Q: I bought Minecraft, what to do now?

DrakeAfter seeing a huge interest here and in almost every PC gaming site, I decided to buy Minecraft Beta. In twitter and rss I heard something about zombie, ghosts, cakes, spiders, etc. So I started my first single player game and I spawned on a small island. What to do now?

2 hours later…
2:30 AM
@Feeds Why would you buy a game having absolutely no idea what it's about?

2:49 AM
@Gnome Because every gaming site and magazine won't stop yammering about how great it is?

3:16 AM
That's an excellent question
I was about to post a question about "Seriously, what's the point of minecraft anyway" but i couldn't figure out a way to make it not gamerec-y

"what's the point" is a very difficult question to answer for sandboxy games.
There's a lot of stuff you can do, but nothing that you're supposed to do...
Of course, Notch has long said he'd like some sort of overarching goal, but I'm sure that will piss off the Minecraft "purists".

Q: External Mods to locate specific blocks?

Raven DreamerI'm looking for clay blocks, and they are quite hard to find. I know that I could simply edit my inventory and add more clay blocks, but that doesn't quite have the same "fun" factor as setting out in a boat and fighting tooth and nail to wrest every last clay block from the hands of those filthy...

Hm. I didn't do well in EVE for that reason

@SteveV Yeah, I guess Eve is pretty sandboxy for MMOs, although for me Eve felt like there's not a lot of stuff you can do, and nothing that you're supposed to do.

3:35 AM
How is it that the question about 5.1 sound on a PS3 is still open? We can't get two more close votes?

@sjohnston: that's true. I wonder how EVE would change if CCP spawned waves of NPC zerg or something during night cycles like Minecraft

The real trick is figuring out what counts as the night cycle in space

Yeah. How long are the day/night cycles in Minecraft?

3:54 AM

Q: Are the days and nights in Minecraft of equal length?

ChrisFIt might just be subjective, but to me the nights seem to be longer than the days. Barely have I gone outside to collect some sand to make glass, or see if I can find that promising looking cave again when night falls. Even with the watch to show me when it's nearly dawn there doesn't seem to be...

@SteveV @badp's answer to that question explains in detail

deft_codeIn Borderlands, I often see gun descriptions with things like +40% damage. Is this percentage pre-applied when I look at the damage stat? Or do I need to mentally add 40% to listed weapon damage when comparing weapons? How about for rate-of-fire? or reload speed?

Q: Games run way too fast. Setting affinity doesn't work at all. How in the world do I make the game run normal speed?

Joe PeaGames like Day Of Defeat and Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising run way too fast (x2) but even if I change the affinity in the task manager so the games use only one CPU, there is no noticeable change whatsoever and the game continues to be in fast forward and unplayable. Any idea what to do?

Q: Why are my computer graphics twice as fast when i double my computer's ram? It makes games unplayable.

Joe PeaI doubled my computer's ram from 2 gig to 4 gig of 800 mhz ddr. Why would it make Windows 7 desktop animations twice as fast (2x) and all games twice as fast and unplayable??? Is there any way to add my two gigs of memory and not mess up my computing experience???

In Good Subjective, Bad Subjective, we made a pretty solid first stab at defining a constructive subjective question, one that I’ve been happy with so far.

Constructive subjective questions:

But the six guidelines above depend partly on the questions, and partly on the answers. They’re a fine starting point for determining what a good subjective question generally looks like — but I couldn’t fully explain what makes a bad subjective question.

That was before I saw Aarobot’s epic meta answer on poll questions: …

@YiJiang At least she's more coherent than the kitten bot.

@TimStone kittenBot was just for practice :P

Q: How often does Illyriad tick?

C. RossIn Illyriad all the basic resources have an hourly rate, and food consumption is also on an hourly scale. How often and when does this tick actually occur?

@badp That still wouldn't make games run twice as fast
clock speed and what not
anyway, night

maybe he upgraded from a 2004 computer
then it'd be more than twice

Maybe in the first three seconds while they scream fighting relaxation
@ArdaXi That's not a relaxation vault.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh, we did have the Price is Right. It just didn't use that sound.

I don't recall if it did use any sound at all.
We stopped having that program some 15 years ago anyway.

that is a Price is Wrong at best.

This is how small Noctis renders for me.

Kernel Panics are the worst thing.

The panic isn't. Trying to calm them down is.

the Mac OS X Kernel panic screen does such a good job of being imposing and terrifying if you don't know what it is too.

I think that goes for the entirety of the OS.

@LessPop_MoreFizz It's also the least informative

1 min ago, by Arda Xi
I think that goes for the entirety of the OS.

5:16 PM
Sure, Windows floods you with error codes making sure you understand nothing anyway

@ArdaXi I don't think OS X is imposing and terrifying at all... it actually goes out of it's way to be quite the opposite.

Imposing mostly. The terrifying is hidden by not being able to do much terrifiable

@badp Well, in fairness, 99% of OS X users wouldn't be able to use any of the useful information you'd want anyway. And the other 1% know how to pull up the crash log after restarting, and all the information is there at that point.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The 1% being Apple Developers?

@ArdaXi I am not an apple developer, but I know how to pull up the log.

5:19 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz Yes, but how understandable are the logs?

I mean, what use do experts have for Mac OS X really? I appreciate that it is easy to use for most people, but wouldn't experts like the control other OSes give?

@badp Pretty clear.

This is why I wish I could run the thing; having to ask is painful
but noooo, I have to buy the computer to go with it :/

@ArdaXi I have lots of control with OS X. I can pull up a terminal, and could do anything you could do with a BSD machine.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Except you have access to 1% of the tools.

5:20 PM
and I can also run nice commercial software like wow or MS Office without jumping through hoops.

well, yes, a Windows user can't really understand how awesome the terminal is.
because the Windows terminal sucks ass.

@ArdaXi How so?

@LessPop_MoreFizz If you look at it objectively, Windows and Linux both have much more software developed just for those OSes.

@ArdaXi More software is an irrelevant distinction if the majority of it is redundant.
I don't need 10 spreadsheet apps. I just need one that works.

Fair enough, but I do prefer certain software to other.

5:22 PM
Also, just about anything that can run on Linux can be made to run on OS X. Like I said, it's just BSD

Linux isn't...

Linux isn't BSD I know
But most Unixes are close enough that there is very little lack of interoperability with some work.
and anyway, part of the reason that none of that stuff gets ported is because for the most part, most mac users don't want it. Our native stuff is generally better. Stuff that people want, does.
See: GIMP.

Except, you know, when you use a whole bunch of native APIs to abstract (read: differentiate) as much as possible.

@ArdaXi I think Linux software can run on OS X; just have to install the dependencies

It doesn't work like that.

5:27 PM
which means the inverse would also hold, except you can't install the dependencies.
@LessPop_MoreFizz meh, Gimp isn't as bad as people draw it.
also it took Apple a few years to "port" (= reinvent) apt ;)

@badp No, I'm saying GIMP is good enough that it's been heavily ported to OS X.
as in, stuff people want, like GIMP, does get the heavy lifting done to get ported well.

@badp The app store is Apple's version of apt? Eww.

A Day in the Future: http://goo.gl/cXZpp

Although I personally dislike it. But that has more to do with my having various Photoshop tools and shortcuts ingrained in my brain.

@ArdaXi apt or whatever backend they actually use

5:30 PM
@badp Eww eww eww. How dare they tarnish the sacred APT?

@ArdaXi meh, for all I know it could be yum or rpm or whatever

Cydia is based on apt though.

as I said I don't own the thing so I can only guess
it's like when mods ask me how can they turn answers into comments
(now that somebody else leaked the screenshot I know too, but jeez)

Huh.
STOP CONFUSING ME

What a freaking waste of time.
I'd been trying to find a font on the web for about an hour.
My father came by, and got a general idea of the name, went upstairs and searched it and came back down with a copy of it in like 2 minutes.
FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

5:36 PM
@GnomeSlice A legal copy? Otherwise that was impressive fast.

hey, I didn't realize there were so many people here that were also on twitter

@badp I hope so. I found a bunch of sketchy looking sites trying to sell it for seemingly exorbitant prices, but it was a system font on the computers at my highschool.

@brantb I am.

5:40 PM
Cool update tweet.

@badp I demand a slice!

I don't mean to reopen the Linux vs Mac debate, but where I work we're allowed to use either as a dev environment pretty much natively

Macs suck and that's really all there is to say on that. (I have never used a Mac)

Q: Reversi Game For iOS That's Has Multiplayer like Words With Friends

DougI was looking for a reversi/othello iPhone game that supports multiplayer like Words With Friends does. IE I can load up the app, play, then my friend can play their turn later. We don't both have to be logged into some real time server.

the biggest problem we have with macs is corporate security is hard to install
because its all 3rd party

5:42 PM
@tzenes Yeah, this is really one of the biggest legitimate knocks.

@tzenes At Google you're allowed to use both, but not Windows.

ultimately if you're good enough to install linux packages from source, or re-package them, there is nothing you can't get running on a Mac with minimal work

@tzenes And this is a bad thing?

@ArdaXi If you're a company, then yes
remember if it doesn't come native then you have to hire people to do it for you

@tzenes Depends on what kind of company.

5:43 PM
On a side note, one of the pages I visited in my font search had a really amusing set of ads on it.

I can't think of any corporate environment which doesn't require some level of security

I'm not quite sure what's with the theme.

perhaps a start-up

I thought Mac were rather horrible at security really, with security flaws in the closed source components that took ages to fix.

@tzenes Depends on what you mean by corporate security

5:44 PM
@badp they're pretty bad
@arda security required for a corporate enivonment

Security is a moot argument because the CIA/NSA has backdoors into everything anyway. dons tinfoil hat

@tzenes Such as?

Encryption, networking, deployment
you know all those things companies need to make sure their stuff is safe

Seems superfluous. If you do it properly, your employees should make sure the data stays safe.

Wait what?

5:46 PM
If you can't trust them to that, you really can't trust them with the data itself, can you?

@ArdaXi You mean your employees at accounting that always open all attachments?

you want the employees to spend time figuring out what is safe and what is not?

CUTEBUNNY.JPG .EXE

that's what you have a security department for

@tzenes I'm fairly sure that's what companies like Google do, yes.

5:47 PM
that's like saying: we don't need cops, people should just stop bad guys

Imagine that on Linux...

@ArdaXi I can tell you it is not what google does
Google has very very high security

You can't compare A/V with police, really.
At least the police has a margin of success.

this isn't antivirus
you're not trying to stop people from uploading shazer

@badp was discussing AV

5:48 PM
but I made the police comparison
the goal is to stop corporate espionage

Any kind of 'security software' is superfluous really. I can easily write a worm to bypass any AV.

@badp Mac Security can be summed up as: Fewer vulnerabilities (but still plenty), dramatically fewer actual exploits in the wild, but substantially worse patching/repair of aforementioned vulnerabilities (relative to other OS's that is).

The vulnerability is the user. It always has been.

To see the bunny, open a terminal and download this package:

    wget omg.pwnpwnies.com/cutest/bunnies.tgz
    tar xfgv --whatevr bunnies.tgz
    cd bunnies
    ./make

If you get errors ensure all the dependencies are installed!

    ./bunnies

@arda I'm not sure you really know what you're talking about

5:49 PM
(yes, I've never untarred anything from the terminal, so I must have got that command wrong. sue me.)

tar -xvvfj

@tzenes I've done a few white hat hacking attempts (yes, script kiddie stuff) and it always succeeded because of the human factor.
@tzenes xvvzf
it's not bzip, it's gzip

Have you ever tried to hit a coporate net

Basically, Apples shit is less broken than a lot of the alternatives, but it still isn't perfect, and they're pretty bad at fixing what is broke.

yeah, I wasn't really looking

5:51 PM
@tzenes Well, no, I've never been given permission. I got into the documents of the headmaster of my school though. ActiveDirectory set-up.

@arda try to gain access to a network in any major company

Which was actually done by a professional IT team, responsible for a couple dozen schools.

a school usually has no security

So I'm fairly sure it counts as a major company.

no, it does not

5:51 PM
Ours does.

do they encrypt their harddrives?
do you require an RSA key just to get on their network?

2 messages moved to Die2Nite

I'm not really expected to know that kind of thing.

well, if they did, you'd know immediately

Darn, I forgot to migrate the obligatory wrong message from @LessPopMoreFizz

5:52 PM
you can't get data off an encrypted harddrive without the cypher
and RSA keys update every ~30 seconds

@tzenes Well, you can, but let's not get technical.

depending on implimentation
@ArdaXi no, they use one time cyphers

That system has its weaknesses, but most hackers aren't interested in hacking the technical system, much too complicated.

it's much easier to bribe the data or trick the user than crack the cypher; that's the point of any self respecting security system anyway

@badp sure

5:53 PM
Why bother trying to crack the password, if you could just ask the user nicely?

but the vast majority of the attempts on our network aren't in person
they're over the internet

You can ask nicely over the internet too.

yeah, well, that's because of little bobby tables and friends that make it easy to just get in.

an average day involves several thousand attacks on our network

Ah, yes, but that's boring. I mean, they've failed the moment you know about them.
If you seriously want to get into a system undetected, you can.

here is the thing, they don't all fail

About 30% of the attacks on the Pentagon, done by their white hat team, succeeds unnoticed.

the reason we take this level of security is because some make it through

I'm sure the Pentagon white team has to maintain a ton of legacy software they'd love to get rid of but can't to be fair
and that old stuff will be a security rigmarole

Well, still, it's kind of the holy grail of hacking.

how is that the holy grail of hacking?
wouldn't the holy grail be a P=NP proof?

No... I mean more the script kiddie kind of hacking

wouldn't, real hacking skills be the holy grail for script kiddies?

The easiest things to exploit in order to get into a system are the user themselves and configuration errors.

2011 is starting off with a bang! I’m excited to announce that Nick Larsen has joined the Stack Overflow team in our NYC headquarters.

Nick relocated from Atlanta, GA with his lovely wife Mary Paige, a graphic designer, and their rescued dachshund Maddy, a nap enthusiast. They’re settling into their new apartment on the Upper East Side conveniently located near the “small dog” park and a tequila bar. As if this isn’t enough to keep him busy, Nick also builds and launches high power rockets. …

@tzenes No, they think they are actual hackers.

so I see
