Making money with inscription is generally a matter of just constantly relisting your glyphs and undercutting the lowest guy...the material costs are pretty low so you just gotta go on volume

FFXI is several years older than WoW, but it wasn't until the WoW playerbase started to create all the really cool out-of-game tools like TUJ that similar things for FFXI started popping up.
Interface modification (although for FFXI it's more like interface hacking) became more sophisticated as well

Yeah. I can only really speculate why it happened...I don't think it was because the playerbase hit a certain size; it actually took a hit when WoW was released. (along with pretty much every other MMO at the time, I guess)
My guess is people saw the neat stuff the WoW players had and thought "Hmm, let's try that here"
It's affected other MMOs that came out post-WoW, too. I remember when warhammer online came out people were asking about whether it supported interface mods/addons
So there's some expectation for that now, at least among certain people.
I never actually played MMOs at the time, I had an ancient computer. So I just lurked on sites like waterthread and... whatever lum's site was called then
A funny side-effect of that was that when I did start playing MMOs (at least the diku-derivative kind), I was already pre-jaded from reading so many burnout threads

Can I suggest that some of the message feeds be changed to ticker feeds?
Maybe keep Meta.Gaming.SE because new posts there are so infrequent...But the only things that need to be message feeds are things that should actually be recorded in the room transcript.
Anyone who wants to read the backlog of new questions on the site can just go to the site, and anyone who wants to hang out in here and monitor new questions as they arrive can be equally served by a ticker feed.
