Q: Symptoms of Lean or Rich carb settings on a motorcycle

user460I have a 1981 Yamaha XS650. I recently put in K&N stock replacement filter (ie, they are in the airbox and conform to the size of the original), however they may be leading to a leaner mixture because they purportedly let through more air. I want to tune my carbs (yes, I know that the B34s are n...

@DucatiKiller - Nice answer, btw.

great answer, extremely detailed

I started writing it and went...whoah....this answer is going to be huge....
lol
I was thinking to just ask the question and put in that answer but the dupe hammer would smash down on me I think
@Paulster2 Who reviews flagged posts?
I've never seen one, I don't think

@DucatiKiller - The flags are handled by moderators, I believe. Have you never flagged a post?

@DucatiKiller - Scatter Cams ... great question! I've just grown a whole new education! Too bad the wife is headed to bed or I'd write a comprehensive answer to your question. If it still remains tomorrow, I'll write something out. I don't like the link which Daniel Griscom gave you. I found another one which explains most everything about the scatter cam. Great stuff.

good morning

2:11 PM
Hey :D

3:09 PM
@DucatiKiller - I answered your "scatter cam" question ... what a great question! I love learning things then trying to describe them. Hopefully my answer does justice to your question :D

A: Scatter Camshafts - What are they and why do I want one?

Paulster2To understand the question at large, it is first good to know what the application is and how it came about. The engine in question is the older type of 4-cylinder engine used in Series-A Minis (not the modern BMW manufactured one, but the one produced by the British Motor Corporation). This Min...

A: Why do heavy vehicles almost always use diesel engines?

Jim StanleyNo worries Paul. I think my response has caused a little jealously. Technically it's fine though. That said, I'm happy to hear - with proof - how it's wrong. I like diesel engines, but their efficiency benefits when compared to typical gasoline engines are not what they used to be; for the r...

I feel like I'm watching some sort of surrealist performance art without the background to understand what's going on.

Uh, yah, I hadn't seen that either.
@BobCross - Great balls of fire, lol. It also appears its a second account by the same person.
@BobCross - I guess he though I was being jealous of his answer?

3:25 PM
Maybe he's just angry that the Expanded Universe isn't in the new Star Wars movie and this is his way of acting out his feelings.... ;-)

I was a little angry about that as well ...
So I guess I can see that </sarcasm>

3:59 PM
Nerd rage. Always something.... ;-)

morning gents
@Paulster2 Your 'friend' wants to play in diesel.

He's stuck on there being a form of throttle plate on some diesels.

He's trapped in a world of haters!
@Paulster2 the scatter cam.....beauty answer...TY.
The world of mini coopers. You can find some nerd rage in there too.

4:15 PM
Seems like trolling the mini world would be too easy... You just go in talking about how the new ones are so much better, right?
2

lol.....that's hilarious.

4:40 PM
We need to do whatever we can to keep the QPD at or above where it's at. You all have been doing an excellent job. I'll see what I can do to come up with more questions as well. There's a gold badge at the end of that rainbow!!
I have 15/100 well received questions ... Woot! Now, to just come up with 85 more :D

Indeed
@Paulster2 Your diesel friend answers, I want to mash them into a single answer....
I'm afraid he'll chase me down and tackle me in the street and start screaming "There are throttle plates!"
because....he has passion

Come on @DucatiKiller... "Avoid comments like "+1" or "thanks!""
You're not adding anything of value. :)
You should just post another answer flaming any small grammatical/factual errors you find.

4:57 PM
@JPhi1618 OMG....lmao
@JPhi1618 I know, it feels all awkward and uncomfortable being nice to people.

5:07 PM
@Paulster2 I made a sandbox for you and your diesel friend to duke it out :D

Q: Why don't all diesel engines have throttle plates?

DucatiKillerI learned recently that many older and some newer diesels don't have throttle plates to control airflow. I was also quite shocked to learn about a condition called diesel engine runaway. Apparently a diesel engine can run out of control from diesel and oil pooling in the manifold. It seems tha...

@DucatiKiller +1 thanks for a great question! ;-)

TY, I"m hoping this dystopian multi-response thread syndrome in the other question can get migrated....

5:27 PM
@BobCross Im incorporating 'nerd rage' into my nomenclature of living.

I have to repost this here: I guess I'm still iffy on the runaway thing and throttle plates. This is an emotional issue for me now :-| – DucatiKiller
2

@Paulster2 It's my nerd rage creeping in....lol

@DucatiKiller - You are the man, lol! (Hopefully you're a man ... now that I've said that, lol!)

@DucatiKiller You saw the other answer on your runaway question, right?
6
A: Diesel Engine Runaway - What is it?

Fred WilsonSince the diesel has no physical throttle, power is controlled by limiting fuel. Air is always available so any unintended, un-metered fuel will cause the engine to increase rpm and power output. The most common sources are blowby oil and oil leaking from a worn turbocharger, these then pool in t...

I've seen oil from a worn turbo come up a lot in posts about this.

@Paulster2 I just leave the answer open. To have an air of mystery about me.
@JPhi1618 Yes I did. Not sure if I should say something nice though. :)
I can't upvote, I ran out last night and have a few hours left before my allotment returns

5:41 PM
@Paulster2 Early DEF implementations were so bad...
My mother in law has one of the first Mercedes Diesel SUV's with it.
There's NO GAUGE to tell you how much is left, and if you let it go to far, a light comes on that the dealer must reset.

I added the bit of "I don't know what it is" because the stupid thing didn't let me post such a short question. Of course I know what it is ... I just wanted to throw more fodder on the fire of QPD.

You have to removed the spare tire cover to add more, and unless you have the $$$ mercedes special bottle of it, it's super easy to spill all over the place.

@Paulster2 Yup, I'd like to see the APQ number get above 1.8.

I see a lot of vehichles now with a filler hole next to the fuel filler. That's the right way.

@DucatiKiller - As I stated before, that's going to be really difficult, unless we get more questions which are more controversial (read: have more opinion involved). Usually, there is a "right answer" for everything. Once it's posted, there's no need to post another something which is exactly the same.
I agree I'd like to see that grow as well. I don't believe it's one of the "major" stats involved with site progression, though.

5:45 PM
@Paulster2 Indeed, it really is like that. Although on sites like server fault and network engineering......their APQ spin out of control quite a bit.

@Paulster2, I could have posted a comment on Duc's throttle plate question, but answer seemed more appropriate.

@Paulster2 and their tech questions. It's an odd thing.

If more "info" is posted as answers even tho is not "the right answer" that will help.

@JPhi1618 Agree w/ you on that. More contributions=better in my mind
It's diesel day on MSE

Q: What is DEF and how is it used?

Paulster2I keep hearing about DEF ... what is it and why is it used in conjunction with diesel engines? I know it is a more recent thing (last decade), but don't know much about it.

I'll take a line from the Perl book: There's more than one way to do it

5:47 PM
@Paulster2 tru dat

Which really applies to the programming world, but not usually to fixing an automobile.

yes, I think when we try and get into the mind of a mechanical engineer and debate why they did something a particular way, something along that order, that's when it spins out of control. I think the nerd rage our diesel friend is showing is over the top but in a sense it's good for the site. Passion.

@Paulster2, you're a programmer, right? Or at least an engineer that programs...

I have done some scripting in the past and have dabbled with programming ...
I understand programming for the most part. And I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night ...

Oh, ok. I was going to ask if the Code Golf on SE bother you as much as it did me, but you might not have a strong opinion.
I loath that site.

5:53 PM
@DucatiKiller - I never have a problem with someone contradicting me on something. I like to be corrected (well, not really) so that I can learn. It furthers the consciousness as they'd say in the 60's.
@JPhi1618 - I don't spend much time there. I would bet it would be mildly entertaining, though.
I definitely wouldn't be participating.

It's people using languages that are basically just made up for the purpose of being confusing or doing tricky stuff for code golf.
There's basically no relationship to actual coding at all.

Yah, I get that.
I think it would aggravate me after a while as well.
On SE, I like to stick to things I know, for the most part. I started over on Movies, but they have gotten to a point where their noses stick up in the air too much.

@Paulster2 Yes, agreed. As far as I'm concerned, the more brutal the learning lesson....for me....the more it sticks.

A: Why do heavy vehicles almost always use diesel engines?

vini_iTorque is the name of the game. High torque is needed to move heavy loads. If comparing a gasoline engine to a comparable diesel engine the diesel will always have higher torque. The higher torque comes from the need for a higher compressing ratio needed for compression ignition. To achieve the h...

Guys, as much as I hate to say it, this answer makes no sense

@Zaid we're hours into this one buddy.
@Zaid oh and. Hi Zaid.

5:58 PM
Hey there @DucatiKiller
and @all

hit rewind and look back. It's been an interesting morning. Glad I'm on vacation

I just skimmed through
You guys are talking about throttle plates
I'm talking about torque
Torque isn't the answer
Don't forget that just as a diesel engine can be geared up, a gasoline engine can be geared down to increase torque. I like the explanation about the engine internals but it doesn't really explain the entire system design. — altendky yesterday
This gentleperson was spot on
The inherent difference between diesels and gas engines is the thermodynamic cycle (Diesel cycle vs Otto cycle)
Because of that difference, the diesel cycle is more efficient

Are most diesels two or 4 stroke? They have both out there, right?

More efficiency = less fuel = huge savings for industries that use heavy trucks

there was one guy, somewhere in the ocean of text, that said something like, "diesels are going away in the next 25 years."
he was very confident...lol
my question would be, what do the refinery's do with all the diesel then?
That is a huge global petro market. It's a percentage of the oil refined, quite simply

6:05 PM
Lol, that's amusing

It just seemed very naive

Reminds me... I need to activate my Volkswagen $1000 pay off for my TDI.

lease?

No, the $1000 "Good will package for affected owners".

@JPhi1618 you and Zaide are VW brothers
OH!

6:08 PM
They gave $500 visa gift card and $500 dealer/service cash.

what continent are you on?

Texas ;)

lol
that made me want to curse
in a good way

Where are you?

My buddy is Texas and he is all TEXAS.
Arizona

6:09 PM
We get Open Carry starting on Friday.

Saying Texas is a continent is so Texas :)
Heard about that

@JPhi1618 wasn't that always the case?

Yea, not sure how it will work because most businesses will ban it.
@Zaid, no, we've had concealed carry for hand guns, but not open carry for the general public.
You could legally open carry a "long gun", but only activists would ever do that.

We have open carry here, for years.

I now have a mental image of you doing business in a "new" way from Friday

6:13 PM
When I was a kid and we moved here in 1978 my dad and I went into a bank and there was guy at the teller with a holstered gun. First time I saw a gun in public like it. I remember feeling fearful.

My neighbors have like 20+ guns each... I've yet to join the club.
They've got my back for now, lol.

Does anyone know if Chuck Norris is pro-carry?

hmmmm....I don't know

I'm pretty sure he just hands them out to people if he sees you without one.

lmao
Most guys I know have guns but they aren't fervent about it. Lots of ex-military.

I was thinking of asking this
Applications for Crossplane Crankshaft and Flatplane Crankshaft

@DucatiKiller Fire away

And then.........what is a crossplane crankshaft
or before....whattever
I'm going to put my carbon fiber exhaust on my tuono first
merry christmas to me

6:43 PM
Cool video on Yamaha's crossplane crank They used it in MotoGP and then put on their premier sporbike in 2009
it's pretty markety but there's cool stuff in it

6:56 PM
@DucatiKiller - How does a cross-plane crank help with a motorcycle engine? It surely doesn't help it rev up like a flat-plane crank would. As of right now, I'm not impressed with it as they show it on a 4-cyl engine.

look at some of the v8 stuff
I the corvette uses a crossplane
it allows for smoother intake flow as well

Almost all American V8's use a crossplane crank
New Mustang is about the only one which uses a flatplane crank, which I'm really impressed with.

there you have it. bigger than 4 cylinder gets difficult with chassis
and weight distro
although honda used a v-5 two stroke for years in racing

I'll look at it and see what's going on with it in the YZF.
I'll be back.
:D

riders pov in this
tire life
better composite torque

7:23 PM
Do glow plugs "turn off" once the diesel engine is running?

7:35 PM
I don't know. I was under the impression they do but all my beliefs about diesel engines and been challenged over the last 3 days

8:22 PM
@DucatiKiller, I'm going to have to look into that valve design now. How is it held tightly closed without a lot of friction on the closing lobe? (rhetorical question... kind of...)

Is the piece on the right a little springy to maintain constant contact on the lift and close lobes?

they had radial springs on older air cooled but in this case no.

8:46 PM
Well, I guess regular cams have a tight tolerance. Once the valve spring bottoms out, the valve stem stays almost in contact with the lobe.

@DucatiKiller I can think of a few benefits
The trouble is I don't know if they are real benefits

@Zaid - there's a bunch of ducati frenzy/controversy about it

was I wrong for writing what I did in the comment? Specifically the post where I told him not to be a child? I wasn't trying to be rude, but he continuously disrupted the flow of the forum... I could see other people were rather annoyed as well. The only reason I ask is because my comment was deleted =( I don't want to cause any animosity on here

But it is sheer genius from an engineering standpoint. Eliminate springs altogether

@Zaid it really is. Painful to work on at first but after a few times it's fine.
@cloudnyn3 I flagged it but it's fine. I wanted the guy to keep going but try and settle him down.
It's fine, you were right
No worries

8:51 PM
This on the Diesel question?

@JPhi1618 yes
"use both hands"
still laughing

ha, glad to bring a smile.

bob called what the guy was doing "nerd rage"
I'm going to use it in my regular life, I experience a lot of nerd rage in my daily.
@cloudnyn3 for real, don't worry about. We've been laughing about the weird interactions all morning.

Lol
Okay, I didn't want to upset anyone on here. I'm pretty good about knowing when I'm wrong and don't like it when people treat it's a way to demean other people. I also fact checked alot of that stuff and it's sources were "so so" =/ I like this forum and want to keep it friendly =P
sorry I'm on my phone as a way

@cloudnyn3 Indeed. It's also good to have some passion flying around too. If I asked a harley question about why they use 1930's technology there a good chance a passionate harley guy would fling some of his harley nerd rage at me.
this guy is clearly a diesel junky. I kinda hope he figures out how the site works and contributes some more of his nerd rage.
There...this will be like the fourth time I get to use ....nerd rage

8:59 PM
Hahaha agreed. Yeah I try to be as humble as possible. This place's purpose is to create a wealth of knowledge after all =)

@cloudnyn3 Humble is good, it's the only way I can manage to learn. What I love about this place too.

@Paulster2 it's Chevy vs Mopar, drop what you're doing and watch!

@Zaid The Mopar must win if your posting this. Just guessing.....
@cloudnyn3 here's some passion for you. Paulster2 and chevy. hhhhhhold on
lol

9:03 PM
Hahahaha
I must say, I love my Doge Magnum and Ram =P
I love my Malibu just as much though!

@DucatiKiller I'd post it regardless who wins
(though I am more Chevy than Mopar by virtue of ownership)

@Zaid There you have it then. Ithought surely you are Mopar due to the post...to have some fun with him. I don't have a stake a ground on this one but if you get into ducati/aprilia debate with me it's on.

Lol, you're the one posting questions about Desmo valve trains
I find the way they set up the tests rather interesting

no valve spring, no valve spring cavitation

A stroked SBC vs. a big block Mopar, inherently different bore /stroke configs

9:09 PM
It's always Chevy vs Mopar because they don't want to get embarrassed by Motorcraft?
3
<ducks>

He just said that!
<awkward silence>

@JPhi1618 is on a roll today!

He is indeed

Hahaha Mazda and Ford seem to share A LOT....
I have an F150 and owned a Miata... I liked them both a lot. =P

I like it when engine design philosophies are different

9:12 PM
miata = trackday
@Zaid yes me too. I've been thinking about your w12, does it share any exhaust ports?
I was going to look it up

Yeah I had mine set up for racing. Everyone makes fun of them, but they are the most fun thing to take around a track!

engine on a skateboard. Love those things!

Don't think so. That Siamese setup benefits pipsqueak engines more

Precisely haha

@Zaid The scatter cam?

9:15 PM
I'd own a Lotus Elise if I could afford it haha

@DucatiKiller yes, that is related

I dated a girl with one about 10 years ago. Drove it from phoenix to prescott. nice windy roads. twas amazing.
@Zaid well, if were talking efficiency is exhaust gas removal then it would benefit the w12 too, right?

You're lucky. I've never had the chance to drive one. The closest thing I think I've driven was a supercharged Toyota MR2 MK1. It had loads of power and it pleasurably terrifying =P
It was*

189 hp stock and 1800 lbs

@DucatiKiller the bottom end is good for 600 hp and they shipped the W12 out of the factory with a detuned 450. I don't think they need moar power :)

9:18 PM
unreal.
@Zaid That's ridiculous. Everyone always needs moar.
@Zaid She had the federal. It has a yamaha designed head on it.

Hold on. Wasn't it you who said that more was an illusion of more?
:D
@DucatiKiller I think you have an answer that nails it
1
A: Why did Ducati decide to use the desmodromic valve train rather than a more tradition valve train?

draksiaThe goal was to prevent valve float at higher rpms. Given the metallurgy of the day it required a lot of spring pressure to ensure that the spring was push the valve closed. The desmo unit mechanically forces the valve closed as opposed to using spring pressure. This would allow an engine to ru...

That's definitely one
There are 16000 RPM under the bucket shim valvetrains though
Why should they stick with this design?

Yes, the best part was that it was modified with smaller circumference pulleys so it pumped out more boost. I don't know the exact output, but the guy that was at the track said it was around 250HP. It felt like a million =P
The larger supercharger did it some justice too >=)

@zaid It's almost like nostalgia keeps them using it at this point.
@cloudnyn3 I love that car because of the RWD

Do I sense some Aprilia-philia ? ;)

9:25 PM
it must have been insane
@Zaid lol....maybe

@cloudnyn3 welcome to The Pitstop btw
I haven't seen you around before

@Zaid I think there's something similar with harley engines? Why use them. Pushrods, really low RPM, hardly makes power...why use it? Nostalgia...that's why.
@JonathanMusso Hey, when did you get here?

I post around randomly if I feel like I can answer something on the other part. I've never been on here though lol.
I actually have to go. The wife wants dinner and I have to shopping. Good talking to everyone =)

@DucatiKiller how do you rate the Panigale?

take care @cloudnyn3 See you around

9:32 PM
On topic* sorry my phone >_< have a good night guys!!

@Zaid Very powerful, very rigid frame, difficult to control, next level electronics, beautifully made, temporary
@Zaid Aprilia has more ergo electronics though :D

What makes it temporary?

The chassis design, it will be depricated and replaced. It doesn't work as well as they had hoped.
The power unit will stay though
The 'frame' is basically doing double duty. It's the airbox above the vtwin and extends forward to incorporate the steering head. That's it. It bolts onto the top of the engine and is an aluminum alloy. The swingarm bolts to the back of the engine. The engine is a stressed member of the chassis. There is no flex. The traction control kicks in early ad often as a result because the chassis absorbs nothing. The perimeter aluminum that the rest of the world uses can have flex built into it.
It makes for tough transition of power from braking into the apex, which is does very well, to power on just after the apex. The weight shift and rigidity make thing get all squirly when you hammer down on exit. If your a smoother rider it could suite you but in Ducati's motogp design they of the same, it was carbon fiber not aluminum, they ditched it and went to perimeter. No one could ride it. It almost destroyed Valentino Rossi's career, if your've ever hear of him.
Here's the gand prix/motogp bike
notice the airbox? Nope...it's a frame...no, it's an airbox....hold on...it's both.

9:53 PM
here's the stock bike. S version.

I see it
Have you seen this question before?
3
Q: Why do most mass-production motorcycles have their intakes facing backwards?

ZaidAlmost every motorcycle I have seen has its air intake mounted such that it is sucking in air from the direction opposing travel. According to fluid dynamics, if the intake is made to face forwards, the engine would benefit from ram-air effect, which can result in higher engine power output. No...

@DucatiKiller

@Zaid no, I have not

It may benefit from your perusal

@Zaid Good question

Although I expect the answer is already valid

10:00 PM
mmmm....I take umbrage with it. :D I think that most, do not
smaller one like mopeds and what not, low cc singles...it seems to be random placement

@Zaid - I hadn't watched Episode 2, so that's what I'm doing right now.

larger displacement, most are forward or have an intake mechanism that is facing forward
@Paulster2 You'll like it I think
@Paulster2 I like your DOT5 answer

TY
@Zaid - Just fired up Ep.3

Hey @J.Musser welcome
@Zaid Constant Velocity carburetors already accommodate higher intake pressues because their slide is operated by atmospheric pressure. The butterfly is opened by the rider/operator

10:29 PM
@DucatiKiller Hey what's up

@J.Musser - How have you been :D

@J.Musser Saw that dodge question, it got a ton views but hardly any votes :(

@DucatiKiller I don't need votes :)

You are the vote!

10:37 PM
@Paulster2 Hey I've been ok hbu?

Your a noble man
:)

I'm good. Son got moved down to NC, so We've been going down there quite a bit.
He was in Alaska.

Alaska! Go @Paulster2 's son!

He's in the Army, so was at Anchorage.
Now he's at Ft. Bragg (Fayetteville)

well done

10:54 PM
@JPhi1618 - It was Chevy v Mopar because Ford cannot seem to build anything bigger than 302ci.

11:07 PM
This should be fun :-)

11:18 PM
Is that linoleum flooring? I'm sure the wife is going to be pissed when she gets home!!!

That's excellent

Make for one heck of a sewing machine!

Pretty creative

You wanna see how valves spin at speed ... there you go.
How about some valve float! Awesome video :D
It shows the whole valve is flexing during float.
I imaging the valve guide is completely toast.

11:36 PM
cavitation'
that's a good vid
That's why pushrods are a bit of a bummer

Here's a "new" technology for you, lol.

They sound like nasa ground personal in the audio

Yes, very dry and matter of fact.

pretty fancy stuff there
I like piece of the video where they are showing the valve bounce

Yup!

11:45 PM
Those S1000RR have 205HP out of one liter. Measure at the crank. It's unreal

That's a lot of hp/l, lol!
Not what you think it is ...
No slutty females ... darn.
Best one is at 2:24, then the dyno run just after it. I'd hate to have to clean up that dyno cell.

the hill climb fire is pretty fun though

Yah, pretty awesome ... on sand even.

good evening
