Hah! Yah. I know exactly what you mean.
I've got way too many posts to go back and read ... I'd be here all week.
Gives other people a chance to edit things, right?
:-)

Yeah, I just have a few that make crazy when I read them. I must have written some of them at 3am. Well, I know I did.
I was being fervent.

ROFL
I am not quite that fervent ... I did have a bunch of time while at work to do a bunch of them.
That was in the past. I don't have near the time at work now.
I try to stay away from the internet at work, actually. It becomes one big squirrel for me ... one which attacks and never lets go, the furry little beastie.

A: 2016 Moderator Election Q&A - Questionnaire

tlhIngantlhIngan I have occasionally seen a user with a high network-wide rep (ie has a lot of positive interaction on other SE sites) cause a lot of friction on a site they have recently joined by insisting that "the site is doing it wrong." If this occurs here, and causes trouble with the easy g...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Sorry Paulster, been chasing employment and off the grid. This is what i have for a '92 SVX, but I can't confirm this is appropriate for an EG33. I can't imagine it's that much different... they didn't even invent vacuum until 1982...

One of the worst things about traveling the world is hearing how other people imitate American accents. It's horrifying.

@BobCross What is horrifying are the American accents themselves. :)

That's what I'm talking about. "Hamburger hamburger! Bang bang!"
It makes it super painful when the guys you're traveling with want to talk about the Red Saaaaaaahx

9:25 AM
You're lucky they're not imitating the Texan accent.

@Zaid Possibly... that would suck

Sorry, the Baaaaaahstan and Faaaaaah Rivaaah accents are much more embarrassing. Southern accents are at least distinctly regional.
Some of the people near where I live sound like they're talking with their sinuses.

Just been surfing through some of the other betas and recently graduated sites which would be peers to mechanics.SE. It makes me feel so much at home here...
I believe I had a touch of nostalgia.

Q: Will never charging the batteries of a hybrid vehicle damage it?

JoErNanOI am likely to be forced to use a Volvo V60 in its electric plug-in version for my daily commutes. This is a 2.4l diesel engine with an added plug-in electric motor whose batteries require ca. 8 hours to fully charge. Ideally one would do this at night or at work during the day. The problem is ...

2:48 PM
@JoErNanO Sorry about the radical change in my answer, I read your question wrong at first.

@anonymous2 Don't even mention it. That's what the Edit button is for. :)
I also edited the question to clarify it.

@DucatiKiller ?

5:52 PM
@DucatiKiller - Test is tonight.
I've studied about 5 minutes for it. I plan on taking some time this afternoon to go over what I need to know. It's open book/note, so shouldn't be too bad.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 What's it a test in?

I'm going to log out for now. Probably won't be back on tonight. You all have a great evening.

Q: Washers stuck to banjo bolt

user1419440I was replacing a brake caliper and wanted to replace the banjo bolt and associated washers. However, the washer was too narrow to allow the banjo bolt to come off. I tried to just reuse the banjo bolt but found that it leaked brake fluid. The conventional wisdom that you shouldn't try to re-u...

Can you flag something as Not a question? :)

@anonymous2 I was referring to the business card you put into the Election chat.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Good luck! I'm sure you'll crush it.
@anonymous2 Yes, you can flag it as not a question.
@anonymous2 How you doin this fine day?

@DucatiKiller Great, you?

Living the dream as they say.

Sure. Are you a professional mechanic? (Sorry, I'm sure the info is out there somewhere)

and working on some projects. An old CB900 engine rebuild and reassembling my Aprilia.

7:46 PM
Sweet
For your F1 application? ;)

No worries, I am not. I'm currently a professional slacker. Quite my job a few weeks ago.....I'm in IT. Background in HA and BC.
the CB900 is bike so I'd have to add some wheels :-)

Ah. Ok, I do see that you're on Serverfault.
Under a different name, looks like.

Used to be a Honda MC mechanic, 25+ years ago.
Yeah, I use a different handle on the rest of the sites.

Why did you stop, out of curiosity?

It was a stepping stone job for me. My dad made me get a trade to earn money with while I was in college, he didn't care what it was, it just needed to be a skill that I learned. So I picked motorcycle mechanic because I was club racing bikes.
So I got certified and worked in dealerships started college and went into IT.
He was engineer and felt a trade was important for anyone to know regardless of education.

7:52 PM
Can sympathise.

I was OK with it. It gave me a great troubleshooting baseline.
Which translated well into IT.

True. It's actually kind of what got me into mechanics as well.
Though for me it's more of a personal thing; being able to provide for a future family, etc.

It made me better at cutting problems in half.

With a hacksaw?
;)

With a hammer....

7:54 PM
Of course, I should have known.
@DucatiKiller Problems = Honda?

not IMO. Honda = Reliability
Honda = Thoughtful Design

Up till date, what I've heard about Honda has been pretty good.
Though my only personal experience with Honda was rather negative.
NB: was
It was a Poulan Pro push mower, and did it ever have problems.

I worked on a lot of Honda's in the late 80's and early 90's because I was at a dealership. All the rest of the manufacturers were a disaster then in terms of reliability Yamama was the pack leader in the shit show arena.

Hmm, that's before my time.

I like Suzuki and Aprilia as well nowadays. I've owned more Suzuki than anything else.

7:59 PM
Afraid I haven't owned either. I've driven a Suzuki four-wheeler (my boss's).
Bother. That doesn't look right.
My boss's?
Ok, looks like I had it right. boss's.
@DucatiKiller Unfortunately, it's already out of date.

Love my Aprilia. The only problem it's given me is that it got hit by a car.

Not it's fault, I assume?

IMO, whenever there is a motorcycle accident it's ALWAYS the riders fault.

Or the driver who ran into them.
But I agree. If you run into a telephone pole with any vehicle, you don't get off (out) and start scolding the vehicle.
There's a reason the car isn't paying its own insurance.

I can't look at it that way. If you ride a MC you have to be aware of your surroundings and own it. If you don't and get hit, then an excuse as to why is irrelevant if your dead.
I"m just trying to set myself up for success rather than failure.

8:14 PM
Not sure I quite caught your meaning.

Success = Not getting hit. Taking responsibility, even if I get hit from behind, forces me to consider everything more. That it's my responsibility to survive life, regardless of what I'm doing, not someone else's.
Whenever I've had an incident, I don't focus on what they did from a blame perspective. I focus on what I could have done differently as objectively as I can.

All right, I've got you. Right on.
Frankly, I think it's a value that has been totally lost in our society.
That is, personal responsibility.

That way I become more focused on my actions and skills rather than being pissed off at all the crappy 4 wheel drivers that are texting, eating and putting on makeup as they drive.
Exactly. Personal responsibility.

It's good to know there's still at least one person who still thinks that way. :)
And please don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that courts don't serve a purpose.
Just - they shouldn't be our first thought when something goes wrong.
Just my opinion, though.
Frankly, now I think of it, personal responsibility vastly increases a person's value in whatever situation, be it driving, moderating, getting a job, studying, or whatever.

I agree. We're a very litigious society. My mother died because of medical errors in a hospital and we didn't sue. We moved on. It wouldn't have changed anything and we would have lived in anger and resentment rather than healing. It wouldn't have punished anyone because of their irresponsibility and we would have received monetary gain, which.....doesn't amount to much when you lose someone you love.
@anonymous2 Totally agree. I ask questions re: personal responsibility when I interview.

8:26 PM
@DucatiKiller Very true. Very true.

Lawyers.....not a big fan.

@DucatiKiller Me neither. I only know one, who happens to be my aunt.
and... I'll avoid speaking too much about her too much.

I have two really good friends that are lawyers. Our discussions are pretty lively.

Seriously, she lived some hard experiences, so I can kind of understand.

I talk about how they are ruining the world and they talk about how ignorant I am.

8:29 PM
@DucatiKiller Sounds like my discussions on the War of 1812 with Americans.
I have an advantage having written a 5-10k word composition on it.

What part of the world do you live in?

Canada.
You're in the US, right?

I guess I'll avoid a war of 1812 debate with you.
Yes, live in the desert Southwest. Arizona.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Get out of here. You have other responsibilities.

Ha ... you're right.

Taking a break?

8:31 PM
@DucatiKiller Yes, I don't need two Americans pinning me on 1812.

hah
I'm aware it happened ... beyond that ... who knows, lol!

Don't feel badly, there are historians who have spent years studying that war and come to the same conclusion. :)

I'd like to hear your take on it. I'm a huge fan of history. What is your conclusion?

In a nutshell, the Americans were by and large after more land.
Already I've got a bunch to back up, I know.
But the maritime issues it was supposedly fought over are very weak arguments as the North (shipping center) was largely opposed to the war.

What about all the American's that were conscripted to fight for the British in the Royal Navy before America declared war? They were essentially taken captive as slaves against their will.

8:35 PM
@SteveRacer - I cannot see the diagram here at work, but I'll assume it's the same one I've seen. I'm pretty sure the EG33 is the only engine they used in the SVX (well, even a little bit more than "pretty sure" ... I'm positive it's the only engine they put in it). So I bet it's the right diagram. May even be the one I stuffed into the answer which was posted.

@DucatiKiller There are actually only a couple real happenings of that.
Most of them were undocumented tales from anti-British captains.
In the one major case that did happen, the British government made a formal apology and made amends.

Alrighty! I'm off to study ... for a test I could care less about ... in a class I have no motivation to take. Argh ... I guess since work is paying for it.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Best wishes!

Thanks for the well wishes, all.
I appreciate it.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Don't forget your gum.

8:37 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Crush it!
LOL

Canada was basically fighting to keep from being taken over.
The Indians were fighting... well, in hopes that the white men would support them and return their lands.

@anonymous2 - BWAT!
@anonymous2 - Is that what they teach you up there?

The supposed issues for the war (maritime security, territorial disputes) were settled a few days before the war was declared, but the news arrived to late in America.

Just playing. Have a good evening and I'll stop procrastinating.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Haven't you ever heard of Sir Isaac Brock?
Anyhow, the war started either which way.

8:40 PM
Do you have a perspective that the US, at the time, could have felt very threatened by impressment of the sailores who the Brits claimed were actually deserters. Boarding US ships and what not? They were violating sovereignty essentially. OR you see it another way.

There is some truth to that.
Britain was abusing their power, at least on a few occasions.
However, that too was being ironed out, as with the official apology from the British government.

Hegemonic Empires have a tendency of bullying.

Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Indeed

Be back in a minute.
The Americans didn't get more land. The "national honour" claims are very hard to verify, and the war didn't appear to do much in that respect in any case.
The Canadians on the other hand, succeeded in defending their land.
Against extreme odds, I might add.
All historians agree that the Indians lost the war.

8:44 PM
Honor has been a very misused word throughout history IMO

Very true. Very, very true.

Do you listen to Dan Carlin podcasts?

I'm afraid not.
Historian?

Podcaster and pseudo historian.
Lot's of awards. Amazing guy.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to check into him sometime.

8:47 PM
He's on episode 3 of a 5 part series on the Persian Empire right now. Each podcast is between 2.5 and 4 hours long.

Sounds very interesting. I love history.
One thing history teaches us is not to repeat history.

He just finished a 5 part series on WWI and The Khans. Near 30 hours of spoken word. The guy is next level.
Absolutely, if your open to the lesson.

Out of curiosity, how is his language? I mean, is he fairly refined, or more popular style?

I use a podcast app on my iphone and subscribe to it. His language use is very good.

How much is the subscription?

8:50 PM
Not as good as @Zaid 's skills but still, awesome.
It's free for the previous 4 serials I think
Right now, The Khans, World War I and The Persian Empire are free.
Previous episodes cost money. A couple of bucks.

Neat! I'll definitely look into that.

They are essentially books on tape.

Cool.
Definitely the way people tend to go these days.

@RobertS.Barnes Thanks for the code! It's starred.

@DucatiKiller Aha, I've dated you. Tape, indeed!

8:53 PM
Pretty much

To be honest, I didn't notice at first.

8-tracks were getting phased out when I was a kid.
BAM, just started my Aprilia for the first time in 3 months. Now onto the bodywork.

8-tracks, hmm. That's a bit before my time.
Bodywork, now that's where things get fun. Do you have a welder?

A crappy one.

Better than none.

8:58 PM
I have a friend who is an architect that has all the good stuff. I goto his shop and use all his gear usually. Plus, he can help tune up my skills while I'm doing it.

I'm still standing in doubt as to whether I should remove my answer on mechanics.stackexchange.com/questions/37320/…
It's not as official as I would like it to be.
Apparently 4 people who think it is, 1 person who thinks it's not.

What don't like it about it? It has good citations, clear formatting regarding quoting, plenty of sources.

Check the latest comment.

I'd lose the Reddit quote. That's just an opinion.

Drop it out?

9:02 PM
Can you find a citation from the Society of Automotive Engineers?
I wouldn't use Reddit for a citation on something

Good question, I'll look and see.

I just found that too.
Do you want to post it as an answer?

No, you should use it to shore up your citations
I'm good.
I've had a banner 2 days in rep and badges.

Ok, done.

9:09 PM
That seems to tie things down nicely.

Yes, sir! Thank you for your suggestion.

Can't complain about the SAE and radioactive piston rings.
Glad to help

@DucatiKiller I guess not, lol.

"we measured isotopes......" When someone opens with that I don't have a reply. lol

9:11 PM
@Zaid Nice! I made my son read that when he was 15

@Zaid A book you wrote?

We still talk about it today and that was 12 years ago.
lol

@DucatiKiller I thought you'd be familiar with it :)

I did a similar trip with him from Phoenix to Portland when he was 15 years and 10 months old. Got his learners permit, did some practice and off we went. 2 weeks camping off bikes.

So why didn't you write a sequel?

9:14 PM
The sound of the air compressor would have drowned out the philosophic ramblings.
@Zaid Just started my Aprilia after 3 months!

Lol

two cranks.... :-)

@Zaid, he did write a sequel. It goes:
If you can't fix it with a hammer it's an electrical problem
4

@DucatiKiller I know the feeling. My M5 was out for 7 months

9:16 PM
erg...

The first time I drove it I felt rewarded for reviving it

That's ALWAYS a great feeling.

The trouble I have is selling something after having had that feeling about it.

Can't wait to take this on the freeway, hopefully tonight....late...wheelie time!
new carbon fiber exhaust too. It sounds like a real bull.

Akrapovic?

9:19 PM
I don't know, @DucatiKiller, I've done a lot around bulls, and usually they don't sound like much.
2
Except for a a chewing noise and a heavy thump now and then.

NO! Arrow. They don't make Akrapovic for it anymore. Funny, because it's OEM for it if you buy the race kit.

Weird
Oh well

Oh, well, @DucatiKiller, looks like someone can argue with isotopes and radioactive piston rings.
Not serious, I'm leaving the answer as is, so take it or leave it everyone.

really? Whattever on him

It's really not serious. The OP has got his answer and moved on in any case.

9:26 PM
Yeah, it seems like it.
@Zaid What's your opinion of this response?
2
A: Is it true that most of the engine wear during its life time occurs during a cold start up?

anonymous2From advanced-auto-maintenance.com: It’s widely acknowledged by automotive engineers that most engine wear occurs within this first ten minutes of driving before the engine has reached its highest, normal operating temperature. From bloomberg.com: When you first start the vehicle, do no...

@anonymous2 He's engineer and has all the cred with me.
@Zaid If you have time, of course.

Oh, and they removed their comment.
And it's back on again.
@DucatiKiller Who is an engineer, not Zach Mierzejewski, I presume?

zaid is an engineer
Sorry, I confused with separate statements above.
I have a tendency of doing that.

Oh, Zaid. Yes, I must admit his opinion would kind of sway mine.
@DucatiKiller It's absolutely not a problem, so long as you don't mind people asking questions.
It makes sense, now that I look at the bigger picture.

Perhaps I'm not being objective enough.

I have a feeling that if Zaid is looking at it, he's really studying this one through.

9:35 PM
Just went through the question and answer

That's how he operates....

What are we focusing on here? Piston rings? Journals?

@Zaid Engine wear, at least theoretically.

Define wear
There are so many things that could wear out in an engine
That's why I'm asking what the question is focusing on
In a pushrod V8 you'd be worrying about valve lash way sooner than piston rings

I'm guessing the OP didn't really know specifically what aspect of engine wear he was trying to focus on.
@Zaid That's certainly true.

9:39 PM
I think in point 1 the OP is focused on ring and cylinder wall wear

True, too.

in point 2 he's interested in wear related to momentary low oil pressure. So that would be cam and crank journals, perhaps.
In point 3 it seems to be oil temp related wear.

I don't have enough data to make a call on whether the wear from cold startups is usually bad enough to contribute to a sizeable portion of piston ring wear or anything else.
I don't have enough data to make a call on whether the wear from cold startups is usually bad enough to contribute to a sizeable proportion of piston ring wear or anything else.

There you have it. I've believed it to be true for most of my life but alas, I have no body of citations to really back it up. I still see the answer as 'good'.

That said, if this were a bad enough issue I'm pretty sure the world's leading engine manufacturers would be pioneering efforts to improve the situation

9:45 PM
True enough as well.
Listen, I'm just going to totally drop the question. I'll leave the answer there for reference, but unless I see something critical in the comments or in chat, I'm going to leave it exactly how it is.

This is a materials design & selection problem

Unless I start receiving requests that I delete it.
In that case I will do so.

@anonymous2 I wouldn't worry about it

I think that's the best plan of action, lol.

The question is rather open ended IMO

9:48 PM
I'm headed out to supper now. Catch you later.

If you find better citations in the future you can always edit

@Zaid Yes, could be closed as primarily opinion based, I guess.

@anonymous2 Take care

@DucatiKiller Will do that if I do.
@DucatiKiller Thanks, same to you.

9:49 PM
I'll see if my Bosch book sheds some light on the matter tomorrow

@Zaid Like your mod answers.
Super clean and to the point

Why aren't you running for mod?

I'm concerned I wouldn't fulfill the time commit.
I've been thinking about it. I asked Rory and Bob a slew of questions the other day regarding time commit.
Of course, I'll always be doing something in the background. Editing, etc. Soon, I'll have a gold MC badge too.
I think you'll do great as a mod.

Do put your name in. You're already doing 70% of mod work

I'll definitely think about it some more.
Decisions where I make a commitment to others are the ones I take the most seriously.
@Zaid Plus, I don't think I'm as objective as you. As well as Bob and Rory.
