Task for tomorrow: make some sense out of Dwarf Fortress

@Thomas Should have everything you need. gl hf

user30
@ItakeDrukqs I've spent the best part of the past hour reading through various pages. Too tired to make any sense of it

@ThomasMcDonald The only way to truly 'make sense' out of dwarf fortress is to have copious amounts of Fun.

@Thomas If you haven't already I would familiarize yourself with various games that use ASCII graphics (Roguelikes mostly) and stay away from games that have tiled versions (DF is one of them) until you understand what everything is supposed to be. DF is a very intimidating game as far as glancing at screenshots go but like the gentleman before me here just said it is very fun and it is a must play. I highly recommend looking up games like Rogue, NetHack, IVAN, Elona, DoomRL, etc.
@Thomas Once you have the basic concept down of how roguelikes work (DF isn't exactly a roguelike but it is similar) the readme and all that good stuff of DF will tell you all you need to know to get started and the rest can be answered by the wiki or, of course, here.

user30
@ItakeDrukqs Thanks, I'll have a look in the morning

12:08 AM
@Thomas Correction, stay away from the tiled versions of games themselves. For example if you download NetHack, don't let the ASCII graphics intimidate you and run the tiled graphical version, learn the ASCII. And you're quite welcome, good luck and have fun.

I wonder what the time delay on Feeds is.

Q: Patent Protection

PowerlordThe Engineer achievement Patent Protection is eluding me. The achievement's description is: Destroy an enemy Engineer's sentry gun with a sentry under control of your Wrangler. I've destroyed mini-sentries and regular sentries currently being built with a wrangled Mini-Sentry, but stil...

@Powerlord Check your question.

@ItakeDrukqs OK, but... that doesn't answer the other half. Having taken out a completed mini-sentry with my own wrangled mini-sentry hasn't awarded me with the achievement. I assume either my sentry or their sentry can't be a mini, and I don't know which... or if both need to be normal sentries.

12:24 AM
@Powerlord They have to be normal sentries I'm sure.
@Powerlord I don't play Engineer but the context of the achievement tells us that it would work best with both being normal sentries. It should be easy to get in time and very easy to get by farming with a friend.

I try not to farm achievements if I don't have to.
That reminds me, I need to file a bug report with Valve reminding them that 6 of the classes require a hell of a lot more achievements for their items than the other 3 do.

@Powerlord There's no shame in doing it and Valve doesn't have anything against it whatsoever. You aren't breaking any rules. If you want an achievement enough to ask a question concerning how to acquire it, have a friend help you. If you still want to get it "normally" I would find yourself a lame 2fort server and set up shop in their base.
@Powerlord That's not a bug report. You should probably send an email to Robin Walker instead.
If you have any more questions, especially questions concerning how to play a class or how to use a certain weapon/item/etc. feel free to ask. I've been playing TF since it was a QW mod. I main Soldier and have been playing competitively on and off ever since.

@ItakeDrukqs Yeah, having clocked 1274.36 hours of play time in the game (that's not including any time spent idling for items when that still worked), I'm going to say I have a pretty good grasp on how the items work.

@Powerlord I'm speaking competitively here.
@Powerlord Not like I can tell you how to have fun concerning a public game.
Hahah.
Idling has always worked by the way.
Works in offline practice.

@ItakeDrukqs They capped the number of items you can get per week, though, so there's not much point to it.

12:33 AM
@Powerlord There's plenty of point to it. You said idling flat out didn't work.
If you're taking a break from the game it's still great to be able to idle overnight once a week, wake up the next morning and see what you got.
It creates fairness no matter how often you play, creates more excitement when you get that one item, and balances the economy.
@Powerlord Updated my answer. That should have covered everything you need to know.

I got a Nice Answer off of something I looked up in Wikia, and had to be corrected on twice and have my formatting fixed for me ...
so Thanks @StrixVaria and @badp

@CRoss I had that happen on games I never played as well, like when I started answering Dwarf Fortress questions without having even touched the game.
Also, @CRoss, I fixed the URL in one of your posts. You had linked to nethack.wikia.com

I randomly got the Citizen Patrol badge... the one for flagging your first question/answer... but I don't recall flagging any lately, and find it unlikely that I'd never flagged one before.

4:47 PM
@Powerlord I also got that on another SE site, and I know I didn't flag anything recently

@sjohnston I wonder if I should post something about it on Meta.SO

Citizen Patrol was recently changed to include moderator flags, and applies retroactively. Both of you probably qualify in that regard. But should you still doubt it, you aren't alone in that regard.

@GraceNote I figured it was something like that. I know I've flagged it the past, just not recently.

If I have a feature request that would likely affect all Stack Exchange sites, should I be asking it at the Stack Overflow Meta, or does it not matter?

Well, it'd probably get more visibility on Meta.SO.
And if it applies to all SE sites anyway, yeah, it most likely belongs there.

I thought that might be the case.

@ArdaXi In the last year or two, I've really come to appreciate games like Nethack and Dwarf Fortress, where the rules are ridiculously complex and obfuscated and the primary gameplay mechanic is figuring out what you can actually do.

@sjohnston Same. After playing games like Nethack and Dwarf Fortress, other games just seem way too... simple.

@ArdaXi I wish there was a semi-accurate way to determine what the playerbase of NetHack is, just to satisfy my own curiosity.

@Powerlord Did you hear about the whole Bing ordeal?

@thethinman The Google-Bing thingâ„¢?

Yep
Now that's brave. And stupid.
Prime reason I laugh at anyone who recommends working at Microsoft for the experience.

The crazy thing is that it makes a twisted form of sense.

It is, but also dishonorable and disgusting.
For anyone who doesn't know: searchengineland.com/…

We discussed that a while ago, I think
Apparently, Microsof thinks it's alright because "everyone does it" or something

7:21 PM
@ArdaXi Ha, my bad, not always on chat.

Oh, and I couldn't resist sticking the â„¢ symbol onto the end of Google-Bing thingâ„¢.

@Powerlord I noticed :P
Given how Microsoft was born, I expected no better of them.

@thethinman really?

@tzenes Really what?

you think its a) stupid, b) disgusting?

7:22 PM
@thethinman I'm not sure how writing a BASIC interpreter for the Altair is related to the current topic... ;)

First off, I don't particularly care for bing, but that irrelevant to the topic.

@tzenes Stupid because they were bound to get caught and although I don't know what legal implications that has I'd assume getting caught would instantly make bing not worth it

But on the subject, its both brilliant and the right thing to do

@tzenes It's theft. Plain and simple.

so there are no legal implications
and it is not theft
if you think its theft chances are you don't understand what it is they did

7:23 PM
@tzenes It's theft just as much as piracy is.

which is to say "not at all"?

but they didn't steal search results

@tzenes Disgusting? Because it's a blatant disrespect for another company and intellectual property. It is not their right to have access to that data.

what?

@tzenes They stole the rankings, and as such, the work Google put into their algorithm.

7:23 PM
do you actually know what happened?
@ArdaXi 100% wrong

@tzenes I don't think it's theft, they haven't been sued or anything for it, am i right?

@tzenes So they just happened to have the same result for the same honeypot query a dozen times?

@thethinman So google gives the data away, so they have the right

@ArdaXi They used the links users clicked on after a search.

I thought Google just pointed their finger at Microsoft and Microsoft kind of said "and, what's your point?"

7:24 PM
@ArdaXi you have to remember they used people following that honey pot

@tzenes So just because my TV station airs series every day, I get to upload them to The Pirate Bay?

they didn't steal google rankings
@ArdaXi I think your TV has different licencing than google

Oh, so then I need to hook up a recording device to someone else's TV to get to upload the series to the Pirate Bay?

its the station with the licencing not the actual tv

@tzenes True. The station doesn't own the content they display. Google does.

7:25 PM
I forgot arguing with you is pointless

@tzenes Didn't they just collect which of Google's results that customers liked most?

@thethinman no
what they did was far more brilliant than that
what they did was track users habits on click throughs throughout the entire internet

They had their toolbar capture results that Google user's browsers saw.

it wasn't specific to google

I know, but in effect, this is what they did.

7:26 PM
google was treated like any other site

Basically, it amounts to scraping the entire web.

what they did was examine the relationships between GET requires
which, if you're creating a search engine, is brilliant
not that google doesn't do the exact same thing

While scraping the entire web is fine, it's a Very Bad Ideaâ„¢ to do it with search engines.

google toolbar also captures searching habits
which google uses to inform their search algorithms

Using Google's data ... right? Assuming that data was legally available or they would've been nailed by now.

7:28 PM
@ArdaXi why? it's just another source of data

@Brant Because you're not just using data, you're using your competitor's implementation.
That's like saying copying a document isn't plagiarism because all you did was copy words.
You're not just copying the words, you're copying the order in which they are placed, too.

if they just used googles algorithm their results wouldn't be nearly as good

well, to use the document analogy

what they did is use users qualification of their algorithm

shrug So maybe the ethics were sketchy but was it actually illegal, what Bing did?

7:29 PM
what MS was doing wasn't copying the words, they were copying the ideas expressed by the words. the result of their competitor's implementation, not the implementation itself.

From how it's stated it clearly wasn't Google's intention to let something like this happen.

which means they get far suprior results than just copying google
@Mana no

@Mana it wasn't illegal I don't think.

@thethinman google has done this for a long time

Okay.

7:30 PM
the difference here is that people dislike MS more than Google, so google can point a finger

Oh right, the Google Toolbar.

So then I don't really see why people are getting angry at MS for this. It was a pretty cool idea.

@tzenes Yes, they get better results. But given Google's reaction to what Microsoft did it wasn't their intention to help companies like that.

truth is MS pointed this exact same finger about 7 years ago and no one remembers it

@tzenes Google scrapes Bing for search results?

7:30 PM
@tzenes So yeah, it's Google's fault for letting it happen.

@thethinman I don't see how they could stop it

@ArdaXi Google has the same type tool MS does. It even has a similar name: Google Toolbar vs. Bing Toolbar.

@ArdaXi The __ Toolbar (Bing/Google) watches what page you're on, and then watches what page you visit next

it wasn't like this was MS running queries against Google

@tzenes Make it unavailable.

7:31 PM
@Powerlord @Brant That does not answer my question.

@thethinman what I'm saying is they can't make it unavailable
because MS isn't scraping Google

@tzenes Now that is something I don't get yet. Google made it sound like MS clearly observed some behaviour on Google sites.

MS is asking users for their history
@thethinman Sure they made it sound that way, but that's not the case

@tzenes How do you know that?

that is pure fabrication in the form of implication

7:32 PM
So they browse history, look at what they searched on Google, then look at what they went to next?

Have you folks read this yet, BTW? Bing: Why Google’s Wrong In Its Accusations It's a lot more complicated than "Bing copies Google results"

Are you an engineer at Microsoft?

they implied that this was what IE was doing

@Brant Thanks for the post.

Actually if you look at what the data IE sends back, its no different for google than for any other site
in fact, if you look at other search engines you see the exact same behavior
let's say I take a domain name and map it to a php file which just calls google

7:33 PM
@tzenes Google's test showed a fluctuation in Bing results though, so there must have been a focus on Google, whatever MSes technique was.

but I add a honeypot to my php file
you'll see that honeypot show up
even though there is no way MS is targeting my random computer
@thethinman no, there doesn't have to be a focus on google to produce that result

That would be really, really, really dumb.

I highly recommend you read the article I linked above to get the context, but the key takeaway is "Bing isn’t just monitoring what happens at Google. It monitors what people do as they travel across the entire web." (Emphasis mine)

their just has to be enough people going to the site

@tzenes Hmmmm, let me think then.

7:34 PM
For Bing to blindly accept any kind of title, URL set it is given.
(Which is what it did in the case of the honeypot)

bing accepts all the links that everyone clicks on, creates its relational graph and then weights the edges based on volume

@tzenes So you're saying Google is so widely used that Bing changed because Google influences so much, rather than Bing specifically targeting Google?
4
@tzenes I know I'm being incredibly simple here.

@thethinman YES
that is the crux of it

@tzenes Aha, that's interesting. This seems less one-sided.

Bing changed because so many god damn people are using google, that it causes anomolies in their edge weighting algorithms

7:36 PM
That's what this article says as well

Correlation doesn't imply causation, bitches. Google just took its first lesson in stats.

remember, when google created the honey pots, they didn't just create honey pots, they also had people go home and click through to them on IE

Ah, but see, the crux of the issue is that Google specifically added fake search results for terms that had few or no matches. Then Google's Engineers installed the Bing toolbar, searched for these terms, and followed the links therein.

So I can Bingbomb a link easily with a relatively popular site and Bing toolbar?

No, keep reading the page

7:37 PM
@ArdaXi If it's a common term, it will likely have very little difference.

I think they just used IE

@tzenes hardly any people did that though

The clickstream data the Bing toolbar collects is only one of several signals the search engine uses to rank results, and even then it isn't used all the time if it's not a very common search term

@badp but there were no other queries which contained the text
remember these honeypots where very low occurnces
so a couple hundred clicks from google engineers is likely to heaviliy weight those edges

@tzenes "We gave 20 of our engineers laptops with a fresh install of Microsoft Windows running Internet Explorer 8 with Bing Toolbar installed." -- Google

7:39 PM
they probably do some time averaging, so over time that effect will be deminished

hmm

So, it's not just IE... you needed Bing Toolbar as well.

@Powerlord 20 engineers, a dozen clicks each, we're talking about close to a thousand click throughs
I know IE sends some data back
Its possible Bing doesn't get that data unless you have the toolbar though

Now what about this line, "Google alleges that Bing monitors what people search for on its site, if they have Internet Explorer equipped with certain features. Bing doesn’t dispute this."?
Now that makes the point confusing.

they monitor all clickthroughs
searches are a subset of clickthroughs

7:41 PM
So Bing is saying that they do monitor Google relevant things, but not on purpose. It's just a part of the process? As in they're viewed like any other source and not specifically targeted?
Errr, I don't know if that made sense.

no, I think you have it
they treat google like any other website

Yeah, that's pretty accurate.

Hmmm, that's unfortunate.

It's just that so many searches are Google searches that, yeah, it kind of does flow through.

the fact that google gets such an insane volume of traffic means that some search results are going to get copied over

7:42 PM
If MS did what I originally thought then I would still find them disgusting. But I consider them redeemed

... are we done with this? because it's awesome and I want to bookmark it

@Cross the important parts

@CRoss You mean this convo?
I'd call it done. I brought it up in the first place.

anyway, the entire idea of clickstream data is brilliant, but I think its still unrefined
what you want to do with that data is really look for velocity in click throughs

Clickstream data is likely balanced against their normal web scraping.

7:44 PM
that way you know what the "next big thing" is

Of course, that only applies when the terms actually exist in sites to be scraped.
Aw man, I have a meeting in 15 minutes. I hope I remembered to bring my pillow.

@tzenes So prediction?

@thethinman predictive, sure
not necessarily a prediction

@tzenes Like optimal filtering models and linear regression. That would be neat.
If it works.

well they already do some of that, but to take it to the next level, that'd be exciting

7:46 PM
Stuff barely works for the environment, but that's a very different thing to try it on.

so have you guys voted in the primaries yet?

@badp's twitter avatar looks perfect on [isparade.jp](isparade.jp)

Primaries?

7:49 PM
because I've got my top 4 candidates

I did all my voting.

tricky part will be whittling it down to 3

Stop looking at my election!

Nice typo catch Powerlord.
whistles

@Mana Yes, typo catch... ;)

7:50 PM
:)))))))))))
ANYWAYS.
Yeah. I have a pretty good idea who I want to mod here.

Sup maaaaaaaaaan

@thethinman The ceiling.
Oh, and some SE game organization thingy over here:

 SE Game On!

TF2 server is TF2.stackgaming.com Minecraft server is mine.sta...

maaaaaaaaaaaan.
Games are for dorks. :/

@Mana Choosing took all of 5 seconds for me too.

Well Grace and Ivo are obvious choices, but filling that third slot is tough. A number of good candidates

7:53 PM
arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/02/… <-- I hope I have time to read this after my meeting... sounds like it could be an interesting article.

@tzenes I'm looking for more of Ivo's stuff. I remember him when I first joined.

@tzenes Yeah, the third one's the tough choice for me too, but I think I know who I want to be a mod now. CLIFFHANGER

@thethinman He was an mod on SU for a while. Definitely a solid choice. Someone who knows how to work with a large unruly community

Not to mention 43 answers on meta.

@tzenes I can respect him.
We supposed to talk about our votes here?

7:55 PM
@Mana Will Mana reveal whom they're voting for? Will badp admit his secret to the rest of the world? Did FallenAngelEyes really steal the spotlight from LessPop_MoreFizz in the high school talent competition? You'll find out next time on...The Bridge!

it is very tempting to force badp into that third spot

@thethinman I have no problems with vote discussion personally.

Once the elections close, all the votes are made public anyway.

@tzenes Haha, well then it's Grace, Ivo, Badp

not so fast
we also have Cross and Powerlord to choose from
both have experience being moderators
both active members of the community

7:56 PM
Well, how many votes can I submit here?

oh, as many as you want
the question is, who do you want to win?

In the primaries? One per candidate, up or down. The top 10 move on to the actual election tomorrow.

@tzenes I'm not even sure why you mentioned me. See badp's chart.

@Powerlord You have me trust for answers about gaming questions.

7:57 PM
I'm talking about who makes a good candidate, not how voting in the primaries is going

As it stands, I'll likely squeeze into the finals as the last, lowest scored person (since only 2 people will be booted)

@Powerlord But your meta participation makes me think. Not like meta participation is key here, because I think (personally) that without much experience on meta you can still be a good mod.

Anyway, time for a meeting at which likely nothing will get done. Be back in 5... maybe longer if we actually have something to discuss this time.
