12:31 AM
Hi @IanC - I've also been crushed for time. Back in the day, I lived in this room. Now I've forced @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 to sit in for me.... ;-)
So my big thing from real life today was that I found out that the office that I've supposed to move to is open and will transfer over my phone next Wednesday. I immediately said "So if I move now, no one can call me at my desk until next week? Sold!"

@BobCross - ROFL!

12:47 AM
You have no idea.
Plus, I left the passive aggression of one floor for the as yet unknown baggage of another floor. Yeah, I'll take my chances!

@BobCross - Yah, the grass may just be greener there ...

Not really. I'll be sitting with people that I work with on a regular basis. I won't be sitting with people who complain that I get paid more just because of all my boring experience and hard work and willingness to travel all over the world and.... ;-p

6 hours later…
6:35 AM
This is doing the rounds on Reddit: reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/comments/7srpwi/…

3 hours later…
9:54 AM
@BobCross yeah, last month has been a little rushed, balancing work, an extra part time job, a freelance project and surfing (which is the reason behind all other 3 haha)
but hopefully things will set in and I'll be less suffocated with lack of time
what do you work with?

10:32 AM
@IanC today, I’m going to be working with setting up my new office, rerouting all the cables that I removed yesterday and getting back to where I can write code!

2 hours later…
12:04 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I find it quite amusing that anyone could consider an F250 'small'
by European standards it's utterly huge!

1 hour later…
1:09 PM
@JPhi1618 Hey, yeah the RV. I never see those things around here (Netherlands) but it's basically a home on wheels. Would love to travel the world in those things one day
@IanC Hi Ian! Welcome, yeah most of us check in every few hours, comment and that's mostly it haha :)

@BobCross with most things in life, you're trading one set of challenges for another-- the trick is finding a situation with challenges that are manageable
Also, good morning everyone! :)

@Ceshion afternoon :)

@motosubatsu How's it going?

1:28 PM
@Ceshion not bad...wish it would stop bloody raining though.. how about you?

kinda the same, I'm ready for it to be warm again-- a sun lamp and a heater are no substitute for the real thing

@Ceshion amen to that.. tbh the temperature isn't the thing that bothers me all that much but the rain (and wind) drives me up the wall!

@Ceshion good afternoon :)

@motosubatsu I can't handle the cold at all, it just destroys my mood-- I definitely think living closer to the equator is in my future
@Myself hello! how are you?

@Ceshion Afternoon!

1:36 PM
@Ceshion I am fine, sitting in my office, a bit of a cold but no biggie. And yes, I agree with you about the cold
On the other side we have mountains here, so going sledging with the kids is a plus about the cold

@Paramone hi! how are the repairs holding up, everything good?
@Myself the one upside to winter is winter sports, around here it's snowmobiling
our boss will try to get pretty much anyone to buy a snowmobile when they join the company

@Ceshion snowmobiles have always struck me as being kinda awesome... not sure I'd mange to spend any significant time on one without hurting myself though!

@Ceshion so either you are making snowmobiles or the company is not easily reachable :)

that said I do snowboard and wasn't put off by breaking my collarbone

They're really fun, but on the other hand you have to deal with the cold and visors freezing over and fun stuff like that
and it's more like he just likes snowmobiling and he's a people person so he wants to go on trips together
@motosubatsu I've always wanted to snowboard-- I picked up longboarding pretty much instantly, I wonder if it'd be the same with that
I think between skating and bicycling when I was young and motorcycle riding now, most balance-based sports like that would probably be pretty easy to learn

1:46 PM
@Ceshion I've never longboarded but from what I know yeah there would be significant overlap in the skills
I can highly recommend snowboarding.. ok sure you have the cold to deal with but to be honest if you get some decent gear then you'll stay pretty warm since it's quite an active sport

that makes sense, you stay warm just because you're moving and insulated

1:59 PM
@Ceshion oh totally. At the same time, it’s good to have the grunt work every now and then. Wear the pants with reinforced knees because you’re going to be crawling around pulling cable. No big thoughts, just make things neat. So relaxing!

@BobCross that is nice, that's pretty much what I use working on vehicles for-- just some relaxing physical labor

The guy who normally has to do all the moving and infrastructure just showed up and was all “OMG you are my favorite person! You handled this all yourself?! This is great!”
He is normally running trying to catch up and I just have him like two days in his schedule.

2:18 PM
@NickC - I can see that, lol!
@Ceshion - You really need to head south, dear lady! :o)

2:44 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 I really do, I'm thinking about California or Arizona

@Ceshion yeah.. when I was 'boarding in Tahoe some years ago I ended up unzipping my jacket because I was actually overheating! Like skiing it's an activity that is far more intensive a work out then it looks

people always counter with "but it's so hot, it's like 120 degrees in Arizona" and for me that just sounds perfect
@motosubatsu I mean it's considered an extreme sport for a reason-- most of those aren't exactly lazy activities

@Ceshion - I like Arizona ... with CA trying to secede from the Union, I don't know if that'd be such a great place to move :o)

3:01 PM
@vini_i - I wouldn't expect your "explanation" to get very far with the other user concerning disk vs drum brakes.

Q: 1994 chevy transmission is not accelarating pass 70 mph

Willie JeffersonI have a 1994 Chevy Silverado 1500 and when I get up to 70 mph, the rpm starts bouncing. I don't loose power but it fluctuates.

Does anyone understand exactly what this guy is asking? I tried to get some information out of him, but it seem contradictory (or at least muddled).

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah clear as mud that one
it sounds like he's running into a poorly implemented speed limiter but it's hard to be sure with what little info we have

I was trying to figure out if this is an engine issue or a transmission issue, but his replies leave me scratching my head.
He's not really giving us any direction.
Since he's listed as "Unregistered" we'll probably never hear from him again.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 most likely
IIRC the Silverado had a limiter that cut in at 100mph so it could be a case of (a) that malunctioning (b) adjusted or replaced limiter from a previous life as a work truck
but that's just guess work with out further info
I had wondered about a transmission issue (maybe unable to get into top gear) but I'd expect a loss of power at that point (even if only briefly) as the 'box tries to shift and gets "neutral"

Bouncing RPM would suggest limiter, no doubt.

@BobCross you work as a programmer?

3:47 PM
@IanC - Per his profile: Computer scientist working at [A Facility] developing [Systems] that [Do Stuff] at [Places].

@Paramone Thanks! I'm probably going to be coming and going once in a while too :)

I'm pretty sure he actively codes, though.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 that's very revealing lol

@IanC - I found it amusing! LOL!

I like coding a little bit too, though I don't make a living out of it, been trying to make some cash with some webdev freelancing but since I'm only starting to try this now things have been kind of slow

3:50 PM
I can imagine. Good luck to you, though. I'm sure there's plenty of work to go around.

thanks! I got one going on now, a little underpriced compared to market price but I think everyone have done some cheap jobs before building a portifolio

I think that's a spot on attitude.

I'm struggling a little with the design part of it though, I make all the coding nicely, but I sometimes need some repetitive trial and error to find out what looks good and what doesn't
but that's just an alternative line of work I'm trying to open, my actual job is mooring ships at the docks haha
what about you @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2?

I've been down that road before. I've always been a "function over form" kinda person, whether it's coding or cars.
@IanC - That's a true dichotomy!

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 why not "function with form"?

3:56 PM
@IanC - I manage an enterprise which supports about 14k people.
@Ceshion - What I mean by "function over form" is, the function always comes first. While I like things to look good, they have to function well first or it's a no-go. A car can look like a million bucks, but if it's a dog at the strip or race track, it's still a dog.
Doesn't mean I'm against the "form" portion of it, I just prefer it to work well first.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 agreed.. I appreciate nice aesthetics as much as the next guy, probably more in fact but if it's not any good at at it's actual job then I'm not interested

that makes sense, of course, I just kind of look at the ideal as striving for things having form that's built around the way they work

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 yeah, but it's cool, allows me to surf quite often which is what I want for myself. I'd be satisfied if I wasn't a bit worried about how that job is going to be in a few years.. That's why I'm trying to open some new possibilities

like full integration between the two

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 that sounds like a huge responsability!

3:59 PM
@Ceshion that's the ideal :)

@IanC - It's not too bad. I have a ton of support. I just have to make decisions is all.

mind you I probably shouldn't be considered an authority on car aesthetics - I appear to the only person in the world who things Alfa's are barf-inducing to look at

@IanC - We work the enterprise 24/7. There are other people who do my same job. We rotate through on a shift schedule. When I go home, I leave work behind, which I like a whole bunch.

you mean you don't have to bring work home?

Not at all.

4:02 PM
honestly I think there's no excuse for how cobbled-together race cars look for example-- I don't doubt for a second that you could achieve the same effects in an elegant way, the only reason we don't do that from my perspective is just because people think cost matters more

It's a beautiful thing.

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 that's been one of the biggest upsides to going contract - as far as I;m concerned work only exists while I'm there :)

yeah, that's one of the few advantadges of my job too, when the clock is out it's out

@Ceshion I suppose in the world of racing the only things that matter are maximising performance and minimizing cost
you do see the odd beautiful race car though

@Ceshion - Personally, I think it depends on what you're wanting the car to do. If you have one of those unlimited budget race cars (ie: high paying sponsors), you definitely want the car to look good, because it reflects on the sponsor.

4:03 PM
shame the world is currency-based then, else we might be able to just focus on maximizing performance
(and aesthetics)

If you are just racing to race, it's a whole different world.

right, I get that-- the world already works that way for the rich ;P

@Ceshion it's one of the things I like about the F1 world during it's periods of being flush with cash - you get beautiful racing machines that look as good as they are fast

@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 to be honest, what bothers me on my job is that the company I work in has a terrible environment that makes people lazy and don't recognize efforts. Things I like about though is not bringing work home, working in shifts and having my day offs in different days like in the middle of the week (when most people are working, so I can surf with less of a crowd)

@motosubatsu It doesn't hurt that good aero usually looks good.

4:06 PM
I don't even mind my salary is low, if the things that really bothers me were fixed

except those machines with tons of tiny fins sticking out everywhere-- why not build that aero effect into the body to begin with? (because it would cost too much to completely redesign it)

@IanC - Job satisfaction goes a long way.
@Ceshion - Because the little fins sticking out work? The fins are what affect the aero ... not sure you could design it into the body any differently.

Not quite what I mean-- I mean more like why aren't they part of the body, you always see them just bolted on, like you know they weren't there originally

Fair enough

@Ceshion at least partly that's down to the regs controlling what you can have where in terms of aero
but others are indeed down to cost/time - more tightly integrating changes to the aero package into the monocoque would mean redesigning it, re-crash testing it, and then building replacements for the chassis you already have and this is all rather expensive and time consuming
and if the change turns out not to be effective or is only effective at certain circuits you are only going to be further increasing these

4:13 PM
@Ceshion what model is that bike of yours?

I guess I'm kind of off in dreamland today-- thinking about how even the concept of currency and the high priority on personal ownership is such a limiting factor for overall achievement-- I wrote up a whole page-long essay on things like that earlier to share it with my partners who I was talking to about it, so it's still solidly in my mind
it's an '07 Kawi ZZR600

@Ceshion gotcha... nothing wrong with a bit of idealism :)

well, page long in 10pt single spaced Arial so?

@Ceshion why not? it obviously matters to you

@Ceshion I think I never saw that one around here, maybe they never sold it in my country

4:15 PM
Yeah, I have to keep re-upping on both idealism and realism, I think you have to keep the two balanced to get anything done
@IanC it's the same design as the 99-02 ZX6R

@Ceshion yep... balance is the key.

@Ceshion now that one you can find around here! Bike looks nice, probably rides nice too :)
only Kawi I ever rode was a Ninja 250 and a Vulcan 900, but just for a test ride of a couple of blocks
wish I could have tested them on the road

@motosubatsu it matters enough that I kind of want to spend my life trying to get us closer to the ideal through technology? it's a whole thing-- I'll spare you the details haha
@IanC I like both of those, the 600 is like the 250, just a little taller and a little heavier in corners (and quite a bit faster)

@Ceshion that's the ticket... the sort of "idealist" I have no time for is the sort that just sits around whining about how the world isn't perfect but never does anything about it (or for the full experience those that use said imperfection as an excuse not to do anything at all)
(sorry that was a bit soap-boxy)

@motosubatsu - Spot on. If you don't want to try and fix anything, shut-yo-trap.

4:22 PM
I feel that, and I think that sort of idealism comes about out of a feeling of helplessness, which is something that's easy to feel these days
The world is terrifying and overwhelming to our brains and feels completely out of control in a visceral way
It's easy to think "I'm just this one person, what am I going to do about that?"

@motosubatsu you see a lot of it these days, it's some sort of hypocrisy
@Ceshion If I had one of those speed bikes, I'd probably want to take some time to improve my corners a lot, getting the confidence to lean further out

that is, the problems are so easy to see, but because we're so aware we're just 1/7,000,000,000 of the human community given we're constantly flooded by input from the rest of it, it's also easy to feel like your 1 can't do shit about that 7,000,000,000
and in a way, it can't-- we have to work together, really work together, on a global scale, to solve those problems
@IanC I still have work to do on it, I haven't gotten to where my knee touches yet

@Ceshion true enough... only very rare individuals are in a position to affect more than a tiny portion of the world's population. We can affect our own little corner of it though
and helping/making things better for those you can is worthwhile in it's own right

@Ceshion I think it's more a matter of principles, doing something because it's the right thing to do, not because the action itself is making a difference in global scale

to quote a favorite fictional character of mine.. "everybody counts or nobody counts"

4:31 PM
But that's how change happens, we went from single-celled organisms forming cell colonies, to complex organisms forming villages, to villages growing and banding together to form nations, if you follow that pattern clustering together as a planet seems inevitable
and starting small is not nearly a problem

@Ceshion yep.. if enough people "start small" then pretty soon the cumulative effect is substantial

Well @IanC I think the idea we need to accomplish that is the idea that benefiting any part of the global community is as good as benefiting yourself
like-- following the concept that our communities are similar to the cell colonies that were in our early evolution, and therefore similar to the different parts of our own body, think about that your digestive system doesn't think about the request from your hand to give it energy to move, the same way the hand doesn't think about the request to feed it
they don't need to send something to "pay" for it, it just happens, and it isn't because they both benefit, but they do and so does the whole organism
if you think about it that way, it seems like sharing freely amongst ourselves and our communities is both beneficial to the individual parts as well as the system as a whole
sharing isn't something we should have to force people to do, it needs to just be something that people do, freely and willingly
</soapbox>

yeah, I know what you mean, but it's a hard road to drive people away from individualistic behavior, specially because it's kind of instinctive too

I'm not sure I believe it's actually instinctive, humans are naturally very, very social-- but we teach a lot of behaviors that discourage free socializing because doing that benefits the people in power

4:47 PM
@Ceshion while I'm not dismissing the idea of a currency-free society on the basis of it (I have other reasons for why I would do that) your analogy doesn't hold up to society - the "free" exchange of resources and services between the digestive system and the hand works because they exist as part of a much more cohesive whole. Barring contrived circumstances (i.e. in a lab) a stomach cannot exist in isolation and nor can a hand

we form families and communities so readily if we just let ourselves is what I mean
but early, early on they were just clusters of different kinds of smaller organisms that could exist independently

@Ceshion humans are a co-operative/collaborative species - but there is a limit to the sizes of such communities before they naturally seperate

the only reason they can't now is because they've become so integrated over time
and they can separate, of course, just like the organs in that analogy, it's the idea of all of the separate groups forming a cohesive whole

@Ceshion true...ish, but that process took millions, upon millions of years and such combining only continues until an approximately optimal level has been reached

I guess my belief is that that combining never stopped, it just changed (went from single-celled organisms clustering together to the EU forming, for example) and that if we make a conscious effort to continue it with the goal in mind of getting to the next stage of it, we can accelerate the process greatly, especially given we have the technology now to both communicate and share so quickly and so broadly in the form of the internet
(like our nervous system) or our shipping systems (like our bloodstream)

4:53 PM
it may well be continuing - we just won't be able to tell for a few million years or so

I guess I'd just like to see if we can't make it happen sooner

biologically we can't cope with the size of the "societies" we have now
so we need that to play catch up

That's what I want to do, use the internet as a tool to promote sharing and communication between groups in a way that doesn't require nearly as much cognitive overhead or cause so much information overload as actually seeing every other individual

@Ceshion that's definitely a worthwhile avenue of investigation.. there's significant biological limitations that would hamper it's effectiveness, but I wouldn't say that they are reasons not to try

Definitely! I have that idea and the start of a plan, but it's continuing to develop over time-- first I have to learn a lot more about the technology I plan on using for it
machine learning, sociology and psychology, a healthy bit more about programming, and so on
hence why I'm headed to school :)
(next semester available)
kiiiinda wish I hadn't dropped out when I was 16, but also I probably wouldn't have survived anyway

5:02 PM
@Ceshion <shrug /> beating yourself up over the past is a waste of time.. we can't change it, all we can do is do the best we can from here.

5:15 PM
it's true! you learn from it and move on, which is another concept that scales well in theory

5:53 PM
@Ceshion I vote for idealism whenever possible. Realism will take of itself. We need more people who say “that bar is too low. Let’s see if we can clear something much higher!”
I’m also a big advocate for people who want to invest their own sweat to make the world a better place. That’s always a convincing argument: “I’m doing a bunch of hard work here. You don’t have to help but I’d appreciate if you’d get out of the way.”

6:20 PM
I don't mind others making this world a better place. The thing to think about, though, is what one person thinks of as a "better place" may not be seen the same way in others' eyes. We cannot expect others to jump on board with our idealism. As Bob says though, they should not stand in our way of doing it.

7:19 PM
that's true! and my goal is to try it, and if it works well then just show people that
not everyone is going to be on board right away even if everyone is on board eventually
it helps to see it working for real first

7:34 PM
@Ceshion - That is very true. Many people take the "wait and see" stance, but come around once the ball is rolling.

One of the metrics that I use is “is this person working for benefits that they will never personally receive? Are they working purely for the benefit of people that aren’t them?” That’s a big discriminator.

@BobCross - Meh. I believe people can work for others and in the process make things better for themselves. The person can have helping others as their main goal, but I don't say they cannot be trying to help themselves in the process. Helping yourself while helping others is a win/win, but for you to be helping others just to benefit yourself is a non-starter.

good evening

Case in point: my dad did a lot of reading for the blind, audiobooks before they were a thing. Complex topics like biology textbooks. He said it was super hard, especially when the diagrams got complicated. We don’t have any blind family. We didnt know any blind people in our social circle. He just wanted to do something of value.
I think the pay he received basically reimbursed him for the gas that he used to get to the recording office.

7:50 PM
Please don't misunderstand: Doing for others, just for others (and not yourself) is absolutely a great thing. Doing for others and helping yourself in the process is not necessarily a bad thing.
@Myself - Hello, Kind Sir!

How are you?

I'm good. Back on Days for a few weeks.

8:02 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 @BobCross the whole idea I'm basing my work around is paying it forward, to help others who need it so they'll be there to help you when you need it-- and need can be as simple as "need a dresser moved" or "need my oil changed" or as big as "I need a place to live" or "I need to feed my family"
but for the process, over time, to become natural and not about paying for anything, just doing for others and knowing they'll also do for you
you just have to get from here to there somehow c:
(that is to say, the "somehow" is incentivizing at first, but then weaning off that once the benefit from functioning as part of a system is realized)

Not a bad ideal or ideology at all.
I have no problem helping others. I've learned a long time ago, I can never expect anything in return. If I do, I've only let myself in for a bit letdown, because most people will not reciprocate (not out of giving, anyway).

right, and right now anyone can easily choose to give selflessly, but nobody can feel secure that others would do the same and people even choose not to because of that

Heh. It’s like the office phone. No one ever calls to urgently tell you “Hey, great job! Thanks very much!” It’s all “I’ve lit my hair on fire! OMG! What do I do? The pain of my burning hair!”

exactly!
hello 3pm, hello afternoon exhaustion

8:26 PM
@BobCross - There are no nerve endings in hair ... the scalp might feel the pain, but the hair, not so much ;-)

9:08 PM
@Myself - Great question! Lots of detail :o) We like it like that!
1
Q: Engine firing up but dying immediately

MyselfThe car in question is a ~15year old Opel Corsa C: The engine starts immediately, without any problems. After 2-5 seconds of running the engine just cuts off. There is a blinking CEL, but my reader claims there are to trouble codes set. Performed checks / noticed symptoms: The fuel pump seems ...

9:29 PM
@Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2 Thank you. I hope it won't be the BCM..

9:53 PM
@Myself - No doubt. It might just be the system lost the key. Then all that would need to be done is for the system to "re-learn" the key (as long as you have a secondary "good key")

10:20 PM
I'm headed home in a few. I'll catch up later (hopefully). You all have a great evening if I don't see you :o)

soon I'll be getting ready for work, last day of graveyard shift and then going for my surf trip :D
see you around @Pᴀᴜʟsᴛᴇʀ2, have a nice evening!
