make me double back and explain again why rape is a special sort of offensive that deserves extra double calling out. Please don't. I thought we had finally gotten clear of that one.
@LessPop_MoreFizz I get it, I get it.
I look at the entire world objectively, and sometimes I forget that not everyone does.
user15026
04:10
@GnomeSlice Some of us can't.
I think most of my point was that the devs were trying to come up with the most terrible thing they could think of to act as a trauma in Lara's life... I didn't explain it correctly.
Anyway, sorry BriQAde..
...I go away for a few minutes and the conversation gets all serious. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Fluttershy has every right as a consumer to boycott a game or not based on their personal views. Everyone can interpret the game, the narrative, the telling, etc. on their own terms and come to their own decisions.
Why fight about it? Gnome has one opinion and others might have ones that differ. Just because someone has a different opinion on a subject isn't a reason to get upset.
SO. How about that logo?
@skovacs1 Ask @QAzer.
@GnomeSlice Wasn't there talk of addressing the negative space created by the 'r'?

@LessPop_MoreFizz It has context to me. The last thing I saw prior to where I jumped back in was discussion of the logo
Speaking of context: Context-free patent art.
@skovacs1 It has context to me too, but it's a totally different context. Which is what I find hilarious.
@skovacs1 Yeah, dunno what he's doing with that.

@BrQAnt That is fantastic
@LessPop_MoreFizz You have levelled up to General Pop! Congratulations!

Not intending to start another argument, but because the discussion was sidetracked before I could finish what I was saying:
This business about 'rooting for her in a way you might not root for a male character' has everyone all uptight about sexism. But the genders are fundamentally different, in many ways, so maybe it's just me, but I don't see any sexism. Is all.

Flogging a dead horse (alternatively beating a dead horse in some parts of the Anglophone world) is an idiom that means a particular request or line of conversation is already foreclosed or otherwise resolved, and any attempt to continue it is futile; or that to continue in any endeavour (physical, mental, etc.) is a waste of time as the outcome is already decided. The first recorded use of the expression with its modern meaning is by British politician and orator John Bright, referring to the Reform Act of 1867, which called for more democratic representation in Parliament, an issue abou...

@skovacs1 I didn't say it was good, and I voted to close it. It's a bad question. Just wondering.

@YiJiang Whoever does it can basically write their contract with a sponsor to stream shit.

@QAzer I think I like the nested one the most, actually.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Why would you want to stream shit? Wouldn't you want it to be more regular? :P
@skovacs1 ...Ew.
@LessPop_MoreFizz ...What? Is that like, official?
Because as I said before, I'm sure there're tons of people playing the game who couldn't care less about what the online community is doing.
@GnomeSlice I would argue that the odds of someone who isn't in any way plugged in to the community surrounding the game accomplishing a world first like this is roughly comparable to the odds of the Somalian space program landing the next man on the moon.
@LessPop_MoreFizz ...Why? Just because someone doesn't care about talking to everyone else playing the game doesn't mean they're no good at it.
I know Diablo 3 is a big deal, but is it really that big a deal?

@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm just saying it's possible. Is there an in-game stat for seeing who's beaten what?
@YiJiang Yes.
@GnomeSlice The amount of duplication of effort that would be required to do the required theory craft, combined with the peculiar restraints of hardcore mode (permadeath, followed by a very long grind before you can try again) means that it is exceedingly unlikely.
@LessPop_MoreFizz The... the what?
Realistically, the only people making serious, regular attempts at hardcore inferno diablo are basically playing the game as a full time job, making money from streaming revenue etc.
@GnomeSlice the theorycraft required to reverse engineer and understand the various game mechanics required to appropriately select gear and skills.
@LessPop_MoreFizz theory...craft?
Is that like recipies in Minecraft.
@GnomeSlice You are, once again, making it very clear that you have absolutely no clue what you are talking about, but are more than content to speculate anyway. Which, while occasionally an endearing trait, is increasingly tiresome of late.
