@badp Steam finally took the hint and removed the Rayman Origins demo from my Steam library. I own the game for xbox 360.
If you like platformers at all, check it out.

Q: LA Noire Launcher DirectX not found problem (Windows XP)

Mark HarvistonI keep getting the "The Launcher cannot query DirectX. Please update DirectX by installing the latest redistributable" I'm on Windows XP and this is the Steam version of the game. @LessPop_MoreFizz I'm not sure I get the actual joke, but I still found that amusing.

@GnomeSlice The joke is valve time.

When everything else comes to an end, Valve still hasn't finished HL3

Ah, I see now. I guess the thing about flying cars threw me off the 'end of infinity' thing.

Q: Can I safely complete all assignments after the final mission?

FallenAngelEyesI'm currently working on my second playthrough of Mass Effect 2. In the first, I skipped the N7 and DLC assignments because I wanted to save them for my completionist playthrough (this one). I'm currently planning on doing them after I finish the final mission, however, I want to make sure that I...

Q: What are the exact mechanics for Bane's nightmare skill?

yx.Bane's nightmare skill can work on both allies and enemies, and is transferred when the sleeping target is attacked, but what are the conditions for doing so? Does the attack have to be a targeted attack, or can any aoe effect cause the transfer (such as ancient apparition's ult)? Also, is it p...

HAH, 8 QUESTIONS.
@StrixVaria By the way, there's one actually "useful" reason for asking that question about breast physics.
Knowing which outfits disable the effect can make it easier to create custom outfits that don't exhibit strange behaviour when applied to the character's animation.

Only $4 shipping? What a great deal!

@TimStone buy.com. Seems legit.

@GnomeSlice why not?

@badp Yeah, I dunno. Did you actually visit the link though.

1:42 PM
All .com english word domains are taken, that means somebody has to own buy.com or eat.com or pay.com
@GnomeSlice yes

@badp Seriously?

@badp I s'pose.

I mean, all?

@YiJiang That happened in like 1998?

@YiJiang Oh yes.
Single words, anyway.

1:43 PM
@YiJiang okay, just .com, corrected

@badp I'm still not entirely sure I actually believe that, to be honest.

@GnomeSlice it can be easily tested in bash with abundant use of dig or whatnot

@badp I'm not sure what either of those terms refer to.

Even xylophone.com is a parked domain, apparently.

Morning @JuanManuel.

1:50 PM
And now I should probably get to work.

@GnomeSlice Bash is the default Unix shell, in this case it means its scripting language. Dig is a Unix command to look up domain records.

@TimStone Oh come on, that's an easy one.

Mornin'

@ArdaXi Okay... now I just don't understand 'shell'.

@GnomeSlice Command-line. It's what cmd.exe is on Windows.
The white-on-black text command interpreter.

1:51 PM
what's the markup to put a quote block in a comment?

@Sterno I don't think there is any.

tzenes does it in a comment here

That's a code block

I'll take it! How do I do that one?

Backticks

1:54 PM
@Sterno `Message here.`

The ~/` key

What's the markup for that? I don't know how to do it in comments, questions, or chat...

Awesome, thanks

On chat or posts, but not comments, indenting with four spaces works too.

@ArdaXi Multiline?

1:55 PM
But not in comments

@GnomeSlice Not necessarily.
@YiJiang I added that in right before your message.

@ArdaXi I mean, does that support multiline text.

@GnomeSlice Oh, yeah. If you paste multiple lines in chat, it'll automatically give you the fixed font option.
main( ) {
  printf("Hello world");
}

main( ) {
printf("Hello world");
}
??

or you could just use back ticks

1:57 PM
Oh, you mean you don't have to do it with the 4 spaces.
I never noticed that button before...
`main( ) {
printf("Hello world");
}`
@TylerShads Not for multi-line stuff, apparently.

when you make your first new line
shift + enter
you will see a new button that says
fixed font

@TylerShads Neato.

main()
{
printf("Hello world");
}

@GnomeSlice You do, for multi-line, but it works for single lines as well.

Q: Is There Any Way to Minimize the Effects of 'Jiggle Physics' (female) in the Creation Mode?

GnomeSliceI just spent upwards of 20 minutes trying to place a flower on Leixia's shoulder in a custom costume. The problem I ran into (and never really got around), is that Leixia's breast jiggle during her fighting stance doesn't appear to affect only her breasts: the character mesh of her neck and shou...

1:58 PM
But it doesn't work mid-sentence like back-ticks do.

@ArdaXi No you don't, I get the button showing up with or without the spaces.

@GnomeSlice The button is what adds the spaces.

Fixation is a concept originated by Sigmund Freud (1905a) to denote the persistence of anachronistic sexual traits'. Subsequently '"Fixation" acquired a broader connotation. With the development of theory of libidinal stages...the term came to mean a persistent attachment, not only to the specific instinctual aims of a particular era, but, instead, to the entire complex of self and object relation' at that time. More generally, it is the state in which an individual becomes obsessed with an attachment to another person, being or object (in human psychology): 'A strong attachment to a per...

@ArdaXi Oh, it adds it to every line?

@GnomeSlice Yeah.

2:00 PM
main( ) {
  printf("Hello world");
}
Ah, I see.

@JuanManuel Zing.

@JuanManuel Hey, that one is actually "useful", okay.
=[
I gave up on that flower on my custom costume. :/

@GnomeSlice How is minimizing female jiggle physics useful? [/male-stereotype]

@ArdaXi Read the question.

@GnomeSlice Whoosh?

2:02 PM
I explained why it was actually a problem I was facing.
@ArdaXi Pardon?

Who downvoted that... and why...
Do people not read things before they vote any more? =[

@GnomeSlice Any more?
I think that's been a problem ever since the mere idea of voting was thought up.

Well, people just say Hey, Gnomeslice posted another question involving body physics, better downvote it.

-body +boobs -gnomeslice

2:06 PM
@badp This must be some kind of reference I'm not getting. Is that syntax for something?

Hex
@GnomeSlice Sadly, some people will look past the entire essence of your post, see the word "breast" and downvote with some twisted interpretation of sexism in mind.

@Hex My point exactly.

@GnomeSlice No, your point was that the word was "GnomeSlice," not "breast."

I can't believe ktash is up to +25 upvotes for his breast physics answer. This site saddens me sometimes.

@GraceNote Hexxus?

2:24 PM
@Sterno In defense, the answer isn't bad in terms of the question it is attached to, so it's not really easy to downvote it when its only flaw can be said to be the question.

@GnomeSlice Do you actually expect that there's answer to your latest question other than "No"?
@GraceNote I know. I haven't downvoted it either, since it's correct. It's just... REALLY upvoted given how little content is there.

@Lazers Oh my, another questions revolving around breats.

Gaming.SE is making me hate boobs. That's not cool!

Although upon reading the question it would appear the title just needs improvement.
@GnomeSlice
> Is there any way to minimize the effects of character warping in when creating custom costumes, short of equipping 'solid armor' to the character as outlined here?
for this phrase...
> character warping in when creating custom
Do you intend for that in to be there?
Because it looks like a typo to be me, but before I edit it out I want to make sure.
since I could just be completely misunderstanding what you mean.

@OrigamiRobot Excuse me?
Are you suggesting I'm not cool?

2:31 PM
@fredley I think you're cool.

@fredley You look a little cooked if you ask me.

@Wipqozn ...awaits qualifying followup...

@Sterno Why?

@GraceNote I feel like a porkchop

@Mana Probably asserting that the amount of effort (and usefulness resultant) is not proportional to the amount of reward present. It's half luck sometimes, one might say.

2:34 PM
@Jin It's been a week, where are my LAZERS?

@mana What Grace said.

I have one sentence answers that contain enough of a useful facet as to earn lots more upvotes than some of my longer and more in-depth answers. In my case, though, it's because no one plays Resonance of Fate - the lack of voting is justified because it isn't useful to as many people as that one sentence.

A: Why don't Terrans ever seem to use medics?

ManaMedics are not usable units in the multiplayer component of Starcraft 2, along with many other units that exist in campaign but not in multiplayer. Here are the campaign-only units for all races: Terran Zerg Protoss

Yeah, I remember having a similar problem with this answer being my most upvoted thing.

@GraceNote though in this particular case, it's not just that it's short. Short can be okay. It's that I doubt it actually helped 25 people

@Mana Well, my most upvoted is... well everyone knows that. It actually took me a long time looking through my highest upvoted answers to actually find one that wasn't at least 2 paragraphs.

2:36 PM
People just see the words "jiggle physics" and smack the upvote button.

@Mana You think you have problems? My most upvoted answer is about Hello Kitty.

@ArdaXi You edited that one to bump to get more votes!

Oh, the Steam one has overtaken that one on account of that witty one-liner at the end.
> Anyway, the choice to use Steam has already been made by Square Enix. If you don't trust them, why are you installing the game itself?
Bam, 60 upvotes.

@fredley No, you are plenty cool. I am suggesting you could be even cooler.

@GraceNote I disavow all responsibility. My actions were merely intended for the betterment of the information derived from such.

2:38 PM
@ArdaXi Don't make me bust out the chat logs

Hex
@Sterno It kinda works the same way with downvotes for it, I think it ends up getting more votes of both types than it may deserve, because of the "controversial" term(s) used.

@GraceNote Lies and fabrications!
Hrm, looking at it, most of my top answers are only such because of some humour or wit element contained in it.

My top question was for playing up the title with "Is atheism a bad choice?" It was a real question about the game, but with a purposely tweaked up title

2:42 PM
I'm pretty satisfied with the amount of work/knowledge for my top answers with the exception of one about Diablo 2 set items stacking

I think it mainly bothers me if I think something is getting posted specifically for the joke/shock quality, rather than because it's a real issue.

@ArdaXi Curse your choice of diction! You avoid mentioning the act directly while within proximity of performing the act, making you appear innocent!

I'm happy with my top answer, which is the KOA skill point one. Which involved a lot of work. Jiggle physics is about to overtake it though. :P

@OrigamiRobot Like, how much cooler?

@GraceNote This shows why choice of diction is always of the utmost importance in maintaining innocence in even the most dire of situations.

2:44 PM
@ArdaXi Actually then I just looked at the previous day where you just say it out loud.

@JuanManuel I'm still just surprised that this article is getting upvotes on there despite how clearly and utterly flawed it is.
It makes me worry about some of the other stuff that I know less about that gets upvoted there.

@fredley Like as cool as @StrixVaria and I. @Wipqozn could be cool too, but he refuses.

@OrigamiRobot How does me being a Pig fit into all this?

@Mana doesn't it work like reddit? Where votes merely mean that it's "interesting to read"?
I don't use HN

@fredley See @Strix's avatar

2:45 PM
@GraceNote Besides, I'm not the only one who openly admits to gaming the system.
Jan 9 '11 at 22:44, by Grace Note
I've been stealthily subtracting or adding whitespace to questions as I retag them. Usually, removing the extra linebreak added when using the button to add hyperlinks or images.
J'accuse!

@fredley WE LOVEDED YOU PIGGY! WE LOVEDED YOOOOUUUUU!

@JuanManuel That can be one interpretation; however, also like on Reddit, there are multiple reasons for why people upvote things.

@OrigamiRobot You're scaring me

@ArdaXi In my defense, I clearly must be speaking falsehoods. If I were stealthily doing it, why would I mention it so blatantly?
Granted, subtracting the "stealthily" from the sentence is enough to still function...

@GraceNote so you can deny it now obviously

2:47 PM
@GraceNote So we don't suspect you.

@GraceNote I...see?

@GraceNote You used the present perfect continuous however, implying you were doing it up until that point, but not necessarily later.

@fredley He'd riding a pig.

Obviously, the 'stealthily' fails after admittance of the fact, but prior to such, it was in fact stealthy, as evidenced by the fact you had to point it out before it became known.

I'm assuming you haven't watched Invader Zim @fredley?

2:48 PM
@ArdaXi Which means that the act itself was indeed stealthy, meaning it was never detected, and thus never came to pass as far as we can conclude.

@GraceNote Up until the point of confession, yes.

@ArdaXi Point to Arda.

@fredley IT'S A PIG.

@GraceNote I think I kinda admitted to it too, here.

@JuanManuel I would say no. Saying "I have a copyright" doesn't give you a copyright.

@ArdaXi That's just me catching you. I was personally looking at the more blatant admission.

I have a copyright on this sentence.

@Wipqozn that's what I thought, but I wanted to confirm
23 secs ago, by Wipqozn
I have a copyright on this sentence.
Ja!

2:56 PM
@Wipqozn Err, ever heard of Schengen?

@JuanManuel Wow. That dude really doesn't want people copying his FAQ

@Wipqozn No...
@StrixVaria Yes. Yes it is.

@ArdaXi Nope. Teach me o great one.

@Wipqozn Comma fail

Well, basically, the moment you create something, you automatically own copyright on it in every country in the Schengen zone.

2:57 PM
I have a copyright on everything @ArdaXi says.

@JuanManuel I'm in trouble. One of my KOA answers copied his FF13-2 FAQ, but then I changed some characters, as he expressly forbid anyone from doing.
Oh man, that last sentence is in trouble too!

@JuanManuel In this particular case, it probably falls under fair use, which overrules any licence the copyright owner decides to put on the work.
Besides, I'm not sure whether a legal document is still valid if it contains falsehoods. "Breaking any of these rules is in direct violation of copyright law." is simply not true, because of Fair Use.

@Wipqozn In the US, whenever you come up with an original work, you automatically have a copyright.

@OrigamiRobot Not just the US.
Wait.
It's not Schengen, it's Berne's.

@ArdaXi I said "In the US" because I wasn't sure about other places.

3:01 PM
The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, usually known as the Berne Convention, is an international agreement governing copyright, which was first accepted in Bern, Switzerland in 1886. Content The Berne Convention requires its signatories to recognize the copyright of works of authors from other signatory countries (known as members of the Berne Union) in the same way as it recognizes the copyright of its own nationals. For example, French copyright law applies to anything published or performed in France, regardless of where it was originally created....
Ah, one-boxing does not work with https links.

@ArdaXi Schengen is border-control related

@fredley Yeah, I corrected myself.

@ArdaXi wat

@badp That's the entire area in which you automatically get copyright once you come up with something original.

I don't think that's how it works. At least in Italy I don't think you get automatic copyright

3:03 PM
@ArdaXi What if you're on a boat?

our national copyright monopolist thingadongdong, SIAE, is something I can't grok for the life of me
It's like you have to send them your stuff by snailmail, or send it to yourself or whatnot
I have no idea really

@badp Have you guys managed to arrest Berlusconi yet?

@badp Luckily, Berne's supersedes it.

@ArdaXi According to who? Italy?

Well this is troublesome. On one hand, I'm really cold and need to start a fire. On the other hand, I'm really lazy.

3:05 PM
@fredley Err, the fact that they signed it?

@fredley Nope, he shortened terms for trial prescription and then used it to dodge judgement

@Wipqozn Just start one where you are, no need to get up

> Copyright under the Berne Convention must be automatic; it is prohibited to require formal registration.

he's innocent because the trial expired basically

@badp Bad luck.

3:06 PM
@badp It's still a good idea to do this. Even though copyright is automatic, you still need to be able to defend it

user15026
@Tristan I missed you earlier, but I gotta say I am a big fan of your location in your Gaming.SE profile :)

@badp That makes perfect sense

@OrigamiRobot The easiest way to do that is use a service like myows.com
Although for code for example, something like a GitHub repository should suffice.

@ArdaXi Unless you are paranoid :P

I mean in terms of having a case.

3:08 PM
@OrigamiRobot One can never be too paranoid

@fredley I only trust uncooked pigs.

@OrigamiRobot I see you like to live dangerously

@fredley in my tabletop gaming group (which @OrigamiRobot is a part of), we joke that the GURPS disadvantage "Paranoid" (your character has to act very paranoid) is an advantage on account of how many times our paranoia has paid off

Robots do not fear danger. Magnets, yes. Danger, no.

......I hate when people sing along with music only they can hear (because they have headphones on). It is almost more annoying than people humming.

@AshleyNunn Whistling?
I enjoy whistling a tune I know someone hates. If you do it quietly they won't notice, but it will get it stuck in their head and they'll wonder where it came from.

user15026
@fredley How do I feel about it? It's not as bad as singing actual words, but worse than humming XD

@AshleyNunn It can be very piercing if done correctly
Anyway, it is cake of the clock. Bye...

so... I was playing civ5 the other day, and was puttering around going all butter and no guns... and Gandhi declared war on me. Didn't see that coming.

@Wipqozn Fixed, thanks.

@DavidB you should've, Ghandi hates butter

3:39 PM
Seriously though, why did that get two downvotes?

@GnomeSlice The title.

@Wipqozn What else would you call it.

@GnomeSlice "Is there any way to minimize the effects of character warping when creating custom costumes?"
would probably get less down votes.

It's the same question.

@IanPugsley so, Ghandi would be happier with guns?

3:41 PM
@GnomeSlice Yes, but it doesn't mention breasts.
Well, your other one doesn't, but it alludes to it.

@GnomeSlice It being the same question means that you wouldn't be losing anything for the edit, no?

@Wipqozn It's directly related to them. They are a part of life, and the game, why does everyone flip out whenever they're mentioned...

@GnomeSlice to be fair, you've seen a lot of positive attention from both

@GraceNote 'jiggle physics' is more readily identifiable...

3:43 PM
@GnomeSlice omg, it's Gandhi Norris

@GnomeSlice Aye, but the main focus of even the problem you were looking at was in the shoulder area.

@GraceNote I suppose...
I shall edit.
Now that I think about it, I don't even have proof that it's directly related to her tits animating, it might just be a body mesh thing.

@GnomeSlice I was about to say, this sounds more like an issue with the bones and such than with a specific part of said bones

@IanPugsley Well, I'm not entirely sure, according to the internet, applying Leixia's style to a male causes "odd nipple stretching".

@GnomeSlice ...interesting

3:48 PM
Given how floppy Leixia is, considering her bust size, I 'm guessing it's at least partly related to her tits.
Because there's no way that could work without some whack body stretching.
