I think you get better medals when you have more stars.
Is it worth it to spend ten seconds spinning around a bar when you could be just zipping to 1st place and actually win it?
@badp Yes, because you don't actually win based on place. Stars determine rank, actually, now that I think about it. Finishing first just gives you more stars than finishing in a later place.
You can finish first and not win.
ah
You can not finish first, and still win.
Man, there are so many talking pairs of tits in these cutscenes...
Actually, I think it's the same set each time.
ANYWAY.
@badp Yeah, it's a crazy game.
Your car stands up every now and then too, and starts running.
user15026
@GnomeSlice sigh
20:03
@AshleyNunn What?
user15026
@GnomeSlice Talking pairs of tits. Really.
@AshleyNunn Really really.
:P
@GnomeSlice And this coming from the guy that was complaining the Huntress was displaying too much ass.
@fbueckert I wasn't complaining, just thought it was odd.
@GnomeSlice Certainly sounded like complaining.
20:05
@fbueckert Gnomeslice is a beacon of contradictions.
user15026
@Wipqozn This is the truest thing I have heard today.
I would like to remind everybody that Gnomeslice is a solved problem: he doesn't exist
He's not even our first non-existing major contributor! It's okay, really.
Arqade is an ontologically-fair website.
I have enough money to buy either CS:GO or Skyrim on Steam. Which one should I buy, and why?
@Bane The one you think you'll like the best
They're wildly different games
@badp, but if I knew that, I wouldn't be asking...
20:08
(it's not like having to choose between Torchlight 2 or Diablo 3.)
I'm just looking for opinions, I have to choose between the two.
@Bane CS:GO is your general first-person-shooty one-hit-and-you-are-dead game; Skyrim is that role playing game with quests and items and levels and shouts.
I suggest watching let's plays on Youtube of either
Yeah, I'm doing that, but still... I didn't really get immersed in Morrowind.
Unfortunately I never played either series myself :(
except for that period when CS:GO was in beta. Then I played thrice and uninstalled.
@Bane Y'know, asking a bunch of random strangers for their opinions almost never helps. :P
20:10
@fbueckert Well, I don't have anything better to do while an update is installing, so I figured I could ask for some opinions. Couldn't hurt.
user2334
SCREW THEM GET SKYRIM CUZ DRAGONS DRAGONS ARE AWESOME
Have you ever played CS or CS:S?
@Bane If you like spending most of your time watching and not playing, go with Counterstrike. If your tolerance for rage and hate spewing teenagers is non-existent, go with Skyrim.
@badp I haven't.
@Bane I think the point is that the games are so different that which one you like will depend more on your personal gaming preferences than on any objective measure of quality that we can give
20:12
@murgatroid99 You've got a point there.
@murgatroid99 And is one of the main reasons I hate those stupid threads that are, "Game X or Game Y?"
The learning curves are also very different. CounterStrike's a game that's been out for, what, a dozen years now?
Does Skyrim have an online component to it? Like an arena?
@Bane Nope. Pure singleplayer.
@fbueckert yeah, that's the whole problem with Shark vs Gorilla
Jeff Atwood on August 15, 2011

Who would win in a fight between a Gorilla and a Shark?

OK, maybe you’re thinking that’s a ridiculous question. Perhaps it is. But various forms of this question get asked all the time. Consider this now-ancient Stack Overflow question titled Python v. Perl:

Okay, so I’m finally making the jump into scripting languages and I have decided to focus on either Python or Perl. The problem is: I don’t know which to cut my teeth on.

Most of my programming experience is in C, Java, and C++. There’s no specific task I would be learning Python/Perl for, other that possibly applying it to my dev work to make life easier in general. …

Q: Shark vs Gorilla Blog Posts

Jack B NimbleIn the chat JohnO suggested a Shark vs Gorilla series of blog posts. While Shark vs Gorilla questions are not allowed in the normal site, it could be something fun for people to participate in on the blog. Please post your matchups here. Once some of the suggestions are upvoted we'll coordinat...

@MarkTrapp I...no. no. I don' want to click that.
user2334
Really? I don't think something for the purpose of enjoying scifi/fantasy is inappropriate for the blog of a site whose purpose is enjoying scifi/fantasy. Not everything has to be Very Serious and Important to be relevant, especially not on a community blog. — Gabe Willard Sep 26 at 17:12
@MarkTrapp ugh
At the core all games should be entertaining, some games more than others. While everyone has their distinct tastes, I do believe that I can benefit from a discussion with people who have played both games, especially if I have to choose between them. I'm not asking anything definitive.
user2334
20:15
@Wipqozn That comment sums it up
@MarkTrapp I don't see the problem with that tbh. The blog doesn't need to be super serious.
@MarkTrapp Nice come back.
user2334
it doesn't need to be super serious but it should at least strive to be above BuzzFeed or Mashable
Do consoles like the PS3 have some kind of aim assist for Skyrim? I'm not sure if I would get the same experience if I used a PS3 controller on my PC to play Skyrim as opposed to playing it on an actual console... Apparently controllers are harder to use tham M&K...
@Bane At least you chose the right place to ask. :P
user2334
@Bane If your choice is CS GO or Skyrim on the PS3 don't get Skyrim. It's an awful awful port that will most likely not get any of the DLC
20:19
@MarkTrapp I don't see anything personally wrong with that
@Bane If you're going to get Skyrim, go for the PC version; it's mod support blows any other version out of the water.
I don't own any consoles, only a PC.
the blog can be used for content you don't want on the main site
Same goes for Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
Do we want reviews on Arqade? No. We still have them on the blog.
user2334
20:21
@badp the blog is a reflection of the community, what with it being a community blog. Yes, it should be for stuff that doesn't fit the Q&A format, but shark vs. gorilla is terrible, awful, no-good content that lazy bloggers who get paid per view fart out and it makes the internet worse. So, so much worse. See: BuzzFeed
because professional reviews are 100% honest all the time and the publisher will always accept whatever the reviewer has to say about the product
:P
I see your point but I wouldn't get too worked up about it
user2334
WOW BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE ONLY TWO THINGS THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE WRITTEN ON THE INTERNET: PROFESSIONAL ARTICLES OR GARBAGE WHAT A WONDERFUL PLACE THE INTERNET IS
so we don't want to do what pay-per-view lazy bloggers do and we don't want to do what pay-per-month professionals do
user2334
Right: Shark vs. Gorilla is 0 on a scale of 1-100 in terms of quality. There doesn't need to be solid gold on the blog but aim a little higher than 0
Look at it this way, it's been 20 days since it was posted. Has anything happened?
I think nothing will come out of it.
shrug
You know what I rather see weird about the scifi blog?
jackbnimble on September 12, 2012

Chapter 1: The accident

Cara Miller stared out of her lifepod window into the vastness of space. For all she knew, she was the sole survivor of the ill-fated Astral Light, a rescue ship that ultimately would need its own rescue. It was all supposed to be routine. The Astral Light had been called out to assist a mining freighter which had suffered a major collision with a dislodged piece of asteroid. Systems were failing and the freighter sent out a general distress beacon.

When the freighter came into sight, Cara could hardly believe anyone was still alive. The ship was a mangled mess, with piec …

This post. This post is pretty weird.
20:26
@MarkTrapp You use all caps so I know your opinion is more valid.

CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR TRUE
user2334
@badp Yeah, that's weird too. I'm of the mind that if you have to aim real low to get anything on the blog, maybe it's time to shut the thing down
I think Caps Lock is cruise control, alright.
Just cruise right off a cliff, please.
user15026
Yeaaaah.
@badp It is weird. It's not even very well written, in my opinion
20:28
@AshleyNunn so is your hair really blue?
user15026
@Wipqozn ? At the moment it's purple.
@AshleyNunn Nifty.
...and, unlike the Shark v Gorilla blog post, it's a blog post that actually exists.
user2334
@Wipqozn "things stalkers say"
user15026
@Wipqozn :) It was blue for a bit, then that faded, so it was pink, then now it is purple.
20:29
That said... meh. Scifi is not Arqade. It's difficult enough to get this one community straight :P
@MarkTrapp Totally.
user15026
@Wipqozn You're lurking near my window, aren't you.
@AshleyNunn ...No...not at... uh... no

It's so nice that our site is perfect, and doesn't allow any stupid questions.

@AshleyNunn Oh well. closes tab
@MarkTrapp Yeah, that I agree with. If the blog isn't working, it isn't working. Don't just fill it with shit content. That's just going to make the problem worse.

user15026
@fbueckert Well, you might be an exception but I have no way of knowing.
@AshleyNunn He's the one that set-up the webcam feed to begin with!
20:33
@AshleyNunn Somewhat crazy and outright insane I may be, but a creeper, I ain't.
user15026
@Wipqozn SEE I KNEW I CANT TRUST ANYONE
user15026
@fbueckert Now I don't know who to trust!
@AshleyNunn Preferably NOT random people you meet online?
@AshleyNunn You can trust me!
On an unrelated note you should open your blinds.
user15026
@fbueckert Oh, but you all seem so nice.
user15026
20:34
@Wipqozn grins Should I now.
@AshleyNunn Yeah. The sunlight is trapped. You need to let it out.
@AshleyNunn Text is deceiving. :P
user15026
@fbueckert So I am discovering.
user15026
@Wipqozn OH NO NOT THE SUNLIGHT opens them
On an unrelated note, I have another performance tonight, so hopefully this time we get a decent video I can show you guys.
user15026
20:35
@fbueckert That would be nifty.
@Wipqozn I thought we were supposed to AVOID the daystar.
user15026
@fbueckert I don't want to trap the sunshine! That is mean!
@AshleyNunn I don't care about trapping it. I care about keeping it out in the first place!
FAE
FAE
@fbueckert Oh neat, have fun!
user15026
@fbueckert But it is so nice and so warm
20:37
@fbueckert Performance for...?
@FAE I had the first one two weeks ago, but Murphy's Law kicked in for our cameras. ><
@Wipqozn That waltz I've been practicing for near-on a year.
FAE
FAE
@fbueckert Aw. :(
What kind of dancing will you be doing tonight?
Nevermind!
@FAE Same waltz.
We're performing for the elder residents at one of the local hospitals.
FAE
FAE
Ah, that's really nice.
@AshleyNunn The daystar is deceiving. It WANTS you to think it's all nice and cuddly.
And then it BURNS you!
user15026
20:40
@fbueckert Oh.
@James no badges for you ever
@fbueckert You waltz? You sir, have just gained extra respect from me.
@Wipqozn Not only waltz, but tango and quickstep are in my repertoire, too.
@fbueckert It's like you want to earn all the respect I have to give.
Among others.
20:43
hm, is there a way to open a file in VIM in read-only mode?
without actually setting the file to read only
@AshleyNunn Humor us, go look for pics on the internet! You'll see we're keeping them all in our own very-shared-yet-very-private Dropbox folder.
To the googles!
Especially that one where the cat is looking at you while... er... actually, nevermind that one.
user15026
@badp How sweet.
FAE
FAE
@badp It's so creepy because it almost sounds plausible.
user15026
20:44
@badp My cat spends more time in my roommate's room, tbh
yup! Awesome. I love you VIM <3
@FAE Hey, we needed photos to get free extra upload space on Dropbox! Lacking a life of our own, Dropbox eventually stopped giving us extra space for the umpteenth photo out of our window. Everything kinda went downhill from there.
user15026
@badp Our window Our window?
It's for FREE ADDITIONAL DROPBOX STORAGE. I'm sure you can understand.
user15026
Yeah, I suppose that would make it....No.
20:46
@AshleyNunn The Bridge has got wonderful windows but space kinda looks the same every day.
user15026
@badp So you peek in other people's windows?
FAE
FAE
@AshleyNunn Really dunno if "better" or "worse" would apply here.
What on earth is going on here? I come back from a meeting and find you all stalking each other
@badp We've got the most gorgeous view of the Earth, and space is BORING?
It's actually why this page has a white background; to break up the monotony!
20:47
@SaintWacko Welcome to the Bridge. Business as usual.
user15026
@SaintWacko Nope, I think I am the only one getting stalked.
@fbueckert It's been, what, 26 months now?
@fbueckert Fair enough. This place reminds me of the Cantina on Kongregate. I think that's why I like it so much :)
We've already webcammed the shit out of Earth.
user15026
@badp Still, why you being all creepy in my windows?
20:48
@badp Alright. So let's go orbit Mercury. Life won't be boring there!
@fbueckert Man! Think of the latency!
user15026
@badp Picky, picky.
It's already bad enough.
@badp I think it's less latency than it is the hard limits of light speed.
@fbueckert Don't forget the sun being in the way part of the time
20:49
@fbueckert Well additional distance means less bandwidth and more errors means additional error checking means more processing means more latency.
And yeah, the sun.
@fbueckert that's what latency is: the time delay
user2334
Drill a hole through the Sun problem solved
user15026
@MarkTrapp Best solution.
@MarkTrapp Better idea. Just sit in the sun. Unlimited power!
SG:U did it! We can, too!
@fbueckert We'd reduce the Sun's lifetime by several centuries.
20:50
A Dyson sphere is a hypothetical megastructure originally described by Freeman Dyson. Such a "sphere" would be a system of orbiting solar power satellites meant to completely encompass a star and capture most or all of its energy output. Dyson speculated that such structures would be the logical consequence of the long-term survival and escalating energy needs of a technological civilization, and proposed that searching for evidence of the existence of such structures might lead to the detection of advanced intelligent extraterrestrial life. Since then, other variant designs involving bui...
@badp Pfft. Centures, schmenturies.
@fbueckert Think of the centuries of kittens that won't get to live because of our drainage.
@Wipqozn we should get working on that
THINK OF ALL THE CUTE IMAGES THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.
@badp There are other suns.
@Wipqozn Yeah, we need one of these.
20:51
@fbueckert Isn't a latency of 8 minutes enough?
user2334
What's a couple of centuries when the sun's going to expand to engulf the Earth in one last desperate grasp of life in 5 billion years #yolo
@badp Presumably, by that point, we're carrying the internet around with us. What's the problem?
user15026
@Wipqozn This makes me think of vacuums (like appliances)
Maybe it'd be more practical to push the sun a little closer to the heart in the process. Say make it 4 minutes or so.
FAE
FAE
@Wipqozn Have you ever read Pandora's Star?
That's all I think of whenever I see a Dyson sphere mentioned.
20:52
@FAE No, but I've seen the Star Trek TNG episode on Dyson Spheres. How I first heard of them.
Ringworld!
but NONE OF THIS IS RELEVANT as long as we can't get additional free Dropbox space. So it's time to tap into Agent's webcam now I guess.
user15026
@badp Hurrah, I am free from the creepers
user2334
@FAE Also featured in TNG: they rescue Scotty from stasis inside of a transporter buffer! <-- spoiler alert
user2334
WHATEVER WIPQOZN WHATEVER
20:53
@MarkTrapp That happens in a first few minutes, so it's no big deal.
FAE
FAE
@SaintWacko Haven't read that yet. I tend to trend a little more towards space opera than hard scifi for my taste.
@AshleyNunn In whose closet do you think Agent's been living in the last few months?
Well, it's time for me to go home and clean up for the performance.
See you guys later!
Ever noticed that the kittens ate a little more than usual recently?
@FAE You should definitely read it. Larry Niven is excellent. Although my favorite series is Discworld
FAE
FAE
20:56
@SaintWacko It's on my very very very long to-read list. I know there's a bunch of other novels in the Ringworld series.
@fbueckert Enjoy!
user15026
@badp That would explain a whole lot...
user15026
@fbueckert Have fun!
@FAE Yeah, the Ringworld Prequels provide a great backstory. And of course all of Niven's books take place in the Ringworld universe
user15026
I thought Norbert was just a little extra hungry.
I am getting a Kindle in a few weeks and I still have like 8 physical books to read.
First world problems.
20:58
I keep a library in my Dropbox folder. I have about 450 books in it right now
user15026
@StrixVaria Oh man. I have a stack of actual books on my nightstand to read that I got from a booksale, and like 5 on my Kobo. It's ridiculous.
I need to read Mistborn 2-3.
I think those are the highest priority physical books I have right now.
On the internet all I do is read (and occasionally write). So I'm not really hungry to read more when I go AFK
FAE
FAE
@StrixVaria I have one of those but I still love (and actually prefer) buying physical books.
I've never tried reading anything off a Kindle before.
