4:40 AM
How many mods get picked? Is it three?

1 hour later…

1 hour later…
7:23 AM
@DucatiKiller - yes. The election page says over at the right
currently 3 candidates for 3 places
But it would be nice to see more. 8 feels like a good number... or 10 :-)

8:08 AM
Argh. Of course election festivities start when I'm away from consistent wifi.

2 hours later…
9:59 AM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 You want my nomination? My score will be abysmal though.

10:14 AM
@BobCross - the nomination is relatively brief. For the questions bit, it's probably easier to copy them into a local text doc, edit and then save back up.

10:40 AM
@RoryAlsop yeah working on it. This is a hurry up and wait day though.
My answers should be pretty simple though: every problem on this site is a nail. 🔨🔨🔨🔨🔨

11:07 AM
Lol

11:25 AM
Afternoon @NickC

11:47 AM
@RoryAlsop Afternoon - how are you?

@NickC not too bad, for a Tuesday, thanks ;-)

@RoryAlsop Good good! Only 3.5 days until the weekend ;)

Heh. That's the spirit

I find Tuesday is always the lowest day of the week

12:08 PM
Morning all.
Or afternoon to those across the pond.
@JoErNanO - You never know. Throw yourself in the mix and be part of the fun.

12:31 PM
@RoryAlsop, dude this weather. This is crazy.
I need to put on more sunscreen ... in Scotland ... in October. What's wrong with this picture?!

I keep telling people, Scotland has lovely weather most of the time. We just highlight the bad weather to avoid too many people coming here and filling up our lovely empty roads...

@RoryAlsop well I certainly can't disagree. 100% of the time that I've been here, it's been great. Ergo, it's always great. QED.

@BobCross Have you avoided the Midges though? Scotland's highly effective weapon...

Your country sure is bumpy, though. Sea-level -> top of worn down mountain -> back to sea level.

It's actually made of corrugated cardboard

12:45 PM
@RoryAlsop - Well, you've talked me into it.

turn 90 degrees and it's perfectly flat

Filling up your empty roads, that is.

@NickC pish. This is not the country for death bugs. The windows don't even have screens. When I'm in the Bahamas, I'm covered in bug bites before I manage to slam the door shut against the surge of no-see-ums.

A: How can I pick a random value between 0 and a bigint?

ZaidI was looking at this problem from the wrong angle The bins are not the same size. Each bin is 10 times the size of the previous one. To put this in perspective, there are 10,000 possible integers at magnitude 1e+44 for every integer with magnitude 1e+40. The probability of finding any number w...

A needle in a quasar

@Zaid I like the concept of a needle in a quasar
solvable with Bob's Space Cannon...

12:50 PM
To be honest even Bob's Space Cannon will struggle

Can you not generate the value bitwise?

@Zaid I do not understand your edit to the question

I could, based on some of the answers I received but there won't be much benefit.
@Myself basically it is unrealistic to expect a value like 1e+20 if the big integer goes up to 1e+45
Simple example
How many integers are there at 1e+0 magnitude?

so are you trying to get an even spread of magnitudes?

So you expected it spread across magnitudes?

12:54 PM
@NickC I thought I should be getting an even spread
But clearly that's not possible :)

@Zaid I have to admit that you're correct. The Space Cannon isn't really good at solving math problems. Go figure.

not by a simple calculation, no
every individual int will have the same chance

Exactly

you could do a random-magnitude and a random number?
so 1.<rand> e <rand>

Yes, one could. Or just take logs

12:56 PM
aye

Are we talking computer stuff on a Mech site again?? Oh you silly people.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 That would be a good mod election question

@Myself - I say we need to shut the chat down for a good five minutes until these people come to their senses.

The dictator with the iron fist
:)

I had bought a set of step bits a while back from Harbor Freight
I had chance to use them this weekend.
All I can say is: AWESOME!
I love these things. I don't think because they are HF it means anything ... they just rip right on through and give you the hole you're looking for ... awesome little pieces.

1:21 PM
@Zaid, any interest in Moderator?

@JPhi1618 I am but I don't know if I can find the time to keep the commitment

@Zaid it's not easy.

@Zaid - I would be sad if you didn't join the foray.
Or even the fray.

Good heavens. My sleep schedule still hasn't really adjusted. I'll be right on target just about the time that I need to go home!

Q: What can cause slow oxygen sensor readings?

FanazI have very slow primary (pre-cat) oxygen sensor readings on my 2ZZ-GE (141kW N/A) in 02' Corolla. While trying to investigate the issue, I repeated diagnostics frequently. Before every diagnostic attempt, I fully warmed the engine and raced it @ 2500 RPM for about two minutes. Output of oxygen...

I still think he's reading the wrong sensor.
The OP is talking about reading his O2 sensors in Hz ... O2's are read in voltage, right?

I've never heard of one read in hertz, but I can't honestly claim to have done a lot with them. I thought they were measured in volts as well.

Q: When should I refuel my vehicle?

RogUEI mean, should I refuel my vehicle in the morning? The reasoning is simple, in the morning the temperature is low and the density of the fuel would be higher and I get more energy per litre(or whatever metric system you use). But in afternoon, or by evening, the temperature increases and the d...

Thought about answering, "When it's empty! Or, actually, slightly before."
Will never forget the time that I was driving a co-worker's diesel truck almost out of fuel.

I thought Mythbusters had done something with this. I can see for propane, as it is stored above ground, but for fuel in the ground, I don't think it really matters.

Nope. The time you'll spend trying to work your schedule around it is worth more than the extra gas power you'll get.
One thing I do do at gas stations in Canada is pay cash and fill it up to $50.02.
Because we don't have pennies anymore, so I save 2 cents.
Lol, that's crazy now I think of it.

I know fuel expands as was suggested in the answer. I just don't think there is that much of a temperature swing with the ground soaking up the extra heat. I'm pretty sure it stays on a pretty even temperature. I can see when new fuel is introduced from tanker trucks causing a difference.

1:53 PM
Right on. Of course, the first few litres are actually sitting above ground in the pump.

@anonymous2 - Good point.
Still, the difference is negligible.

If the sun is shining on the pump and that one hasn't been used in an hour or two, you could see a 10-20 degree F difference easily enough.
(I think of this kind of thing because I frequently buy small quantities of fuel for small motors.) :-)
Like, when you need high-octane, empty a bit of gas out of the pump into your car so you don't get the old 88 from the last guy.

@anonymous2 - Then use a pump which has just been used ... duh ... :o)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 That is an excellent point.

ROFL! It happens once in a while.

1:59 PM
You should post that as an answer.

Or maybe you should ... ;-)

Well, I've already got one on there.
And plagerism...
...very dangerous.
Especially international plagerism.

@anonymous2 - Hah!
When I've tried to write physics type things into my answers, I've failed miserably. I don't have any references for my "underground theory" ... so ...

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Well, ok, I guess it's not that serious.
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Well, everyone to his/her style. I'm sure there are clients who would be less than thrilled if their mechanic tried to discuss the physics behind why the fuel delivery wasn't happening like it should.

Well .. yes.
I don't care what comes out of the ground ... FIX MY CAR!!

2:12 PM
Right, which way does the current flow, after all? Positive to negative or negative to positive? Oh right, depends if you ask a mechanic or a physicist.

2:51 PM
I just realized that the people that I'm working with this trip have real mechanical issues to deal with every day. You think your car has problems....

@BobCross - Probably a bit bigger equipment, eh?

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I think they're talking about how quickly the sensor is cycling

@Zaid - I wouldn't have a clue.

3:14 PM
@Zaid Where's your mod submission? :-)
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Whattup

We've been trying to convince him to submit ... still falling on deaf ears, I think ... :o)
@DucatiKiller - Not much, bro.

Dudes
I expect I'll be free later tonight
Will submit soon

@Zaid Right on. We had this discussion almost a year ago and I said that you have to run. So......there you have it.

@DucatiKiller - And since he is, so do you.

@Zaid I'll think of a few more things you 'have to do' as well. Give me a few and I'll submit my list.

3:18 PM
@DucatiKiller - :o)

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Rory got me thinking but I need some quiet time in a Zen Garden to reflect....

@DucatiKiller - Zen garden?

They grow Zen there. I like to go right to the source.

I like to go there with a compressor and an air drill to clean up dirty Honda heads and just participate in the calmness. People always get all uptight though. "oh, your making noise" and "my shakra feels violated" So annoying....

3:23 PM
I've found air chisels work very well in the same situation.

Totally agree. The consistency of the sound is calming.
Perhaps repetitiveness is more apropos

A yup ... Nothing like sheer destruction to make things better in the brain pan.

If someone is 'practicing' Zen it would only stand to reason that you help them and challenge them on their path. How do you get better without a difficulty to overcome? Like a guy air chiseling away in your Zen garden......

@DucatiKiller - Perfection.
Zen perfection.

That's all we're trying to do, right? The long journey that never ends....

3:30 PM
@DucatiKiller you're a riot

@Zaid Your an engineering beast.

Lol, more like a flyweight

@BobCross You just floated in very graciously. You should try out ballet. I think it would suite you.
@Zaid Stronger than I. I stand in your engineering shadow. Which might not be saying much but for the record, it's saying something.

@DucatiKiller TKD actually helps you dancing. Better grace and glutes.... ;-)
Wifi only every now and then

@BobCross Lack of reliable interwebs is about the only thing that makes me crazy.

3:38 PM
@DucatiKiller I am but a needle in a quasar
A proverbial drop in the ocean
@BobCross have you heard of the necklace problem?

@Zaid Not to us. You are a beautiful and unique snowflake.

The necklace problem is a problem in recreational mathematics, solved in the early 21st century. == Formulation == The necklace problem involves the reconstruction of a necklace of n beads, each of which is either black or white, from partial information. A k-configuration in a necklace is a subset of k positions in the necklace; two configurations are isomorphic if one can be obtained from the other by a rotation of the necklace. At stage k of the reconstruction process, the partial information available at that stage is a count, for each k-configuration, of the number of k-configurations that...

@Zaid Your geeky post above is simply more evidence of my 'rightness' regarding knowing you better than you know yourself.

@DucatiKiller - Man, Mech.SE is no place for that Zen stuff I tell yah.

It's a Zen challenge. The air compressor sound in the background is just helping you become better at finding your Zen. It's good for all of us.

3:56 PM
@Zaid nope. I don't really go looking for recreational math. I understand the attraction but I don't really share it.

@BobCross This is just proving my point about @Zaid He's a beast AND he likes recreational math. Dude's next level. Where are his mod answers anyway?

@DucatiKiller I honestly don't think you should pressure people into modding. It's a fair amount of work
There have been days when I come close to yelling at someone. Something along the lines of "you know I'm not getting paid here, right, so maybe ease off on being a dick to me for a while?"
But I take a deep breath, do a lot of push-ups and try to be civil

@BobCross Truly! I'm sure that's the PG version sometimes too.
@BobCross I just had to give him my three lines of support. After that, I'm quiet. Want him to know that I think he would be good at it, like you.

@DucatiKiller what a mean thing to say! I am the expert here and I can safely say that no one wants to be like me! Oooo! I'm getting the shivers just thinking about it!

lmao

Q: 2005 Kia Amanti electronic systems turn on randomly without key in car

Sharon GlennWhat would make my lights flash, radio come on, doors lock and unlock, seats move at random times day and night when you are not in car and key is not in ignition? Also my service engine light is not on to say that I have any problems and it does work, so where does my problem lie?

Hmm, sounds like a 6 year old.

Has anyone here used a DSO Nano for automotive use?
I'm tempted to get one to look at the signal going to an injector

@KevinEvans Have not. I use a windows laptop.
@KevinEvans Which helps you not at all.

4:50 PM
@DucatiKiller I have taken up a silly new hobby - getting people from a particular industry or sport to sign autobiographies of other people in that discipline
It's vaguely amusing
To me, anyway

@RoryAlsop I like that. Would have been cool to have Chuck Yeager sign a Senna or Lauren Bacall biography....lol

@DucatiKiller It's a bit geeky when I'm going to ask Bruce Schneier to sign another cryptographer's book...

@RoryAlsop That could be a great Kodak moment.
@RoryAlsop What security certs to hold in high regard? You like the GIAC?

@DucatiKiller depends on exactly what area. I do tend to like SANS and CREST, but have a look at this:
roryalsop on March 28, 2013

I gave a talk on career planning in Information Security at Abertay University on the 16th of January 2013.

Securi-Tay is an annual security conference organised by students at Abertay and is a very well organised and run event – could put some professional conferences to shame!

Video of my talk

The talk went down very well, with a lot of discussion spinning off afterwards, and the odd additional visitor to Sec.SE

Most of the video should be straightforward, but a couple of the slides may be hard to read so I have included them here: …

@RoryAlsop How about the CISSP?

5:05 PM
yep - it's in there too. I had that for about 10 years before it stopped being useful for me

interesting, how did it lose it's usefullness?

be aware that video was to final year ethical hacking students, so was pitched accordingly. Unfortunately I don't have the equivalent one I delivered to business
@DucatiKiller I don't get as much hands on - I am not in security delivery any more; I'm oversight, so for me my current certs and memberships are more useful
When I was a security consultant, CISSP was excellent on proposals

@RoryAlsop More framework compliance than security remediation?

@DucatiKiller no - I have a little bit of compliance, but really I assess all security decisions/implementations and how they affect the risk to my organisation globally
I then work with risk owners to sort out appetite thresholds
And push for owners and investment to be aligned
oop - got to take biggest kids to swimming. Back soon.

Sounds fun. I did that for Business Continuity for years and years. Changing careers now.
@RoryAlsop Take care, thanks for the answers.

@RoryAlsop Good vid. Watched the whole thing.

@DucatiKiller cool - it's to try and help guide them rather than point them at a specific cert, as things change through careers etc
Most of them start of as penetration testers or forensics folks, but they can go anywhere
@DucatiKiller thanks

@RoryAlsop I liked how you verbally defined the skills required and advised howto interview. The focus on comm skills, etc. I can tell you had a rapt audience. Very consumable presentation.

@DucatiKiller well I mentor a lot of folks at various levels, all round the world, and I've been doing this a long long time :-)
but thanks a lot

7:22 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 - found the ENTJ page: 16personalities.com/entj-personality
:-)

7:48 PM
Is the moderator election chat down?

@Myself no, it's active

right there @Myself :-)
@Myself we've bombarded the candidates. Jump in and throw out some questions.

@Zaid @DucatiKiller strange, I was not able to load it for some minutes

@Myself weird....

@DucatiKiller but now it is fine, just need to read the wall of text :)

8:01 PM
It is a wall of words

8:22 PM
@anonymous2 @Myself @Zaid @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Maybe we should banter in here so we don't over contaminate the election chat with our outlier discussion.

I was thinking the same thing earlier.

I am fine with that

But ... i didn't know how to say it so nicely. More like, "Guys ... get the F out!"

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 It's your inner American saying that.

yes, yes it is.

8:24 PM
@DucatiKiller Good idea. I'll be tuning out soon anyhow.

@anonymous2 @Myself Do you either of you happen to be F1 or MotoGP fans?

@DucatiKiller Afraid not. To be honest, I don't know what either are.

@Zaid Come hither, we switched rooms for our non-election banter.

@DucatiKiller I have never found enthusiasm in that

I will work on converting the both of you over an extended period of time. I'm a fervent fan.

8:26 PM
@Myself, are you standing for the election?
@DucatiKiller What are they?

@anonymous2 F1 is Formula 1 racing. MotoGP is grand prix motorcycle racing.

Oh, okay, I had heard of the F1, then. Not the MotoGP, though.

@anonymous2 - Google "Isle of Mann" and "Motorcycle" ... you'll see what Ducati likes.

@anonymous2 no, I am not. I (guess) have not the needed rp and I prefer more to be the ordinary grunt

8:28 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 and @Zaid Knew this link was coming next.

That one is epic

@Myself Necessary rep? Oops.

But then, even the most mundane thing will look über cool in slo-mo

@DucatiKiller I have been convinced not to try for it, if that was the goal.

Synchronicity between man and machine. Beautiful poetry expressed in the physical world. I can't get enough of it.

8:33 PM
I actually like speed and acceleration, but I would not survive a motorcycle for long
In the first few months I would be careful, then I would myself let go
The place where I live is actually a motorcycle paradise: Lots of curves, beautiful pass roads

@Myself sounds like Scotland

And a lot of accidents

We've got lots of curves, but it comes along with lots of ice, lots of snow, and lots of potholes.

@Myself wow! that's beautiful

8:38 PM
@Myself - Is that all?

@anonymous2 we have lots of wet (but don't tell @BobCross)

Not my photo, just one example

@Myself I want to go there
@Myself Although I don't think I would go fast on that road. I learned the hard way.

@DucatiKiller Those are the dolomites, fairly expensive but beautiful

well......sometimes I learn the hardway.

8:40 PM
@Myself No mountains here. Just plain old limestone

TTFN

@DucatiKiller most of the time it is not the speeding, there are also other people on the streets

@anonymous2 ciao
@Myself Those 'other people'. They just keep getting in the way!

let me dig something out
That is my favorite one
Check out the album
I threw some of my photos together

@Myself Simply stunning. Although snow scares me. It's very cold.
beautiful

8:46 PM
That is the good side of living here, the downside is that it is quite a backwater
@DucatiKiller the glacier should scare you, there are a lot of hidden cracks there.

I've heard that the glaciers are going away. Not from Americans though.
:-)

thats why you try to start on dawn, the snow is stronger when it is cold

@all I almost went and nuked the room with dystopian political rant. I'll apologize for almost doing it.
@Myself I've done a lot of aiding in Colorado. years ago, in my 20's, but not much on ice. Just a couple of times. It freaks me out....and like I said. It's cold.

@DucatiKiller "aiding in Colorado". I do not understand that

Aid climbing

8:53 PM
Ok, got it. Ty

@DucatiKiller I guess @Zaid has also some talent in poetry :)

@Myself We have proof that you are correct!

On a side note: The neighbors advised me that some suspicious people got spotted snooping out houses in the vicinity. Should I not be on the chat tomorrow it means that my laptop got stolen

@Myself When I hear that from neighbors I get all weird and stay up looking out the window in hopes of catching them.
It's not my best quality.

9:08 PM
@DucatiKiller Neither mine, but I made some experiences that made me invest in an alarm device and an insurance

That sounds totally reasonable. Not my approach though. I get fervent. It's gross.

How is security at your place (in general)?

At home?

The location where you live

Phoenix Arizona
North Phoenix to be exact
Yes, it's very safe. I live next to a golf course. The police 'protect' us very well.

9:18 PM
Sounds great
Here the police also tries their best

I'd prefer to be more rural than suburban but it's nice and I can't complain.
The Police protect the wealthy and not-brown people in the US very well.
I will stifle my political rant again.

@DucatiKiller - Thanks Brother.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Yeah, you need a fuckin hug bro. You deserve more than this. You are a living breather human being! I just wish the world could be a better place where you have the rep that you deserve!

@DucatiKiller - Hah.

Bring it in....let's hug it out.

Consider it done.
Virtually ... :o)
You just wait ... I'll have to go to Phoenix sometime ... you'll see. Then it's all over but the cryin'.

Just weeping out of joy
snot dripping weeping joy

11:45 PM
I can hear you all the way on the east coast ...

It's my weeping. My powerful weeping.

And all this time I thought it was just rain ... that's kinda gross, now that I think about it.

Yeah, with my DNA all scattered through it. Everywhere.

Spreading the seed, eh?
Ewwwwwwwww.

Yes, my seed, everywhere. In ALL the liquid. Falling from the sky. It's really beautiful. I'm getting a little verklempt.

11:49 PM
You better go see a doctor, then.

How could I have know that my day could turn out like this. Just did not see this conversation coming.
Life is beautiful my friend. It gives us awkward and strange gifts.

180lbs?
Oh ... one sec

I haven't had a 200 day for about three weeks ... today, 215, with 70 not counted ... when it rains it pours.

Yeah, I've pulling 100's at best for a few weeks. The community is killing it with the swell answers.

Yes they are.

So I've been layin back quite a bit. Just editing like wildman on days of, hopefully, low traffic.

11:58 PM
I've been laying back as well. I saw your edit count the other day. About twice what mine is ... great job!
Well, not quite, but almost twice.

It's a strange thing, I want to fix a bunch of my old questions but it jams them into Active. I prefer it just stay wherever it is so it doesn't look like I'm rep hounding.
Some of my spelling errors are making me blush.
