Its been a while since I read Tesla's books but its the higher voltages that make it safer as the electrons are oscillating so much faster they 'barely' move.
A high voltage won't kill you by itself, you need current to be killed.

Q: Help with Mupen64 latest on Ubuntu 12.04, also wanting to be able to use gamepad with it

UikriAlright, I can't figure out how to install Mupen64 on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm gonna be moving in ~2 days with no internet connection for an indefinite amount of time, so that's why I'm asking for answers here instead of figuring it out myself (I don't have time right now to sit and fiddle with figuring...

@GnomeSlice But in identical material, higher voltage means higher current.
No it doesn't high voltage means low current, assuming energy is constant.
20:16
@RonanForman but if you apply a higher voltage to the same material, you get a higher current
@RonanForman V=IR
With equal resistance, higher voltage means higher current.
@OrigamiRobot Maybe they're using sand or something as a conductor.
@RonanForman The important thing here is that voltage, not energy, is what you choose when creating a current
@GnomeSlice yes, they are probably using a highly resistive material
20:28
@OrigamiRobot I never understood how the "high voltage isn't dangerous" argument works, since resistance is usually static, so higher voltage means higher current.
@GnomeSlice Oh, this is that David Blaine thing? Yea that electricity wont be going through his body
@StrixVaria I know firsthand that high voltage + body = bad.
@OrigamiRobot At least, not through his heart.
@GnomeSlice Through none of it. He is wearing a Faraday cage.
@OrigamiRobot That's so weird.
20:30
@OrigamiRobot Oh, wtf, that defeats the entire point...
Wait, he's 'wearing' one?
@GnomeSlice No, the relevant point is the enormous electrical field he will be in.
@OrigamiRobot Did you ever mention being an electrical engineer or something like that?
@StrixVaria I believe so.
@OrigamiRobot Yeah, but it's not a first then.
@GnomeSlice What is not a first?
@GnomeSlice That metal suit he is wearing in the picture.
20:37
@OrigamiRobot Weird, I've never seen wearable ones.
@OrigamiRobot People have done the faraday cage thing before.
@GnomeSlice probably because that's the sane way of doing something like this
@GnomeSlice Yes, the voltage is not impressive, but no one has ever been in such a strong electrical field for that long.
@OrigamiRobot Ah, okay, that's where the 'stunt' is then.
@GnomeSlice Yes. He is not being shocked, but it is still crazy.
People have made pocket faraday cages for stopping phones from getting reception in them.
20:41
@OrigamiRobot He's being irradiated.
Wait, no, that's not right...
@LessPop_MoreFizz Holy shit, new Replacements!
@GnomeSlice he's just having a constant static electric field applied to him (as I understand)
@murgatroid99 Yes. For 3 days.
And there will be arcs and it will be impressive looking.
@OrigamiRobot oh, wow. Maybe we'll learn something about how the human body reacts to exposure to electric fields
@murgatroid99 Yea I was thoroughly unimpressed when hearing about this until I learned it was 3 days.
20:46
@Mana YESSSSSSS
also, NEW GY!BE
@LessPop So, have you heard of this band called Alt-J?
@Mana heard the name but haven't checked out
there has been so much good stuff lately
i.e. the new Titus Andronicus
@LessPop_MoreFizz My brother recommended their new album to me and I've been enjoying that one a lot.
Vocals took me a while to get used to but it's goooooood.
so I've been caught between that, Grizzly Bear and Godspeed!
@Mana the new godspeed is so damned good
Did someone say 'Grizzly Bear'?
20:56
@GnomeSlice I am not sure what this shitty dubstep thing has to do with Ed Droste & Co.
@LessPop_MoreFizz It's not shitty. And someone said Grizzly Bear.
So I thought of that.
@GnomeSlice What does that have to do with Grizzly Bear
that is about as far from what Grizzly Bear sounds like as you can get
@LessPop_MoreFizz Look more closesly at the thumbnail.
@Mana Alt-J doesn't do anything in Chrome
I am disappointed
20:58
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm not sure how this refutes the fact that there is a bear in the thumbnail.
@GnomeSlice This is the Grizzly Bear being discussed.
user15026
@fbueckert At long last, I am going to have poutine tonight. Smoke's Poutinerie (I know you don't like it but my curiosity is getting the better of me).
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'm aware.
@AshleyNunn Poutine is fucking disgusting.

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Shut your face, it is delicious.

21:00
@AshleyNunn It's pretty gross. I haven't had it in a while. It probably tastes okay but... eurgh.
user15026
@GnomeSlice You shut your face tooooo it is so gooooooood
@AshleyNunn is correct. Poutine is delicious.
@LessPop_MoreFizz @Mana By the way, you guys might like some of the stuff they put in the Tiny and Big Soundtrack.
user15026
@Wipqozn See, this is why I like you.
@AshleyNunn I am pretty awesome.
user15026
21:03
@Wipqozn No arguments here XD
@LessPop_MoreFizz wahhh these look amazing
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Holy crap I want to make those rightnow
@LessPop_MoreFizz UPLO?
21:07
@GnomeSlice Article defines the term
user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz I dunno man, that looks gross. Pizza is pizza due to a precise, scientifically-determined cheese-to-sauce-to-bread ratio. That bread quotient is off the charts
Derp.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yeah, just noticed, I thought it was a brand or something.
@MarkTrapp Well yes, it is definitely not pizza, and is instead a UPLO.
But UPLO's can be delicious at times, even if they are not pizza.
That goofy quasi-quiche thing they serve in Chicago for instance, can be quite appetizing, but it is not pizza.
user2334
Yeah, take that Chicagoans!
user2334
21:09
Chicagoese?
That's a good term.
Pizza Hut is a UPLO, by that definition.
@MarkTrapp chicagoans is accurate
user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz ???
Chicago-style pizza or pie typically refers to a deep-dish pizza style developed in Chicago, United States. Chicago-style pizza has a crust up to three inches tall at the edge, slightly higher than the ingredients, which include large amounts of cheese and chunky tomato sauce, acting as a large bowl. Besides deep-dish, the term also refers to stuffed pizza, another Chicago style. Both styles of pizza are usually eaten with a knife and fork. While in Chicago most pizzerias also serve thin-crust pizza that is generally also in a style characteristic to the city, the term Chicago-style pizz...
Chicagoan, according to the totally reliable yahoo answers.
user15026
21:10
@LessPop_MoreFizz That sounds ridiculous.
user2334
We're called Portlanders because Portland is kooky and quirky
Portlandians?
user2334
Nope, Portlanders
Deep dish pizza is the best
user2334
@AshleyNunn It is not pizza.
@MarkTrapp I am not sure which they prefer here in worst portland.
but I am off to drink local beer and eat fried seafood, so I will try to find out perhaps.
user2334
I would say Wikipedia it but Worst Portland doesn't even have a Demonym entry in their infobox THIS IS WHY YOU'RE THE WORST PORTLAND
@MarkTrapp Hey, I am not from this portland, I am just here for work.
Also, fwiw, I will take Allagash and Shipyard over Rogue and Deschutes any day of the week. That's right, this Portland has better beer.
Also, Lobsters everywhere.
user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz yeah yeah it was an open chat message to the city of Worst Portland
user2334
@LessPop_MoreFizz Only Deschutes's Black Butte Porter is something to write home about. The rest are bleh. I really don't like Shipyard
21:17
@MarkTrapp Yeah, but I wanted to include two per city. The real point here is Allagash > Rogue.
user2334
I haven't had Rogue TOO MANY BREWERIES HERE DAM
@MarkTrapp they are only like the biggest/most famous/most well regarded brewery in portland west iirc?
user2334
Yeah they won a few awards here and there big whoop Portland's got one of the highest concentrations of breweries per capita I HAVEN'T GOTTEN AROUND TO THE Rs YET
Good Sicilian pizza > all. Bad Sicilian pizza is the worst pizza, though, and it's a tough balance to get right.
It's usually not worth the risk.
@StrixVaria Basically, Spumoni Gardens or GTFO.
21:38
Hmmm... LG Optimus G or Samsung Galaxy S3...
@SaintWacko BMO
@OrigamiRobot What?
@SaintWacko Buy a BMO
@OrigamiRobot And the would be...?

Q: Familiars with max statistics

DavidI was wondering, when using familiars whose both levels are on max, you get anything when you engage in battles or not as they are on max? If this is the case do you still use familiars Who are on maximum stats? Thanks.

21:41
@SaintWacko A small communication device. It also takes pictures and records video.
@OrigamiRobot link?
user15026
@origamirobot don't confuse him. :p
@AshleyNunn Too late. Care to help unconfuse me?
Actually, it's not really confusion. More like "I have no idea what he's talking about. Oh well, back to reading"
user15026
21:43
sure. BMO is the robot from Adventure Time that is in Origami's avatar.
I see. The link helped too lol
I think I prefer my communications devices non-sentient
user15026
Lol yeah he got that up faster than I could type on my phone
But BMO is great!
21:56
Finally, time to leave work and take the dog for a walk
uh, hello from "modern" Firefox for Windows 8. It's buggy here.
so, middle clicking doesn't work. Num lock doesn't work - except for keypad 5
oh, middle clicking does work - for scrolling purposes. Which is why the scroll wheel doesn't work.
I guess that makes sense.
about:mozilla does work however. I guess stuff that matters isn't broken.
oh, and to use it I have to keep Firefox as my default browser. Obviously
I guess this makes my shortest-lived attempt to get back to Firefox for me
user2334
You don't use Firefox? Why do you hate freedom?

Q: Unable to login "duplicate login"

ArkiveI lost internet connection while playing. Now when I attempt to log in, I get the error "duplicate login" I've tried restarting Torchlight and resetting my internet connection, but it still doesn't work. Is there a way to fix this, or do I need to wait for a server-side timeout or something?

Q: How can I jump between hanging ladders?

Colonel PanicI try to jump between distant hanging ladders, but I can't make it! This is infuriating :\

This brewpub has BLUEBERRY BBQ SAUCE.
22:32
@LessPop_MoreFizz ... ewwww
user2334
I hate to say it, but you are totally, staggeringly wrong again. Let me contrive an example: Graphics rendering for video games. It's a little market you may have heard of worth 10s of billions of dollars. — Rocketmagnet 7 hours ago
user2334
Ah, the Summer of Love
@MarkTrapp admittedly, the answer doesn't really make sense. You could make the exact same argument to argue that we should never make a 64-bit processor, and yet they are pretty useful
user2334
Yeah, it does seem a bit "640 K ought to be enough for anybody"-esque. I just liked the over-the-topness of the comment
22:49
@MarkTrapp It would have been better to argue either that such a thing would be impractical to make, worse to program on, or just not useful right now
23:12
@murgatroid99 we do hit >32 bit words though. Memory addresses are the big one.
@BenBrocka my point is that our reasons for having 64 bit words now could just as easily become reasons to use >64 bit words in the future
@murgatroid99 Yeah, but the question is now, and the answer is now. And even into the foreseeable future, 64 bits are pretty freaking big. 2,147,483,647? That's a pretty small number. 2^256? I think you're getting close to/well beyond "number of atoms in the universe" territory, so a single number that large seems generally inapplicable, unlike 2 billion. 2 billion is nothing.
Each "doubled" word size goes from being "big" to "insanely ridiculously huge" relative to the last one, so double the bits is a big thing; you need a lot to justify it. memory sizes >4GB are a reason to justify it. limited IP addresses were enough to justify it. What justifies 2^256?
user2334

Q: battlefield 1943 free game from Sony

JohnAnyone know how to download the free BF1943 game on PS3? I read the following on Wikipedia, "Shortly after EA was threatened with being taken to court over its failure to deliver the free game BF1943, as announced at E3, EA announced they will offer owners of the PlayStation 3 version of Battlef...

@BenBrocka the problem I have is that the answer as I read it argues that there is no reason to increase word size in general, without any mention of how ridiculously large a 256 bit word is. This means that in that post you could just replace "256" with "32" and you'd get the same argument, but it would be wrong.
If he had said something like "256 bits is so absurdly big that there is no practical application", it wouldn't bug me the same way
23:22
@murgatroid99 I read that as sort of assumed; if you can understand the answer, you should know that 2^256 is a number beyond what can reasonably found in nature. In fact, looking it up, it is surprisingly close to the estimated number of atoms in the observable universe
...at a scale where a couple orders of magnitude is "surprisingly close"
@BenBrocka maybe I'm just overly sensitive to how arguments are presented
plus, there are always some uses for bigger registers. Like bit sets
Plus compilers with larger word sizes would probably have more registers, which could come in handy. I know they're not connected, but larger word sizes are probably the only way we'll get more registers
@murgatroid99 a 256 bit array would need some major organization. Outside of cryptography, CS and math I find it hard to believe there's a practical use for anything like 2^512
@murgatroid99 IIRC, 64 bits already equates to 4 petabytes of memory registers
A supercomputer could probably need more, but not much less
@BenBrocka I mean registers like in the CPU itself. x86-64 has 16 64-bit integer registers
@BenBrocka a 256 bit array wouldn't take any more work to deal with than a 64 bit array
23:37
@murgatroid99 But logically, what is it? What takes that many bits but is a single entity?
@BenBrocka I meant a bit set like: each bit represents a different item, and it's 1 if it's in the set and 0 otherwise. That way, you can consider a 64 bit word to represent any subset of {0, ..., 63}. The larger a word is, the bigger sets you can represent. It's not a huge thing, but it is something
