:15609 yes you are correct.

Yes you do? Or yes, you don't?

Yeah, so... I started typing up a FarmVille question. I just can't do it. It's not worth it.
3

Why would you want to be awarded for a mistag? :)

I wouldn't.
I'm just curious about the system.
I'm tempted to ask a question about another flash game... I should actually contribute to the site content for once though...

I'd have a question about Anti-Idle, but I consider it a service to the community (and myself) to keep the mentioning of that game to a minimum

5:04 PM
You should ask about 'Just Chatting'
I think it's Kongregate only though.
Not that any of you probably know what that means.

You're gonna have to try harder if you want to pull out the 'it's too obscure for you' card here on gaming.se buddy.

I was incredibly surprised when I received an answer on this question:

Q: Who wrote this incredible theme-song?

GnomeSliceIf anyone here remembers a game for the Nintendo 64 by the name of "Buck Bumble" you may remember how awesome the theme song that played at the main menu was. Can anybody tell me who wrote this song? I would really like to know. If you haven't heard the Buck Bumble Theme yet, you should. Here...

:15618 too bad, played it already.
:15624 google-fu = more rep ;)

:15626 where did you stop?

Why are there more than 1 SE sites for gaming?
:15627 Google fu hadn't helped me with that one for like 6 years.

5:09 PM
you're asking the wrong question :P

:15628 don't know anymore.

:15629 What do you mean?

hmm, I didn't know that existed.

:15634 those are old Private StackExchange 1.0 sites.

5:11 PM
This is in a list of public sites.

HISTORY LESSON TIME!!!

btw, we're at 9885!

woo!

Although, I'm noticing that most of the links are dead...

:15637 Private as in privately owned, and not owned by SO

5:12 PM
We must get 10,000 before this chat gets assimilated!

Yeah, the site is quite dead. There's even some spam in there.

I'm going to stay up until 6:AM and post a farmville question for 10,000.

Get asking and answering peoples!

The Stack Exchange Network is a network of websites featuring questions and answers on a wide range of topics in different fields, owned and operated by Stack Overflow Internet Services, Inc. The websites feature the ability for users to ask and answer questions, and through membership and active participation, to vote questions and answers up or down and edit questions and answers in a wiki fashion. Users can earn reputation points and "badges" through site participation; for example, a user is awarded 10 reputation points for receiving an "up" vote on an answer given to a question, and...

Ah, I understand now. They just used the engine. So SO doesn't own the SE engine?

Yeah, but they used to license the engine to anyone who wanted to shell out some cash, before realizing that resulted in a lot of graveyards.

So, SO owns the engine, but licenses it out to independent developers?

5:14 PM
Then they came up with the Area 51/Stack Exchange scheme, and stopped licensing it out

Area 51 is where new sites are suggested, yes?
Who owns those sites, if they take off?

It is now, yeah.
Before Area 51 anyone could start up a stackexchange site, which turned out to not be such a great idea if you want a site to flourish and grow
There are still a handful of sites that exist under the old model... Some are migrating to the new system, some are closing down. I'm not sure what the exact plan is
zergoverflow.com, draw3cards.com are a couple other gaming-related ones. (There's also an EVE Online site whose name I forget)

New system? What's the difference?

The new system is that all sites are proposed through area51, and they aren't created unless there's a solid base of support and community around them.

Who owns them, once they take off?
SO?

5:18 PM
yeah.

you're confusing past with the present
Area51 is a 2.0 thing

@badp > Me? I'm just not familiar with the system at all.

Pricings and licensing is a 1.0 thing

The timeline is something like this:

just don't worry about it :)

5:20 PM
@badp > Yeah, that's sorta what I had in mind. :P

1) Stack Overflow takes off. 2) StackExchange forms and allows anyone to open a SO-alike for $$$. 3) Many such sites open and immediately stagnate. 4) The program is killed off and is replaced with Area 51

Is any money involved in Area 51?
Or people can get sites opened for free?

Nope, the sites are opened for free, but only if it passes all the requirements Area 51 sets (followers, sample questions, commitments from users, blah blah)

no money involved, just a solid community.

they want sites that succeed, not ghost towns

5:22 PM
How are initial moderators selected then?

shrugs

based on the private beta.

I assume private beta is only open to those who follow the sites progress through area 51?

Yeah, you have to commit to the site to get access to the private beta. Here's Gaming: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1338/gaming

Only to those who committed, and you can only commit to a total of three sites at the same time.

5:24 PM
We scored pretty well.

we were one of the sites used to create the scoring in the first place ;)

Gaming and Webapps got enough support pretty much immediately

Wow, I'm seeing a lot of you people in the pre-beta questions. :) I only found out about Gaming once it got to public beta.
I was referred.
So, the sample questions are migrated to the full site, after it takes off?

The sample questions on area 51 are just to figure out what sort of thing belongs on the site and what is off topic, they aren't really "answerable" in the usual stack exchange sense

During private beta everything works as usual. Except it's private to those who committed.
Also rep requirements for most stuff are much lower.

5:28 PM
I committed and then totally forgot about the site for a month. :(

:15696 rep limits are nearly non-existing during the private beta.

:15697 check your mail dammit!
:15698 yeah, for example 2k to edit

Speaking of rep limits, I don't seem to be getting any notifications of new powers as I gain rep.
How do I know when I've enabled something?

Wait, so since I'm a vet, I get less notifications?
Making any user with more than 1 account a vet seems rather silly...

5:34 PM
:15705 comment

You mean, point that out?
Wouldn't that be a feature-request?

you can go to gaming.stackexchange.com/privileges to see a list of what you can do

Hold on, this isn't for the gaming site though, these values are far higher than ours, correct?

(this ought to be linked in the FAQ or something)
hmm, and all the descriptions are blank.

...Yes they are.
Yikes. Bug report?
I got this.

5:37 PM
:15713 post a bug report on meta.

it's like that on stackoverflow too

Really?
Is it intentional?

:15718 that deserves a MSO bug report.

I doubt it. I could have sworn I hit that page earlier this morning and there were descriptions there.

:15712 yeah, it needs to be added to the FAQ

5:39 PM
Well, I'll post it then, you have more credibility to lose than I do. ;)

Oh wait, you can get to /privileges by clicking your numeric reputation on any page header.

:15725 still, could be added to the FAQ.

:15711 no, numbers are accurate on /privilieges (and /faq)

Because we definitely don't need 1,500 rep to create new tags.
I wasn't even aware I could create new ones until someone told me.

:15729 tag wiki creation != tag creation.

5:44 PM
:15729 What page says that? The FAQ on gaming.se says 150.

The meta SO page someone linked in.

A: I've gained the privilege to vote up on Stack Overflow.

wafflesThis is a bit glitchy, I seemed to have missed marking those notifications as "sent" when I deployed the system, there are 30 more users with 5k rep on SO that will be affected. But let me take a step back and explain how the new system works: We have these privilege things on each site: F...

:15733 I was talking about each site's /privileges and /faq

Oh, I guess that screenshot is referring to another site

@badp > Well, I figured that one out. :P Numbers didn't add up.

5:46 PM
SO, SU and SF, MSO, Area 51 private betas, Area 51 public betas, Area 51 graduates: each group has different requirements
so mind rephrasing? what site's requirement doesn't match what you read where? :)

Nothing about requirements, I was just thinking out loud, sorry for the miscommunication.
What I meant was 'Oh the different sites must have different rep limits, because these don't match ours." :P

no worries.
as we have per-game tagging, we need a lower rep requirement, compared to sites like SO who have a more static tag pool.

That's sort of what I figured was going on.

Q: Rep Privilege Descriptions are Blank.

GnomeSlice      I first noticed this issue on Gaming and it seems to be prevalent here as well. The description of reputation privileges are blank. The required rep, and personal rep percentage accumulated counters seem in order, but the rest of the content is mysteriously absent. This is...

Confirmed on webapps as well.

+1 for hand-drawn circle

:D
No dropshadow, sorry.

5:56 PM
don't forget the freehand questionmark!

:P Handy little screen capture extension on Chrome.
Oohh, I can set it to save as a png instead...

:15736 I'd watch that if I didn't think TB was a complete tool.

So, just for clarification, the descriptions ARE supposed to have some content, right?
I mean, I've been generating upvotes, so I assume so...

:15755 they should have content.
> Click on any privilege to learn more about it.

Yes, that's what I was wondering about. I mean, clicking on one now still shows you the required rep for that privilege, which IS more about it, but it didn't seem like much...

6:01 PM
:15759 how does that learn you about the privilege?

@alex > Well, it's slightly more about it. But agreed, that's why I was wondering; it doesn't seem like much extra...
I want to put a bounty on a question, but I don't want to give up any rep. Gah.

:15763 Just make sure it's an interesting enough question that it'll generate 10 votes. Free bounty :)

It's not my question.
I want a decent answer to it though. So far it's all been speculation.

A: What's the most efficient usage of the golden mushroom in Mario Kart 64?

GnomeSlice      I agree with George Stocker about using it to get through slower shortcuts, and also to knock around other racers. However, my personal experience seems to suggest that giving it a bit of time in between presses of the [Z] button seems to help maximize the boost's effect. &...

My bad, linked to my answer.
If it doesn't get a decent one in a few more days, I'll just give up 50 rep.

6:17 PM
@tzenes About now?

7:23 PM
hey @Thom

user30
Heh, that looks odd

user30
Want to talk blog?

7:38 PM
I'm at work right now so I don't have time
what's your schedule like... relative to UTC

ds.ign.com/articles/113/1130322p1.html Original Mario design concept had him shooting goombas with a ray gun.
also jet packs.

@tzenes Urm, not much work to do tomorrow so 8am-4pm is good, busy later though if the weather is good

k, I work from about 3pm to 12pm, so let's try to sync up around 1-2?

user30
Sounds good to me

we'll meet here?

user30
7:45 PM
Or on chat.stackexchange.com, whichever exists at that time

sounds great

8:03 PM
So, if our chat is moving to MSO, what does that do to the handful of chat features with rep requirements attached to them?

I assume it'll grant you the privilege as long as you've got enough rep at any site on the network
I think chat.meta.stackoverflow is also going to be moved to chat.stackexchange at some point
the user profile page on chat.stackexchange has a little widget that lets you pick which "parent site" you want your chat profile associated with, so there's clearly some network-wide stuff happening there.

2 hours later…
10:03 PM
So I'm giving taksi a try.
It mostly works.
You're suppposed to be able to select codecs, but the selection kinda sucks
Microsoft VIDEO 1 is the default, 512 megs for a 3 minutes video.
Sigh.
Problem is, the video isn't actually 3 mins.
Due to the recording overhead some frames haven't been rendered.
This means I have 3:49 video with 3:49 audio and 2:41 video.
That's probably why, by default, Taksi doesn't record sound.
I'll try to reenable compensation.
Yeah, that helped.
Let's see if Youtube supports this shitty codec.

Gah, whenever I want to do something DIY-related, all the components I find are too high quality

10:44 PM
DIY has gone from being a punk rock ethos to a hobby for rich nerds. :(

10:55 PM
