1:26 AM
@DucatiKiller Hey bro. The kids riding a bike? They should be starting earlier imo. ;)

1:44 AM
@JonathanMusso I kind of felt the same way but didn't want to point out what a crappy parent that guy is.
lol

10 hours later…
11:29 AM
@DucatiKiller Training wheels must be off at 2 years old! Haha. I will write up an answer for that question this morning I hope.
Good morning everyone.

A: Should I get the tire checked?

VerzloThanks for the image. Depending on how deep that tear/slit is, you may have to either get it checked or patched. You can take a note of the pressure in the tire as it sits currently, then in a few days check if it has any loss (significant loss) of pressure, if so, then may have breached the ca...

Is this answer for real? Does anyone really ever patch a scratch on the sidewall, because I've never heard of that...

2:50 PM
@JPhi1618 I've seen people plug a sidewall before, but..never fix cracks..

Plug like because of a hole, right?
Not a patch on the outside of a tire. Never on the outside.
And mere mortals can't really patch the inside of a tire because there's no way to get the tire off on you're own.

Yea, a hole. Never just patch the outside.
However, I hear duct tape is pretty strong.

Ha, yea. Just make sure you buff the tire clean before using it.

3:10 PM
Good morning all! (Or whatever greeting fits your time zone lol)

Hey Stew. Nice CAN answer.

lol ty ty
It's a CANned answer, but someone had to.. :)

I wasn't sure if the guy really wanted to plug two wires into his PC or what...
I guess it was obvious to me that you'd need some actual hardware for the interface, but I guess he didn't get that?

He wants a short and easy solution for connecting CAN to his PC so that he can create a testbed for CAN simulator / testors, and what he doesn't realize is that's just a silly idea
Yeah, you need a CAN controller because otherwise you would have to bit bang the wire interface and that's just more work than it's worth.
I haven't looked but I bet a CAN bus transciever is probably $5 in single quantities, tops..
But I could be wrong, I haven't actually looked for one.

I bet they're cheap. It's not like there aren't a million of them running around on the roads.

3:17 PM
But, considering that every car made since the 90's has more than a dozen or two in it, they have been made in quantities of millions and not changed a lot
Exactly
And I bet there is an eval board for them that would allow him to avoid hardware design and debug

Great minds think alike and all of that :)

But the idea of creating a simulator to test a simulator is just silly. And will bring many problems when trying this against the real world for the first time.
Should just connect to the real world once, not after creating a step inbetween
You assume that I think at all... bad assumption.. Given some of my decisions over the last n years, there is little evidence to back up the idea of actual thought happening...
Good lessons learned, but lots of stupid tax paid... lol
I'm hoping that the author of that post is not a native English speaker from the US. If he is, whatever grammar school he went to should be closed... If English is not his first language, then all is forgiven.. Surely his English is WAY better than my <whatever language is used where he is from>

How was your weekend?

Too short... But was nice overall, and your's?

Got roped in to "helping" my neighbor replace his front door.
He didn't really know how to do it, and knew that I did. So I replace the door, and he handed me things.

3:30 PM
lmao So glad you helped him do it.. lol Been there.. I was the IT department for the family or a while.

I've avoided being the IT guy, but I like home improvement as a hobby, so I let my guard down a little more when people want "a little help". In all honestly, I pretty much knew what I was getting into.

I figured.. and I do the same thing. It helps them out and that's always a good thing. Neighbor helping neighbor :)
I actually like doing it. Exposes me to more situations too which helps my experience in these things.

Yep, now he owes me a big one.

And there's that too lol

And our houses have the same builder, so now I know what to expect when I do it on my own house.

3:35 PM
Was it more than just pull the pins, fit the new dor in the hole and replace the pins?
Uh oh, shhhhh, "he' is here... :)
Hi @DucatiKiller

No, it was the frame and all. Went from a builder's door to a custom hardwood door.

Oh! Yeah, that's more work..
Did you go for the full security package? Long screws and lots of them to "weld" the frame to the frame of the house

Happy 15:xx UTC all

I was watching "Best Defense" and they had whole show on doors and locks

Hey @stewart

3:37 PM
lmao :) Hello @DucatiKiller
How are you doing today?

Dealing with crybabies which makes me feel powerful

We did use some 4" screws. That and the hardwood frame will make a strong combo.
The lockset he purchased was a little sub-par, but whatever.

@JPhi1618 Thats good, I love the idea of some dirtbag trying to bust into my house and breaking his shoulder on my door... :)

@JPhi1618 had an SV1000 in the garage this weekend. My kids friend had the motor lock up on him on the freeway.

Yeah, the sub-par locks can be broken in under 30 sec

3:39 PM
What was the diagnosis on the engine?

SV1000? A motorcycle?
Why yes it is... lol

@cdunn It was a brand of locks that I was interested in seeing, so that was good. Now I know to not buy those.

What was the brand?

It was like a "builders" brand they sell at one of the "Seconds and Surplus" stores around here.
I'm not even sure of the name. They look good, but the mechanism is no-frills.

Yeah, the kind with a hollow shell? They can be busted open in short order...
But you took care of the usual weakest link, the frame. I need to beef up both my frame and the lock..

3:41 PM
He took the springs out of the back of the clutch basket and had pins welded in there. Made it a solid clutch. One of the pins (basically a cylinder of steel. It got caught in between the clutch basket and the engine, locked everything up.

The deadbolt didn't even have a collar to keep it centered in the bore. I had to eyeball it and tighten it a few times before I got it right and it didn't bind.

He said he was going between 75 and 85mph when it all locked up. He didn't crash but almost got hit by a few cars.

@JPhi1618 so a couple taps with a dead blow hammer and it's done... yikes...
@DucatiKiller glad he wasn't hurt, yikes

@DucatiKiller, interesting. I don't know anything about a "solid clutch"... I'll put that on my list of learnin'.

If it's solid, is it really a clutch anymore?

3:43 PM
It does seem like an oxymoron.

@stewart It takes a 'shock absorber' mechanism out of the clutch basket
doesn't make the clutch a single piece
I'll put a pic of the 'pin' up in a few.

Ahhhh ok, yeah that makes more sense. So his goal was better response at the cost of becoming a lot more "twitchy"?
Nuts, donuts to make, back in a while :)

@DucatiKiller, did it tear anything up? Is he looking at a new clutch?
Good morning, @RoryAlsop. Or afternoon.

it cracked the cases of the motor at the secondary shaft and bent the shaft

Ouch...
I guess there's no coming back from that.

3:47 PM
yeah, it's roasted. I'm sitting next to the motor right now.

What's he going to do?

buy a new/used motor and jam it in there.

Can you just get a "new" motor?
Ok, cool.

There's a place in town that buys totalled bikes and parts them out. Basically a junk yard that give 60 day warranties on their motors.

Any maybe a new rear tire?

3:48 PM
LOL....yes, it has a big flat spot on it

I heard a place around here that started advertising on the radio... It's called Crashed Toys.
They have a semi-monthly auction where they sell off insurance write offs.

I've found some real gems in junkyards.
I bought my kids 'race bike' at a junk yard

4:02 PM
@JPhi1618 When you do a hardwood door how do you compensate for all the extra weight so it will stay straight in the long term? The 4" screws?

@DucatiKiller, Yea, heavier screws, making sure all the shims are very tight. And in this case, the door had an equally nice hardwood frame, so it will stand up to the weight very well.
The hinges even had bearings in them to make the door close easier.

So, frame replacement and longer screws. did you tear out the top drywall above the door and put in a heavier 'header' so the door doesn't rattle the house when you close it hard?
bearings on the hinges, never seen that. Not that I've seen a lot.

The "wall" that the door was on is just large enough to create the entryway, so it was pretty solid.
They are used on heavy doors. I've always had cheap doors, so I've never used them either.
I have an impact driver that made the 4" screws possible, but it took everything it had.

I was just told on Sunday that we 'need' a nice hardwood door.

Even with pre-drilling... One stopped with like an 1" more to go, and I figured it must have been hitting a nail or something because it would just stop all of a sudden.
Just used a shorter one there...
It all feels very solid now that it's in. Took us like 5 hours to do including the demo and hardware.
He still has to do the trim.

4:17 PM
5 hours seems pretty efficient to me
4" is a pretty long screw. I would have thought you would have had more issues than just one of the screws

Yea, I just wasn't expecting to spend all day on it, so it really seemed to drag on.
Me too! That impact driver is great.

Battery driven impact? like a dewalt or air?
BAM

18v, really just made for screws.

I have a 14.4v dewalt, it's meh...
18v, hell yeah
Those hinges are awesome...

I've noticed the black metal dust from my hinges rubbing (normal), and I'd like them on my exterior doors just for that...
Or, you know, to eliminate that.

4:24 PM
makes sense

Man, that PNG with transparency of the impact driver looks good in the post.

makes me want one. I've used my air impact with a phillips on the end in house occaisionally because the 14.4v dewalt just wasn't up to muster
PITA with an air hose drug through the whole house

I knew that "why use fossil fuels" question was going to make it to HNQ...
I actually decided to post an answer with a chart just to try and get votes, lol.

I think that exhaust one might too. Enough people have piled on to that one....enough that it could make it in.

Doing very well so far!

4:26 PM
saw that. the rep train cometh for you.
I don't think the exhaust question has a good answer yet. more answers may come and push it into HNQ

Q: Making a custom exhaust

EChan42I drive a 1990's Citroen BX TGE16 with no o2 sensors or anyhing fancy on the exhaust as far as I can tell. My exhaust is all rattly most surely from rust and age so I'm planning on changing soon. Thing is, with such a simple exhaust... Could I comission a local metal working buissness to make a ...

It is in the HNQ

Lol at the "Ignore what @Zaid said"
Who is that guy anyway? What does he know :)

yeah, I lol'd on that too.

Lol

@Zaid We can corner that guy for you and throw quarters at his head while he cowers. Just say the word.

Oh, hi Zaid!

4:30 PM
He contradicted himself in the comments btw
I know people who have driven around for 2-3 days without an exhaust without any issues, just make sure you don't stop for long periods of time because the fumes will leak into the cabin. The flexi-pipe may be attached between your cat and what looks like a gasket on the image — user2649305 1 hour ago

lol....yes he did.

He contradicted the fundamental fabric of the site trying to call you out :)

I don't need to say anything

Don't EVER do that....unless....

Yea, I didn't read enough to see that contradiction, but it is funny. "Ignore that Zaid nonsense unless the car isn't moving constantly..."

4:32 PM
Indeed, not worth it....but throwing quarters at his head while he cowers...??? You can just stare at him while you do it.

I don't want anyone here to comment on his answer. Just let it be

no worries....I wouldn't
unless @JPhi1618 is holding him down.

Ha

this is too good

Q: Food with no poop

OddDeerWe plan to go on a three day hike (two nights). The amount of food is no problem of course, but we want to avoid the big-game-toilet (aka defecation) while on the trail. Which kind of food comes into question?

That title is an HNQ magnet

That's quite amusing

4:37 PM
Yea, I saw that. Someone will edit the title after a while to make it less click-bait. They always do.
And is pooping the woods that big of a deal? Especially for someone comfortable enough to spend 3 days out there?

Sounds like the hiker has some outdoor poop fear to me.

"Cruisers appear to require fewer repairs than other types of motorcycles, with just a 15 percent failure rate by the fourth year of ownership."
Maybe because they are all Garage Queens?
Meaningless comparisons...

eh? Where's that?

The consumer reports article linked on the "what electric parts does a bike need" question.

So cruisers across manufacturers are claimed to be more reliable? Sounds like a very fishy claim.

4:42 PM
Time-based repair metrics are dumb.
That'd be like trying to say that boats are the most reliable winter transportation because they never break down in the winter.

agreed, just read that part of the article. makes sense that a dirtbike/adventure touring MC is going to take a beating whereas the cruiser is going to....cruise.
lol...yes to the boat statement.....

Yup. Them and their damn
pizza at the office today... talk about feeding frenzy.

I don't know, I rather like their rating system. Not perfect, but better than nothing..
Pizza at the office, piranha would eat less in bloddied water... lol
and be neater about it..

4:57 PM
it's really just a typical 5 star system...

I'm a little gob smacked at the guy who called out @Zaid and didn't even have the stones to do it from an account that wasn't anonymous... Cuz that's the best way to have credibility.. lol
It is, I just find it easier to get an overall sense of the data when it's color coded like that

Is red good or bad tho?

Red is good, black is bad

@DucatiKiller, this is on my "Most Ridiculous" list now...

Q: Students keep farting during my classes. How can I stop them?

Karen AngeloMy students keep farting while I am going over important theorems and homework problems on the chalkboard. The smell is horrible; it's like a mixture of hot sulfur mixed in with Chipotle burritos, which I am guessing is what many of them are eating before attending my class. (We have a Chipotle n...

Stop teaching 3rd grade?

haha....I'm super close friends with a school board member. They will love this!

5:02 PM
He should really just stop teaching afternoon classes.

I'm sure his boss will be pleased by that demand.
I threw in on the exhaust question with a picture in my answer.
1
A: Making a custom exhaust

DucatiKillerPossibilities Yes! Absolutely you can have this done. The quality of work may vary depending on the level of experience of the shop you commission to do the work but you could end up with something like this, if you want. I would not remove the entire exhaust and take it to a shop. How ar...

I think the picture will point the rep train at me. We'll see.

Yep, in the question with answers that have no picture, the one with a picture is king.

Plus I told him he will die, so I'm saving his life.
Adding the 'next level' of drama and being a nanny to him might get me the socialist vote.
@Zaid It would be interesting if you added a graph to your answer with an honorable mention to physics so we can see what people gravitate to more. Pictures OR graphs and physics.

And it stomps the troll answer, so it's only a good thing

@stewart Agreed

5:08 PM
Does Citroen make anything but tiny, slow, crap boxes with 40HP? putting a custom exhaust on a rat with a wheel seems like money poorly spent...
@DucatiKiller What ever happened to @kevin btw lol how did it get changed to @stewart
Just curious

IDK
lol

Weren't you there? Stewart has one eye.
Kevin was my mistake.

3 lmao Just call me Stuart... lol - apr 6 at 14:05 by cdunn
I think you told us to call you that and we changed it up a bit.

Well yes, but it started as Kevin, and then changed. I missed the how it changed.. Especialy since I do have two eyes, although I will check to be sure

I think it's two people that share the cdunn account.

5:10 PM
I remember that, but I can't remember how it got changed...
I actually prefered kevin.. lol

Someone else was here that pointed out that Kevin has two eyes, so your avatar doesn't look like that.

Oh yes! Well, my avi isn't a person lmao
And in actuality my avi is a Wankel which does have two rotors...
Mostly
I wonder if anyone ever made a 4 rotor Wankel

Technically neither is Kevin or Stuart.

@JPhi1618 picky picky lol

Is there a two-rotor Wankel?

5:15 PM
Most of them are. I don't know of any that isn't a two rotor system
They balance each other on the eccentric shaft

Oh ok.
I've only ever seen a picture/avatar that shows one.

Same way pistons do on the crank.

Makes sense...

Shows the motion and how it works.
Its an amazing process. The guy was a genius
Wankel that is

5:18 PM
12 rotors.. Damn...

The article eludes to a 4 rotor Mazda racing engine.

But the article does mention racing engines that typically have 4 rotors. So yes, they do get made.. I'm just not sure why they are not more popular for racing. I would think the compact size and high output would be features.. I will have to read up on why they are falling out of favor..

Maintenance cost and complexity?
So, does a typical Mazda rotary have two spark plugs?

Each rotor has two plugs, so a typical street car has 4..

@DucatiKiller, there's a commenter worried about "bent valves" from cold air when running with no exhaust.
Cold air is more dense, but damn...
I have also heard stories (albeit with regards to racing engine operating at high RPMs) of engines getting bent valves from drawing cold air into the exhaust header, so there may be a possibility of engine damage if you do so. But I imagine the noise will convice you pretty quickly that it's not a good idea! — TMN 46 mins ago

5:40 PM
I don't think it's a density thing, but a temperature thing. The cold air cooling the exhaust valves too quickly bending the stems..
Ihave no idea if it's true or not. Only thing I have ever run without an exhaust was a 2 rotor Wankel in my old RX-7. Never bent a valve in that :D

I just thought he confused "bent" with "burnt".
