Q: 90s pc game. cant think of name

jamieI remember playing a game that you had to make it through a building and would run into aliens or plants.a computer named VAL gave you advice on where to go. There were potions as well. And I remember you could open doors that lead you into an abyss you could sometimes jump over.

So, somebody mind giving me a summary of what's the thinking behind closing the poll?
Before those four close votes of yours expire and anybody gets "disenfranchised"

@badp I think that the policy of removing the highest rate pro-game-rec option was a really bad move. I agree that that option isn't viable (though I don't think any game-rec is), but I don't think my opinion (or Bruce's) should take away from the 66 people who did think it was viable.

15 hours ago, by tzenes
@Oak so we can now ignore answers, but not the whole poll? Then I have a simple solution: let's just ignore every answer and decide the poll hasn't decided anything

@Ivo I think I was being flippant there

flippant? nevermind I googled it

8:36 AM
@tzenes It's obvious it was going to attract the most votes, because it's the policy that changes nothing

that the problem discussing with you @tzenes, you never know whether you're just in it for the fun or dead serious about it

@Ivo sorry, I'll try to be clearer

What makes you think that, if we re-ran the poll again in whatever other way, somebody else won't try and push the non-option again?

@badp regardless throwing away those people's votes now is tantamount to rigging the vote

8:37 AM
@badp It's the "Everyone wins and I don't have to take sides but I can feel like I contributed" option, heh.

oh but I don't mind, but it's confusing for others who take some of your discussions too seriously ;)

@tzenes Except it's not, because you can cast multiple votes.

@badp I think that is the implicit flaw in putting this issue to an open vote
@badp unless they didn't

woehoe for solving problems by committee

@tzenes then they can still vote for the option they prefer.

8:38 AM
since there is no way to tell I'd like to err on the side of not screwing people over

we should have gotten in Sarah Palin

@tzenes yeah, do you have any alternative in mind for a closed vote?

chat has the unfortunate problem of spawning multiple threads simultaneously

Oak tried to get a "real thing" poll from the devs and got no answer in two months, IIRC
we can't host the poll offsite due to abuse concerns...

I think a poll is the wrong decision, but even if we did want to go for a poll we could have one with prepopulated answers

8:40 AM
Well, you're mentioning something with a closed number of answers -- possibly just two, "Yes, always" and "No, never."

or we could specifically stipulate at the beginning that status quo isn't an option
@badp essentially

Sounds more like a poll than what we're running now

well, I think @Oak sort of kicked off the entire vote without considering all the problems
but that's kind of irrelevant

he did try to poll those problems :P

eh, we had a week to come up with problems

8:41 AM
and I did mention specifically this problem
people who don't understand the issue voting with a lack of understanding

I didn't like the way the poll was made tbh, but couldn't come up with an alternative myself

I'll keep saying it: Jeff needs to come from Mount Olympus and smack game-rec down to Hades

At the end of the day, even if it stinks, we need to decide something; it doesn't have to be set in stone or anything

@badp the main problem with the poll is that there should have been selected answers pre-populated

I don't think the impetus is more important than screwing people over

8:43 AM
either by collaborating with a few community members to have them ready to go when the poll went up, or by Oak posting all the valid options, whatever.

will we have to wait if we make a new poll? yes, but its better than how messed up this one got

point is, every good choice should have been there to be voted on from day one.
Instead, there was no clear pro-game rec option for a solid 2 days after the poll went up.

which caused that wishy washy nonsense to get upvoted as the only pro-rec option availiable
and then it snowballed because it was the pro-rec choice highest on the list.

Oak
9:45 AM
@tzenes regarding your ping, my main desire was to get everything sorted out - and like badp said, over a week no alternative was raised and no-one downvoted the question to indicate disapproval - not even you. In hindsight, perhaps the idea to convene in advance and make a list of viable options would have been right, but no-one proposed it at the time.
Even your hesitation was more about what people would vote up than what suggestions would appear.
I do not see the current status of the poll as a complete disaster - like Grace Note said, a difference could be made between judging a proposal on its applicability and judging it according to long-term site health.
But nevertheless I disagree with Grace saying this is similar to removing a joke proposal, since this one was real and highly-upvoted for serious reasons
Frankly, I'm not sure what's the worst thing to do - removing the specific proposal or removing the whole poll .

@Oak Can't you reset its vote count and lock the answer maybe, so it can't be voted on?

10:55 AM
@Oak The point of my example there is that we have absolutely no devices to differentiate any sort of reasons. Serious or joke, the point was to establish a person who proposes an idea in good intentions, and notices mid-vote that something is wrong with the policy itself. In the hypothetical and the real, it ended up being the most popular but honestly my motive had been trying to get it taken down before it got a lot of votes.
@Oak I explicitly named this suggestion as an issue in your thread, and even wrote a huge argument on chat about it for you to read in the mod room. You didn't even respond to it until after the poll started. So don't say there was no one pointing out that there were possibly problematic policies.

11:18 AM
@Oak In a general scenario and assuming that it was done early enough in the process, removing a specific policy would be much the lesser evil, if not oft times a good idea. In our scenario, I am inclined to agree that a poll reset is probably the better option. It extends the end of this debacle, but I feel that stings a lot less than leaving a mulling thought that the process was rigged.

Oak
@Grace didn't mean to upset you, man :)
Moreover, my first reaction to you telling Bruce "you can withdraw the policy if you want to" was "no he cannot, there a tons of votes behind the policy, it's no longer his to remove"
So I was about to write something like that
And then I just carefully re-read all the comment thread there
... and I accepted your modification.

Oak
So I read what you said in the mod room, I guess I sort of had a belief the poll will sort itself up
I'm a big believer in community-managed sites

Yes, I dislike you?

@Oak The problem is that the reasons why that answer can't be chosen are tl;dr, which makes them challenging to convey to your user base :(

Oak
Perhaps the best thing is to stop the poll, wait until we get actually-elected moderators, and then have them re-run it in some better way, in which they have more participation
e.g. by pre-filtering available policies

11:28 AM
Yay let's start over again
What's this, our third or fourth attempt? :P

Oak
@badp I'm open for better solutions, I really am

It would be our second, @badp
Technically, we never ran a vote on any of the other horrendouses that I wrote

I expect you do be our benevolent dictators and if the SO-team disagrees they should take action, if they do not you decide the course the site should take

I think pre-filtering the available policies would be a satisfactory course of action, @Oak.

@IvoFlipse isn't it faster to have the SO team just agree on something before they disagree on what we manage to agree

Oak
11:29 AM
yo @Aub

duhuh, but if you announce it they have time to disagree

Hey @Oak

@IvoFlipse ...after the fact, as it was with NothingToInstall.com? :P

she said yes to what @Oak?

As long as we have some method to remove policies in which the policy itself is problematic. That's all I want. I want whoever comes in our stead, and the community as a whole, to have a policy which they can cleanly enforce.

Oak
11:30 AM
Oh that was terrible

Hey, @Aubergine

well they changed it to NTI themselves, so that's actually not completely fair

Oak

you announce we're going to things this way
then start spamming for it
then start actually doing it

Not overly late. I am a bug squashing prodigy!

and some time into it we decide it's time for a hasty backpedaling

in the end @badp, it might be nasty, but at least we get a policy
this is taking us nowhere

which nets us loss in credibility

people will forget we ever had this discussion eventually

Oak
11:32 AM
@badp agree there. We have a banner and all. Stopping a poll is horrible

my answer does have a clear majority (if we exclude that other) <_<

only @tzenes will bring it up occasionally

I'm still gunning for the allow-all to get some steam behind it

I wonder, can we take a dump of the bad answer to someplace safe, with comments and all, then delete it from the poll?
I'm against straight deleting but... it's just noise right now.
(except for the votes. sigh.)
But again, only votes on that answer would be wasted, as multiple upvotes are allowed.
Oh, and for the future, isn't three weeks a bit too much?
Even moderator elections are faster :P

Oak
Didn't see any particular reason to make it short, and didn't want to draw it over christmas, either

11:38 AM
@Oak uh, you wanted to make it actually longer than that?

A: List of questions for candidates in 2010 moderator election

Pete L. ClarkQuestion for Robin Chapman: If elected as moderator, will you continue hitting return at the end of each line of your comments?

Oak
@badp I thought about anything between 1 week and 1 month.

@Oak yeah, 1wk sounds good.

Oak
btw @Grace @tzenes @badp I guess a solution that will not include canceling the poll is letting it finish, enforce the chosen policy (which will probably be badp's), and bring this up again once actual mods are elected - which should be soonish seeing that it already started in math. This way we don't break our "word" towards the users - everything took place as planned - and the new moderators have the mandate to change it.
(as even mentioned in the question there - mods can change)
The downside is that we run double polls in close proximity,
and that the new poll starts with a different status-quo
and that the whole thing is ugly
But at least there's no decision taken back

That sounds plausible.

running a game-rec poll right after the elections again would be practically taking the decision back
I'd rather have another discussion about something different
I'm sure @ArdaXi will come up with something to complain about.

Oak
11:53 AM
@badp but it would be "legit"

Technically, we'd only have the poll if there was significant enough unrest that our successors think it's a good idea

you're so assuming you and your successor aren't the same set...

It's a reasonable assumption.

Grand Master Elections Plan: trick Oak Grace and Juan to get in the elections, then pull everyone else out at the last second. BAM! Instant democracy. We don't even have to waste time in "elections" (peh)

we shouldn't have to waste time on it anyway

@Aubergine Mod-wise, we're going to have elections in the near future.
The Stack Overflow team is waiting for the Math elections to finish completely, see how the process went, and then start elections on other sites.

Back in July, we appointed Moderators Pro Tempore for the nascent Stack Exchange 2.0 communities. Leadership is critical to any community’s success, and the bootstrapping of a community often requires those leaders to be appointed before the community is large enough or organized enough to elect them itself.

Our fellow moderators Pro Tempore have been instrumental in keeping their communities tidy and on track through the public beta and beyond. Now that the earliest Stack Exchange 2.0 sites have been fully public for over 60 days, we believe at least some of the communities are ready to take the last important step towards self governance — by electing their own moderators. As we’ve said from the very first days of the Stack Overflow beta: …

And do we have candidates, or is it not that time yet?

Candidates will self nominate themselves as the first phase of the process

@Aubergine In the first week wanna-be mods step up to the plate, in the second week (if reqd.) the top 10 wanna-bes are chosen, in the third week you pick three candidates and complicated maths get you the three winners of the diamond-o-matic.

Compared to last year’s numbers, the trend here is basic globalization 101 — more and more traffic from outside the USA over time, where the US dropped from 36% to just 30% of the total in a single year. The top 10 countries only account for 66% of traffic overall, down from 71% last year.  …

we have well enough 3k users

I disagree. I accept Grace's opinion that policies can be withdrawn without nullifying the entire poll.

Especially when you can and do vote multiple entries.

I think it's possible, but I still don't think it's being fair to the 60 users who threw in their votes towards that policy.

@Mana They voted to change nothing. "Change nothing" was never an option.
If nothing else their opinion deserves to be ignored.
← grumpy.

They voted to change nothing because we let change nothing become an option!

@Mana like I said to Grace - at first, when he removed such a highly-upvoted policy suggestion, I was very unhappy with it. I then carefully re-read the comments on that, and finally accepted that action.
Other users might have done the same.

@Mana Irrelevant. They voted to change nothing because they don't care and just want to ask those questions, oblivious to all the problems they make, or because they don't know why we have problems with them.

Oak
I think it was a good option. I agree that it's very hard to enforce on the long term, and will raise many subsequent arguments.

siiiigh. @badp I don't get why you're biting into @tzenes about this, though.

Now, I'm going to have to ask that people vote to close our current poll: http://meta.gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/1491

Less drama, moar kittens.

Like seriously, linking him those two meta questions and blaming them specifically on him? If anything it was just as much my fault for voting.

@Mana I would've linked the five of you if I could :)

@badp fair enough.

but there's a one @-reply per comment limit.

Oak
... which is a shame honestly

You didn't have to @ anyone, really.
Your statement will just cause more people to be angry at tzenes and make some members of our community even more irrational. You're just contributing to the drama just as much as we did.

@Mana Not what I'm trying to achieve -- since he's offline, he may not appreciate the timing and existence of those two posts.
Anyway. Fine. Comment deleted.

Thank you <3 hugs

hugs Mana's neck

:(

Oak
Oh the love

But...I don't get why Aardvark would leave, really.

teaches @badp the difference between hugging and choking

Maybe it was unrelated, but the timing's too coincidential.

@TimStone oh, fine
chokes Mana's waist

Oak
I don't think it's unrelated. A high-rep user asking for account deletion?
No other reason I can think of.
