I've been working on a rack so I can install a receiver in my garage and play tunes when I'm out there. Lots of fun.
I have built a small rectangle out of angle iron (15.5"x17.5").
My first mistake was, I was trying to build the rack so the receiver would fit just right into it. Unfortunately I had measured the wrong receiver and the 15.5" side only really needed to be 13.5". The other side is standard rack width when something is installed, so it's right (the 17.5").
That wasn't a big deal, it just meant I'd have some extra space on the end so I can run some wires down through or whatever. It also keeps it from the wall a little better.
Next, so the rack can be supported on the wall, I took some angle iron and cut them at 45° so the receiver could be high up on the wall, pointing down. This way it would be out of the way, yet reachable so I could adjust things and see what was on the display. I also cut some small triangles to weld onto the rack between the legs and the rack itself to provide a little more support. Once welded all up, it should be able to withstand the weight of the receiver without it sagging over time.
Okay, well I got everything welded together today and did exactly what I was afraid I was going to do ... I welded the legs onto the wrong side (short side and not the long side). I put some extra effort into the welding, cleaned up the welds so it wasn't so ugly, was setting it down to let it cool so I could throw some paint on it ... then realised what I'd done. Argh.
Now I'm going to have to cut the legs off, clean everything back up again, and get the legs on the correct side. What a PITB! I should have just put the receiver on the bench and called it a day.
