Hmm...
Oh I get it. The most prominent tag gets displayed in the google result?
Hmm. Maybe we DO need tag classes...
Is this only an issue on our site?

No, it's a design feature bromike.

I mean, is the most prominent tag not always the most desirable one on other sites as well?

Depends.
Any sort of site which has superclass tags will suffer more from it.
It technically picks specifically the leftmost tag, then works from there if it is already in the title.
Because tags auto-arrange in order of popularity, this makes the most popular get top priority. But there are some SO questions which predate that change, and won't get auto-arranged until they get revised for any other reason.

I still think tag classes might solve that, but I'm usually wrong about these things.

It would solve that, but also introduce a lot more maintenance into the tagging system than one would really want to have to deal with.

12:11 AM
Arguably if Google makes good on its promise to step up efforts to push down content copiers in search results, the title-tagification might become unnecessary again. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Not really.
This is a new tag. Please specify what type of tag it is
Enter drop-down list.

Enter incorrect data.

Most people would be able to identify if the tag was a 'game name' or 'platform' or something.

You give humanity way too much credit.
6

The few that were done incorrectly could be edited. But that would raise the problem of classing every existing tag.

jaffachiefCould anyone provide some good resources for general Dawn of War 2 strategy for someone who's reasonably new to the multiplayer aspect of the game? @Shaun I'm sure that was by design.

closer = better

I'm going to approach it from the standpoint of completely ignoring and previously-crafted item in the profession.
So, for example, Tigerseye Band would result in recrafting the copper wire, even though technically you would have just done that.
Furthermore, to make it easier on me, I'd have to assume that going back and re-crafting the mat would not result in a skill-up, even though there's usually a small chance of it.
Anything more accurate would essentially be developing an entirely new tool for WoW profession levelers.

You guys have really got this down to a science.

Why is there an anti-Spotify message in the stars?

@ArdaXi Because of the graphic I posted right before the starred statement
1 hour ago, by LessPop_MoreFizz
user image

@LessPop_MoreFizz Where's Grooveshark? Can the figure not be contained in a 64-bit number?
Also, you've got to realise plays != purchases
Let's assume that figure in the graphic is correct (which I doubt, because the payouts differ per publisher)

That means Spotify pays out just as much as iTunes if a user listens to a track 300 times. Couple that with the fact there are lots of songs a Spotify user will listen to, but would never buy, and Spotify does seem more profitable to me.

More on the subject.
> Exec 1: "Our income from iTunes, Beatport, emusic, Amazon etc is pretty good. The income from Spotify is MICROSCOPIC - LAUGHABLE - PATHETIC. The fact that haven't been sufficiently called out on this is a SCANDAL. Spotify are old school monopoly capitalists masquerading as painfully hip young "edgy" entrepreneurs. Their game plan is to devalue music 10 - 20 fold and then swallow it up like Pacman."

7:10 PM
Yeah, I doubt that.

@ArdaXi Very few people listen to a track 300 times.
that's a pretty absurdly high threshhold

If that was true, they wouldn't have signed on in the first place.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Not really.
You've got to realise that that is to equal PURCHASING.
Spotify's strength is that you are paid, even if someone listens to a song they would never buy.

The problem is that the royalty rate is pathetic, even compared to the rates of compulsory liscensing.

Sure, it's pathetic if you compare it to the purchase rate.
You can't compare a per play rate to a per purchase rate.
Unless you have reliable statistics on how often the average bought song is listened to.

Compulsory liscensing has nothing to do with purchasing.

7:14 PM
Yet that is what it is compared to in your graphic.

@ArdaXi Yes, and I'm pointing out that in addition to the graphic, even comparing it to compulsory liscensing is unfavorable. Or even to other streaming services. (which do happen to be in the graphic.)
Last.fm, for instance, pays roughly 2.5 times as much as Spotify per play, and offers users substantially less utility (read, more reason to eventually purchase instead of just streaming.)

I can't comment on Rhapsody, but I think that if you compare the popularity of last.fm's streaming feature to Spotify, you'll find that the latter is quite a bit more popular.
If only because it is more available.

@ArdaXi And this matters to the comparison of artist compensation how?
Keep in mind, artists are paid per-play. There is no flat rate of any sort where an economy of scale should have an impact here.

@LessPop_MoreFizz If the service is less used, there will be more money to divide.
Seeing as last.fm makes money off a lot more than just playing songs.

As for Rhapsody...
Rhapsody is basically exactly like Spotify, except availiable in the US market.

7:19 PM
Except it isn't free.

@ArdaXi correct.

Which means less users, which means more money for less plays.

Did you ever consider that, maybe, just maybe something might be worth paying for?

I pay for Spotify, FYI.
I wasn't intending that as a con to the user, I just meant to remark that if a service isn't free, it has a higher barrier of entry.

Spotify, and it's ilk, are just perpetuating the trend that started with Napster of completely devaluing music as a product that is worth much, if any money to people.

7:21 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz That was your original point. Repeating it is not an argument.

You're basically reinforcing my point for me. "Spotify pays less because it costs it's users less."
Well, if that's the case, maybe there's a reason labels in the US have no interest in making the licensing deals needed to make spotify availiable here.

@LessPop_MoreFizz No, what I meant was that Rhapsody has the ability to pay more because it earns more.
Spotify has more users, and is funded mainly through advertising.

Yes, and I'm saying that if Spotify isn't able to generate the revenue needed to pay artists a fair rate... well, maybe Spotifys business model isn't sufficiently robust for the company to last once all the VC money goes away.

But what constitutes a 'fair rate'?

Keep in mind, the reason Spotify isn't availiable in the US is not legal.

7:24 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Of course it is, but I'm not debating technicalities.

It's that Spotify and the labels have been unable to work out a licensing deal for the content to which both parties can agree.

This is Economy 101, if the supply is high, the price is low.

If those are the sort of rates Spotify pays, and when you compare them to the sort of revenues Spotifys competitors generate...

@LessPop_MoreFizz You shouldn't.

Well, no fucking wonder the labels won't make a deal with Spotify on those terms.
If I'm a record label, why shouldn't I?

7:25 PM
You should be comparing the revenue Spotify generates with the revenue its competitors generate.
Which is price*amount, not just price.

@ArdaXi You mean the revenue that one label exec called "MICROSCOPIC - LAUGHABLE - PATHETIC"
right.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes.

I'm still not seeing how Spotify is a good deal for the musician yet then.
Or for the label.

Seeing as I have no idea what the objective value of "MICROSCOPIC - LAUGHABLE - PATHETIC" is, I cannot draw any conclusions from it, so it's an irrelevant rant.

Or for anyone but Spotify, and the end user.
Okay then, shall we compare it to how much the Radio, which is also free, and which is also ad supported, is paying out to artists?
Because trust me, Spotify looks even worse when you compare it to mechanical liscenses instead of to services like last.fm

7:30 PM
I don't get the problem, anyway.
Labels negotiate their own rates.
Exec 1 decided to get on-board with it himself. At those rates.
Labels have no right to complain.

Right, they do. And my point is that the reason Spotify isn't availiable in the US is because the rates are pathetic. And I kind of hope it never is so long as the rates remain pathetic.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Well, it's kinda hard to care, honestly. If the labels here think it's a good idea, who am I to question them?
Spotify works, and it works well.
That's all I, end-user, care about.

@ArdaXi The real test will be whether said labels renew their deals.

True. We'll see.
I do wonder what you then think of sites like the Hype Machine.

7:48 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz What's the reason nothing but Spotify is available outside the US, then?

@ArdaXi I'm part of the reason the Hype Machine exists, and that's all I'll say on that matter at this time.

(Sure, they all have been swearing for years they're trying to be non-US-only, but that's talk without walk so far. Sometimes I get the feeling that by "outside the US" they really mean Quebec...)

@badp The short answer is that dealing with individual licensing deals on a market by market basis is incredibly difficult bordering on nightmarish, and with the exception of possibly the UK, no individual European market is large enough for them to really expend the money on it.
The UK is somewhat special in that regard, just because Brits are the biggest per capita consumers of music in the world, and it's not even close.
Britain is roughly 10% of the worlds market for music.

8:04 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Spotify pulled it off though.
And they did not start at the UK.

@ArdaXi Indeed, props to them. I never called it impossible.
It's just something that others felt was not a worthwhile investment. Maybe they were/are wrong about that.
But that's the why.

8:09 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Although adding glitches as copy protection payload is a pretty dickish move

@Fabian No it isn't.

@Fabian I think it's worlds less dickish than requiring I be connected to the internet at all times while playing the game.
or any number of other stupid attempts at intrusive copy protection I see elsewhere.

@Fabian I'm not above (below?) piracy, but the publishers are free to do DRM in whatever way they want.

I don't remember which game it was, but they had some delayed mechanism that would make your savegame essentially unusable. But they had a pretty high false-positive rate

@Fabian See, in that case it's a stupid move.

8:11 PM
@Fabian Yeah, the key to any mechanism like this is that it have a low false positive rate.

@LessPop_MoreFizz And the false-positive rate you only find out after you released your game

Also, it shouldn't fuck with your savegames, because the beauty of a delayed mechanism like this is that at this point, you're hooked on the game, and if I go buy it, I want to be able to finish it.

@LessPop_MoreFizz So make a system in which a legal copy revalidates the savegame.

don't answer that.

The Stack Exchange engine draws inspiration from a number of sources.

We continue to be greatly inspired by the success of Wikipedia, but we’ve always missed out on one crucial aspect of Wikipedia: we didn’t allow anonymous users to edit content in our system. No, that requires earning some priviliges through participation — specifically, the retag privilege at 500 reputation and the full editing privilege at 2000 reputation.

Well, as of today, I’m proud to announce that we allow anonymous and new users to edit content in our system! The surface area of this change is huge — it means the millions of drive-by anonymous users that visit our sites every day can submit an improvement or correction to a post or wiki. Furthermore, you can earn up to +1000 reputation (but no more) for submitting valid edits. …

@RebeccaChernoff Who said it would be a joke?

@KevinY "I'll admit - I am a little fast at jumping to conclusions. However, as a moderator, I would be a voice of the community rather than using my moderator powers for my own opinions." Where have I heard that before? :-)

@CRoss, you said -5, so I did the math for you. (:
@LessPopMoreFizz, that's how it came across to me shrugs
@KevinY, can you do a town hall chat Tuesday at 11am?

9:16 PM
Probably not (darn school). :|

@RebeccaChernoff -5, I was confused

Hmm. Wait, did I put 7-9 in my availability on Tuesday?

@CRoss, hm? US Eastern timezone is -5. Now I'm confused.

I just realised I won't be available on Tuesday at all >.<

@ArdaXi you did...

9:18 PM
Well... if I'm lucky I will be home at 8 UTC, but that depends. It might as well be 9.

Q: Is there only one way to get a Birthday Cake?

KatieKI know that I should be able to get a Birthday Cake by using DQVC on my birthday (according to the DS's calendar). Is there any other way?

(They keep changing my roster around, which keeps confusing me)

Unfortunately, weekdays between 7AM and 4PM are basically not free for me.

@ArdaXi So you're not available anywhere in the middle there? Just an hour at the start and a couple in the end?

@RebeccaChernoff How'd you mean?

9:20 PM
Monday 20-21 and Wednesday 17-20, nothing in between?

Maybe Tuesday after 9, but I'm not completely sure.

Alright, let me adjust and see what else is a high match.
Fitting PST and CET gets difficult. (;

I can imagine.

Heh yup.

In a sense, the worse your job is, the better a combination the mods are.
Timezone diversity is key in a good mod team, for around-the-clock coverage.

9:25 PM
A pity we only have 3 moderator slots, it's becoming a pretty tough election.

@KevinY and @CRoss, if you could take a minute to reply to my email I can do my best.

@RebeccaChernoff Replied.

Monday at 8pm UTC or Tuesday 5pm-8pm UTC are the top matches.

Hmm, reading moderation discussion backlog
yesterday, by C. Ross
very true, a lot of people do calm down with responsibility
I wouldn't. Is that good?

9:41 PM
We have such a diverse time zone range for the nominees - perhaps having two Town Hall chats, one favouring North America and then one favouring Europe, would be better.

Monday at 8pm UTC is slightly better as an additional person can attend for half an hour. Does 3pm on Monday work for you @CRoss?

@RebeccaChernoff busy till 3:30 PM (EST)

Oh wow, some people are reversing the Steam protocol, they've already got a WIP stand-alone chat client working on Linux.

@ArdaXi this is surprising how? also, link?

@CRoss It's never been done before.

9:53 PM
lots of protocols have been reversed. hard and simple

Well, yes, but Steam hadn't
And the protocol has existed for quite some time already.

@ArdaXi Since 2003 to be exact.
Well, not exact but to give you an idea of how long it has been.

Q: What portals allow instant transit across continents?

Nick TIn World of Warcraft, what portals are there that allow you to move quickly around the continents searching for dirty rocks, weeds, or old pieces of pottery? e.g.: Twilight Highlands <---> Stormwind (obviously Alliance only)

That is a small question with a very big answer that I am too lazy to write.
I hope someone beats me to it so I don't have to type a whole lot.

10:44 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Man up. Rise to the challenge.
