The mechanics seem to be - Battle to capture new characters (or sets of abilities, really), battles being 1v1 (with a roster of backups). Everything else is standard RPG fare, with leveling, item use, skills, etc. etc.

@WorldEngineer Well, I could see a game where the mechanic is abstracted such that the protagonist captures skill sets that he/she can switch between, rather than manifesting the skill sets as separate characters.
