Arda should really get that checked out. Being a mermaid covered in blood has to be hazardous, on account of the sharks and such.

@TimStone Indeed.

Why would DARE give me the raspberry?!

Q: Stackoverflow q&a print view

KerxPhiloHi Stackoverflowers, I wanted to know if anyones aware if the Stackoverflow team is working on a printable view for the Q&A's. It'd even be cooler to have it output to PDF format for a very nice print job. :) It would be awesome to have a feature like that.

Q: Area51 Commitment Formula tweak for StackExchange 1 sites?

Tom ResingBased on the answer to the question about how is Area51 committment calculated, I'm guessing the SharePoint Overflow Proposal is lagging in the number of users with 200 rep on other sites. If this is true, could you consider tweaking the formula to add reputation from StackExchange 1.0 sites like...

It’s been a while since we’ve done something arbitrary, complicated, and confusing, so today I’m happy to announce that the name of the company has been changed, effective immediately, to Stack Exchange Inc!

There’s a method behind this madness, of course: we want to emphasize the importance of the 45 sites in our network, which has long since stopped being about programmers:

That, plus, whenever we told The New York Times that we were “Stack Overflow,” they would go to stackoverflow.com and have a heart attack. At least this way people wondering about the company understand that we’re about more than just programmer questions. We have Battlestar Galactica too! …

@Powerlord No, for the theme.

Q: What's the video game with a voice-over saying "speed"?

fandelostI know it may sound vague, but I can't recall what was the video game that has a power up that you'd pick up and then the voice-over said "speed" (more like "speeeed"). I'm pretty sure it's a mainstream old(ish) FPS, I thought it might be Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament, but I can't find any lead on...

@ArdaXi That's not hugely surprising

@IvoFlipse For me it isn't. I have specific extensions to improve YouTube, they don't just work on every site.
@YiJiang Same thing here.

Arda XiI was on my profile page just now, and I wanted to see my questions sorted by the amount of votes, so I clicked the votes button. However, the link did not go to my profile page, but rather to this API link.

Then you double click it, doesn't that take you to youtube?

It doesn't even take more than a HTML change to fix this, but "sorry, but for me Javascript loads instantly, so I can't repro this." is what I got.
@IvoFlipse Sometimes, and not before the video starts loading, which is annoying.
Who cares, I'm not saying Jeff should do it, I'm doing it myself. You know, be pro-active.

So many splits.
I just realised something. SE uses tables for design.

@ArdaXi Yeah, a little bit of me dies every time I read SE's sources
There are horrible horrible markup abuse everywhere
@ArdaXi Its fine, though you might want to replace that with a single regex for the sake of your sanity

Oh, yeah, of course.
Ugh, I don't have regexbuddy here.

Hey, Regexbuddy has the Jeff Atwood Seal of Approval!

@Mana Yeah, I know, but it's still pretty good software.

@Arda :(

What?

@LessPop_MoreFizz Wow... that managed to crash the latest Firefox 4 nightly

@YiJiang Didn't work on Chrome nightly.

1:11 PM
Worked on Linux Chrome
awesome idea too

@YiJiang Any idea why this would only work for the first <object> it finds? I have to run the script twice for it to catch both.
gist: 862160, 2011-03-09 13:15:04Z
(function(){
	var objects = document.getElementsByTagName("object");
	for(var i = 0; i < objects.length; i++) {
		var object = objects[i],
			node = object.getElementsByTagName("embed")[0];
		if(node.src.substr(10,12) == ".youtube.com") {
			var id = node.src.replace(/https?:\/\/(?:www.)?youtube\.com\/v\/([a-zA-Z0-9]*).*/g, "$1"),
				imgsrc = "http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/" + id + "/hqdefault.jpg",
				url = "http://youtube.com/watch?v=" + id,
				anchor = document.createElement("a"),
				img = document.createElement("img");
			img.src = imgsrc;
			anchor.href = url;
			anchor.appendChild(img);
			object.parentNode.replaceChild(anchor, object);
		}
	}
})();
document.getElementsByTagName("object") properly returns a NodeList with two elements.

Should work, can't see why not

Might be a Chrome issue, can you try it on your end?

Oh, you're removing the object element
Eh, lemme think... try running through the nodeList backwards instead of forward

Ooh. NodeList is live, of course.
I can just turn it into a while loop, break out of it once the NodeList is empty.
while(objects.length > 0)
And then keep accessing objects[0].
Yay, it worked, thanks.

@Oak The first spam was sent in 1978.
I don't think that figure is correct.
E-mail spam, also known as junk e-mail or unsolicited bulk e-mail (UBE), is a subset of spam that involves nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by e-mail. Definitions of spam usually include the aspects that e-mail is unsolicited and sent in bulk. One subset of UBE is UCE (unsolicited commercial e-mail). E-mail spam has steadily grown since the early 1990s. Botnets, networks of virus-infected computers, are used to send about 80% of spam. Since the cost of the spam is borne mostly by the recipient, it is effectively postage due advertising. The legal status of spam vari...

Oak
@FallenAngelEyes eh, I need to come up with a homework idea and I haven't a clue

What kind of idea?

Oak
Basic programming, it's an introductory assignment. Should include control structures and data structures, nothing much more, solvable in a couple of hours
The students already know how to code (I hope, at least), they just need to do it in a language they don't know yet

2:25 PM
I wonder if I should post the ad for StackExchangeScripts up onto the Gaming ad question

Gary Thuerk has a great reputation. "Some are excited to meet someone with an unusual claim to fame; some want to beat him up on the spot; and others just avoid him like the plague."

@Oak Aristotle sez, your students already know Python, you just have to wake up their knowledge
Have you tried from brain import python?

@YiJiang Feel free to try

Oak
@badp the language is Squeak

2:27 PM
Worse that happens, you'll let us define what is an off-topic ad.

I wonder if I should make an ad for Dead Space 2.

@Oak Then I'm afraid you're on your own :P

It doesn't look like the youtube linking supports parsing a link that's pointing to a certain point in the video

@FallenAngelEyes It does.

There we go.

Wait, is there a post detailing why we use Ventrilo so I can downvote it?

Oak
2:30 PM
@ArdaXi oh, right

whoops, misclick. Upvoted :P

We should use Mumble, dangit!

So, can anyone contact EA so we can use our advertising Dead Space 2 to make money?

Anyway, about ventrilo
@Zypher just discussed it with the team and decided to get one
He didn't know about Mumble
and once I talked with him, he'd already bought an instance.

I don't like software where the creator can arbitrarily decide to throw your server offline for no reason whatsoever.
It's in the Ventrilo TOS. Go read it. I'll wait.

2:36 PM
I already know how much Ventrilo's legal blabber sucks.

Plus it's horrible software. TeamSpeak has a much better UI. (Haven't tried Mumble)

I switched my squad from TS2 (and short-lived Ventrilo attempts) to Mumble.

Now badp is crushed between the planets.

Our guild switched to Mumble last year, and we really like it. Good quality, the auto-gain is a really nice feature, and it also supports positional audio in some games, like L4D 1 & 2

The planets are in sync!
You know, I'd love to use some voice program with GSE, but there's no way I'm downloading Vent.

@badp does Mumble support positional audio in TF2? It does in Battlefield 2, which makes it the preferred choice there

@Oak eh, in TF2 you just use the inbuild voice communication system right?

@badp I usually don't.

Q: How to get monsters to spawn in a certain place in minecraft?

shawn5657Okay, I have an SMP server and I don't want monsters to spawn near my spawn area or anywhere within it. Also, I have built castle walls around it and a huge house (which keeps getting destroyed), but they still spawn inside; is there any way to fix this?

Oak
@badp I don't use voice in TF2
I only use it for Project Reality, which is BF2
And BF2 has very nice built-in audio support, but it doesn't allow inter-squad communication, which is where things like Mumble get useful

Also I liked Mumble's ingame overlay a lot better than Vent's (though I don't know if they've changed that in the last year)

Vent's overlay is just plain horrible
also I really despise the university's network administrators

Q: How valuable is mastery as a mitigation stat for a warrior tank?

dpatchCan anyone provide some maths on precisely how valuable mastery is as a mitigation stat versus the other mitigation/avoidance stats?
