Q: Determining if a game is CPU- or GPU-limited

FabianWhat is a reliable, but not too time-consuming way to determine if a certain game is limited by the graphics card or by the processor speed? I have some preconceptions about whether I'm mostly GPU or CPU limited, but I'd like too verify if I'm right about that. I have some ideas how I would go a...

alexanderpasOkay, I've did some testing, and, it really doesn't matter much how you use it, as using a "pumping motion" (leaving a slight delay between each usage) or "pressing it as fast as you can" give both a direct boost to maximum speed, the item has a fixed usage time, and you can't double up on the bo...

Hey, is that DF game totally dead? Because I was thinking of taking a go.

@WillfulWizard give me a question with a bounty, and I go that extra mile! (as @badp knows :D)

I find this game rec question very exciting. It finally feels like the various scattered arguments and debates have been condensed down into a useful form. Like we might actually accomplish some kind of useful decision making.
Even if it is an imperfect process that we've never tried before.

@Macha I get the feeling we left DF a bit in favor of MC, also the chat moves may have influenced it. (not to mention the average gamers attention-span)

@alexanderpas Yeah, that's what I was thought

Yes, it feels like we're debating in real terms rather than might bes, and voting on what simple plan should be enacted. I'm not sure I've explained it correctly but there's definitely something different about this discussion, feels like it might actually produce results.

7:56 PM
@alexanderpas It is interesting, I've noticed those game fads among the more frequent users

I'm recording my own DF game atm, and I need to edit and voiceover that video so I don't want to play too fast or I'd have too much work to do to ever do it, so I was looking for another one to play in the meantime :P

Those game fads sort of serve as my game rec. Once a game I've never heard of reaches a certain mass of questions on the site, I decide to check it out

Q: Does the Venture actually exist?

CortIn Wing Commander 1, the Claw Marks (the official manual, written in-character) mentions a Terran corvette class called Venture. In the years I've played WC1, I have never encountered one in a single mission and it has thus become a great mystery to me and the people I played it with, whether the...

Chat seems to be moving to Die2Nite from Minecraft a bit tbh, but I don't see the point of Die2Nite. Just another of several generic browser MMOs.

I found (and enjoyed) dwarf fortress, minecraft and nethack in this way
yeah, d2n is the latest craze :)

7:58 PM
@Macha /me agrees minecraft is a perm for me.

I didn't bother with nethack, as I was only just after getting Minecraft at that point :P

Hi! Could someone please remove the 'flight-sim' tag from gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/12012/… and tag it "wing-commander wing-commander-1"?

Yeah, I'm going back to DF instead, for now. Still playing minecraft, but I played loads of it this week with my brother and I need some variety.

@hheimbuerger sure
@everyone when it comes to series tags, do we typically do X, or X-series?

@Macha if you can find the latest save, i bet someway mods can re-activate that room ;)

8:01 PM
Thanks.

@alexanderpas Not much point if no one else is still interested in DF though, which is why I asked first.

@sjohnston X-series and I don't believe the series tag is needed here :D

Would wing-commander-series even fit?

yeah, upon reading the question, I agree

@Macha you might re-spark intrest :D (and it's always fun to read)
@FallenAngelEyes it would fit, it's only 21

8:04 PM
@Macha d2n is zombie survival farmville. What's not to like?

The farmville part :P

The question is very WC1-specific. I do like the "wing-commander" tag however because it allows you to search for all questions around the series (I'd say most people who have played WC1 have also played WC2 and SM1 and SM2 and SO1, etc.) and you add it to your favourite tags.

I'm sure we're not done with Minecraft. Interest peaks again whenever there is a big update, and now that Notch has help and a real development process, updates are likely to come out faster.

@hheimbuerger no need for that, you can always add [wing-commander] and [wing-commander-*]

though Minecraft get's waaaaaaaaaaay more questions on their own forums, too bad we can't steal some of it's official thunder :P

8:06 PM
I have started to get away from Minecraft simply because when I do play, I get sucked in for waaaaay too long. As fun as it is, it absorbs way too much of my time

@sjohnston farmville... do I need to say more.

There doesn't seem to be a general consensus about adding series or not adding it to our tagging. For example, we have [sonic-the-hedgehog] as the series label but not [sonic-the-hedgehog-series], yet we have [fallout-series] and [mass-effect-series]

@alexanderpas :) I understand that sentiment. I think there is potential for interesting dynamics around that sort of real-time gameplay though. d2n also has some interesting group dynamics that are only just beginning to be explored

@alexanderpas: That was my suggestion, wasn't it? @sjohnston only added wing-commander, though. :)

I question how useful the series tag is, when the question pertains only to the one game. However, if someone feels it worthwhile, go ahead and add the series tag too.

8:12 PM
@FallenAngelEyes those are questions that ask about the series, and not a specific game or the relation between a specific game and the series. (at least in the [fallout-series] case)
but let me search meta.

has chat always shown combined rep? I never noticed my number was different here than gaming...

Q: Where do you ask your question when you don’t know where to ask?

MPelletierWith the myriad sites of the Stack Exchange network, it will become increasingly likely that many questions will end up in the wrong place and, depending, be ignored or moved. 8:19 PM
You can always do the 'artificial' xxx-1.

@hheimbuerger We've decided to add no -1 for first games in the series and instead add -series for games about the series.
So you'd have portal, portal-2 and portal-series, e.g.
The problem is that for new games you can't know if there will ever be a -2.

Way too long, considering the tag length limits, though. (But I know your answer to that...)

we've asked for longer limits too, but that was declined

and allow you to search for [*-series] too :D

Alternative solution: allow searching for e.g. "[wing-commander*]". (Yes, not gonna happen either.)

8:21 PM
@hheimbuerger too bad * means one or more, so you need to search for [wing-commande*]

well, you can search for "wing commander" (no quotes)

@badp yeah okay, I see the problem with retroactive -1s
@badp Yes, try doing that. The results are horrible.

I guess the problem is there aren't any posts with both words :)
@alexanderpas hm, doesn't * match the empty string?

wait, is wildcard tag search broken?

@alexanderpas I'm not sure it ever worked tbh

8:24 PM
Wow, you're right, looks like it works.

You can search tags on the Tags page though.

Ah no, it doesn't. It just gives really misleading results.

@hheimbuerger If you're @-replying me, no it doesn't

Man, OnLive is good to their beta users. I got a free mini-console, two free games, and now I get to try out the new subscription service (sans the subscription fee).

Nevermind the NFS tags are a mess currently.

Q: How to tag the Need for Speed games?

badpWe currently have: nfsmw ×6 need-for-speed-world ×3 need-for-speed-hp ×2 need-for-speed-mw ×2 I think this makes it self evident that we should rather tag our games: nfs-most-wanted nfs-world nfs-hot-pursuit Thoughts?

8:26 PM
@badp Interesting, what do you enter to get that?
Or just URL-tweaking?

@hheimbuerger I have `need-for-speed-*`in my interesting tags list (which does accept wildcards). I clicked on it and it brought me to that URL.
It's quite hidden, yes. I just found about it.

@sjohnston sound like the regular unpaid beta-tester deal... expect to pay when it releases!

@alexanderpas for sure

@badp Huh. So wildcards work for favourited tags, but not for search? Strange.

@alexanderpas They really need to broaden their total library fast if the subscription is going to be a worthwhile option.

8:28 PM
@hheimbuerger I think favourite tag highlighting mainly happens via Javascript.
Although some server-side favourite tag processing does happen in the Unanswered questions page.

@sjohnston they probaly will, usually, beta testers get a limited selection, specifically chosen to test certain aspects of the product.

(that doesn't mean the difference is a good idea.)

@badp I call it a bad idea... confusing users.

@alexanderpas Honestly, we're kinda abusing the tag system. Jeff vehemently disagreed on game tagging and would rather see the game name in the question title.

Which is rubbish. Should we not tag questions about libraries with the name of their library?

8:34 PM
That said... people on SO do tag their questions python or c so I don't really see the difference.
It appears we're the only site with this problem currently, at any rate.

By that logic we should abolish [django], [asp.net-mvc] etc

@badp that's a different point in case, usage and code are different.

We don't have a lot of examples of other things we can consistently tag with. Game name is the one obvious choice. In my experience, it has been quite useful for searches and sorting favorites, which seem like the primary use cases to me

Genres maybe, but they're too broad to be the only tag

@sjohnston also, Xbox style controllers... my memory is mapped to nintendo buttons.

8:37 PM
@alexanderpas You can use any USB controller
@alexanderpas There is also the fact that games must have special hooks to work with the OnLive remote server system, which will hamper their selection until they can convince developers that it's worth that extra little investment

@sjohnston DRM, 'nuff said

@alexanderpas That'll convince publishers, not developers.

@Macha and users hate DRM even more than publishers love it

And publishers don't create games. It'll give the OnLive games a slightly easier time, but it won't bring about more.

Lock-in is one of the biggest downsides of OnLive

8:40 PM
@sjohnston Windows Lock-in, Steam Lock-in, PSN Lock-in... I don't see a new problem.

Although Steam has proven that it can work
windows lock-in?

@sjohnston those games that won't like wine ;)

Which games?
Steam games? Oh yes they do.

That's hit and miss. The developers didn't decide "We will make sure this does not work on wine"

8:46 PM
@Macha just wait for the game that needs a physical key fob.

Why would they do so? What benefit does it give them? AC2's PC DRM hurt them enough.

@Macha I indeed expect Ubisoft to do it (Settlers 7 shows they didn't learn from AC2)

Settlers 7 showed they were hoping it'd blow over and people would get used to it.

@Macha no, because if that was the case, they would've used better servers.
Remember the Half-Life 2 Fiasco with Steam? Valve learned from it.

what fiasco?

8:52 PM
Steam servers crashed on launch day, people couldn't play

Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by the Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses. Steam also has community features, automated game updates, and in-game voice and chat functionality. As of 2010, there are over 1,200 games available through Steam, and over 30 million active user accounts. Although Valve never releases sales figures, Steam is estimated to have a 70% share of the digital distribution market for video game...

"70% share of the digital distribution market for video game" I believe that about as much as when Google claims not to be a search monopoly.

@Macha it was one of the competitors that made that estimation, and it is an estimation of actual dollars generated/month

You think it's less than 70%?

More

9:03 PM
Yeah, okay.

I'd guess Steam: 80%, D2D: 10%, GFWL: 5%, everyone else: 5%
And that's being generous to D2D and GFWL

Stardock thinks Impulse has 10%

I find that hilarious

I guess it depends a lot on your peers. For example, I've never heard of anyone using D2D or GFWL, but I know of a few Impulse and GOG customers.

10% is closer to the amount of gamers who have heard of Impluse than the numbers using it.

9:07 PM
Quick poll: is Borderlands incredibly resource-demanding?
It works somewhat okay at 800x600 with every setting on the minimum, on the box I usually run e.g. L4D1/2 on 1920x1200 on medium details on.

Borderlands system requirements

1GB system RAM
2.4 GHz Pentium 4 Processor
NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GS
ATI Radeon HD3000 Series
DVD-ROM drive
8 GB of hard disk space
Left4Dead system requirements

3.0 GHz Pentium 4, 2.0 GHz Dual Core, or AMD64X2 processor,
1 GB RAM,
128 MB DirectX 9.0 graphics card,
Pixel Shader 2.0 support,
DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card,
yay wikipedia

like official system requirements are worth anything :)
2

looking at this, i would say, L4D is less graphical intensive.

More CPU intensive maybe, or else Valve or just being more realists.
Compared to say the official Windows Vista requirements, which are, uhh, highly optimistic.

like official system requirements are worth anything :)

9:14 PM
The fact that MS claimed Vista would run acceptably on 1GB of RAM is probably responsible for half of the complaints from when it was new.

@Macha I would expect that with the AI director.

@alexanderpas Actually the AI director isn't that CPU expensive... I think.

@Macha Absolutely

on the server, if anything.
probably not even noticably there

Everyone wanted Vista to do Vista things on XP hardware

9:17 PM
@badp it's making real-time "intelligent" decisions, you have to at least a little to factor in for that

@CRoss Well, everyone still always wants to be administrator on their own machines.
MS still has some work to do on that.

you have to admit that the OEMs had poor driver support with Vista too

@CRoss that was just because the Vista hardware was only availble in the stores.... remember... "Windows Vista Compatible" & "Windows Vista Ready" & "Made for Windows Vista"
@IvoFlipse I call that he fault of microsoft: not giving OEM proper documentation and proper time.

@IvoFlipse The drivel model was changed too, so it's not entirely their fault.
That said, Vista was a painful but necessary step for Windows.
UAC alone is awesome.

I'm quite sure OEMs were just sloppy
and tried to sell older models with Vista

9:23 PM
@IvoFlipse they had to, to get the lowest price for vista, selling XP besides vista meant they had to pay more for both XP and vista!
not to mention the cut-off dates "you can't sell this anymore after" biggest example: google.com/…

I'm not saying Microsoft didn't make mistakes (for instance by putting OEMs under too much pressure)
but the OEMs just tried to cash in over the backs of millions of users

Q: Are questions about games that won't start wanted here?

NifleWe have a question over on Super User about why a game doesn't start. I suggested he try here instead as SU has a no game-questions policy. But the another user wondered if questions like that are welcome here. So could you have a look at it and tell if questions like that are welcome?

Q: hardware questions?

PulseHow should questions related to gaming hardware be handled?

@hheimbuerger Let me see if I can find a good place on meta to get that info into the FAQ...
hmm... I'm not sure how it could be added in a useful way. those basically fall under what's already mentioned.

@hheimbuerger Area51 says they're on-topic, I tend to disagree
er

@badp Excellent. We'll need a new policy debate to fill the vacuum left by game-rec
2

I'm looking at the question list for Area51 and it isn't even there

Meta general feeling seems to be they're on-topic, but only when directly gaming.

10:06 PM
well, guess I'll hold back then
I personally think they absolutely belong on SU (or maybe Linux/Ubuntu in some cases), but I can't earn enough rep to downvote Jeff on everything I disagree on with him. ;)
3

@hheimbuerger No, I think you should ask it. Meta is actually VERY clear on this, On-topic when related DIRECTLY to gaming.
Thanks @Alexanderpas for the links

@hheimbuerger I gladly spend all my rep on that.

well, consider the following:
A popular game gets patched and won't start for 10% of players, but can be solved by deleting some special file they screwed up. Forums or someone figure this out and spread the word. Someone asks here and on SU. Which population is more likely to have read/know about the fix?
Its scope is a problem with that ONE game.

@WillfulWizard Google
:P

@WillfulWizard gaming related = not allowed on SU - question asked here will be answered.

@badp Why yes, the SE engine is optimized to serve the answer up to Google. I'm so glad we can do that for them. :P

OT: Brilliant! :D "Troubleshooting also really isn't what we do. Our website is about Q&A, not Q&A&Q&A&Q&A&Q&A&Q&A." - badp on meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/1046/…

10:14 PM
It was actually Q&A&A&A&A&A about list questions (game-rec)

Then all the credit to you. A brilliant summary of the situation at any rate. :)

@hheimbuerger You know, that's not a bad basis for what's on/off topic. If a tech support really is Q&A, (and gaming...) then its on topic. But if its "my game won't run. WAAAA" then it becomes Q&A&Q&A&Q&A... that's outside our scope. I like it.

Q: Metoid Prime Trilogy freezes when starting Metroid Prime 3

10:21 PM
I don't know. I see your point about more specific problems which only other gamers may know about. But then again, it kinda dilutes the topic of the SE. Answering these questions requires a different approach and doesn't really have much to do with gaming. Plus gamers just might not be interested in technical problems they don't have themselves (like me).
Ergo: SU. But whatever.

gaming on SU = no-go!
and another game freeze example:

@ArdaXi link or it didn't happen! I totally recall myself thinking about it independently.

Q: Super Paper Mario freezes in world 2-2

alexanderpasWhenever I talk to Mimi in world 2-2 of Super Paper Mario my Wii freezes. Do I have a bad disk, or is it my Wii? (actually, i can talk to her once, but if i try again, the freeze happens)

@hheimbuerger So, we are probably most likely to be able to answer these. They are not answerable on SU (as they'll get closed). These two things, however, do not make an airtight case for their validity on the site.

@sjohnston That's pretty much artificial to be honest (the SU bit).

10:25 PM
@badp As do I.

@badp what do you mean, artificial?

"They will get closed where they actually belong" is a pretty weak argument for accepting them on Gaming. ;)

@sjohnston SU is "anything with a question mark that happens to be done with a computer" pretty much :P

But meh, I don't really want to get into that part of your politics...

as long as it's not gaming :P

10:26 PM
@IvoFlipse troubleshooting games is no game, it's troubleshooting.

I recall seeing at least one gaming-related tech support question migrated here from SU

@badp Oh. I only have other people's descriptions to go on. I've never been active there.

we banned those, as there's so many problems you can have that it would flood the site with all these slight variations

I'm just taking Arda's main complaint from that epic discussion and transposing it for my advantage, sue me :P

well I'm a mod there @sjohnston, so you can go on me

wow, @GraceNote has come out of hiding ♫

Yay for phantom mail.

Hm...

only 7 rep left for 5K

I am going to end up getting very very very very angry about comments on that Accessibility answer if they keep moving in the direction they've been headed.

@GraceNote You really think hardware/tech questions will be a problem? It seemed to me and everyone but badp that meta solved that already.

I didn't think they would be a problem. That's why I was going to suggest increased leniency.

@LessPop_MoreFizz I've been very concerned about the exchange myself

@GraceNote Yeah, the flat out offensive remark has been removed, but the attitude clearly remains.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Full disclosure, I flagged it myself.

I'd never wanted a downvote button for a comment so badly before.

I reread your comment and all makes sense now. I doubt you'll have that big of a problem.

I did wait for it to accumulate more flags, though.

I mean, if we decide that treating questions re: Accessibility and reccomendations tailored to specific accessibility concerns is too much trouble, that's one thing, and while I don't agree, I can stand behind the decision. But trying to argue as he is that there isn't a specific domain of knowledge there or that there aren't special needs that need to be addressed - or worse yet, comparing it to having a shitty PC is just offensive.
and I do think @tzenes misses the problem of accessibility in attempting to reject our ability to assist with more 'educational' tools.
We as a community should be perfectly capable of saying, for example, that Borderlands is an absolute nightmare for the color blind.

Ima pick up some dinner, then I'll be back

(It's use of Red and Green UI elements with no other visual distinction except color to represent different states is Really Really Bad. Especially given the lack of a UI toggle to switch to a more color-blind friendly schema).

link! it feels like 'm missing something here.

A: What should be done with questions asking for game recommendations?

ChrisFWhile I agree with @badp in general there are some cases where I think a game recommendation question is OK. The ones that spring to mind are requests for games that can be played by people with disabilities either physical (visual or motor control issues), or behavioural. In these cases it's n...

Q: Marine blob micro in SC2

Dat ChuIn replays, I see Terran players using Marine blobs to have the marine move a bit then attack then move a bit then attack then move a bit then attack. What is the reason for doing this micro? Is there other micro moves for Terran infantry?

11:52 PM
@tzenes, seems like you missed a SC2 question :D

Hey, @Strix

He'll get around to it no doubt. And with accompanying youtube videos and quotes from pros

okay everyone, now all together:

Open question: how can one express concern over perspective over one's situation without seeming like some sort of pompous jerk?

Hello @GraceNote!

11:54 PM
you can't

I was afraid of that (and Hi again, @alex)

@GraceNote The trick isn't to not seem like a pompous jerk, the trick is to make it clear that you have the right to be a pompous jerk in the particular context.
See: me when people start flapping their gums inaccurately about copyrights and piracy.

But... I doubt that I have a right to be a pompous and self-absorbed jerk here.
Otherwise, among other things, I wouldn't feel worried about that perception. Which in itself feels like I'm being a pompous, self-absorbed jerk.

Q: Considering recommendation requests are arguably out of place on Gaming, where should I ask them?

LazloI'm looking for a very specific genre of game, that should yield no more than 2-3 recommendations, and yet, that would be great. However, considering the debate on game recommendation questions, which tends to prohibit them so far, I'm left wondering where would be an appropriate place on the w...

Sounds like you need an injection of Confidence. And/or need to reconsider your position then.
