12:00 AM
This is what I'm saying. I'm an HD idiot

s'ok, me too, and I'm factory trained...don't ask xD

I'm factory trained Honda from the 80's
What year is that ironhead motor?

Probably 1845
;-)
I wouldn't have a clue, lol!
I'm a car guy!

lol
pre civil war, they used to make them out of wood. It was called the woodhead.

haha the Ironhead is a 75
XLCH

Q: Valve Adjustment - 1975 Harley Davidson Ironhead

DucatiKillerOn Harley Davidson Ironhead motor (1975 XLCH), how do I adjust the valves? I seem to remember a mechanism in the bottom end but....I can't recall.

:)

haha nice one ok ok I will get to that shortly

12:47 AM
....Because it's Christmas time.....
Everyone should watch some Isle of Man at least once a year. It's good for you.
@JonathanMusso Nice answer!
@JonathanMusso Now reward yourself with some Isle of Man. :)

@DucatiKiller thanks. these bikes are sick
wow serious wobble on that
175 mph holy !@#$

1:09 AM
It's simply amazing

I want a crotch rocket now
lol
@DucatiKiller can you recommend a good Honda break system? it might be sacrilegious to put them on my Sportster but I am open to ideas

Do Honda's break?

oh you got me, no they don't! I meant brakes!

Haha, I was just playing. I see "breaks" getting used quite often. To be nice to people I usually edit it and make it the correct spelling before someone has fits, lol.

1:27 AM
:D

@DucatiKiller - I'm feeling sorry for the starter guy. I've been in that situation where it just gets so frustrating you cannot do anything but get pissed off.

Indeed. I've yelled at inanimate objects and cursed the sky with my fist...just failing....lol

It's about the only time you can really hear me cussing.

haha
I try to drown that out by making the music louder

Holy crap, the Isle of Man video is awesome

1:38 AM
indeed

Those guys have some big brass ones.

It makes my heartrate go up
large attachments as they say

But you have experience, which makes it even more real for you.

It's different doing club racing or trackdays....there aren't objects to hit. It's what makes road racing safer than football.
These guys hit mailboxes
and brick walls

I get it ... but I don't have any cycling experience to speak of.

1:40 AM
and houses, and gardens and other posts and various objects.....

and dirt and bumps and ...

gravel someone kicked out into the road.

just about everything

Ayup

1:41 AM
yes. it's just sheer insanity

A real "mans" sport.
Awesomeness

it's simply amazing

Looks lonely though
I guess they have radios in their helmets, eh?

"You live more in 5 minutes on a bike like this going flat out than some people live in their lifetime." ~ Burt Munro

Ayup

1:42 AM
There's a documentary on the race doctors, they position them around the track on motorcycles that roll out into the field of riders on the track with backpacks to goto a crash site.

Do they pit?
fuel?

yes
once a lap. about 36 miles I think

And man do they squirley
Hauling BUTTOCKS!

....and they look comfortable with it!!!

Do they have GPS following them and telling them what is coming up (someone in their ear), or do they have to memorize the course?

1:44 AM
memorization
not like rally cars

Gotcha

There's quite a few guys who have been doing it for almost 20 years

I;m sure they communicate with their pit though, wouldn't they?

not allowed to have radio in most of the series
even motogp

Crud ... really lonely then.

1:45 AM
In fact, I know of no motorcycle series that has radio comms
pitboard only. They are in the zone though.

That seems strange.
not being in the zone, but no comms.

it's like the F1 drivers that complain when they're pit is telling them what to do
Yes, I agree. I think for safety alone

In today's information age.
exactly
Anyway, great stuff.
Thanks for sharing!

There was a guy in world superbike two years ago pissing oil all over the track for half a lap and guys dropping like fly's behind him until they finally red flagged it.
had they had radio.....
YW

Exactly. I'm sure they stopped him about the time his engine siezed.
seized

Anyway, kind sir ... please have a great evening!

those forks and.....
@Paulster2 take care

cheers @Paulster2

:D

same to you

1:50 AM
Later @JonathanMusso :D

@JonathanMusso then you would use these calipers with those forks
Unless you are looking for a caliper for a bottom of the tube slider and you will do a conversion mount

hmm I would have to fab them up, got a springer frontend

well then....once second, I'll be back

ok, thank you sir

actually, why a honda caliper
Honda uses nissan in recent years
since the 80's
what are you trying to accomplish?

1:55 AM
basically brakes are up in the year. I can go with MY 2000+ from HD but I am just curious as to my other options. looking for good stopping power. it all has to be changed with the new wheels, as stock it was drum

what would you mount it to if it's a springer front end?

I would have to fab everything

The best calipers are the 4 piston opposed
The newer radial and block calipers would not work
but I don't see how you would be able to use the type for the link i sent or the fork slider mount, since you don't have a slider

mmm ok
typically guys don't even run a front brake with similar setups...but yeah...stopping power xD

OK, gotcha
I would frankly be terrified
I only use my front brake, I use the rear to settle the bike down a bit under extreme braking but that's it

2:12 AM
aye, front brakes amount for majority stopping power..I don't like rear drum brakes on that bike either

yeah, drums lockup early
for sure, not a fan

but this might all be speculation, I hope to find time to put back into this bike

woo we had a wheel lacing question

@BobCross & @Movemorecommentlinkstoptop ... anyway you two could throw your wiles down on the SE bosses that be? We need to promote this site. I believe we are about as good as we've ever been. Com'on! Put the whammy on them!

Q: Why do heavy vehicles almost always use diesel engines?

juhistI have always wondered why heavy vehicles such as large trucks and buses almost always use diesel engines, whereas in light cars there is a choice between diesel and gasoline engines. Engine efficiency might explain the preference towards diesel engines, but then again isn't this a valid conside...

Hot question, and good voting. Wish they all would come back for some need mechanical parlance.

@Paulster2 hola amigo!

good morning

1:40 PM
Hey @Zaid & @JonathanMusso - How are you two this morning (or afternoon, or wherever you are in the world, lol)?
I am going to make an inference here ... Interesting questions bring about interesting voting ...

@Paulster2 Great thanks! Just making some coffee. Probably going to head to the shop to work on the Sport Coupe for the day.

1:58 PM
@JonathanMusso - That sounds like fun ... just the "going to head to the shop" sounds like fun. I wish I had more than a garage here at the house to work out of. I think once the daughter is out of High School we'll take a look at our situation and see if something can be done about it.

2:13 PM
@Paulster2 Oh the temps dropped so we will shall see how fun it is. Gotta go get propane. How big is your garage? Not sure where you are located but if you have warm climate year round you could get a quonset hut rather reasonably.

@JonathanMusso - I don't have the space for a Quonset hut. I've only got about 1/4 acre of land. I'm in East-central Virginia (near Fredericksburg, south of DC by 45 miles).
My current garage is supposed to be a two car garage, but with all of my tools/spares/stuff, it's pretty much a single car garage.
Temps here have been pretty warm. Currently it's about 45 degF, so much cooler than it has been over the past week or so. With how the weather has been, I'm fully expecting Feb/Mar to be about -30 degF! Mother Nature has a way of completely trashing us when we least expect it.

2:28 PM
Ahh gotcha, well perhaps with creative storage you can get it organized. I know, all the tools and what not take up so much space!
It's -12 C today, just a few days ago it was +15 c

Exactly, lol!
@JonathanMusso - That's pretty chilly. Where abouts are you in Canada?

Just an hour north of Toronto

"North" of Toronto, lol ... yes, I'm sure it gets pretty cold there in the winter time.

It's usually -30 to -40 but this year has been different
hey man, when I was in northern Alberta it was -70 C !!!! lol

I can imagine ... and that's without the wind chill!
:-)

2:33 PM
haha yes

So are you in Quebec or Ontario?

Ontario
Montreal is in Quebec :D

The dividing line between the two is about 1 hour north of Toronto, lol.
I mean, directly north of Toronto, lol!

So you must be very close to the border ... no worries. I lived in Montana growing up, just south of British Columbia ... about due south of Calgary by about 75 miles (as the crow flies). I've been to Canada many times ... What a beautiful country.
Anyway, I wish you a grand day! Hope all is well up in the Great White North. :D

2:38 PM
A few hours to the border yes! That's awesome. Yeah Alberta was great. I want to relocate to BC I think
Thank you, you as well!

3:23 PM
@DucatiKiller, not sure if it's what you were going for, but your combo of picture and hat makes you look like Daft Punk...

lol
I always wanted to play hockey

Smoke from engine question answer: Take it back and make them actually fix the problem.

Agreed

3:45 PM
@Paulster2, looks like some diesel engines have a "throttle plate" for some type of EGR control, so maybe that's where this guy got confused?
You're right about the rant tho. Very long winded without much point.

3:58 PM
yeah, that guy seems almost angy

Disgruntled gasoline engineer.
Damn Diesels!!

lol
A diesel bus hit his dog when he was a kid. He had a PTSD event when he saw the question.

ha, nice.

7:06 PM
@DucatiKiller & @JPhi1618 - You guys slay me! ;-)

7:25 PM
@Paulster2 lol...wadya mean?

7:42 PM
So what is the mist that comes out of air conditioner vents that people call smoke?
I've seen air conditioner blow cold enough to create condensation and be able to see some mist or have the heater on when it's extremely cold and you roll down the wind and you see some mist off the vents....but....is it a compromised AC, leaking the fake freon...whattever you call it....into the system?
I've looked at some diagrams and don't really see how that would happen or even a broken heater core...

7:55 PM
I thought it was just condensation in the cooled air.

there are some posts that mention mist and smoke along with the smell of magic markers or a chemical smell
weird....

Q: Paint thinner/magic marker smell coming from AC

lewistgI recently purchased a 2012 Honda Civic (~36,000 miles). The AC will intermittently give off a paint thinner or magic marker smell. From what I understand, antifreeze has a sweet smell, and mold or mildew has a musty smell. It does not seem to be either of these smells; magic marker is probably t...

Q: Smokey A/C from 07 Toyota Camry XLE

user11427A while back my wife mentioned that smoke was coming from the front vents after a bit of driving with the A/C on. This does not happen regularly and the Freeon levels do not change. The other day, I witnessed this myself. There was no freeon odor - it didn't have an odor much at all. Then after a...

There's more too if you dig around and search with different terms
I think odin's dupehammer needs to be busted out if an answer can be found that's real and good that addresses these issues

@JonathanMusso Morning :)

@Zaid good morning! how are you today?

Feeling somewhat accomplished

Q: How do lambda sensors work?

ZaidVirtually every modern passenger vehicle today utilizes lambda sensors. How critical are they to a vehicle's operation? How do they work?

Finally rolled out this one into the wild

@Zaid Yeah, very nice work. I like it.
Howdy @JonathanMusso How's the weather up there. It's freezing the desert southwest. It's like 60 some degrees F. burrrrrr

@DucatiKiller Turns out that there are quite a few lambdas out there. Didn't want to leave any of them out

10:24 PM
yeah, you had to do some work

@Zaid What an answer, excellent work you have done there!
@DucatiKiller It's bone chilling today, first bout of cold we have had. -12 c atm. Just the other day it was +15c haha.

I"m writing one up for this. Horrible answers....I'm compelled to fix it.

Q: Symptoms of Lean or Rich carb settings on a motorcycle

user460I have a 1981 Yamaha XS650. I recently put in K&N stock replacement filter (ie, they are in the airbox and conform to the size of the original), however they may be leading to a leaner mixture because they purportedly let through more air. I want to tune my carbs (yes, I know that the B34s are n...

@JonathanMusso that's obscene. There should be a law against cold weather.

@DucatiKiller it doesn't look like much but I dug this out today....gonna get the frame prepped for paint and the tank...

NICE!
go get em
nothing like making progress on a project!
looks like you have some good space in that shop too.

Guys, I'm curious about something

10:29 PM
Thanks, it's time to get this on its way. Gonna paint the frame tomorrow and get the motor installed. Tank and rear fender will be plum crazy purple I think
yessir?

Whenever I see bike builds I see it takes an absolute age to get them done and the amount of attention to detail is almost Leonardo da Vinci
Is it that complicated?

I think cars are more complicated. I've done a couple of body off restores and it just seems to go on forever. prepping for pain alone on a car. OMG....so much time

I mean when I compare the mechanics of a motorcycle to a car it looks much, much simpler right?

yes
absolutely

I'd have thought it possible to restore bikes in like a couple of days

10:32 PM
I think there are few things with older four cylinder bikes that are more complex, like getting them tuned....carburated of course

But from what I see on the interwebz it looks like it takes an age

welllll.....I have some that I've been working on for over a year

well it depends

yes...depends

if you work full time, it takes time no matter what you do, car or bike

10:32 PM
Yes, I can understand carb tuning is a bit of a black art

if you can dedicate 10 hours a day to a restoration, it better get done quickly :D right?

but when you are putting a new wheel on a bike, you frequently need machine work
there are lots of things I'm going to swap out/change where I need to get machine work done
happens to me all the time
PITA

btw I love the café racer scene

I never seem to have to do that with a car
ever
yes, love cafe bikes. I've never done one though

there are some gorgeous creations out there
I was smitten by a couple of Moto Guzzi restorations

10:35 PM
I gained appreciation for them after digging up the old cb

I helped a buddy do a ducati monster last year. lot of fun. lotta fabbing.

yeah....that's beautiful. I love Guzzi's

ahh that is sick
love the seat

10:38 PM
that square gastank is pretty badass too

Just something about the longitudinal V-twins

nice seat work, going up the butt of the tank

And the gas tank is original Guzzi

that looks painful to make

They didn't mod it (the fuel tank)

10:40 PM
nice
makes things easier for sure
looks great...the whole package.....thoughtful
I don't like ostentatious stuff. This scratches my inner build itch...

That's what makes café builds so appealing
Their spartan appeal (at least that's how they should be)

I don't like the OCC style bikes much, I appreciate the work but yeah...not my first choice. BRB in a few

Agreed on both your statements
I like simplified
stripped down. Motor wheels engine Gooooooo!

There was another one that was superbly executed. It was a Yamaha

Nice, looks like an SRX single. My buddy raced one

10:46 PM
It's an SR500

those are cool too
very similar
I love big single cylinders

The level of detail on this one is stunning

but I don't own one

Check out the built-in LED taillight
The digital gauge
The heat wrap on the exhaust

To know you is to love you @zaid
it's a nice build for sure

10:50 PM
Right, I have to go now
Else I'll suffer from lack of sleep tomorrow
Nice talking to you guys, have a great day!

take care zaid
thanks for the pics!
made me smile.....AND that post is badass. Next Level as they say.

11:43 PM
I love that white one
