12:10 AM
@badp I have a question about question syntax if you don't mind

@ItakeDrukqs shoot!

@badp One moment as I try to figure out how to word it...

@GraceNote Sounds like you're having a case of Googley Blues.

@badp Let's say I was trying to explain to someone how to perform a certain command. For example: "go to X area and press (key) to jump"

okay.

12:13 AM
@badp If I instead wanted to say "go to X area and [j]ump".
@badp What would I surround the 'j' key with?

It's really a matter of taste

@badp Square brackets? Apostrophes?
@badp I see. There's no real 'accepted' variation of it?

You can use "<kbd>j</kbd>ump", it's ugly markdown but it gives you a 'nice' "3D" button (don't overdo it like I have in my latest answer)

Does that perform the same action as `j`ump would?

You can use " `j`ump ", it's better markdown and looks the same as the kbd version -- just without the 3D effect
or you can use plain text versions such as "j'ump" or "j`ump", as seen on USENET
there's no standard, format as you wish
you'll only get formatting edited if you abuse it :)

12:16 AM
Understood. Thanks for the insight. You have my vote.
:D

I wasn't fishing for votes, but hey, whatever rocks your boat.

Speaking of votes, I can't believe someone (2 people!) actually downvoted Grace.

@badp Your opinion/assistance is still considered a random act of kindness no matter the size of the act, and that to me is a quality a good moderator needs.

@ItakeDrukqs Meta SO does that to people :)

I'm scared to progress anymore in NetHack. I've never made it this far.

12:21 AM
Where did you reach?
The farthest I've gone was Quest 1.

I'm in DLVL 9, have not done Gnomish Mines or Sokoban as I've never even seen the end of the mines and only touched Sokoban once by luck

How did Nethack get its name anyway?

I have a blessed rustproof +1 Excalibur, my lance is intact, wand of striking, telepathy and a blindfold, -3 AC
And my Horse will hopefully soon be a Warhorse
@Strix It was originally simply called Hack, which was inspired by Rogue, as far as I know.
I'm still having encumbrance issues, and I can never seem to figure out how to identify what my scrolls and potions will do.
They just sit in my inventory until I die.

12:38 AM

Q: What are the chances for King Dedede's side+b to perform each of its variants?

StrixVariaWhen using King Dedede's side+b attack, he can launch a variety of different objects: A round waddling guy who is rather useless A round waddling guy who shoots lightning occasionally A spikey black thing that deals good damage and has good knockback An item capsule Are there any other option...

@Strix: Apparently our musical compatibility is SUPER

@FallenAngelEyes Awesome :D Not enough people are super compatible with me.

Holy shit you listen to Ayreon :O

I listen to a lot of Ayreon

:D
I'm a big fan of symphonic metal, looks like you are too :D

12:40 AM
I go through phases, and symphonic metal is usually every other for me
It always comes back to Ghost Love Score by Nightwish

:O
That's like my fave song by them <3
It's so epic

Oh wow you listen to Richard Cheese too :D I haven't heard his stuff in way too long

I do! He is unfortunately in dire straits moneywise :(

I follow him on FB, they've had to resort to using uh... what is it, kickstart.com? to try to raise some cash to keep recording

12:44 AM
That's really awful. I should go buy a bunch of his stuff in attempt to help

Yeah, I'm planning on doing the same when I get some more cash.
I've only started checking out Coheed & Cambria this year

I wonder if I can buy direct from the band though instead of through some music publisher...

Yeah you can

Coheed & Cambria is very hit or miss

go to their website and stuff
I don't like their first album, Second Stage Turbine Blade
Their sound isn't as put together as the later stuff
and their lyrics aren't very accessible
(overall)

12:45 AM
It's very hard for me to tell albums apart from each other for most bands because of the way I organize my music

But I've really started to like them.
Ah, how's that?

One giant list of song names lol

The songs on each album are grouped together but I can't tell where one ends and the next begins

gotcha
I actually was introduced to them through Rock Band >_>

12:47 AM
I found out about a bunch of bands I like through that or Guitar Hero

Welcome Home is just an epic song

but I did know C&C before that

I also recently got into Rise Against through RB as well XD
also Claudio's hair

Hahaha that's all I remembered from their Favor House Atlantic music video

Some of their stuff is definitely hit or miss, but I really have respect for a band that's completely running on concept

12:48 AM
Yeah that's what I love so much about Ayreon (and the music itself of course)
Apart from Actual Fantasy, every Ayreon album is a continuation of the same story

Yeah, an ex of mine introduced me to them, he's met Arjen a few times and stuff

Oh yeah you're actually in the Netherlands
That must make meeting him a bit easier :P

Haha, yeah

A roommate of mine in college was listening to them one day and turned it off because he didn't like it, but I went over and made him tell me what it was so I could get it for myself

I don't go to a lot of concerts though, I really would like to
I've seen Within Temptation twice though

12:50 AM
I haven't seen any symphonic metal live, but I have been to a bunch of concerts

They're really great live

They're really great in general

I've only been to a handful :(

Have you heard of Leaves' Eyes?

Yes!
I have their first album
lead singer from Theatre of Tragedy

12:51 AM
Yeah
I think Leaves' Eyes is my favorite band in that genre overall

Nightwish is still my first love, though I liked Tarja better as a singer, even if she turned out to be a diva.
a friend of mine is coming over in summer to go to Wacken Open Air and if I can get the money, I might try to go with him

If there are any WoW players around at the moment (@Brant perhaps?) who are fond of playing the 'minigame' that is economic manipulation: The Undermine Journal is back! HOOOOOO RAAAAAAAAY.

Wacken Open Air?

Avantasia's gonna be there, Blind Guardian, Apocalyptica (whom I love), Rhapsody (I refuse to call them Rhapsody of Fire)

I agree with you on Rhapsody's name

12:53 AM
Wacken Open Air (W:O:A) is one of the leading summer open air heavy metal music festivals. It takes place annually in the small town of Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Germany. With 80,000 festival visitors, and including personnel a total of roughly 82,500 attendees in 2010, it attracts all kinds of metal music fans, such as fans of black metal, death metal, power metal, thrash metal, gothic metal, folk metal, and even metalcore and hard rock from around the world. The festival was first held in 1990 as a small event for local German bands. By 1998 the event had become the major ...

Apocalyptica is playing near me in March
I'm considering going.

Nice
Most of my taste in metal is European metal, I don't listen to American metal as much.

I liked them more before they started having vocals all the time, though

I really love symphonic metal a lot.
I don't really listen to their recent stuff, I like the older cello-centric stuff.

Exactly
Their take on Hall of the Mountain King is amazing

12:54 AM
Yessssss
I like their Metallica covers as well

They make Metallica sound like they knew what they were doing

Do you listen to Trans-Siberian Orchestra at all?

No I don't know anything by them
Except that one wintery song that's all over advertisements

They do mostly Christmas stuff, yeah.
But their concerts are amazing.
They're finally coming to the NL in March, they're going to do their Beethoven album.

That sounds cool

12:56 AM
Gonna try to go if I can.

I'm a big fan of classical music too

Every time I'm back in the US for xmas, I try to see them. I've gone in 2006, 08, and '10 for xmas.

Back in the US? Are you from here originally?

I think you'd like them then, they do a lot of classical pieces on their most recent album.
Their version of the Carmina Burana is awesome.
Yeah, I grew up in upstate NY.
In a rural area about an hour and a bit south of Rochester.

Oh cool. I visit upstate NY every summer. My grandparents have a house there.
They live like 15 minutes from Lake George. Not sure where Rochester is

12:57 AM
Finger Lakes area.
Ah, nice.
Lake George is over in the eastern part.

Oh ok, so nowhere near Lake George
New York is big

Rochester's in central/western NY.
But everyone calls anything north of the city "upstate" so I usually just say "upstate."

That's a big area lol

Haha yeah

I like mostly European metal too, now that I'm thinking of it

1:00 AM
also yay Opeth
though again, I'm more fond of their older stuff

I went to Germany to see Opeth

Damnation and Deliverance were pretty great albums.
Nice!

Because I'm too impatient to wait for them to come to the USA
If they ever do

The chat keeps telling me I can't post messages because I'm sending too fast.
I always get all excited when musically nerding out.

It was Progressive Nation 2009; they played with Unexpect (terrible), Bigelf (weird style, pretty fun), and Dream Theater (who I'd already seen in the states but is amazing live anyway)

1:02 AM
I'd love to see Dream Theater live

Unfortunately Portnoy left the band
And it'll be pretty hard to fill his shoes
When Dream Theater started playing Dance of Eternity live I almost died from sheer joy

Yeah :(

Live performances?
Lordi. As in, the band.

Oh hey, you like The Dresden Dolls, I was thinking about checking out their stuff. How are they?

They're completely unlike anything else I've ever heard
It's really hard for normal people to get into
But I think they're amazing

1:04 AM
From what I've heard, I think I'll like them.

I don't even know what it is I like about them; I just know I can keep listening to them forever once I start

I like weird music with odd themes sometimes too though, so.
I've been on a bit of an industrial kick the past couple weeks.

Try out "Half Jack" if you want for the Dresden Dolls. That's my favorite by them

Cool, will do. I know... Coin-Operated Boy by them, and that's it.

I like some industrial stuff, but I don't like Nine Inch Nails so it's kind of hard since everyone else tries to be them

1:07 AM
Ah, how come you don't?

Just doesn't do anything for me. They have a good song or two but for the most part I'm just waiting for it to end

Actually, that particular rendition sounds pretty off-kilter.

I recently found a band called Angelspit which I find really entertaining. I also listen to Skinny Puppy and some Front Line Assembly.

Never heard of any of those bands

1:09 AM
Skinny Puppy and FLA are both off of Nettwerk records, a Canadian label. I like another band on a label a lot too, Delerium, which is kind of ambientish.
(I am really, really terrible at defining genres for music, I usually just look on Wikipedia to see what stuff is called)

I couldn't name a single label if I tried

Try.

Wikipedia is generally good for that but they get a little fine-grained for me
There are too many "somethingcore" genres to keep track of

Nettwerk I think is cool because they release their stuff without DRM and don't support using it.

@GnomeSlice Roadrunner, I guess. So there. Happy?

1:11 AM
I want to see apocalyptica live some time.

DRM is evil

Hell, I want to see anyone live.

If you live in New Jersey they're playing in March
Oh you're in Canada

Yeah, or like the bajillion metal genres. I cannot for the life of me name the differences between black, death, doom, gothic, or whatever else there is.

Never mind. That's a bit of a drive

1:12 AM
@StrixVaria I do not.

I can tell the difference between a lot of metal genres
Doom metal sucks

I just don't care enough to, really. In like, 50 years, everyone's just going to call it "oldies" or something anyway.

That's going to be hilarious
When they're playing Opeth and Nightwish on the "Oldies" station

Do you know Alestorm by the way?

Of course!
Wenches and Mead

1:13 AM
:D

@StrixVaria Sounds like BlackGuard to me...

No one believed me when I told them about pirate metal

Hahaha

@StrixVaria Would you believe Viking Metal?
Crabcore?
Whalecore?

I'm trying to branch out in my musical tastes actually, because I've been mostly focusing on symphonic metal for like the past 8 years.

1:14 AM
Where are you trying to branch to?

So last year I asked a bunch of my friends for recommendations.
I dunno. I just felt like I should expand my horizons a bit.
I've recently started liking a bit of punk/hardcore, which I used to not be able to get into.

So like Rise Against and Ignite and stuff. I think wiki calls it "melodic hardcore."

@FallenAngelEyes A Skylit Drive ?

I saw this band live last year. They're like Mastodon but they're not all assholes.

1:16 AM
@StrixVaria Ever heard of AHAB ?

stupid youtube ads...

Nope

@StrixVaria Whalecore. I kid you not.
Their songs are based on the events surrounding Moby Dick.

Arjen Anthony Lucassen has an album with a "group" (it's just him) called Star One where each song is based off a different science fiction universe
Dune, Star Trek, Star Wars

That sounds familiar.

1:17 AM
Other stuff

Isn't the star wars one really freakin' long?

Star One is great stuff

Stargate is one

But yeah, the desire to branch out is what made me want to check out Dresden Dolls.
Also fell in love with the album Murder Ballads by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Yeah, try out the Dresden Dolls, and if you like them try Emilie Autumn too

1:19 AM
I know I'm going to like her

How's that?

A friend of mine linked me some of her songs and I fell in love.
Just the themes and stuff.

She's a violinist, which is awesome.

Another friend is going to see her Sunday. I've heard that she's phenomenal live.

A lot of her albums have baroque violin songs at the end

1:20 AM
You guys remember Primus?

Les Claypool is a terrible musician
@FallenAngelEyes If you want to get into punk, try Authority Zero

0
Q: Moderator Primary does not Remember if you already Voted

Raven DreamerMinor bug, but I thought I'd report it all the same -- whenever you go to the moderator primary page, the page doesn't remember who you voted for. You can perform another up/down vote, but this second vote isn't counted. e.g., I vote for Tzenes, giving him 1 up vote. Several hours later, I come...

But his videos freaking rock.
That is probably the most frightening music video I've ever seen.

Ok so Les Claypool is an amazing technical bassist, but I can't stand his style.

1:21 AM
But yeah, other stuff I've had recommended to me includes Misfits, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Gorillaz, Rasputina...

Gorillaz only has 2 good songs
Don't know any of those others

Man, that music video is still so amazing.

@Strix: Can they sing? That's my difficulty with getting into punk, I kind of prefer it when the lead singer can actually sing, which is part of why I like Rise Against. Lead singer can sing well and also still do the scream-y bits well.

Oh man punk with a singer who can actually sing
Uh....

Haha, yeah I know...

1:23 AM
Well it's worth trying Authority Zero; they're better than most punk bands

Will do :)

I am personally a huge fan of Welcome to the Black Parade (the album) by My Chemical Romance. That's kind of like a punk/prog/emo mix.

Ah okay, I've never really checked out MCR.
@Gnome: Whoa, this guy's voice reminds me of Claudio from Coheed
holy shit wow high note

Their other albums are a lot worse than that one

1:24 AM
@FallenAngelEyes No kidding.
That IS a man.
Hard to believe, but...yeah.

On the opposite end of the spectrum

I like this a lot, @Gnome, thanks. :) Think I'll check out more of their stuff, if only to hear more of this guy's range, holy fuck.

That is a woman

Arch Enemy has few songs I like.
The woman sounds more like a man than most metal singers that ARE men.
@FallenAngelEyes @StrixVaria if you guys are into the symphonic stuff, then you need to check this out. Blackguard - Scarlet to Snow

holy fuck @ Arch Enemy

1:28 AM
Suspyre is a symphonic band that I know is good but I haven't listened to enough to pick out any songs as examples

It's unfortunate I'm not that into growling vocals

@FallenAngelEyes But you like Opeth?

Haha, yeah I know

Arch Enemy overdoes it, though

Have either of you heard of Insomnium?

1:29 AM
Akerfeldt can sing

But Akerfelt can -really-... yeah
I really like their softer stuff on Damnation
I thought it showcased their range of style really well

the singer for Insomnium really has an unfortunately growly style, but that band has some of the greatest instrumentation and musicianship I've ever heard.
Some of the most melodic metal I've come across.

Children of Bodom wins for melodic metal
melodic death metal, at least

Haha yeah

@StrixVaria Listen to that song before you say that.

1:31 AM
Listening now

I do love Children of Bodom, but Insomnium is just so incredible.

I've found that some people are more sound people and some are more lyrics people when it comes to music. I'm more of a sound person, so lots of growly lyrics aren't really my thing.

I once got really bored and re-created some album art from my favorite albums and came up with this
I guess that's my favorite Opeth album then

Haha nice

I don't even hear lyrics when I listen to music. The voice is just another instrument

1:34 AM
@FallenAngelEyes Me neither, but with Insomnium, I kind of tune it out, the instrumentation is so incredible.

That's why growly vocals don't bother me
I might need to hear more of Insomnium

@Strix: Gotcha, I can see that.

@StrixVaria "Down with the sun" Search it.

@GnomeSlice Queued

Insomnium sounds pretty great sound-wise so far.

1:36 AM
Did you guys check out the Blackguard track I linked in?

Yeah, I liked that sound too. :)

Yeah that was pretty decent too, but you were linking so fast I couldn't listen to the whole thing

I need to write this stuff down.

For reference, there it is again.

Or wait, how do you bookmark conversations?

1:37 AM
There's a bookmark button somewhere

@FallenAngelEyes on the right hand side, click the 'Room' dropdown

@FallenAngelEyes Permalink to the transcript from the first message in the conversation?

There'll be Create New Bookmark option.
Then click first and last message of the bookmarked range

Funny, I made a room for discussing music before, and no one showed up.

Ah, thanks @Lesspop

1:38 AM
and you'll get a nifty permalinkable, renamable, bookmark transcript.

I take it you guys have listened to In Flames, right?

Also, if you want to break out of the Metal ghetto and want to hear a band with not one, but two vocalists so good it's absolutely criminal, TV On The Radio are pretty amazing.
Particularly the early stuff for pure vocal acrobatics. <3 Tunde's voice.

@Gnome: Yar, but a lot of their stuff starts to sound the same for me after a while
@LessPop: Not heard of them :o

@GnomeSlice Is that the band with Trigger?

Yep.
@FallenAngelEyes I know what you mean.

OOH! What about Dark Tranquility?

is a good start.

That's kind of why I gravitate more towards symphonic and prog.

@FallenAngelEyes Prog? Oh boy, gimme a sec.
To be fair, that's probably the least prog-ish of any of their songs.

Ambulance is... not really representative of the bands sound as a whole, but it's just so goddamned good.
i.e., TVOTR are not normally an a capella group at all.
This is a bit more representative.

1:45 AM
Mr Rubber Finger is probably my favourite artist that absolutely nobody knows about.
Every single one of their [well, 10 or so] songs sound completely different.
They did a cover of the Punch-Out! theme, and the Jurassic park theme. Badass.

Ambulance is pretty cool. :o I'll listen to their other one when I'm done listening to this badass Zelda cover.
oooooh Jurassic Park theme?

Also, the Punch-out! theme, and a retro-racing game inspired track.
and a cover of the Pink Panther theme.
These guys are so great. Completely instrumental, every track.

@LessPop: This is really funky

Another good one by them

You guys may not like this one. The vocal style almost breaks the band. But the musicality behind it still saves it.

1:50 AM
ah yeah, I know Dark Tranquillity. Another growly-but-good-musically band.
I like this @Less, really good singers and sort of quasi-electronic-ish almost.
Anywho, I should head sleepwards.
Yay music geekery!

Thanks for the recommendations all. :)

@FallenAngelEyes Not gonna stay up 8 more minutes for Town Hall #2?

The Prodigy - Invaders must die.

Shouldn't stay up for another hour. :(
Hence why I only signed up for the first, 'tis almost 3am now.
Anywho, have a good evening!

1:54 AM
Ciao.
@Strix one more:

@RebeccaChernoff Are you going to be locking the bridge again?

I thought @badp locked it last time

everyone got their questions ready?
and yes, it was badp

1:56 AM
@GraceNote "You" meaning "you people"

Yeah, I locked it to give focus to the THC

@badp what about for those who don't feel the need to go to both sessions?

You mean you aren't interested in what @GraceNote has to say?!!!?!??!?!????!??!?!

@badp She's already got my vote. So no.
Ooooh spoiler alert.
My bad.

@badp You know, this borderline worship probably makes @GraceNote nervous

1:58 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz "Dirty Deeds, Done Dirt Cheap"

or is giving her a goddess complex. One or the other

It doesn't make me nervous. Rather, it baffles me

@CRoss It isn't worship

Also, definitely no deity complex.

@badp fanaticism?

1:59 AM
appreciation? support?

@badp Bah, I guess I'll troll the next session like I did with the first too, then.
I didn't have any constructive input. Q_Q

room mode changed to Gallery: anyone may enter, but only approved users can talk
The Bridge is now locked for the next hour. Please join us for the town hall chat:
